Some chit chat.

The other night I had just finsihed reading a book and I glanced over to my nightstand to see which one I’d read next.

I had to laugh. There are two stacks there. One is books I’ve finished and need to write reviews for and one is the next books in line to be read.

I’m sure I’ve mentioned that I prefer to read print books over eBooks. Not to say I don’t read eBooks. I love my Kindle and wouldn’t have discovered so many amazing authors and books without using it.

It’s just that I find it easier to flip back and forth in a print book when I want to check back on something I’d read. Plus I love the smell of them. LOL

My kindle lets me highlight quotes I want to glance at when writing a review, but print books are a different story!

how i read books 001

how i read books 006

That’s what some of them look like after I mark points in the book I want to reference in my reviews.

Something else interesting. Many times, when I’m writing my reviews, I don’t even end up using these tagged sections. I just get going on the review and don’t need them. But they are handy for adding quotes I liked.

So, which do you prefer. Print or Ebooks? And do you use highlights or bookmarks?

I’ll be hopping over to check out your Sunday posts so be sure to leave me your link!

    By the inch! What fun.

All your tabs of paper sticking out from the books waiting to be reviewed reminded me of seeing little yellow ribbons in some of the books at my local library. They are narrow ribbons as could be used for bookmarks, like those which are sometimes actually attached to the spine of older books. I happened to check one out (I think it was The Time Traveler’s Wife) and asked the librarian. She told me that they were in books which hadn’t been checked out in so long and had been pulled to go into the sale. But these seemed interesting, so they replaced them on the shelves instead of consigning them to the sale room.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I’ve actually found ribbons in books from the library. Never knew what they were for. I just left them in.

  2. Elizabeth says:

I prefer a “real” book for flipping back, as you do. I use the Kindle app for iPad and can’t seem to use the bookmark feature properly, so I don’t flip back with that. But, I really like reading Historical Fiction or books where the setting is important because I can look things up.

  3. I use the highlight feature on my Kindle as I read. I also use a highlighter in my physical books to go back to. I don’t put in a bookmark or slip of paper, though. I just thumb back through until I find what I’m looking for. I find that even though I highlight stuff on my Kindle, recently I have been totally leaving out quotes. I throw in my favorite ones that provide transition in my reviews.

  4. Yeah, those books I’ve read but still need to review are building up, too, Laura! I prefer e-books, I hardly ever buy paper books anymore, especially because I don’t like marking up my books… which I have to do for class, of course. But my kindle is so handy, keeping track of all my highlights and notes, and if there’s something I want to go back to, I can usually find it fairly quickly then, too.
You got a lot of new books this week! so your stack next to your bed will grow 🙂
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

    • fuonlyknew says:

My kindle is getting old and twitchy so it’s sometimes difficult to get the highlighter to work. And I just love print books.

  5. When I am going to review a book, I prefer reading the print ones, for the reasons you mentioned. But I have turned to e-books more and more, as my bookshelves were overwhelming with print books and I had to do some purging. With the e-books, I can let them rest in the “cloud” until I can get to them…LOL.

But yes, it is not as much fun to read them.

Enjoy your new books…I am curious about Dead Little Dolly.

    Here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

    • fuonlyknew says:

I love my kindle. It’s convenient and sometimes it’s the only way to read a book ,but print will always be my first love.

  6. love ebooks! Easy to store and keep so many books!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I second that. But there’s something about print books. The smell, the feel, the look, the smell…..LOL

  7. Karen Blue says:

I need a good library book sale. Great haul! I also love print books over ebooks. Although it is so easy to switch to listening when I have chores to do with an ebook. Thanks for all the freebie links!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I was surprised that I didn’t find more at the sale. Most of them I’d already read. Says something about how much I read. LOL

  8. I am a Kindle girl. I just find it so much easier to read. I also have a growling list of books read that need reviews – it can be quite daunting to look at! Have a great week!

    • fuonlyknew says:

The kindle has lots going for it and I love mine too. But print books will always be my favorite. I don’t know why I think I’ll be caught up on reviews as I’m always grabbing new books. LOL

  9. I do highlight and bookmark when I’m on my Kindle Paperwhite, but I don’t always go back and look at those, either! Sometimes I use post-it notes in print books. I keep a big spiral-bound notebook for reviews and such – I’ve started jotting down notes and page numbers for quotes in the notebook, and sometimes draft the whole review in the notebook as well. But I’m thinking of switching to a more portable notebook.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I use a notebook too but mostly just to keep track of whether it’s a print or ebook and when it’s due. I think I’ll do like you and add notes. I keep a pad of paper by my bed so why not the notebook! Thanks! I use word to draft my reviews.

  10. Until Morning Comes sounds like it will be a good one, hope you enjoy and have a great week!

  11. Great haul – library book sales are the best! To answer your question, I prefer print books. I honestly don’t even use the highlight function on my Kindle. There’s too many buttons in the Kindle app, then I end up losing my page. It’s all just a mess. I like tabs and bookmarks, though. Sometimes I just use tabs AS bookmarks.

    • fuonlyknew says:

My kindle is getting worn out and I often have to reboot it so when I use the highlight, a lot of times it freezes it up. So frustrating. I plan to buy a paperwhite next.

  12. Liza Barrett says:

I rarely highlight OR bookmark pages or passages. I probably SHOULD because there ARE times that I want to reference a line or two. Unfortunately, most of the time I know the lines I’d end up wanting to reference by the end of everything aren’t the ones I would mark as I was reading. Thanks for sharing the freebies — looks like there are some good ones in there!

~ Liza @ Classy Cat Books

    • fuonlyknew says:

I enjoy hunting for the freebies. Sometimes there are hidden gems you might not have discovered!
There are times where I’ve taken copious notes and never even glanced at them when I wrote the reviews. LOL The reviews just seem to write themselves.

  13. LOL, looks like you need to write some reviews. I love print books too, but unless it is hardcover I need to use glasses..and prefer my Nook since I can adjust font and read without them.

    • fuonlyknew says:

Yeah. Lots of reviews to write. LOL I like the font feature too. Some ARCs come with tiny print and even with glasses are hard to read.

  14. amyh90 says:

    Hi Laura,
My jaw dropped at how organised your tags are for the printed books! I like highlighting mine on my kindle, usually in yellow 😀 I dunno it just seems to stand out more lol. I get intimidated by the size of physical copies so I stick with my kindle now unless it seriously can’t be helped… problem is I miss the smell 🙁
Great post Laura 😀 Loved it.
    Amy x

    • fuonlyknew says:

It does make it difficult to read them sometimes with all of those tabs sticking out. LOL And I’ve recently read some books over 700 pages and they are huge. I love it though!

  15. Lola says:

I mostly read on my Kobo e-reader as most review copies I get are in e-format. Although I also like readign paperbacks, it’s nice to have a real book in your hand, although I tend to tap the pages at first before realizing that it’s a paperback. I use bookmarks to keep track of where I am. I don’t use the highlight function, not sure why, I never really had use for it.
It’s fun to see all those paper straps poking out from your books. I hope you’ll enjoy your new books and have a great week!

  16. I have leaned towards using my ebook more just because of space..I don’t have enough space for all the print books I would love to have. I have realized this with my decluttering I have been doing. That being said I still like prints because I love holding a book in my hand and I love the smell as well..lol.

Great selection of books you got this week. 🙂
    Stormi

    • fuonlyknew says:

It is easier with a kindle. You store them all in a small device. But print will always be my favorite. Like you said, the smell…….LOL

  17. That is a lot of post its! Since I don’t have an ereader, I usually just take my phone and type out the quotes I like in a note. Sometimes when I’m really lazy, I just take a picture of the page. I definitely prefer physical books, too, mostly because ebooks hurt my eyes, to be honest. And I find myself skimming a LOT more with ebooks for some reason.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I never thought of taking a picture! LOL That’s not lazy, that’s convenient. LOL I find I get addicted to clicking to the next page, like I have to hurry.

  18. That’s a neat way for your library to do book sales.

I like both print and ebook. I read a lot of ebooks, mainly because I always have my phone, and it’s a LOT easier to read standing in line, waiting in the car, while eating, etc. Not that I didn’t used to do these things with a physical book, but a phone is so much easier to hold. I mostly review ARCs, so I usually try not to quote too much unless it’s just a sentence, so I don’t have that bookmarking problem.

  19. Deborah says:

Wow! A huge pile of books there. I get really stressed if I have too many reviews to write so force myself to stop reading for a few nights until I get them under control. I’ve (ahem) had an incident or two when I’ve left it too long and struggle to remember what the book’s about. Indeed I wrote almost an entire review once before I realised I was writing about the wrong book!!!

  20. Very nice book haul. I like both eBooks and paperbacks. It just depends on the mood I’m in what I read. I do lean towards eBooks; because they are easy to have, don’t take up space, and I can use my phone for them though I do enjoy a good book, the smell and feel you just can’t replace that feeling. Have a great week! ^_^

  21. yvonne473 says:

I’m almost 99% converted from a print book person to an e-book person. I love my Kindle and, if I have a choice, I always pick and e-book over a print book. Part of the reason is that I can make the font bigger. For me, it seems like print books are getting smaller and smaller. Plus, I just don’t have room for all the print books anymore. I’m already in the process of donating all my print books.

I hope you enjoy your books and have a great week!

  22. I so prefer Kindle to print. I find it so hard to switch between. I’m waiting to try to get a definition to come up automatically in a print book!

  23. katarguelles says:

Wow, that was a great sale! I see some books that I’ve been wanting to read! I hope you enjoy all of them.

I prefer ebooks. It’s easier to hold (I have some signed paperbacks I want to keep new looking lol) and my Nook holds thousands of books. But when I do read paperbacks I also use post-its, just to flag pages for quotes or some info I might want to mention. But I also don’t always use what I flag in my reviews.

    Have a great week!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I love the sales. I can usually find some books that I’ve been looking for to finish out a series. With quotes, I don’t always use them but they do help me to remember something I wanted to say.

  24. shannonmiz says:

Whoa, that library sale is amazing! You got some great books there! As for your question… I prefer print books, but I think I am becoming a bit of a book hoarder hahha. I do read lots of ebooks too, but those are mostly review copies at this point. Hope you enjoy all the new books and have a fabulous week!

  25. With the popularity of e-books, it can feel kind of out of place to still have an addiction to print books, even in the blogging community! While I love my Nook, nothing is better than a print galley or purchasing a pint book. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who thinks so!

  26. atothewr says:

I am like you, enjoy the Kindle and what it allows me to read from smaller authors, but there is nothing like a book in print. Just something about it.

  27. I prefer print books as well, but I read a lot of ebooks and now I listen to audio books a lot now too. Now I want to go to a library sale! I need some new books! (No, I don’t, lol)

    • fuonlyknew says:

Oh. I should have mentioned audibles too. I do like them and listen to them while I work. I’ve yet to review one though. Need to get on that!

  28. Dreams says:

I love my nook and kindle, but I prefer real books. One, I won’t take my high value tech to work, that’s just asking for trouble. And you’re right, it’s just so much easier to skim back over the book when you need to. I find myself doing that a lot when I read the newest book in a series.

Great haul! And congrats about winning a book and getting two!

  29. Drat! I missed Gator Moon, but I did pick up a couple others.

    sherry @ fundinmental

  30. Wow, look at all those books! I hope you enjoy them all 😀 You are not alone! I love the ‘feel’ of a book but I could never bring myself to highlight in a physical copy, which is why I tend to prefer ebooks. But I like that I can use my bookmarks and colorful sticky notes in a book! Have a great week, happy reading 🙂

  31. Naomi @ Nomi’s Paranormal Palace says:

I mark print books like that too… lots of tabs sticking out.
I don’t mind books either way. Kindle or print, I’m not fussed.
Enjoy all your new reads… jealous of your Karsak books… I loved both of them!

    Naomi @ Nomi’s Paranormal Palace

  32. Melissa (My World...in words and pages) says:

Oh I’m sooooo glad I’m not the only one that does that to her print books. lol. Although…I use different color stickies. They help differentiate between character, world building, and plot items when I’m reading. lol.

Do hope you enjoy all your reads!!
