Synopsis

During the day, law enforcement consultant Gracie Hofner is on assignment at a small San Antonio bakery, waiting for a delivery. No one knows what it is or when it will arrive. The upside? Working next to Donovan Beck, a flirty hunk and a half, who is perfect fling material.

At night, Gracie resumes her search for a little girl and her mother who went missing following a double murder. Finding the pair is imperative or the girl will become a target.

At the girlโ€™s auntโ€™s house, she experiences an unexplainable need to leave immediately. She tries to deny the urge to flee and pushes the pressure aside, but the compulsion intensifies. Gracie thinks she must have a brain tumor. Or is losing her mind. When similar events occur, Gracie hopes the new quirk will help her find the missing girl before time runs out.

The Beginning

Cold! Cold! Gracie Hofner looked down. I canโ€™t believe I did that. While reaching for her buzzing phone, sheโ€™d poured the remains of her water bottle, intended for her impatiens, over her bare feet. She pressed the button. โ€œHi, Nicky.โ€

โ€œMorning. Iโ€™ve got something you may want to see.โ€ The voice on Gracieโ€™s phone belonged to Nick Rivera, her partner.

Former partner. Their paths had been the sameโ€”patrol, homicide detectives, and then detectives in the San Antonio Regional Intelligence Centerโ€”SARIC. San Antonio Police Department all the way. Except unlike her, Nick had found his niche there.

In addition, they were friends. โ€œFun or work?โ€

โ€œNothing fun about murder, Gracie.โ€

She went inside for a pad and pencil, greeted by the aroma of the coffee that had brewed while she jogged. โ€œAre we cleared?โ€

โ€œNegative. Double homicide. Missing family.โ€

โ€œIf the familyโ€™s missing, whoโ€™s dead?โ€

โ€œHector and Therese Cantu. You ever heard of Cantu Electric?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t think so.โ€

โ€œGood reputation on the West Side. Theyโ€™ve been around since my dad was a kidโ€”started by Hector Cantuโ€™s father back in the fifties. The old commercial was like Cantu can do. Hectorโ€™s son runs the business now. Mr. Cantuโ€™s retired. Rephraseโ€”now heโ€™s good and retired. He and his wife are the deceased.โ€

She moved to the table and put her phone on speaker so she could take notes. โ€œWhoโ€™s missing?โ€

    • That whole ripe jalapeno on top in the cover image would be too much for most people, I think. But look at all that luscious and yummy dark chocolate. Truth: Now I’m hungry ๐Ÿ™‚

Authors always talk about their muses. Do you have a muse? And if so, what physical shape/characteristics does it have?

    • My muse stands behind me with a loaded .45 and tells me to write.

That’s only somewhat true. But here is a true story.

Several years ago, a muse woke me from a sound sleep very early in the morning. She took the form of a character I’d known nothing about. She kept telling me to go write her story. It was as if she stood behind my right shoulder dictating to me. I couldn’t type fast enough to suit her. Her arms were crossed and her foot kept tapping the floor.

What appeared on the screen ended up a short story, written, edited, sent off, and accepted all in only a couple of days. I am not a fast writer on my own. This had never happened before, and it’s never happened again since.

Now you know writers really can be weirdly wired some of the time ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Gwendolyn Jordan says:

    Congrats
