Then go over to Freda’s Voice and leave your link so we can visit your 56!

My 56 for this week is from

Genre: Non-fiction, animals, short stories

My 56 from the paperback.

“I’m a mechanic and a welder,” he said. “But there’s nothing out here for either. I’ve looked and looked. These dogs are my family; I hate to have to sell them, but I just can’t afford to feed them.”

He kept saying it over and over. He didn’t want to sell them, but he couldn’t afford to feed them. An awful look came over his face every time he repeated it. It was as if he might have to give up a child.

This man is living with his two dogs in the back of his truck, covered by a camper shell.

My Review

How do I review this amazing book?

I laughed. I cried. My heart ached, and filled with joy.

Many people contributed to this wonderful collection. They share their tales of rescue, healing, unconditional love, and letting go.

Heroes of all shapes and sizes roam these pages, both animal and human.

It’s a large book yet it reads fast. The chapters are short, most are two to three pages, and there are some fun cartoons scattered throughout.

I can’t urge you strongly enough to read this book. It’s now found a permanent home on my coffee table. I pick it up often. Open to a random page. And read again.

Synopsis

Animals bring out the goodness, humanity and optimism in people and speak directly to our souls. This joyous, inspiring and entertaining Chicken Soup collection relates the unique bonds between animals and the people whose lives they’ve changed. Such as the dolphins who helped a paralyzed woman heal when doctors offered little hope; the dog who brought life into a failing marriage; the kitten who helped a mother mourn; and the flying squirrel who taught a man the power of laughter. Packed with celebrity pet-lore, Chicken Soup for the Soul relates the unconditional love, loyalty, courage and companionship that only animals possess. Just like our furry, feathered and four-legged friends, this enchanting book will bring a smile to any pet lover’s face … and it’s housebroken

  1. Not ever read one of these books but if I did it would have to be this one. I love pets and have way to many but wouldn’t give up my fur babies for nothing. 🙂

  2. Sounds like a good one to me. Can’t resist a critter story, especially when it evokes so many emotions. 🙂

I couldn’t resist the title and cover when I spotted this in my favorite used book store. Now I want some of the others!

I love chicken soup books. They always make me smile and leave me feeling happy.

  7. That quote is so, so sad!! And of course not being able to keep his dogs would be like having to give up his children 🙁
I’m so glad you loved this collection, Laura! It sounds amazing.

I wish there had been a more upbeat excerpt on the page. The book isn’t all sad and you’d be pleasantly surprised at the outcome for this scenario. My fur babies are members of the family and this little chapter had me crying and smiling.

  8. Harvee Lau says:

Pets become family after a while, for sure.

  9. Kathy Martin says:

This sounds like a book that would touch any pet lover’s heart. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Happy reading!

  10. kgriffin3227 says:

The 56 sounds so sad. I’d hate to give up any of my dogs, they’re like children to me. I guess if I couldn’t feed them though, I would have to. So sad. I’m glad you enjoyed the book, I might pick it up myself sometime if I don’t mind shedding some tears. Thanks for visiting my blog! Happy reading!

  11. I am so glad I visited your blog. You see, just this week I was considering removing the Chicken Soup books from my library because students aren’t checking them out anymore. Maybe because I haven’t highlighted them. I used to love the Chick Soup books and will keep them now.

  12. Christie says:

This made me so sad 🙁 I have 4 dogs and would hate to be in this situation.

  13. These books were huge when I was a kid. I never got around to reading the pet lover’s edition though. I know exactly how this man feels, pets can feel just like kids sometimes. Great pick this week!

  14. I don’t think you could ever go wrong with a Chicken Soup book … they’re great for snuggling up and reading when it’s so cold! 🙂
