My Review

It’s funny that I love to read stories about spiders killing people when I have a huge phobia for them. Just thinking about spiders has my skin twitching, feeling them crawling all over me.

It appears that saying, “Because I can,” rings true in this story. Some people cook up something in a lab, never worrying about what could go wrong. Innocent people start dying, ripped apart.

You getting the picture? A genetically engineered experiment is loose. It’s huge. Crawls on more than six legs. And it’s so very hungry.

The plot never gets old for me. I love movies like this and the author gave me some good old fashioned scares.

It’s been said that there’s a spider within six feet of you at any given time. Creepy to think about, isn’t it?

Synopsis

Medical research? Genetic experiments? No one knows exactly what goes on inside the sprawling BioGenTech building on the edge of town. But after an enormous explosion at the facility, people in town start turning up dead…and in pieces.

Something is loose in Hope Valley. Something big…and fast…and hungry. It has a lot of legs, a nasty disposition and a big appetite. This is one spider you can’t step on.

My Review

The author sets the tone early in the book. A quiet Iowa town and it’s residents go about life as usual. Then the singing begins. Tik tik. Tik tik. And hell comes calling.

Got to hand it to the author. He gave me a new monster. And it has a friend. They don’t waste any time wreaking havoc.  By the time you hear the singing, it’s already too late.

In the beginning, I could understand how some of the characters reacted. Later on, when they knew they were dealing with something otherworldly, I questioned their actions. While you have to suspend your belief in order to enjoy a good horror story, I do feel these characters should have got their acts together sooner.  But, what’s a good monster story without some sacrificial lambs.

You won’t hear me complaining about the monster. It was bizarre. And the ending. It was a crazy showdown.

Synopsis

In a sleepy historical Iowa town, on the banks of the Mississippi River, tourist season is in full swing, and the strangest serial killer the world has ever known is roaming at will.

It begins with a mysterious house explosion, a severely burned man, and an unidentified female body. More victims follow, each killed under the oddest circumstances, each bearing an identical but unidentified wound, each attack accompanied by the most eerie, musical ticking. When the lead homicide investigator goes missing, Police Sergeant Erin Vanderjagt is forced into the fray and into a personal hell she never imagined.

Who or what could be behind the bizarre deaths, and why is Erin’s boyfriend suddenly acting crazy? Why has her idyllic world suddenly fallen apart? And – as the murders continue – what can Erin do, where can she go, how can she fight the horror… When the Tik-Tik Sings?

  1. I’m terrified of spiders! I run out of the room when I see one. I was at a wildlife park and peered in at a big pink tarantula and got so scared of it that I nearly passed out. But I LOVE spider books! (as long as there isn’t a hairy scary bad boy on the cover as I always feel it will suddenly bite me…) I have ‘Nids and look forward to creeping myself out with it! Have you read Sarah Pinborough’s Breeding Ground? I liked that!

I’m with you! Even the itsy bitsy ones scare me. I did read Breeding Ground some time ago. Still got the paperback. I need to review it on one of my Freakin Fridays. Very bizarre.

  2. The both sound like interesting reads. Have you read The Hatching? There’s a spider book that REALLY gives someone the creeps as well. I have to admit, the cover of When the Tik-Tik Sings has always freaked me out!

    • fuonlyknew says:

The monster in Tik-Tik is so out there. I had to laugh and cringe as I pictured it. I did read The Hatching and really enjoyed it. I’ve started the second book, Skitter, and it’s taking a bit to get into it. Need to pick it back up and finish.

  3. I HATE spiders but love to read about them too. Both of these sounds fantastic!

  4. Lelia T says:

I’m willing to share living space with the teeny tiny spiders but nothing bigger but I also like the books and movies. I wonder why we do that—maybe a way of living with our fears? Nah, that can’t be. I don’t want to be sucked down by quicksand and I don’t go looking for novels and films about it. Anyhoo, ‘Nids just might land on my TBR list and I would definitely watch the movie whenever SyFy decides to make one 😉

  5. These both sound kind of cool, I put them on my wishlist. 🙂
