Book Description

Common threads have always woven through the world’s mythology and folklore, strings which seem to link cultures divided by the vastness of oceans and time.

Have you ever wondered why? What if I told you that they all stem from a single origin…..the Varth-lokkr. Within this ancient creature’s blood, stirs the power to save or enslave the world as we know it, a power ignited by a simple word. But which does it truly desire?

This dark urban fantasy follows one of these creatures through its emergence into 21st century Australia. It chronicles the rise of those who oppose it, those who ally themselves with it and those who are unwillingly drawn into its wake.

Shed the blood. Speak the words. Change the world.

Excerpt:

“Don’t move or we’ll fire,” ordered one of the guards, his voice shook and his trigger finger twitched. Gudrik glared at him and swiftly shot towards George, who was now leaning over the stainless steel top rail, still scouring for an escape which didn’t exist. The guards began to fire wildly at him. They may not have seemed overly competent, but they could shoot. Several projectiles tore through Gudrik’s flesh as he moved, spattering blue onto the grass. Startled by the gunshots, George spun just in time to see the scruffy relic hurtling towards her. A bullet buried into Gudrik’s knee. He stumbled. Before she had a chance to react, Gudrik crashed into George. His momentum forced her backwards, toppling them both indigently over the safety railing in a tangled mess of arms and legs.

The pair rocketed towards the ground. George screamed profanities so coarse that they blistered the very air around her. She scrambled and flailed as if trying to climb back up Gudrik’s body. He wrapped himself tightly around her. “Earvictius groot,” he bellowed.

His bullet wounds glowed, and the tender flesh surrounding them began to transform into cold, speckled granite. The stone rapidly spread along his limbs and across his abdomen, searing with pain as it went. He cringed and grated his teeth. As it spread across his chest and onto George she began to scream as though he were slashing chunks of flesh from her. Thankfully, the agony did not linger and in the blink of an eye, stone had completely swallowed both of them. No matter how hard she tried George could not move. It was both claustrophobic and frightening.

The living statues whistled closer and closer to the ground. Until……SMASH! They crashed unhindered onto the roof of a parked car. Glass and shrapnel exploded from the vehicle as they tore through the chassis and into the road beneath.

Just as painfully as it had spread, the rock retreated returning the flesh to its vulnerable state, leaving it sensitive and speckled with sweat. Both lay for a moment of recovery. Their chests heaved deeply as they came to terms with what had just happened. Gudrik crawled out of the mangled wreck and climbed to his feet. “Are you harmed?” he grunted, lifting George to her feet.

She was pale and disheveled with blank shock clouding her eyes. Time was of the essence. Gudrik slapped her across the cheek. Fire filled her blank eyes. She swung a punch, which he avoided. He grabbed her shoulders and repeated his question, “Are you harmed?”

“I-I’m confused as hell,” she responded, panicked, but glad to be alive. “But fine. I think. Yes fine. Definitely ok,” she stammered nervously, quickly checking her body over for injuries and pulling her dress down to cover the lacy black panties on show to the world. Her hand quickly went to her locket, checking it was still there. “Was I made of stone then?” Gudrik ignored her question. His attention was otherwise occupied. By that stage, a huge crowd of onlookers and good Samaritans had gathered around their impact point.

“We must keep moving.”

He dragged his hand along a twisted shard of the car’s metal shell and spoke, “Unjallius.”

Gudrik groaned as huge, white wings tore from the flesh of his back in a puff of loose feathers and a splatter of blue. They stretched to a massive, elegant span and quivered in the sun. The suit jacket and shirt were left torn and tattered, spattered, stained and hanging in shreds from Gudrik’s muscled shoulders. The stunned onlookers stepped back in awe. He grasped the confused woman tightly and with a few powerful beats of his mighty wings launched the two of them into the sky.

George clung tightly as they whipped and glided through the city. They weaved between the highrise buildings, slowly gaining altitude and suddenly plunging toward the ground as Gudrik negotiated the unpredictable up-drafts above the busy city streets. George was not as terrified as her brain insisted she should be. She loved the speed, she loved the wind and she loved the gaping faces of the populous below. It all exhilarated her. Gudrik’s grasp was gentle and caring, but still so firm and reliable that there was no fear of falling.

Finally, Gudrik surged up and breached the top of the sky scrapers. The onlookers below were now nothing more than ants. George released her grip on Gudrik and shielded her eyes. The sun was much fiercer up there without the buildings’ protection. She swivelled and squirmed as she gathered bearings. “Land on those cliffs over there,” George said pointing at a small lookout point above the river.

Gudrik dived and swooped in, gently putting the two of them down on the grass in a rapid flutter of tiny wing beats. “Gratitude,” Gudrik grunted as the wings collapsed into a sprinkling of blood.

Book Description

Things are on the up for Sophie Morgan.

She fended off vampires on a holiday to Antwerp, escaped them on her return in Coventry, stabbed her neighbor and is slowly rebuilding her life in her hometown of Bethel. Running the family property business may not be lucrative but she’s happy. Since returning to Wales, she has only had to kill one vampire and thanks to the linoleum on her kitchen floor, even that was an easy clean up.

Then a mixed blessing arrives in the form of Mickey Kelly, the barman she had a brief flirtation with in Antwerp. After being missing for months, he arrives on her doorstep one rainy night. His brother has been murdered and vampires are coming for her. Little do the pair know that Sophie’s estranged father is among their numbers. He’s coming for his daughter… and he’s not the only one.

Death in the Family is the long awaited sequel to Relative Strangers, with some familiar faces as well as some new ones.

Will Charles Ferrers, Sophie’s former adversary, pursue her to South Wales and if so, to what end? Who is the mysterious man following her? Will Sophie and Mickey finally consummate their relationship and where will it lead them? Or will there be more than one new man in her life?

Find out how our practical, resilient, if not slightly insecure, Sophie deals with a whole new range of challenges in the second in the ‘Sophie Morgan vampire series’. This time she has bigger problems than vampires to deal with. This time she has family visiting.

Death in the Family is the second Sophie Morgan vampire book and will be available from Amazon from 14th February – the perfect valentine gift for the vampire slayer in your life!

Excerpt

Julie was beautiful in her sadness. The faint lines, that had started to form around her eyes, reminded him of the laughter he had missed, the private jokes which they should have shared over the years. Her red hair was still fiery but had mellowed to the colour of ancient amber, the freckles on her arms blended from summers in the sun so that her pale skin now had a healthier complexion.

A hunger surged inside him. He ran his fingers through his hair and tugged at it. Julie was a matter of moments away. All he had to do was call her name, knock on the window, rip off the door and announce himself to her, take her in his arms, slip his tongue around hers, press his teeth into her flesh, own her, be with her, climb into her and walk around in her flesh, in her heart, in her soul till they both descended into rapturous madness.

In the flood of hitherto suppressed emotion that washed over him, Kasper forgot himself for a second and lost himself in Julie. In that moment, he was with her, stood next to her, cradling her in his arms as a father, a lover, a son. He wanted to be everything to her, to show her the world.

He didn’t hear the footsteps that quietly crept up from behind him, cushioned by the damp grass and soft soles. Nor did he hear the rustle of coat sleeves as the arm swung back and launched the tyre iron at his skull. The swift thud of metal against flesh was barely audible, as was the gentle plod of footsteps making away with his limp body across the lawn.

Enjoy this glimpse inside the book!

They hadn’t gone more than a few yards when the amulet around Iskra’s neck began to vibrate and a strong lemon scent assailed her nostrils. She was right. The earlier tingle had been a warning. Her eyes swept the area in front of her, but nothing appeared wrong or out of place. Every one of her heightened senses was on high alert as she continued forward more cautiously.

A faint noise to her left drew her attention and she spun around, immediately adopting a fighting stance. As she turned a group hiding behind her pounced. One clambered onto her back and put a sack over her head while others with ropes slung over their shoulders and around the back of their necks tried to grab her arms.

Iskra dropped into a crouch, swinging one leg out in an arc as she did so. Two of the attackers fell to the ground clutching the bloody wounds on their legs. She brought her head back hard and fast, ramming the nose of the assailant on her back, and smirked at the satisfying sound of crunching bones. Blood poured from the wound, spraying some on her hair and neck. As he slid backwards, his claws raked through her clothes leaving long gouges down her back. She muffled a cry of pain as she pushed the sack from her face.

Now she could finally see, but the view was not pleasing. Iskra was surrounded by eight uninjured and furious vampires, snarling and baring their fangs. Her thought processes sped through various scenarios and she decided on her course of action. Using her peripheral vision she spotted the gap she needed on her right.

Taking two small steps to her left, she leaned in the same direction with her hands buried in her pockets, and the gang mirrored her movements – exactly as she planned. Pivoting on her left foot, Iskra suddenly spun kicking out with her right boot, catching three of them; two suffered nasty groin injuries, with blood spurting from severed arteries and a set of genitals lay on the ground like discarded meat. Another tried to pick up his intestines from the floor and stuff them back into the gaping maw of his stomach. Pulling her daggers from their hidden sheaths, she hurled one, watching it spin flatly through the air. As it hit the target, the head was half severed and the blade stuck in the vertebrae of the neck. Fountains of crimson fluid initially jetted into the air from either side of his neck then settled into a steady flow coursing down his body. She leapt onto the beleaguered assailant and gripping the handle, completed the decapitation. One of them made a grab for her arm and she slammed her elbow back, catching him in the shoulder and sending him whirling into a tree. Lashing out with both blades and clipping someone’s shoulder, she vaulted through the gap she had seen earlier and sprinted away; the remainder of the group, who were still able to, gave chase.

The gang crashed through the undergrowth after her, not caring how much noise they made. An aggressor threw a long-bladed knife at Iskra’s back; it whistled slightly as it cut through the air, alerting her. She dodged to the side just in time – the weapon caught the crease of the sleeve on her jacket, leaving a small rent in the material. That was a bit too close for her liking. She zigzagged through the trees curving back toward the manor; once she was back in the grounds, it would be over.

A familiar scent floated into her nostrils and she grinned. She changed direction again and headed straight for Pavel and Luka who raced to her aid. She slowed slightly to give her pursuers an opportunity to close the gap. As soon as she caught sight of her husband in the distance, she halted and whirled around to face the gang, a wicked glint in her eyes and a sardonic smile on her lips. A dagger was clutched in each hand, but apart from that she appeared relaxed. The mob approached warily. They had already seen how she single-handedly decimated four of their number and injured three others.

Suddenly, one of the mob spotted the two men closing fast. He yelled “RUN!”, and without waiting for his cohorts, turned and followed his own advice, sprinting faster than he had ever done before. They ran off in all directions with Pavel and Luka chasing them half-heartedly. The attackers crashed through the undergrowth, seemingly unconcerned with the noise they made, and not daring to turn around and check if they were being followed.

As Iskra watched the departing backs of the gang, she hoped they took the message back with them that the vampires from the big house were deadly.
