This is my own version of a weekly book haul and all things new on fuonlyknew.

I’m also linking up with The Sunday Post hosted by Kimberly @Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

Guess what! We got snow! Yep, it snow on the Gulf Coast. Well, to be honest, it looks like snow, but it’s actually cotton. Fields and fields of the white fluffy stuff.

From the road it looks like snow. And when they bale it up and transport it, a lot of it comes loose and sticks along  the side of the road to look like snow too.

I usually get some branches from the neighbors field and use them for decorating and to make crafty things. A huge majority of our clothes are made from cotton and it’s got me wondering, who ever figured out to use this stuff for that? Got me wondering about other things too. Like who tasted the first oyster or shellfish and figured out how good it is? You have to admit, they are ugly to look at. LOL

On to other things. You won’t see a lot of reviews this month. I usually keep my review posts light during the holidays. It’s a busy month. But I will be sharing a TON of giveaways. We all want to win stuff, right! Be sure to stop back by!

  1. Anna Knight says:

Wow! I’ve never seen so much cotton before! We sort of have our own “snow” in southern California. It’s these trees, and when they bloom they have hundreds of tiny white petals. So when the wind blows it looks like it’s snowing (the only downfall is that it makes everyone sneeze, lol). Have a good week! 🙂

    • fuonlyknew says:

Oh, we have that with the Dogwoods and the Tulip trees too. I used to have them at my old house and loved to watch them swirl through the air. Smelled wonderful too!

  2. Wow! Lots of great books you got this week and glad you got some snow!

    Here’s my Sunday Post!

Ronyell @ Rabbit Ears Book Blog and join in this week’s Book Photo Sundays!

  3. sjhigbee says:

Oh wow! I learnt all about cotton bols when I was at school a lifetime ago, but I’ve never seen a field of them like that. Thank you so much for sharing! As for oysters – I reckon the first folks who sampled them were probably desperate and hungry:)). Have a great week, Laura:)

    • fuonlyknew says:

Sarah, there are miles and miles of these cotton fields. I stopped my car and got out to walk in one. Forgot my cell phone so I didn’t get pictures of that. Darn it. Yeah, you’d have to be starving to try a shellfish if you didn’t know they were edible. LOL I love all kinds:)

  4. Jenea says:

I’ve never seen cotton while still in the fields before. It does look like snow. 🙂 It’s pretty! Your new books look amazing and I had to go and pick up a couple of the freebies too. My Kindle thanks you. Have a great week and thanks for stopping by earlier.

  5. I love the look of cotton fields!! I used to live in the south and always thought a cotton field was so pretty!
Have a wonderful December with the south’s version of snow!

  6. LOL, I was looking at the pic thinking, um that is cotton not snow. Death Doll looks interesting. Thanks for sharing your freebie finds with us.

  7. The cotton fields look so pretty! Looks like you’re a mystery lover, too. Enjoy your books! 🙂

  8. I was like, I’m from Ohio. You are not fooling me with that pic of snow. LOL I love the cotton though and I too wonder about things like, who saw an egg come out of a chicken’s (or other fowl) butt and thought that would be a good idea to eat? o.O

    • fuonlyknew says:

I took one picture that really almost looked like snow but it was too blurry. Maybe I should have used that one. LOL

  9. the bookworm says:

Pretty pictures of the cotton. Happy reading!

  10. I’ve never seen cotton growing before. Very cool.

  11. Chrissy says:

Sleigh-Wrecked looks like a good one! I’ll have to check it out!

  12. Greg Hill says:

Ha I would be shocked if you ACTUALLY got snow lol. Although I’m sure it’s happened once or twice maybe? We on the other hand will be reporting snow for real before long probably, lol.

Sleigh Wrecked and Something Down There look fun.

    • fuonlyknew says:

We’ve had a few snow days over the years. Usually it’s just freezing rain and doesn’t last long. Hoping for a mild winter this year:)

  13. Cotton fields look so cool! It’s always interesting to think about who it was to do something first.

    Have a great week!
    Stormi

  14. Wow, that’s what cotton really looks like, huh 🙂 like maaagic.
BTW, it ACTUALLY snowed here this week. Didn’t stick, cause the temperature is hovering around 0C (don’t know Fareinheit, but it’s freezing/thawing temperature). But I don’t really want it to stick xD I don’t like snow.. I don’t like winter 😀 you probably guessed 😀

I also often wonder, who found out which, say, mushrooms are good to eat? Cause when you eat a bad one, you… sort of die. And can’t tell. How did the cavemen work it out 😀

    • fuonlyknew says:

It snowed. I don’t like cold either and feel for you! And some shellffish are poisonous too. Especially crabs if you don’t know how to clean them properly. I imagine someone had to die for others to learn.

  15. Yvonne says:

    I love those pics!

Sleigh Wrecked looks good. I’m going to read that one. All your freebies look good, too. I have a few.

Hope you have a great week!

  16. I love your photos. The cotton balls look like giant popcorns. I don’t think I’ve seen cotton growing before. Have a great week!

    • fuonlyknew says:

Ha! It does look like popcorn. Don’t think it’s going to taste as good though, even with extra butter. LOL

  17. It does look like snow. You got some great books and I’m off to check out some of those freebies.

  18. I’m surprised they’ve let cotton sit for so long in the field. Ours is always baled by mid-September. Currently the fields are being plowed for the next planting before corn in the spring. Every year my mom would also get a bowl of cotton and keep! When I was little, we were surrounded on all sides by fields full of corn and then cotton with a little driveway up to the house between two fields. Hope you have a great week!

    • fuonlyknew says:

They are late this year. Not sure why. But what a yield this time! I love looking at it. I’m not surrounded that closely by crops but they are all around me on other properties. I love being in a rural area.

  19. There was a living history museum near us that had a flax barn where they prepared flax, carded it, and spun it into thread. I was always fascinated by the process. The same thought occurred to me about whoever thought of doing this in the first place. I am wondering if the museum is still there. I never hear anyone mention it anymore.🌾

I “won” one of the Purple Turtle box sets, but the iRead Tour person said she needed my phone number to claim my prize. I questioned her about that and she said that all authors and publishers require phone numbers before they ship books. I told her that I have won many many books and have gotten over 100 review books since I started blogging, and I never once was asked for my phone number. I tweeted and no one else has ever heard of it either, except once for an international mailing, but they needed the sender’s ph # not the addressee’s number. She was also very condescending in manner, making it sound like I was inexperienced and stupid. I don’t give out my phone # to people I don’t know. I am really upset because I was going to donate them to the nonprofit daycare near me. I told her regardless of what she thinks, asking for the winner’s phone number is not common and she should state that you will need to provide it to claim your prize in the giveaway rules. I am going to email the publisher to find out if they really needed it, or if it was actually something she was getting for her own information. 🙁

    Have a fabulous week. 🙂

    • fuonlyknew says:

I’m sure she didn’t mean to come across as rude. I sometimes think I might since I abbreviate sentences when commenting. I had to give the publisher my phone number to get my review copies mailed to me. Had to do it with a couple of different publishers before too. Something to do with tracking maybe? I’m sorry for all of this confusion.

      • Nope, she said I was unaware that ALL publishers and authors ask phone numbers because I am an inexperienced, and that I must never have done any blog tours or gotten any ARCs from publishers because I would know these things. That is undeniably rude. She needs to have contest rules.

      • fuonlyknew says:

Oh my. I don’t even know what to say. Are you going to get the books?

  20. I’ll take that white fluffy stuff over the cold stuff.
    sherry @ fundinmental Sunday Memes

  21. Drangonfly says:

I always wanted to visit a cotton field! The pics are so pretty! Thanks for sharing the freebies! I like how Murderous Little Darlings looks!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I just went past some of the fields and it’s all gone:( And Murderous Little Darlings is a dark read indeed with a nasty little twist!

  22. The Cotton fields look gorgeous, Laura! And you’re right, who figured those tiny little white balls would work for clothing? And who the heck would think it was a good idea to taste the snot-like stuff inside an oyster???
your new books look great – I hope you’ll enjoy them.
Have a wonderful week and happy reading 🙂

    • fuonlyknew says:

I know. I went by there yesterday and they are all gone:( I remember the first time I tried fried soft shell crabs. It’s the whole crab and looked like a big spider! LOL When I finally got up the nerve, it was delicious.

  23. I’ve thought about that with a lot of foods too—how did the first person think to use a certain ingredient in that way? I never thought about it with cotton, but you’re totally right—I wouldn’t look at that fluffy white stuff and think “clothes.”

    • fuonlyknew says:

Now that’s interesting. I do wonder about things like spices and herbs. I think ingredients have played a big part for a very long time.

  24. I love cotton fields, they’re so pretty. I had some reviews scheduled already, so those are the ones that will go live this month. I’m taking it easy as well.

Hope you have a great week.

  25. Katherine P says:

I love the cotton fields though most of the ones around here are already clear. It looks so sad when it’s all been picked. It is strange that someone ever looked at that and said let’s make clothes out of that and the food is even weirder! There’s some plant that has to be boiled 3 times to not be poisonous. Who thought of that? And who thought after the 2nd time of getting sick that they’d try boiling it one more time? Have a great week!

  26. Lelia T says:

And I’m doubling up on review posts, trying to get as many in as possible before the end of the year when they’ll start to grow mold 😉

    • fuonlyknew says:

I usually slow down on reviews as so many people are busy and won;t have time to visit or comment about them. I’m loading up on holiday giveaways instead.

  27. My mind allows boggles about the concept of the internet and how that was invented!
