 My  Review

I had high hopes going into this. The synopsis sounded creepy. And while I did get plenty of that, I also got some bizarre scenes. It was hard, at first, to see where the author was going with his story. Once I figured that out, kind of, I kept thinking this would work so much better as a movie. The plot was out there and hard to follow by reading. I enjoyed some parts, especially the twist at the end. Other parts, not so much. I was left wishing I’d gotten more of what I thought this was going to be about. If you like books that take you into the strange unknown and make you think, this might be a good one for you.

Synopsis

You don’t read the book. It reads you.

Rumors of a deadly book have been floating around the dark corners of the deep web. A disturbing tale about a mysterious figure who preys on those who read the book and subjects them to a world of personalized terror. Jesse Wheeler–former guitarist of the heavy metal group The Rising Dead–was quick to discount the ominous folklore associated with the book. It takes more than some urban legend to frighten him. Hell, reality is scary enough. Seven years ago his greatest responsibility was the nightly guitar solo. Then one night when Jesse was blackout drunk, he accidentally injured his son, leaving him permanently disabled. Dreams of being a rock star died when he destroyed his son’s future. Now he cuts radio jingles and fights to stay clean. But Jesse is wrong.

The legend is real–and tonight he will become the protagonist in an elaborate scheme specifically tailored to prey on his fears and resurrect the ghosts from his past. Jesse is not the only one in danger, however.

By reading the book, you have volunteered to participate in the author’s deadly game, with every page drawing you closer to your own personalized nightmare.

The real horror doesn’t begin until you reach the end. That’s when the evil comes for you.

  1. “The strange unknown,” “make you think,” yep, that sounds like something I’d enjoy. Thanks for reviewing this one!

  2. Beware Of The Reader says:

Damn Laura the title was so promising!

    • fuonlyknew says:

As was the synopsis. I wanted to love it but I just couldn’t. It would start to pull me in and then I’d struggle to grasp what the author was telling. I think it will have a certain niche that enjoys it more than I did.

  3. I’d probably still give this a try. I like things that are really weird and “out there” so I might like this one.

  4. Tammy says:

This does sound bizarre! Not sure I’ll read it, but the format sounds unique😁

  5. I never do well with bizarre or weird! Probably not for me then!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I can honestly say, not one I’d recommend for you:) I think it will find a niche with some readers, just didn’t with me.

  6. tonyalee says:

Oh, this sounds super creep and good! I like weird, too. LOL

  7. I see this book everywhere and was starting to regret not requesting it myself but now I’m glad I waited. I don’t know if I’m in the mood for a bizarro-type read atm.

  8. Sometimes I too find books that are quite what I expected. Glad to see from your review you enjoyed it anyway.

  9. Wow, I’m not sure what to think of this book now. And wow, didn’t you just haul this? If so, you must have read it fast! I have an arc so I guess I’ll just have to find out for myself.

    • fuonlyknew says:

You might enjoy this one more than I did. I was so excited to get my copy and dove right in. It just wasn’t what I thought it would be about and difficult for me to “see” in some parts. The quality of writing was good, just guess it wasn’t my cuppa:)

  10. Bummer, the premise sounds good and you may be right..this would be better on the big screen.

  11. ericarobyn says:

Ah, I’ve read a few books that would have been better as a movie. Such a bummer when the book doesn’t do the idea justice! Great review!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I wish I could have loved it. I will try something else by this author. I wasn’t crazy about this story but maybe another of his will do the trick.

  13. Lilyn G says:

I participated in some of the build up for this book. Was pretty fun to watch everyone get hyped about it, but wasn’t a read I was particularly interested in myself.

  14. StackingMy BookShelves says:

Sorry this wasn’t better for you. I hate when you have a hard time following along and think one thing and it’s another. It seems like more scattered thoughts then a book. I hope the next one you read is better.

    • fuonlyknew says:

It was just hard to follow. I had to stop, go back, and reread some parts to fully grasp it. It wasn’t the quality of the writing. That was solid. It was the plot that was hard to follow. Very strange. LOL
