Welcome to The Kid’s Korner.

I decided to do this feature as I have so many great children’s books to share. From picture books, to books for beginning readers, to middle graders, I have plenty of fun ones.

Today I’m sharing another fun book in the If You Were Me And Lived In…  series by Carole P. Roman.

Genre: Education / Adventure / Historical / Children’s Book

Age Level: 10 – 14

 My Review

I’ve read several books in Carole’s series and enjoyed them very much. I’d say this is my favorite so far.

I’ve always had a fascination with the Mayan society. What you’ll read here is fascinating stuff. How did they live? What was their society like? How did they construct their pyramids? So many more questions and so many more answers abound.

Among their many contributions is the concept or zero. Of something being nothing. They mapped the skies with telescopes. They even performed brain surgery. This is just of few of their contributions. A funny things is, despite all of this, they never discovered the use of the wheel. I thought that was so odd. All that knowledge and they missed the wheel. Now I wonder how did they build their cities and pyramids.

Learn about famous Mayans and more with the wonderful glossary provided at the back of the book. I found it handy and fun to be able to correctly pronounce words and get a better grasp of what they meant. I was thrilled by the wealth of information gleaned from these pages.

Welcome to Carole’s Mayan Empire. Read about many amazing things and let your eyes wander over the colorful illustrations. Have fun and learn.

Survival of the Fritters (A Deputy Donut Mystery)
by Ginger Bolton

Survival of the Fritters (A Deputy Donut Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Kensington (January 30, 2018)
Paperback: 256 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1496711878
E-Book ASIN: B071HKMK38

Emily Westhill runs the best donut shop in Fallingbrook, Wisconsin, alongside her retired police chief father-in-law and her tabby Deputy Donut. But after murder claims a favorite customer, Emily can’t rely on a sidekick to solve the crime—or stay alive.

If Emily has learned anything from her past as a 911 operator, it’s to stay calm during stressful situations. But that’s a tall order when one of her regulars, Georgia Treetor, goes missing. Georgia never skips morning cappuccinos with her knitting circle. Her pals fear the worst—especially Lois, a close friend who recently moved to town. As evening creeps in, Emily and the ladies search for Georgia at home. And they find her—murdered among a scattering of stale donuts . . .

Disturbingly, Georgia’s demise coincides with the five-year anniversary of her son’s murder, a case Emily’s late detective husband failed to solve before his own sudden death. With Lois hiding secrets and an innocent man’s life at stake, Emily’s forced to revisit painful memories on her quest for answers. Though someone’s alibi is full of holes, only a sprinkling of clues have been left behind. And if Emily can’t trace them back to a killer in time, her donut shop will end up permanently closed for business . . .

Ginger Bolton writes the Deputy Donut mystery series–cops, crime, coffee, donuts and one curious cat. When Ginger isn’t writing or reading, she’s crocheting, knitting, sewing, walking her two rescue dogs and generally causing trouble. She’s also fond of donuts, coffee, and cafes were folks gather to enjoy those tasty treats and one another’s company.

An Italian Kitchen Mystery

by Rosie Genova

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Cozy Mystery

 My teaser from page 65 in the paperback.

 “Your grandmother wants you to figure out who killed Parisi.”

I plopped down in a nearby chair and shook my head. “Are there no secrets in this godforsaken town? Have you been in touch with my brother? And who said anyone killed him?”

“No, yes, and everyone.”

Read on if you want to know more.

Synopsis

Hit whodunit writer Victoria Rienzi is getting back to her roots by working at her family’s Italian restaurant. But now in between plating pasta and pouring vino, she’ll have to find the secret ingredient in a murder….

When Victoria takes a break from penning her popular mystery series and moves back to the Jersey shore, she imagines sun, sand, and scents of fresh basil and simmering marinara sauce at the family restaurant, the Casa Lido. But her nonna’s recipes aren’t the only things getting stirred up in this Italian kitchen.

Their small town is up in arms over plans to film a new reality TV show, and when Victoria serves the show’s pushy producer his last meal, the Casa Lido staff finds itself embroiled in a murder investigation. Victoria wants to find the real killer, but there are as many suspects as tomatoes in her nonna’s garden. Now she’ll have to heat up her sleuthing skills quickly…before someone else gets a plateful of murder.

Welcome to my Monday Minis where I share shorter reviews of books I’ve read.

I figured it was time to return to some more great apocalyptic scenarios and this series by Nicholas Sansbury Smith was saved in my Amazon cart. I one clicked and got started.

Trackers

Trackers #1

by Nicholas Sansbury Smith

32495780

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre:  Apocalyptic / Post Apocalyptic

My Review

I loved Smith’s Hell Divers series. I already read the first two books and pre-ordered the third one. While waiting for its release I figured I’d check out what else he had to offer and the Trackers series immediately caught my attention.

I love a good apocalyptic story. The world falls apart. People do horrific and/or courageous things to survive. Good guys do bad, bad guys do good. It’s an epic struggle to carve out a place in the new world.

What scared me the most was how real this felt. This wasn’t about zombies or a flu epidemic decimating our country. It was EMPs taking out our power grid and crippling our way of life.

Smith does an amazing job of dropping you into hell. His characters are genuine. I quickly formed some strong connections with many of them. Including one heroic dog. Even though many made some mistakes, I hung on every word, hoping they’d make it through some bad situations as things imploded.

If you’re looking for some apocalyptic and post apocalyptic stories, look no further. This author brings it.

Halfway across the country, Senator Charlize Montgomery awakes to find the nation’s capital has gone dark. Forced to set off on foot, she treks across a city that has woken to a new world, and as the night progresses she learns the EMP attack was just the beginning.

After a couple of weeks of some of the worst winter weather I can remember here on the Gulf coast, it’s finally over. For now anyway.

I don’t do cold all that well, which really sucks as I have a job that requires working outside. I worked in temps that were in the 20s and I’m surprised I didn’t get frostbite. But the weather is finally getting back to normal with high 60s and low 70s for at least the next week!

I’m taking the day off from blogging to get outside and smell the roses! Here’s a little something to brighten your day.

Look For Her

  by Emily Winslow

35008762

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Mystery / Psychological Thriller

My 56 from the paperback.

Sometimes I feel like I can’t breathe. I don’t actually think I’ll stop breathing; I know that would be stupid; but I feel like I might. Annalise was smothered. Did you know that? I didn’t want to know that, but it was in all of the articles.

~~~~~
Read on if you want to know more.
Synopsis
Everyone loves a beautiful missing girl… a gripping psychological thriller that delves into the grief, jealousy, and unresolved mystery surrounding a cold case kidnapping, in the vein of Gilly MacMillan and Mary Kubica.
Just outside of Cambridge, Lilling seems like an unassuming idyllic English village, but it’s home to a dark history. In 1976, a teenage girl named Annalise Wood disappeared while riding her bike home from school. Though her body was later discovered in a shallow grave, the culprit was never found. Decades later, Annalise maintains a perverse kind of celebrity in the small town, and is still the focus of grief, speculation, and for one young woman, a disturbing, escalating jealousy.
When DNA linked to the Annalise murder unexpectedly surfaces, cold case investigator Morris Keene realizes he may now have the chance of his career. Morris and his former partner, Chloe Frohmann, hope to finally solve this perplexing mystery, and bring closure to a traumatized community. But the new evidence that should be the simple solution instead undoes the case’s only certainty: the buried body that had long ago been confidently identified as Annalise may be someone else entirely, and instead of answers, the investigators face only new puzzles.
Whose body was unearthed all those years ago, and what happened to the real Annalise? Could she have had a secret child? Is someone interfering with the investigation? And is there a link to a present-day drowning with eerie connections? With piercing insight and fascinating twists, Emily Winslow explores the dark side of sensationalized crime in this haunting psychological thriller.
Frank J. Edler
My mother was an alien and my father was a lamp post. I was fed a steady dose of soap bars as a child as punishment for my foul mouth and incessant pranks. Little did anyone know the soap only made me stronger, faster, more agile. My brain filled with bubbles that were 99.9% pure. It was an amazing time. I left the city and moved out to the country where I heard tell there is an amazing banana bread store. I never found it, but I did find love. I loved that tuna sandwich like no other and we were married on the Fourth of July, just like Tom Cruise in that one movie about said date. It was a magical time but alas was not meant to be. I ate it. I tried to move
on, writing books and sharing them with the local townsfolk. They would tell me to shut up and make sure I flushed before I left. Never once did I wash my hands like the signs demanded. So here I am, dirty
handed and telling my tales. Wanna hear one?
Tom Clark is a writer, and a veteran internet journalist and podcast producer. His work has been seen in websites such as This is Infamous and Rue Morgue, among other freelance outlets. His 2003 novel, The Rising, is often credited (along with Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comic and Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later film) with inspiring pop culture’s current interest in zombies. Keene’s novels have been translated into German, Spanish, Polish, Italian, French, Taiwanese, and many more. In addition to his own original work, Keene has written for media properties such as Doctor Who, The X-Files, Hellboy, Masters of the Universe, and Superman.Several of Keene’s novels have been developed for film, including Ghoul, The Ties That Bind, and Fast Zombies Suck. My Review
This is a set of five books teaching children about measuring, recognizing shapes, counting money, and learning to tell time, with the fifth book being an advanced book about time. Each page has a question and when you turn the page the answer is provided. And the pages are filled with brightly colored illustrations to add to the fun while learning.
I was surprised by how many questions I got wrong. Especially with measuring. My son, who is now grown, also had trouble with some of the questions. Do you know how many feet are in a mile? How about how many sides does a pentagon have? We went through all five books, having a good time and laughing at some of the fun pictures. If we had this much fun, imagine how much fun your little ones will have.
Parents and teachers will find these to be handy educational tools and the young ones will have so much fun they’ll forget they’re learning.
And Mitee Mite gives back. Each time a book is sold, one is given away and donations are made to teachers and children in need from book sale proceeds.
Description
Building on a desire to teach children about time, shapes, measurements, and money, author David John created THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE series. In the same way that many of us learned our ABCs, the book and app (available on Google Play and iTunes) collection helps young readers learn how many seconds are in a minute, the number of sides different shapes contain, and more, using a catchy tune that captures their attention and motivates learning.
Focusing on children from age 3 to 11 years old, THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE book and app series offers its readers a dynamic female superhero, Mitee Mite, as their guide through the often tricky terrain involved with mastering time, shapes, measurements, and money. In her matching red cape and boots, Mitee Mite, accompanied by her alarm clock sidekick, Terry the Ticker, activates her superpowers by using her manners, respecting others, and accurately answering questions in the games she encounters during her adventures.
The five books in THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE book and app series include The Time Frame Game and The Time Frame Game Advanced, which break down seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, and years to teach readers the fundamentals of time. The Measuring Game explores the components of feet, yards, and miles, as well as cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. Mitee Mite teaches kids about currency in The Money Game and dives into a colorful world of triangles, squares, hexagons, and more in The Shape Game. The companion song for this series (available at www.miteemite.com) helps kinds absorb the skills in an enjoyable and interactive way.
The idea for THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE book and app series came about when David was faced with a dire challenge. “One day as I was babysitting my friends’ children, and not having any idea what to do, I made up fun games to help them learn,” David revealed. The goal of the series is to expose children to a variety of lessons in a manner that is fun, relatable, and memorable. David says, “Mitee Mite was created to help give children a head start on the basics of time, measurements, shapes, and money.”
David’s daughter, whom he calls his “Little Mite,” is the inspiration for the main character and the themes of the series. David’s desire to teach his daughter the basic skills featured in THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE book and app series has expanded into the goal of sharing these lessons with other children through his “You Buy, They Read” program. “We plan to give away one book for every one bought to kids in need.” In addition, David will donate $1 for every $2 of the gross sales of apps to teachers “who are going into their own pockets to buy supplies.”
My Teaser for this week is from
by Lucy Burdette
Genre: Cozy Mystery
 My teaser from page 38 in the paperback.
 The sun was dropping low on the horizon, and the waves had picked up just enough to set the boat gently rocking. I’d have given Evinrude, my first born, to stay home and sip a glass of wine on the deck of our houseboat. Alone.
The cat trotted past me tail hoisted high, looking outraged, as though he understood exactly what I was thinking.
“Not really,” I told him. “Just kidding. I wouldn’t trade you for anything.”
Synopsis
Hayley Snow, the food critic for Key Zest magazine, has her plate heaped high with restaurant reviews, doughnut and sticky bun tastings, and an article on the Hemingway cats. But this week she’s also in charge of her best friend’s wedding. And then someone adds a side of murder…
For better or worse, Hayley has agreed to bake over 200 cupcakes for her friend Connie’s wedding while still meeting her writing deadlines. The last thing she needs is family drama. But her parents come barreling down on the island like a category 3 hurricane and on their first night in town her stepbrother, Roby, disappears into the spring break party scene in Key West.
When Hayley hears that two teenagers have stolen a jet ski, she sets aside her oven mitts and goes in search of Rory. She finds him, barely conscious, but his female companion isn’t so lucky. Now Hayley has to let the cupcakes cool and assemble the sprinkles of clues to clear her stepbrother’s name—before someone else gets iced.
