It’s been a strange week for me. Nothing stands out but I just felt off.

Maybe it’s the post holiday blues.

One thing that’s helped is reading. A lot of it. I’m into so many different genres right now and found some new authors to follow. I’ve also picked up some new Netgalleys.

There’s something that I’ve been curious about. How do you choose the books you purchase? I mean besides already having read the author.

Do you go by the reviews? If so, do you focus mainly on the 4 and 5 star ones? Or do you like a mixed bag of good and bad ones?

What catches your attention first? Is it the title? The cover art?

Just wondering:)

I’ll be hopping over to check out your Sunday posts so be sure to leave me your link!

Comments
  1. Great haul! I grabbed up a few of those freebies as usual. 😉

  2. bluekaren says:

So many new books. You are reading more variety now. I am looking forward to read those reviews. Missing in Paradise has a great cover. I kind of go by the covers when I pick a book. I also read from recommendations or what books get buzz. I look for certain genres when I pick books. I read the premise, but I think we both know how off that can be.
    My Sunday Post

  3. Oh my goodness, Laura, what an amazing haul! I’m glad books have been there to keep you company during this ‘off’ week, and I hope next week will be a great one in every way.
When I buy books, I check out my favorite bloggers for their reviews, I don’t read reviews on amazon or other book-selling platforms.
    Happy reading 🙂

    • fuonlyknew says:

I did get some variety and some new authors!
I never read reviews before mine is posted but I do check out ratings from other bloggers I follow.

  4. Emma says:

It could be the January blues. I’ve a touch of them too. That’s a lot of books you have there!
I choose a book in genres that I love. If I don’t already know the author, the artwork and blurb play a big part in my choosing to buy a book. If it the story sounds like something I’d be interested in, I give it a shot.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I think you’re right Emma. I just felt like I was in slow motion. LOL Back to myself now:)
Authors I enjoy always get my vote. I also like to browse for new genres and authors.

  5. Iza Bzh says:

I love the Medium dead cover 🙂 I usually choose my books… because the author is a must-read for me, rarely because of the blurb but mostly because of reviews and why people loved/hated it – what might be a turnoff for some might be a turn on for others 😉 Have a great week !

    • fuonlyknew says:

I couldn’t resist Medium Dead even though I swore no more Netgalleys until my reviews were caught up. LOL
Mixed ratings can get me to give a book a try. It makes me curious.

  6. So many books! Enjoy, and thanks for sharing.

I pick new books based on my love of the author, but I am finding many new-to-me authors that I love. Sometimes I become a fan after reading an ARC from Amazon Vine…and other times, I notice what other bloggers are choosing…and if the blurb grabs me, along with the cover, I give them a try.

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

    • fuonlyknew says:

If I enjoy an author I’ll read any genre they write in. Finding new ones is sometimes harder. I’ve been very fortunate and discovered some wonderful new authors and books just by impulse buying. LOL

  7. krazaykris says:

I don’t really buy books. I borrow a lot from the library but when it comes to purchasing, I only buy books that I know I’m going to love (read it for review or from author/series I love)

    • fuonlyknew says:

I buy a lot of books. Especially if it’s the next one in a series.
The library in my town doesn’t carry a lot of the authors I enjoy. My best bet is the used book store. They know what I like and I can spend hours in there browsing!

  8. Greg says:

It’s kind of funny, I get book ideas from blogs, memes like this, and it’s not even reviews usually. More often I see a book and I’m like, yeah that looks good, and I try it. Usually works out. 🙂 And cover art is big for me- shouldn’t be, but it is.

I had a little post holiday blues too, but am over it now. I miss the holidays when thy are over.

  9. Oh, as always you tempt me! I added the brownie book and I’m looking at a couple others.

As for buying, these days, except for freebies and library books, I mostly stick to tried and true authors. I am stingy about spending my book gift cards and my cash budget is small so these days I rarely take risks on unknown authors. Now, freebies, libraries, and review books, I’m more willing to take a chance. I am typically caught by the title or cover but if the blurb doesn’t catch me, I pass. Unless it gets really wonderful reviews from bloggers I trust, then I might take a chance.

    • fuonlyknew says:

What better then free books! LOL
I’m glad I asked this question. We all have some similar methods and some different. Some eBooks can be very pricey. Those I think hard about before buying. I’ll sometimes buy the print copy because the prices for each format are similar.

  10. Lola says:

I am sorry to hear this was an off week for you. Hope next week will be better. And yay for reading making you feel better. I just send you a friend request on Tsu!

Concerning your question about how I decide which books to buy. As I don’t have a lot of moeny for books I mostly buy books from authors I already know. Those have priority, after that it becomes a bit of a mix. I usually look at the cover and blurb, but a good review from a blogger can also convince me to read it. Sometimes only reading the cover or blurb can be enough, but often I stil check it out on goodreads and read some reviews. I also have some elements, like original topic, well doen romance and good world building which I value very much and if a reviewer or blurb mentions one of those things it can more eaisly convince me to read it.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I’m me again! I think it was the weather! It’s been so bitter cold and I work outside so I froze my bootie off. LOL
I never read the reviews before mine is posted but I do check ratings and sometimes the mixed ones are a reason I try a book.

  11. alisbooks says:

With buying, I tend to purchase books of authors I already love. I’m always giving new authors a shot, though. That takes place from review requests (if the blurb sounds like something I’d be interested in), trying books that are free, or from friends or other bloggers raving over a particular book. Hope you pull out of the funk soon!!

    • fuonlyknew says:

That’s pretty much how I do it too. The freebies are great too. It’s nothing out of pocket so I tend to try new authors more.

  12. Wow awesome haul and as huge as my tbr pile is ..a couple of these have me curious so I wrote them down. Enjoy my friend and I hope this week is a thrilling adventure

    • fuonlyknew says:

I’m glad some caught your attention. I try to choose freebies that I think others would enjoy. I now and then throw in some debuts so we can sample a new author without throwing away money!

  13. Oh I hate when I’m feeling just off. If there’s a reason I can fix it but if there’s nothing really wrong than there’s not much to about it. Hope you’re feeling better! I have Medium Dead! I’m really looking forward to that one. As usual your freebie list is seriously tempting me. Have a great week!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I’m feeling like me again. I never thought about the weather! It’s been unusually cold here in the south. That could have been part of it!
I’m glad I tempted you.LOL I have fun browsing and sometimes take hours finding books I want to put on here.
I can’t wait to read Medium Dead too. It sounds so good.

  14. Berls says:

I’ve felt kind of off this week too – I think it’s the weather for me. I hope this week is better for you. As for how I buy books – I buy authors I know well (especially established series), books friends have reviewed and sound good to me (and I trust their opinion) and the cover art really gets me. I buy too many books though, so I’m working on slowing my roll there LOL. Have a good week 🙂

  15. yvonne473 says:

This has been a strange week for me too. I guess it’s something to do with the post-holiday season.

I buy books based on authors or series I’m familiar with. Or if someone I know recommends a book highly, I’ll take a look at it.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I guess we all feel a little off after the holiday madness. LOL
There are so many ways to choose a book. Sometimes I just go by impulse:)

  16. Barely Alive looks like it will be a good one. Hope you enjoy and have a great week.

  17. Liza Barrett says:

You really do have quite the variety of genres in here. The Chronicles of Steele book looks pretty good; I just picked that one up — thanks for sharing! And I’m really curious to read your reviews on The Accidental Alchemist and Strange Magic — they look like they’re both right up my alley.

    ~Liza @ Classy Cat Books

    • fuonlyknew says:

If only I could read 24/7! LOL I loved The Accidental Alchemist. It was much more than I expected. And Strange Magic was crazy good.

  18. shannyreads says:

That’s a lot of blog activity this week! And great haul. The Brownie Taste-off book looks like a lot of fun. Thanks for stopping by my blog, happy reading! Oh, and I’ll be friending you on Tsu haha (:

  19. My friend Ed, who is a dinosaur reinactor would love the cover of Dinos Ate Paris. Hope the dinosaurs did not get indigestion. Thanks for coming by!

  20. katarguelles says:

This was a bad week for me too. I think we are all trying to settle back into our normal routine after the holidays but it is just taking longer for it to happen lol. You got a lot of books and I hope you enjoy them!

To answer your question I have to admit the cover catches my eye first then I’ll look at the reviews. If I notice a lot of negative reviews I sometimes go to Goodreads to see if anyone I follow has left a review (since most of the time we have the same taste in books). I try to wait until it goes on sale if it’s a new author to me. I only buy full price books from my favorite authors. This was a great question!

I hope this week goes better for both us and enjoy your new books!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I think you’re right. It’s just post holiday blues taking a little longer to go away:) I feel like myself now:)
Covers are definitely first. And I do add a lot of books to my Amazon Wish List so I’ll hear about sales. If I bought every book I wanted at full price, I’d be broke. LOL

  21. Wow! Looks like a busy week. Those cozy mysteries look cute! I think my mom is starting to get me hooked on them. Ahh!
    Have a great week!

  22. Christy says:

Hope next week is better for you. If I’m not already familiar with the author … I don’t know, I grab a book if it catches my attention and sounds like something I’d like. My mood is a big influence.

    • fuonlyknew says:

My mood does affect my choices. Glad you mentioned that!
This week is already better. I think I was just a little blue like Emma mentioned.

  23. For me I pick up books based either off an author I have already read or off reviews. It is the reason I picked up Twilight years ago because everyone was talking about it. Same goes for the Throne of Glass series. Usually for me at least if a lot of people enjoy a book I typically do also. Hope next week gets going a little better for you.

    • fuonlyknew says:

Word of mouth is one way I choose too. There are a couple of series I’m getting ready to read because I think everybody but me is reading them. LOL

  24. I choose my next book to buy by a few different things. The author, books that keep appearing on blogs and recommendations from others.
I hope you enjoy your new books and your week.

  25. Amazing haul! I’m drawn to several of the cozy mysteries you’ve featured.

  26. atothewr says:

I usually go by the author – if I have read and liked them before. That’s how I chose my books most of the time. When it comes to authors I haven’t heard of covers, blurbs, reviews, and maybe word of mouth get me to purchase those books.

  27. Oh my! Lots of awesome looking books there. I’m going to have to investigate a few as well. 😀 Hope you have a great week. I think it’s the after-holiday’s blues. It’s hard once all the visiting and rush of the feel with holiday being over.

    Take care!

  28. Jan says:

When I pick books I read the synopsis and if friends who read similar books have reviewed the book I check those out. The price also makes a difference or if I can find it at the library. I seldom buy a book over $7 or $8 from an author I haven’t read before.

You got a real mix of books this week, Laura! I hope you have a great reading week.

    • fuonlyknew says:

My favorite used book store is my usually place to buy books. I pay half the book price of trade 2 for 1. They even call me when something comes in they know I’d want. How cool is that!

  29. Looks like you got some neat books and are ready for some reading

  30. Dreams says:

So many books up there! I just read Chronicles of Steele: Raven, it was pretty good. I haven’t read any of the others, so I have quite a few new books to check out.

    • fuonlyknew says:

Great! I spend several days and hours searching for books to post here. I try hard not to download all of them myself, but I grabbed quite a few this week. LOL

  31. Naomi @ Nomi’s Paranormal Palace says:

Wow! What an awesome haul of books. hope you enjoy them all.

When buying books, I try to begin with a sale for new authors, and they tend to be one’s a see a lot of over social media… I look at star ratings and i try the first few pages of the book if I can 😉

    Naomi @ Nomi’s Paranormal Palace

  32. Phew, that’s a lot of books! Have a great time reading – and choosing which ones to read next!

I tend to buy only books by authors I love. If a book costs $2 or less, I’ll sometimes buy based on reviews or recommendations by people I trust, or just because it looks really intriguing. (That goes for Kindle or used print books, since obviously new print books are almost never under $2.) I discover new “favorite authors” through the library, or because someone gives me a book by that author, and these days through NetGalley as well. I’m cautious – I want to be sure I want to read (or re-read) the book before I buy it!

    • fuonlyknew says:

That’s one good thing about eBooks. You don’t always have to spend a lot to get them. Though I love print the most.

  33. You got a lot of books this week! They are all new to me but I hope you enjoy them.
Most of the time I only buy books from authors I already know. Or sometimes when I see a book that has really great ratings on Goodreads then I might buy it as well.
Thanks for stopping by my blog!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I buy a lot of books by authors I enjoy. Even when they gift them I’ll often buy the other format to support them.

  34. Shandy says:

Great haul! To answer your questions, I usually go by title or cover then blurb. Unless it’s from someone who I know enjoys the same books as me, I don’t bother with reviews. Thanks for visiting Mama Knows Books

  35. Vilia says:

Nothing beats personal recommendations. You just need a few bloggers whose interests mirror yours and you can’t go wrong.

  36. I don’t recognise any of the books you have, but I like the look of some of them :).

As for books I buy. It’s a split choice. Most of my books are from authors I LOVE and automatically buy any book they publish. For new authors its either if the book sounds interesting, if I like the free sample pages, and very rarely if it gets a good review. I don’t tend to go from reviews as I have found that some books people rave about I am one of the few that doesn’t like it.
