My Review
Cozy mysteries are one of my favorite genres and I’m always excited to start a new series.
Having read Tonya’s Ghostly Southern Mystery series and started on her Laurel London series, I knew I’d be reading more of her books. She has so many different ones too. Check them out. I bet you’ll find some you want to read.
Kenni Lowry follows in her grandfather’s footsteps and gets elected as sheriff in the small town of Cottonwood, Kentucky. Crime has been nearly non-existent, until the local doctor is found murdered.
With re-election coming up fast, Kenni has got to prove to her voters that she can do her job, and do it quickly and to their satisfaction.
And that’s Just one part of this story.
Everywhere Kenni goes, it seems someone is urging her to go see her mother. Not something Kenni is looking forward to. They used to have an easy, close relationship. That is, until Kenni took the job of Sherriff. Her mother thinks it’s no fitting job for an eligible single woman and makes her point every chance she gets. Kenni doesn’t want to deal with the aggravation and you can see where that is going.
Kenni’s also hearing things. A voice no one else hears. It has a familiar ring to it. And when she’s doubting herself and her capabilities to handle a murder investigation, that voice supports her with simple advice. I kept waiting for Kenni to accept that the voice was her long dead Poppa. That he’d come back from beyond to help her. Once she finally did, the story got even more fun.
Kenni is easy to like. She’s funny and outgoing, with just enough tough stuff to make you want to vote for her. I could see her navigating the town in her old jeep, her dog’s head hanging out the window, ears and jowls flapping in the breeze, cruising for trouble and dodging her mother.
Kenni has even more reason to avoid her mother now that there’s a possibility of romance. Boyfriend material is slim to none in the small town until help in the investigation arrives in the guise of the handsome, tall, drink of water, Officer Finn Vincent. He’s on loan to Kenni until she gets a new deputy, and I think he’s a perfect fit for her, as does her mother. Lots of fun with that. The scene with the towel full of holes in all the wrong places was too funny.
I also loved how genuine the small town felt. Like how Luke shows movies in his basement, using a sheet for a screen. I live in a small town and we sometimes have movies projected onto a large screen in the park. Everyone brings blankets or chairs and settles in. Doesn’t matter what the movie was, though I liked some that Luke was showing.
I hope you get a chance to read Fixin’ To Die. You’ll get in on a brand new series from the beginning and probably snort and giggle here and there as you get to know these characters up close personal like.

Synopsis
Sheriff Kenni Lowry likes to think the zero crime rate in her small town in Kentucky is due to her being sheriff, but quickly discovers her grandfather’s ghost, who happened to be the town’s retired sheriff, has been scaring off any would be crime. Poppa has come back from the great beyond to be Kenni’s deputy after the beloved town doctor is found murdered.
Ghost or no ghost, time is of the essence. After all, re-election isn’t far away and Kenni doesn’t want to look for a new job anytime soon.

She has some great stories and characters, doesn’t she!
I agree about the setting. I always love the cast of characters.
marypres(AT)gmail(DOT)com
Setting, characters, lighter murder mystery. It’s all good!
Sounds like a lot of fun!
It was. I’ve enjoyed many of her books:)
This one has been on my radar for awhile. I love the small town feel of cozy mysteries (probably because I’m from NY) and love to try and guess whodunit. Thanks for the giveaway.

I live in a small town. I swear I know some of the characters portrayed in cozies:)
I like the way people come together to help each other. The settings are usually small town, which I love. jawdance@yahoo.com
I like that too. Friendship is a big part of cozies:)
I love the plot twists!
Me too. I’m following those clues, making guesses, and sometimes I’m right and sometimes I’m wrong. It’s all good fun.
I’m reading this book now and loving it!
I smiled a lot. Love it when a book makes me feel that way.
I love the small town and quirky characters that are easy to picture being friends with.
Living in a small town myself, I feel right at home with cozies:)
I love everything; the small town, the cast of characters, and the who done it!
I’m with ya!
I love stories set in small towns and strong female characters like Sheriff Kenni.
Me too, Joy:)
Kenni Lowry for President! I love this new character (and series). I could live in Cottonwood.
She is strong, yet vulnerable. I’m curious to see her grow in her job.
I love trying to figure out who did it. While drinking coffee.
Hot tea or iced tea for me!
I love a good mystery!
I do too. I get excited to see if I’m right and have a lot of fun getting my answer.
I love that small town feeling and all the crazy characters! I love Tonya Kappes books! Thanks for the chance!
She sure can make her characters live and breathe, can’t she:)
I love getting to know the characters and their families!
diannej at mpinet dot net
I do too. I’m big on character driven stories!
I love getting to know the main character and their family/friends!
You can say that again! LOL
So far I have loved everyone of her books.
So have I and looking forward to reading many more:)
I love cozy mystery books because they offer more than a “murder.” I enjoy the culinary references, helpful tips on hobbies or facts and history on a specific location. Although with reading sometimes quirky stories, I google and gain some bit of fun information. You won’t find recipes in a Tom Clancy or Stephen King novel!
Good points. Themes are so fun in cozies and I also love it when the animals have roles too.
Cozies are just that–cozy, fun, and greatly entertaining.
Don’t forget addictive!
They are fun to read.
Sure enough:)
Because they tend to have charming characters around their mysteries that you fall in love with and want more of… I have the ebook so you don’t have to include my name…good luck to everyone, if you haven’t read it yet, you will love this book! <3
I do love the fun characters, and living in a small town, I can relate so well to them.
love a cozy mystery because they are usually based in small towns, have a host of characters who are sometimes eccentric, and the characters intertwine.
Well said!
Ooh, the coziness!
LOL Amen!
Great story love Kenni, love cozy mysteries
I feel the same:)
SUCH a fun read!!
You betcha!
I’m glad to see you enjoyed this one! I have this and the the first book in her Ghost series and am really looking forward to reading both of them.
You are going to have some fun! I want to try some books from her other series too.
So AWESOME!! Thanks for having me!!
My pleasure for sure! Looks like a lot of people feel the same way about your books:)
Love that it keeps me guessing on who might be the killer plus it’s an adrenaline rush.
Especially if we guess early on and it turns out we picked the right villain! LOL
I love the characters and the small town feel.
Me too. I live in a small town and always feel right at home in the cozies.
I love cozies because you get a hint of mystery and romance with no gory details or suspense. They’re usually filled with great characters in settings I could see myself living in. Tonya’s books always deliver!
I second all of that. And happy to meet another fan of Tonya’s books!
I read some pretty dark stuff, so I like to pick up a cozy between these darker reads to ‘cleanse the palate’ and throw open the blinds and bring back in the light.
Exactly. That’s how I became addicted to them though. LOL Love your description:)
I like the funny cozies the best. There is enough serious crime in the real world! I want to escape all that, not wallow in it!
I like the darker stuff but need a break from it now and then. I always have a stack of cozies to grab whenever I want to smile.
Can’t wait to read my copy! Cozies are my favorite. I sent you a friend request on Goodreads. 🙂
I’m a cozy addict. LOL Thanks for friending me. I’ll be sure to friend you too!
I have this one coming up to review for the tour. Not read her books but always wanted too so excited to be trying one. 🙂
I have a feeling you’ll like this one, Stormi. I’m reading another one of hers right now and will be sharing my review this month.
I love the way the characters interact with each other.
And some of them seem so familiar. Feel like I know them!
I love the characters, the town etc. I really like the combo mystery and paranormal. This is a great new series.
I didn’t pay attention to the blurb and the paranormal bit caught me by surprise. A fun surprise too!
I like a bit of humor and that the gore, for the most part, is ‘off stage’! Thanks!
I like to laugh and I appreciate a lighter murder mystery also.
Unique characters in novel settings. servedogmom@yahoo.com
Oh yes. The characters! And I love some of the names the authors come up with:)
I like cozies because they are fun reads and keep you guessing until the very end.
diannekc8(at)gmail(dot)com
They are fun, even if I figure it out before the end:)
So many wonderful comments. Thanks for sharing!
I love Tonya’s books!! Each one is wonderful!
They sure are and it looks like I’ll have plenty more to enjoy also!
I like that it’s a clean story, usually in a homey atmosphere. They are usually books you can share with any of your friends for a pleasant, enjoyable read.
Yes. Good clean fun:)
The bad guys always get caught!
Good one! I never thought about that:)
I love cozy mysteries! They aren’t heavy on bedroom scenes or violence and they have fun, quirky characters!!
All the things that make them cozy fun!
I love the feeling of community in a cozy series. I feel like I live there and know everyone!
Ditto for me:)
I am so excited for this book! Congrats Tonya!
It’s a whole lot of fun!
Loved the book, and love the small town setting.
I like small town settings too:) Living in a small town myself, the setting makes me feel at home.
Great new series by Tonya Kappes! All of her books are fabulous and this one is southern charm/comfort and cozy mystery at its best.
I feel the same way. I live in a small town on the Gulf Coast and that makes this one even more fun!
I love all of Tonya’s books. I am just getting started in Fixin’ to Die an so far I love it. It always great when a book starts off right away with action.
You have a winner when you’re hooked from the opening lines:)
Escaping with old friends or meeting new ones.
I so get that too!
I love that cozy mysteries are easy to curl up and get cozy with. The mystery is always fun, but they are relaxing too. 🙂
I know. They’re lighter and allow you to relax and just have fun. I’m addicted to them. LOL
My favorite thing about cozy mysteries are the characters, they are usually more relatable. Also cozies are usually more humorous that traditional mysteries which make it great for me as a reader to be able to unwind and enjoy reading.
That’s a cozy for ya! It’s why I can’t resist them:)
Just started it early this morning and just now finished it! I love Tonya Kappes’ books! I can’t wait till number two in this series!!! Tonya’s always make me laugh and are so hard to put down!
Her characters are so fun, aren’t they! I’m looking forward to following this series along with her others I’ve read.

Cozys are such fun and entertaining reads
Can’t go wrong with a cozy:)
I love the characters in cozy mysteries. Many of them seem like people I’d like to be friends with, share a cup of coffee or wine with, and help solve a mystery or two! njcar22@aol.com
I know just what you mean. I swear I recognize some of them from my own small town!
Love the characters. Kept me going until the end. Another great book by Tonya!
I second that, Holly!
I had so much fun reading this book. As the others have commented, I loved the characters and the story was really good. I couldn’t put the book down. Thank you for writing about the book and introducing others to Tonya Kappes.
