My Review

I’ve read another book in this series and was looking forward to seeing old friends and getting to know some new characters.

The story takes place in Michigan and that’s a big plus as I grew up there. Always fun to see if you recognize any of the locations.

It was so fun getting to know Clyde. She, yes, Clyde is a woman, is quirky, tough, sometimes naive, and very impetuous. She keeps you on your toes and sometimes you’ll want to shake her. LOL

It’s almost time for the Zombie Fun Run. Clyde waited too long to start getting in shape and wishes she’d chosen to be one of the zombies instead of a runner now. Hopefully she won’t be the only one struggling when the zombies come after them.

She also has some unexpected guests to contend with too. Clyde’s sister, Grace has shown up, along with her husband. Grace hasn’t set foot in Crystal Haven in many years, shunning the town and it’s claims of paranormal talent.

Clyde’s radar is telling her something bad is coming, and sure enough, someone is found dead during the zombie race. All the way dead.

With startling secrets revealed, there ‘s a plethora of suspects to choose from. Time to put the special talents to work and find the killer before more bodies turn up.

What a fun story. I love the paranormal element. It would be fun to live in a town where everyone plies their abilities. All those shops with the unusual wares to peruse. I could pick up some special teas and get my fortune told on any given day.

I’m huge on stories driven by genuine characters, and their are plenty here. The author throws in some ringers so the mystery isn’t easily solved. There’s some romance, not too much, just enough to make you smile. And something’s always about to happen.

Welcome to Crystal Haven. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the visit as much as I did.

Synopsis

Psychic Clyde Fortune and her zany family are back in the fourth in the national bestselling series from the author of A Fright to the Death.

Former cop and novice psychic Clyde Fortune finds herself in a race for justice when a Zombie Fun Run turns deadly…

All of Crystal Haven, Michigan, is psyching up to participate in a Zombie Fun Run organized by Clyde’s nephew Seth, but Clyde is fretful about the undead festivities. For one thing, her sister, Grace, has unexpectedly returned to town after fifteen years. For another, Clyde has the nagging feeling that something is about to go wrong…

When one of the zombie runners is found murdered and then Grace disappears, Clyde realizes her grim premonition is dead-on. Now, she and her police detective boyfriend Mac must find a ghoulish murderer before someone points the finger at Grace. And when a tangled web of family secrets and old grudges combines with a mysterious case of stolen diamonds, even someone as quick-witted as Clyde might not be able to outrun a killer…

I hope to read the two I missed. Summer’s here soon and that’s when I devour books out by the pool. Should be able to catch up then.

  12. holdenj says:

While I prefer to start at the beginning, if it’s not too far along, I don’t mind leaping in, especially if the cover and synopsis are fun! Thanks so much for the chance to win!

  18. Dawn Eastman says:

Thank you for featuring the book! And good luck to all the commenters! I like to start at the beginning of a series, but if there are a lot of them, I might dive in and catch up later.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I’m thrilled to share your book. Have enjoyed another in the series. Now to get to the first one. LOL

  19. Peggy says:

Because I do Read & Reviews, I often I jump into it anywhere in the series.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I do too. In fact, most of the time I’m somewhere besides the beginning in a series. I do plan to read each book eventually and am working hard on that this year.

  20. Meg C says:

I’m somewhat OCD, especially when it comes to books, so it’s a big deal to me where I start a series. The few times I can remember starting with something other than the first in a series (including one where I ended up accidentally starting with the second in the series), I ended up nearly driving myself crazy trying to track down the previous ones in those series. So not a state I prefer to be in. Thanks for the chance to win.
    robbfan141729@yahoo.com

    • fuonlyknew says:

I try not to think about it too much when I start somewhere besides the beginning. My hard part is deciding which series to catch up on first:)

  21. I always start at the beginning. Sometimes I will read the ending, because the suspense is driving me crazy.

  22. Meredith Miller says:

I like to start at the beginning when I can, but will start anyplace that I can get a book to read.

  23. Sharon F. says:

I prefer to start at the beginning but will start anywhere when the series is new to me. Then I go back and read the previous titles in the series. Mfg20A@aol.com

  24. Michelle Fidler says:

No, I never start at the beginning of a series. I don’t mind reading # 5 in a series and later # 2. I don’t read books in a series back-to-back. I have lots of books so I mix them up. I’m lucky to read a few in a series in a year! I don’t keep up with many series but I’ve read most of Laura Childs’ teashop books (except for the last two).
    catbooks72(at)gmail(dot)com

  25. Sounds like you enjoyed this one as much as I did!

As for starting at the beginning or jumping in, it depends on the type and genre. I have no problem jumping into a romance series out of order, because each book stands on its own merits (almost always.) Mystery series also usually work almost as well out of order as they do in order, but if I can, I prefer to read in order. That said, I’ve discovered several series because I got to read an ARC of an upcoming book, and when I liked it, I went back to read the earlier books. Fantasy more often works best in order, although with long series of related books like Anne McCaffrey’s Pern novels or Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar books, you can read some out of order. Trilogies and other multi-volume story arcs I always read in order.
