I hope ya’ll had a marvelous Thanksgiving.

So now it’s the countdown to Christmas. Are you ready? Are you the type to get your shopping done early or are you the type who likes to wait til the last minute? Do you make a list and know what you are looking for or do you just get out there and browse the aisles?

I have a fun question for you and would love for you to participate. What is the most memorable present you received when you were a young child? The one you still feel that amazing awe about?

I’ll share mine. There were six of us kids and to keep us from knowing who the presents were for, my parents would choose a theme, putting characters names on the presents and keeping it secret until Christmas morning. Each year was different. Sometimes it would be cartoon characters names for each of us. Sometimes it would be Santa’s reindeer. You never knew which name on the gift was yours until they revealed the list. It made it so fun and really ramped up the excitement.

One year I accidentally walked in my mom while she was wrapping presents. There was this awesome set of children’s luggage and this sweet little stuffed turtle. Being the youngest girl in the family, I knew it was for me. Imagine my disappointment Christmas morning when I unwrapped all of my presents and there was no sweet, cuddly, soft turtle. I don’t recall saying anything. I do recall the crushing sadness. I really loved that turtle.

Imagine the joy, the bliss, when I opened one small piece of the new luggage and there was my turtle! I still feel that magical moment. My parents must have been smiling inside, waiting for me to find that turtle.

On a happy note, I just had a birthday yesterday. Yep, my son’s birthday was the 20th and mine was the 29th. His due date was on my birthday but he came early! I look at him, over 6ft. tall, and still see that little baby. I spent the day decorating for Christmas, then we had pizza and a bunch of movies. We stayed up way late and ate a lot of popcorn. Fun times!

Now for the book news. Got lots to show you and a bunch of freebies for ya!

So, what did you get to read this week?

Got any recommendations?

I’d love to know and thanks so much for visiting fuonlyknew.

Comments
  1. That’s quite an assortment of books. I have been getting a lot of print books I probably won’t read. I have too many and someone sent me a real doorstop of an ARC. I can’t see getting to it. My post is: http://fangswandsandfairydust.com/2014/11/sunday-love.html

    • fuonlyknew says:

I’m pretty much caught up on my print books. It’s that huge batch on my Kindle that’s got to be reckoned with. LOL

  2. Oh, how sweet that you got the turtle! I love that story….and happy birthday! My second son’s birthday is Oct. 5 and mine is the 25th….

Saw him and two of his kids for lunch yesterday.

I can’t even remember a special Christmas gift…my parents were all about giving practical things…LOL.

Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.

  3. Lola says:

I am definitely the type who prefers to do shopping early. We already did most of the christmas shopping last week, although I still have no clue what to buy for my mom. I usually think in advance of what I plan to buy, although the specific product I choose in the shop usually.

As a child I always remember I loved Sinterklaas (a dutch holiday for kids) and Christmas. It was always so fun to see all the packages under the tree and gues which ones were for me. My favourite christmas package I ever got is probably my Kobo e-reader, whcih I got 3 years ago I think. From when I was a child I can’t remember any specific present that stood out, we always got fun things though, but I can’t remember anything specific from the top of my head at the moment.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I don’t have a lot of shopping to do. I usually do impulse buys as they make the best gifts. I see something, think of someone, and the gift is perfect:)
It was fun to wonder which packages were for who. We weren’t allowed to touch them so the excitement was rampant. LOL

  4. Happy Birthday to both you and your son, Laura! I think it’s kind of nice that he’s got his own b-day 😀
The Cover for Counterphobia is positively chilling! I think I’d be afraid to even open that story.
You got so many exciting-looking books, though. I hope you’ll enjoy them all.
I remember the people and the good feeling of Christmas much more than any one present. Although I think the skates I received when I was four were a big hit, and I still enjoy skating.

    • fuonlyknew says:

He came early. I’m glad that he has his own birthday, yet we usually celebrate them together.
That turtle just stayed with me. That and those mornings when we all got up and waited for the list!

  5. What a great book haul! I see several cozy titles in there I’m pretty curious about. What a sweet story about your Christmas. I’m sure your parents were beside themselves waiting for you to find that turtle. I remember a bike I really wanted but thought for sure I wasn’t going to bet. I remember being so thrilled when it was there Christmas morning! Have a great week!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I’m sure my parents saved all year to be able to buy those presents. There were six of us kids. They always made it special:)
I confess, I grabbed some of those freebies. LOL

  6. I love Crosby and have Passing Through Perfect on the schedule for January.Awesome haul..looks like you had fun browsing and shopping for books!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I do have fun browsing for the freebies. Now, I just have to resist grabbing them myself. LOL
I love Bette’s books and especially love the Wyatt series.

  7. bluekaren says:

That is a great Christmas memory!
When I was six, my father died on Christmas eve. All of my childhood memories of Christmas revolve around that loss. Even hearing Christmas songs was hard for me as a child. Now that I have children of my own, I have many great memories thanks to them, and I enjoy making new ones for them to enjoy.
Great haul. Have a great week!
    Here’s my STS/Sunday Post

    • fuonlyknew says:

I’m so happy that you’ve made new, special memories. I lost my sister this year and I feel her absence, especially now.

  8. Greg says:

Happy birthday! Pizza and movies- sounds good to me. As far as memorable presents- I can’t think of any one thing that stands out, but I did often get gift certificates for Waldenbooks or various bookstores. Usually a $20 one- which bought a lot of books back then! LOL.

    Have a great week.

  9. yvonne473 says:

Hey, we have the same birthday! Mine is the 29th. We had pizza, too, and watched our shows on DVR. I’m a happy camper 🙂 Anyway, Happy Birthday to you!

All of your books look so good.

Nothing really stands out for me as far as gifts go.

  10. That’s such a lovely story about the turtle! Christmas wise I don’t think I ever had a REALLY stand out present (they were all pretty good) but as an adult it was getting cake tins that make miniture loaves and minature Victoria Sponges. Present as a child was getting a toy monkey for doing well on a spelling test!

  11. Whoa, so many books! Happy birthday to you and your son.

What an awesome idea your parents had, so clever! I can imagine your disappointment at not getting the turtle and then the excitement when you opened the luggage! Sneaky parents. 😀

    Have a good week. 🙂

    • fuonlyknew says:

      Thank you Bea!
The feelings when I discovered that turtle are still so strong. My parents made that one day of the year last all year for us:)

  12. I love the turtle story! Hmm. . . best/most magical present. I think the best one was my guitar, the year I was in 9th grade. I didn’t expect it at all; I was totally surprised. I still have it almost 40 years later – and I still love it.

You had a great haul of books this week – have fun reading them all! And happy birthday to you AND your son!

    • fuonlyknew says:

      Thanks Lark!
I wish I still had that turtle but I don’t think stuffed animals have a long shelf life, especially when you get them as a child. LOL

      • No, they often don’t last. I still have the bear I got at age 3 (49 years ago!), but his fabric is rotting and I don’t dare hug him except very gently. He was my bedtime companion clear through college.

  13. That’s a sweet story about the turtle. I can’t recall any present that has given me a fond memory like that one. I’m sure one will come to me when I don’t have to try and think of it LOL.
Happy birthday to you and your son I hope you both had fabulous days.
    Have a great week.
    Sharon @ Sharon’s Book Nook!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I wish I still had that turtle. LOL
Thanks so much, We had a wonderfult ime celebrating our birthdays and spending time together.

  14. katarguelles says:

Happy Birthday to you and your son! I planned both my pregnancies so my oldest daughter and husband birthdays are 6 days apart (they are both Virgos so that was a big mistake – they are both stubborn lol). And my youngest daughter and I share our birthdays (July 7). We are both easy going but she is still stubborn sometimes (she must get that from her Dad lol). I hope you both had a great day!!

I love your Christmas memory, that was a really sweet story. And your parents are really creative with the names on the gifts! I can’t think of a Christmas memory, but I’m sure it will come to me later lol.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and have a great week!!

    • fuonlyknew says:

Thank you! That’s some pretty close planning. I didn’t plan ours. In fact, I shouldn’t have been able to get pregnant, which makes my son an extra special gift:)
I couldn’t do the tradition with Christmas with my son, as he’s an only child, but we do try to make the day special each year.

  15. Great haul, and your freebie section wreaks havoc on my ereader every time I visit, I had to restrain myself and only get three..lol. Enjoy your new reads!

Have a great week and thanks for stopping by my blog!
    Stormi

  16. Celine Frohn says:

I don’t have to buy many presents, so usually I get them done around this time. And we eat at a family member’s house, so I don’t have to worry about cooking anything either 😀

Great list of books you have there!

  17. Emma says:

Happy birthday to you and your son.

  18. I think I am ready for Christmas! I am almost done with xmas shopping and just have my husband left. I have no idea what to get him this year. He doesn’t want/need anything and I don’t want/need anything. We are just lost this year for each other! Happy Birthday by the way. My favorite gift…. humm… honestly I have loved the gifts I have received as an adult much more then when I was a kid. I loved getting a Nintendo one year. Also… a boom box. I love music so that was a fun year.

  19. Love that story! What an awesome way to keep you guessing.

  20. Nyze says:

Sweet story! Happy Birthday to you dear Laura and to your son ♥ More to come!

    WeeklyWrap@EverythingNyze

  21. I’m a total last minute shopper. I usually spend November and December dropping hints to ask what people might like and then actually go shopping on the 22nd/23rd.

Love that story. So cute! My parents had a tradition where they would leave some small gifts under my bed on Christmas morning (such as a colouring book, books, selection box) and then I’d get a bigger present (often a game or teddy du jour) under the tree. In all honesty though, I remember the little gifts under my bed more than anything else.

    • fuonlyknew says:

That’s so sweet. I usually loved those small gifts too. They were usually something I loved and could never get enough of:)

  22. Wow, you got lots of scary looking books leading up to Christmas! I hope you enjoy all of them, that’s an epic haul.

  23. Naomi @ Nomi’s Paranormal Palace says:

Wow!! What a haul!! Look at those AM Hargrove books… Edge of Disaster looks yummy! And I know what you mean when you look back at your kids… mine are still little, but I do it now too!!

Thanx for visiting My Weekly Wrap-Up!
