Some chit chat.

I have been so frustrated this week. I was without my car for three days and finally got it back. Needed a new radiator. Only one day later, I watched it being towed out of my driveway. Back to the shop for a leak. I think it’s a small hose. Crossing fingers!

Needless to say, I was boiling over as was my car!

It made me think what it would be like to not have a car. How would I get to work? To the vet? To buy groceries? So many things that you need a car for. I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. Well, maybe I would. It’s not very fun.

My car is well over ten years old. I should be looking for a new one. But I’ve already put a lot of money in it. Much of the parts are new. The engine has been rebuilt. Which brings up the question, when do you stop pouring money into your car and go get another one.

There’s a hitch to that, though. I don’t have the money to buy another car. So it looks like for now I’ll be spending more money. I just want my baby back!

Something else new this week. The police have been out in force. They have cops dressed in plain clothes stand on the side of the road with cardboard signs. People think they are homeless men, begging for money. They don’t even read the signs that state they are cops and you’ll be ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt or for texting while driving. One lady was pulled over after she drove by a cop without her seatbelt on, putting on her mascara, and texting while driving with her knee.

I usually know when someone in front of me on the road is texting. They swerve all over the place, speed up and slow down, and drive me crazy. I stay way back from them so I won’t get caught up in the wreck if it happens. I tried one time to text and almost hit a mailbox. I was on an empty back road and just seeing what would happen. Are people nuts?!!!!

I’ll be hopping over to check out your Sunday posts so be sure to leave me your link!

Here are my new books for review.

A Big Fat ZERO!

I can’t believe it. It’s been so long. If you saw my schedule for now through the end of September, you’d understand why I didn’t take in any new ones. I even have some for October and November but trying hard to cut back and review books that I’ve won or was gifted or downloaded for free.

Not sure how long it’ll last, but we’ll see. LOL

Sorry to hear about your car! I had my car taken to the mechanic too 🙁

It is scary how much we depend on our cars (and other commodities) maybe that is why I like dystopian/apocalyptic book so much 🙂

You can indeed love them as they are your baby 🙂

I alaos got ticked about three weeks ago for not wearing a seatbelt 🙁

    Texting is definitely dangerous.

Thanks SO MUCH frr all the freebies! I got them ALL 🙂

I hope you visit my sunday post 🙂

Yeah, around here we one private taxi service and a few local buses but you have to schedule a pick up.I’m working on getting my son a car so we will have a back up.

    • fuonlyknew says:

Enjoy those freebies. I’ve already read a few of these some time ago and enjoyed them. I try to pick ones that I’d recommend and add a few new authors too.

  2. fangswandsfairy(alt) says:

My car died on the highway Friday while I was driving to the shop. Now, here’s the deal: It is 10 years old but just over 100K and I am getting a new one this fall. Since it is still worth quite a bit, we have been putting some money in and had some rust fixed and got new tires. But having a new alternator installed went past that. Plus it died on the road and I was lucky I could even pull over. I was two miles from the dealer. It was so dead, I couldn’t even use the hazard lights.

I got a kick from the cover of “If Only I Could Talk” as I used to wish the cats could talk to me. I realized, eventually, that I would hear
    Feed me, no not that,
    mom she’s looking at me,
    pet me, no, not there,
    wake up,
oh were you sleeping? and all the stuff young ones complain about.

    • fuonlyknew says:

That’s terrible. You didn’t even make it to the shop. I knew mine had to be towed but the last time I managed to drive it to the shop. I wok as an auto detailer and we also have a mechanics and tire center so it’s convenient but we no longer have a loaner car. And my bosses were out of town for their daughter’s college graduation so they couldn’t help. Luckily my brother picked me up and we went to buy groceries together. I loved the dog books. My dog almost speaks and I’m afraid to hear what he’d have to say. LOL

  3. Oh, that’s too bad about your car, Laura. It’s really stressful when something goes wrong with a car. Good luck. I hope these are the last problems for a long time.

You’ve got some really good looking books for review and good for you not getting new books! Hope you have a great week.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I’m hoping it’s an easy fix and can get it back Monday!

I did just today accept one new book for review. I didn’t hold out long, did I? LOL

  4. I’m sorry to hear about your car! We’re having some struggles with my daughter’s car right now where it just feels like we’re constantly replacing stuff. But we don’t want to buy a newer car right now and if we can just get her to Auburn where she’ll be going to school she won’t really need a car very much because they have really great public transportation. Definitely not fun!
That’s interesting about the police in your area. We definitely need more of a presence here to control speeding. We have people flying down what are essentially neighborhood roads but I know they do the best they can with the resources provided. The woman who got a ticket definitely deserved one! It’s amazing she didn’t have a major accident. Have a great week and hope you get your car back soon!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I did come to a point on my back up car where I sold it instead of pouring more money in it. The people who bought it said their mother has the same car and they were going to use it to replace parts of her interior and other stuff, so it worked out great. Just didn’t get much for it! LOL
They showed the ladies picture on TV. Just a glimpse but I bet people who knew her recognized her. LOL Serves her right!

  5. Great post Laura and I am sorry about your car. We all do the best we can and who can ask for anything more. Isn’t that a song? LOL Wishing you good luck with the hose!

    • fuonlyknew says:

Yeah. Turns out they have to do the blown head gasket. Will be without my car all week:( About cried at that!

  6. Jenna @ Rather Be Reading YA says:

I’m sorry about the car. I hope the repairs don’t cost too much. My car is only a few years old, but I’m going to need new tires soon and I don’t want to think about all the things ahead I’ll have to pay for. My husband isn’t really a car guy but we were able to do a few simple things on it recently.

  7. Prior to watching Princess Sophia I only worked 2 days a week and it was within walking distance so when my husband’s car died we made the decision to only keep one car. I don’t miss it, if I need it we drop him off at work.

  8. I’m so sorry to hear about your car. I was just thinking to myself this morning as I drove to the donut shop and passed an older man I’ve seen several times before riding his bike (in full blue jeans and long-sleeved dress shirt in this Central Texas heat) how thankful I am that I have a car and I don’t have to worry about it dying on me somewhere. I did have to live without a car until I was more than halfway through college (and I was an almost six-year undergrad!). I walked one summer more than two miles to work one way, and then the car that I did get had so many problems. After three years of putting more money into it than what I paid for it, I had to get a new vehicle. I fully appreciate having my Jeep!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I wouldn’t mind riding a bike, or even walking, if it weren’t so far away. It’s a 20 minute drive. Who knows how early I’d have to leave to get there. LOL

  9. Greg says:

I don’t get the texting thing- I practically went off the road once just dilaing a number! And yes, you can usually tell. 🙂 I had to chuckle at that story you told about the woman getting ticketed- not the time to multitask LOL.

  10. Yvonne says:

I know that feeling when your car is out of commission. It’s horrible…especially when nothing is within walking distance and there’s no mass transit in my area(that’s how it is for me). Anyway, I hope everything is okay with your car now.

All of those upcoming books look good. Enjoy them!

    Have a great week!

    • fuonlyknew says:

It’s too far to walk and now I’ll be without it all week. Could be worse though. Could have been unfixable:)

  11. Lola says:

That must be frustrating to not have your car and especially with how when you just got it back it had to go away again for another repair. I hope it get’s fixed soon! I don’t have a car and mostly get around well. Although two weekends ago when we had to got to the emergency vet and it took us 1.5 hours with public transport compared to 0.5 hours with a car I did agree that cars sure can be handy. The public transport here is pretty good, so that’s nice, but if you have to go somewhere in a hurry cars can be faster often.

I never understand why people text when driving, it’s dangerous and most things can wait till you’re home. Or you can pull over and text before driving further.

It sure is nice to have a week with no new books for review! Have a great week!

    • fuonlyknew says:

It’ll be a week before I egt it back. Too bad I live in one city and work in another!
I don’t know how they text and drive either. I saw one driver texting who run another car off the road and they didn’t stop. I’m sure they were so busy with their text, they never even noticed!

  12. Uck, car trouble sucks. Hope you get it fixed and it stays that way for a long time. 🙂 I ended up grabbing a couple those freebies..good for you for not getting any review books..it worked for me for about two weeks then I fell of the no review book wagon…lol.

    • fuonlyknew says:

This should be it for a while. Just have to get through this week:)

I caved and took a review request Sunday afternoon. LOL Just couldn’t pass it up. But I am starting to cut back for the fall. Want to do Halloween and Christmas books then.

  13. Kathy says:

Sorry to hear about your car problems! We recently bought a new car since fixing our old one wasn’t worth it. My husband is a mechanic but he said the part alone would have been over $3,000. The older car was just a big headache and this would have been a second major repair done to it. So we decided to just get a new car. I hate having a car payment but just like you said we need a car for work, the kids, & errands.

I’ve also stopped requesting ARCs to focus on the books I already have. Hopefully I can keep this up for a couple more months lol.

    Have a great week!

  14. I had zero ARCs this week, too. All of the ones i requested on Edelweiss a couple of weeks ago during my reading slump are still sitting there. I have really no books for review this month. I am going to read an ARC that pubs later in September, but that is only because I have quite a few I need to read for October. I wish I wasn’t in such a slump because I could be getting tons of “me reading” done. I don’t have a car, but I live in the middle of a city and i can get a bus pretty much wherever, i want to go, but I will say in the frigid winter it is no fun waiting for a bus. The city’s remedy for drunks sleeping in the bus stop shelters was to take them away. I go grocery shopping with my sister. Plus working mostly from home helps. I hope your car can see you through until you can afford a new one. I am always worrying about my sisiterss van conking out for good, too. Have a better week carwise and make sure you get some relaxing done.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I’m doing okay with Edelweiss. It’s Netgalley that I’m so behind on. Plus I have lots of books from authors that I want to get to.
It turned out to be a major repair but not so bad I’d not fix it.

  15. Christy says:

You know what, if you keep taking your car to the same auto place … try a different one. Seriously. And especially don’t use dealership mechanics. A GOOD mechanic and good care could keep your care running fine for many, many years. But yeah, it can be super frustrating and expensive. Hope you have a better week and enjoy your books.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I never use a dealer mechanic. They always want to fix what doesn’t need to be fixed and cost too much. I trust my mechanic, he warned me this was coming. We just thought we could do a temporary bandage on the head gasket and that failed.

  16. Red Iza says:

I know what you mean, my car is old too and every time I climb into it, I wonder if it’s going to break somewhere on the road (it’s happened before !) but since I can’t afford a new one and couldn’t sell it if I tried, it will have to do. Fingers crossed !

    • fuonlyknew says:

I don’t trust mine right now. After I get it back, I’ll feel just like you for a while:) Crossing fingers for both of us!

  17. atothewr says:

Sorry to hear about your car. I can’t believe people text and drive. I just don’t see how they think it is safe.

    • fuonlyknew says:

It is what it is. My brother has this saying, “It’ll be alright.” Sometimes I want to bitch slap him. LOL
There’s nothing safe about texting and driving. I think they need to be locked up. It endangers everyone on the road. Won’t allow it when I’m a passenger in a car either.

  18. Oh no. Sorry to hear about your car. I can understand though. Sounds like you’ve replaced a lot on it so maybe the small hoses is all will be left to replace for a time? Hope it returns and runs like a dream for you. 🙂

    Have a good week!

    • fuonlyknew says:

Turns out it’s a blown head gasket. I knew it was coming. Just hoped it would last a while longer. Hopefully this will be it for a long while!

  19. Emma says:

Just picked up Clockwise. Thanks, Laura.

  20. shannonmiz says:

Ugh, sorry about your car! I feel your pain, mine is a 2002 (so.. 13 years old? Yikes.) and my husband’s is a 2004 so.. yeah, we’re basically a mess. But it’s the same problem- we NEED the cars, and have no money to get a NEW one. That’s the crappy cycle- if we HAD money to fix the car, we’d just buy a new one, and we don’t have MONEY to buy a new one because we had to pay to fix the OLD ones. You see? It’s like a never ending cycle of car hell 😉

Also, people are ridiculous. Some of the things I see while driving… ::shudders:: And good for you for trying to cut down on the review books! I have been trying to do the same but.. it’s too late for that at this point 😉 Hope you have a fabulous week, and that the car stuff isn’t too serious!
