This is my own version of a weekly book haul and all things new on fuonlyknew.

I’m also linking up with The Sunday Post hosted by Kimberly @Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

It’s a new year and I’m hoping the rest of it is better than the start. These frigid temps are crazy. I know many may laugh at our dips into the 20s, but, if you’re not used to it, it’s horrible. Enough already! I can’t recall ever having a winter vortex last this long. I miss warm salty breezes, birds singing, flip flops and the pool. If I got in now, I’d probably die of shock. LOL

Remember this photo from last week? How beautiful and green this was?

Well, after temps in the low 20s every night this week, it now looks like this. But, it will bounce back in the spring and probably be even larger.

My banana trees got frozen. For those who don’t know, the trees are filled with water so they freeze easily. While these look dead now, once I trim them back in a couple of months they will grow quickly and hopefully I will get some bananas again this year. I’m thinking of doing a running feature about the process once I get started.

The oranges are hanging in there. I’ve noticed the branches are dipping closer to the ground and I’m afraid they might have frozen. I’ll pick some and check them out this week.

That’s it for this week. I hope you had a Happy New Year!

  1. Greg Hill says:

I couldn’t believe the pics I saw on Facebook of snow in Florida! Yeesh it’s cold all over. Hope the bananas and oranges turn out okay. Now I want a juicy orange lol.

  2. 20s!!!!! Not thank you! My low was in the 50s this week and I’m happy to keep it there. lol Have a good week! 🙂

  3. Oh poor banana trees! It seems like you’ve had some really unusual weather. Maybe you should cover them? We have this kind of weather a lot here, so people often cover their roses and other sensitive plants with pine twigs for the winter. It works 🙂

    • fuonlyknew says:

The Banana trees are too tall to cover but they come back each year. It’s been very cold but finally seeing a break in the chill.

  4. Awww…sorry that your banana trees wilted, but hopefully they’ll grow back again!

    Here’s my Sunday Post!

Ronyell @ Rabbit Ears Book Blog and join in this week’s Book Photo Sundays!

  5. Oh your poor plants! Hope your oranges are okay.

Have a great week and happy reading!
    Stormi

    • fuonlyknew says:

Many of my plants die off in the winter. These held on as long as they could. I’m hoping the oranges are still good to eat.

  6. My one complaint about Arachnosaur (I do want to read it!) is that cover! Does there NEED to be giant hairy spiders on it???

    • fuonlyknew says:

LOL I know you like to sample books first. Have you read the sample. I think you might want to. It’s not what I was expecting.

  7. sjhigbee says:

I hope your oranges and bananas survive okay – and any unusual temperatures can be frustrating and difficult. Apart from anything else, how are your birds and insects coping? Hope the coming week is a lot warmer, Laura.

    • fuonlyknew says:

The birds seem to be fine. They come out to sing once the sun rises. And I even spotted some ants and toads so they must have places to hole up in to keep them alive.

  8. Emma says:

The title “The Ghosts of Kali Oka Road” hooked me straight away.
    Happy New Year, Laura.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I don’t normally grab all of the freebies I share. I did grab that one. Has some good ratings. It’s good to see ya, Emma. Happy New Year!

  9. I’m glad your plants and trees will bounce back. I bet the temps are a shock. We had -2 last night but it’s FINALLY going to break. Thank heavens! Our poor pups are going stir crazy. If course I had to grab that New Years Eve book. Too cute. I hope you like Something. I received it for a review and couldn’t really find much about it to like. At least you got it for free.

    • fuonlyknew says:

My brother was supposed to be down here but put it off and now he’s regretting it. LOL Even our 20s beats what he’s getting. I didn’t grab Something but thought others might want to try it. I like to share a little bit of everything.

  10. Lilyn G says:

Be careful with Arachnosaur. I can tolerate a *lot* in my quest for a good story, and I’m fighting the urge to DNF it because the secondary character is *that* repulsive.

    • fuonlyknew says:

So its not just me. I couldn’t believe that scene in the brothel. And that’s near the beginning of the book.

  11. Jenea says:

Oh no! Hopefully the banana tree and your plants will come back. I had to go and pick up a couple of those freebies you shared. 🙂 Have a great week! Thanks for stopping by earlier.

    • fuonlyknew says:

Oh, they’ll come back. They actually grow bigger after dying off. Sometimes I cut them back in the winter even if the frost doesn’t get them.

  12. Ooh, we had some cold nights…and then, in the last couple of days, it feels almost like spring, with 66 degrees. Balmy, even. But I know the cold is not over. Ours got down to the 30s, which isn’t that low considering.

Enjoy those fruit trees and your book haul. Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.

    • fuonlyknew says:

We’re getting the balmy now too. Yep, its not over. I just hope they are brief cold spells and not as long as this one lasted.

  13. I am so enthralled by your plant pictures!! I hope all the plants bounce back. Its been like negative temps here so everything is pretty much frozen. All the time. Oh well! Hope you have a great week!

    • fuonlyknew says:

Usually the sun will warm things up during the day but the temps actually dipped even lower. It’s warming up again now and I won’t even complain about the rain. LOL

  14. Oh, I feel so badly about your banana tree! It’s been deadly cold up here in Quebec (-31 F with the windchill) and we couldn’t do any winter outdoor activities. I have The Ripple trilogy but have yet to read it.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I visited your neck of the woods one winter. I don’t think I’d ever seen snow piled that high. I hope you stay safe and toasty.

  15. Literary Feline says:

I am glad your banana tree will be okay after the freeze. I’ve been following the news about the extreme cold temperatures. I hope it starts warming up for you soon.

I’m trying not to drool over your books. You’ve got some great ones there. I hope you enjoy them!

    Have a great week, Laura!

    • fuonlyknew says:

We do get a cold blast now and then in the winter. But then its usually back to 70 or even 80s. This was a long week of frigid cold and so glad its finally moving away. I’ve been snuggling in with some good books. LOL

  16. The drastic change in that plant is crazy! It’s also crazy to think of their resilience and ability to bounce back. I’ve kept mine covered. They’ll be looking a little sad, too.

    • fuonlyknew says:

These were all too big to cover. Good thing they will bounce back in the spring:) I did lose some smaller Century plants. They are full of water and the freeze turned them black and mushy. The larger ones produce lots of babies so I’ll have more this summer.

  17. I feel the same about the weather here! Most days have been in the 30s and 40s and that is FREEZING for Central Florida! Here’s hoping it warms up soon! Enjoy your new books and thanks for the freebies! The Asylum looks awesome!

    • fuonlyknew says:

We didn’t get snow like Florida got. That was crazy! I had to grab The Asylum. I like how its presented.

  18. Thanks for all the free book links 🙂 We need to be indoors reading when it’s cold outside!

  19. Those of us in the colder climates sometimes forget what havoc freezing temps can create down in your neck of the woods. Glad everything will come back, but I’m sure it’s frustrating to deal with!

  20. Daniela Ark says:

Yup it has been way too cold! Oh NO! look at your plants! I was happily getting all the freebies [thank you!] and then… OMG HELL DIVERS!!! Gotta go sorry I GOTTA see what you thought of it!

    • fuonlyknew says:

Finally warmed back up today but rained cats and dogs! Supposed to be around 70 this week. That’s more like it! Yes to Hell Divers. A wicked good series!

  21. Berls says:

I’m so with you on the cold weather! We’ve only gotten to the 20s as well, but in Dallas that’s not the norm and gah! I hate it. Sorry your plants are getting hit bad, but I’m glad they should be okay. Hope you’re having a great (WARMER?) week!

    • fuonlyknew says:

It’s been crazy weather hasn’t it! And the cold came so early this year! It’s warming up now. You getting much of that rain?

  22. Thank you for sharing. Glad that your banana will be ok. Oh it must have been frustrating for you. Anyway, your pictures remind me of my hometown. My mom loves plants. Oh, I miss her.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your books this week and have a wonderful week. ❤️😁

  23. A Renfro says:

Same here. It was too cold for too long. It got down to 7 degrees one night. Ridiculous for North Carolina. I think the average low is in the thirties. Cold, cold, go away. Stay warm. Have a great week.
