Don’t you just love cozy mysteries? They always have quirky, loveable characters, and fun cover art.
I have a fun review for you and two, yes, two giveaways!
Trudy, Madly, Deeply (Working Stiffs Mystery Series)
Publisher: Corvallis Press (July 27, 2013)
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Number of Pages: 260 (ebook)
This book is due to come out in print to coincide with this tour.
Synopsis
After human lie detector Charmaine Digby scores a job as the County Coroner’s new investigative assistant, the unthinkable happens—a doctor reports the suspicious death of Trudy, a family friend and one of several elderly patients at the hospital whose heart mysteriously stopped.
With no physical evidence of foul play, Char’s on the case, much to the irritation of Detective Steve Sixkiller, who doesn’t want her to stick her pretty nose for trouble in his investigation. But she’s a woman on a mission to uncover the truth, and she’d better keep her eyes open or the next body on the way to the morgue could be hers.
My Review
This book will make you laugh, a lot.
Char is quite a character. She’s carrying a few extra pounds and leaps before she looks. This made her very real for me. We all wish we could be like the women on those fashion magazines, but in reality, most of us don’t. And when we hit the mid twenties and up, us women tend to carry a few extra pounds.
I’m like Char, and really don’t worry about it. She tries to diet, but filling in at the local restaurant and helping bake all those yummy muffins doesn’t help there.
The most important part of any story or movie is the characters. I like plenty of them and got that with this book.
From the senior center and Tango Tuesday, to the local gym, to the local restaurant, Duke’s Cafe, where you can catch the latest gossip, there are so many characters to fall in love with.
My favorites, besides Char and her sexy best friend Detective Steve Sixkiller, are Char’s gram and the raucous elderly waitress, Lucille, at Duke’s Cafe.
These two ladies take no sass, steal the show when they enter a scene, and remind me so much of people I know and love. You can relate to all of the characters and may even recognize a few from your own neighborhood!
Char’s leap first, look later, way of investigating gets her in pickle after pickle in her new job at the prosecutor’s office , and Steve has his hands full keeping an eye on her and keeping her out of trouble. She may be a human lie detector, but her ability to tell if someone is lying or not could also make her a target.
And there’s Char’s mom, Marietta, the actress and diva of drama. She becomes Char’s back up. There’s a scene in the book with a taser that I could see clearly and had me laughing out loud.
I didn’t forget about Trudy. You know, Trudy from the title of this book? Well, she doesn’t have a big part in this story because she’s already dead when it starts. Her death is just the beginning as it may not be from natural causes. Char is personally connected, as Trudy is her great-aunt Alice’s close friend, and she plays nosy parker to find out the truth.
Suspicious death, maybe murder, a rumor of romance, tango anyone. All fun ingredients for this cozy mystery.
Something really great about this story. It doesn’t end here as this is the kick off book for The Working Stiffs Mysteries series. More fun, quirky characters to fall in love with.
I have a soft spot for cozy mysteries and Trudy, Madly, Deeply stole my heart.
5 Stars
~~~
A couple of scenes I liked:
“You’re blushing.”
“I know.”
“It’s cute.”
“Yeah, well, I’m a cute girl.”
and
“I’ll bring dessert.”
“Chow mein, you’ll be the dessert.”
I am definitely NOT an amateur sleuth! Couldn’t find my head if it wasn’t attached…
I have the curiosity but not the know how!
LOL, Tiffany! For those of us who aren’t natural-borne slueths, maybe that’s why we like reading about them. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
Thank you for hosting “Trudy” and me today on our Great Escapes tour. And what a fabulous review! I’m thrilled! 🙂
The pleasure is all mine! I laughed so much my jaw hurt. Thank you for all of the laughs:)
If you could only see me smiling from reading this wonderful review and all the awesome feedback. Thank you!!! 😀
No, but I wish I was ! kathambre@yahoo.com
Kathy, I’m with you. I wish I was, too. Alas, I think I channelled all my sleuthing ability into Char. 🙂
I’m not pushy enough.
My sleuthing is limited to guessing while reading a mystery and finding the hidden object after hubby has searched.
My sleuthing is pretty much limited, too, but I do like a good mystery–how I got into this writing gig! 🙂 Thanks for dropping by, Barbara!
I like doing that too! My sister and I both watch movies and read a book and make bets on what happened or who did it.
Oh, good question! I love it. We did do some amateur sleuthing once. We had issues with someone pulling up our newly planted trees (very small ones) in our front yard. Now, I am not certain one incident makes an amateur sleuth, but we did catch the person!!!
Please enter me. I love the cover of this book!
Ooooh, Maria! You had a real mystery on your hands. Good sleuthing! 🙂
Thanks for the nice feedback about the book cover. I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!
It’s a great cover. And really husband did most of the hard work. The funny thing is that we both had suspects and we were wrong! Well, it could be that more than one person was guilty too, but the person we caught wasn’t the one we thought would be guilty!
What a stinker. I hope the authorities(parents) take care of that.
I had a mystery once. In the wee hours of the morn a car would pull up, hesitate, then back out of our driveaway. Happened several nights and I was finally able to catch them. It was the newspaper delivery person! I had just signed up for a subscription. I felt so foolish but couldn’t see what was occuring in the dark!
Hey, you solved your mystery too! Yes, the parent did take care of the situation. Not only did we receive an apology, the culprit “Volunteered” to help with lawn work. :>)
I’m am a snooper/sleuth no doubt about that. I will not quit till I find out the truth.
Heather, you have that in common with Char. You’re both determined to get to truth of the matter. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
No secrets will go unrevealed!
I am not an amateur sleuth by any stretch of the imagination! But, I love reading about them and this book sounds so cute and funny! Love the cover and title too!
I had so much fun reading this Taylor. I felt at home!
Everytime I hear the words, cozy mystery, I have to have it!
Thanks for the nice feedback about TMD, Taylor! As a debut author I couldn’t be happier about how well “Trudy” is being received.
As far as sleuthing goes, maybe you can do some vicarious sleuthing through Char. 😉
As a kid I tried to do things like put items back exactly where they had been so no one would know I was investigating.
One Christmas, when I was really young, all of us kids unwrapped our presents, then wrapped them back up to wait for Christmas morning. Our parents never knew!
Sneaky! Maybe one of my future murderers in the series did this as a child. LOL!
Elizabeth, it sounds like your inner “Nancy Drew” revealed herself very early. I like that in a good sleuth! 🙂
Thanks for stopping by today!
No amateur sleuth here. I like to think I would be observant enough to see when there are things to be solved but I am pretty sure I would just miss any clues totally! But it sure is fun reading about amateur sleuths!
ElaineE246(at)msn(dot)com
Yeah, I’m no Sherlock Holmes either!
I’m with you, Elaine. While I wish I shared Char’s deception detection ability, I think I’d be blind to most clues. I sure do like reading and writing about them though!
Thanks so much for dropping by today. 🙂
i love books that make me smile and laugh – i could be a good sleuth if i my family needed me!
We have the same taste in books, Lynn. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by!
You’ll smile and laugh a lot with this one. Just so much fun!
No, I’m not an amateur sleuth. I’m the one that always hangs back and will find out later from someone that’s up front. Thank you for the giveaway. Would love to enter the Rafflecopter also, but my Kindle Fire doesn’t work for the Rafflecopter.
I’m not much of an amateur sleuth either, Barbara. I think I must channel all my would-be sleuthyness through Char. 🙂
Thanks for weighing in on this fun topic!
Hi Barbara. Sorry about the rafflecopter. I’m going to check into that for when I get one.
I might not be a good sleuth but I do follow up.
Awesome review Laura. This sounds like a rollicking good read. Thanks Wendy and Laura for the great giveaway.
Thanks for the nice comment, Sherry. And I agree — I’m super-happy with the awesome review. Thanks again to Laura for the review and for hosting me and “Trudy” yesterday!! 🙂
My goodness! It sure is busy over here. Looks like we all love a cozy mystery. I hope your book does well Wendy and I’ll be first in line for the next one:)
You’ll be laughing your patootie off Sherry!
Thanks again for your hospitality, wonderful review, and kind support, Laura! 🙂
I’m definitely NOT a sleuth–too much of a chicken and afraid I might get into dangerous situations.
I hear ya! And I’m not pushy enough either.
It really depends on what day you ask me. On Saturdays and Sundays, I am having a wonderful year. On Monday’s not so much- unless I’m off work. 🙂
Ugh- sorry, misread that. I am considered a “sleuth” at work. I investigate incidents involving residents (I work in a nursing home).
That must be interesting and a bit scary.
I second that!
This looks hilarious!
It is! I laughed so much!
Not a sleuth either, but I do love reading about them and this sounds such fun!
Would love to win that ebook copy – debbylush@tiscali.co.uk
Neither am I and like you I love reading about them though.
Hmmm, does being an amateur sleuth mean finding whatever my husband drops, misplaces, etc? Or does that make me a professional sleuth…who knows! 🙂 Wonderful review! Another MUST read for me!
…yeah, I can find things, I just can’t follow directions…..babyblue7299@yahoo.com
Yep. You’re a professional!
I would love to consider myself an amateur sleuth, but frankly would more likely make a great character that bumbles around and solves the crime by accident LOL Thank you for the fun. This looks like an awesome read, congratulations on the new release.
dz59001[at]gmail[dot]com
That would be me too!
I’m not a sleuth, but I can red about them.
carissavieira@gmail.com
It would probably be safer! LOL
I am not sleuth…I am more of a damsel in distress waiting for a knight in shining armor.
Lets just hope the knight shows up!
