Genre: Post Apocalyptic / YA

Synopsis

Regret was for people with nothing to defend, people who had no water.

Lynn knows every threat to her pond: drought, a snowless winter, coyotes, and, most importantly, people looking for a drink. She makes sure anyone who comes near the pond leaves thirsty, or doesn’t leave at all.

Confident in her own abilities, Lynn has no use for the world beyond the nearby fields and forest. Having a life means dedicating it to survival, and the constant work of gathering wood and water. Having a pond requires the fortitude to protect it, something Mother taught her well during their quiet hours on the rooftop, rifles in hand.

But wisps of smoke on the horizon mean one thing: strangers. The mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won’t stop until they get it….

With evocative, spare language and incredible drama, danger, and romance, debut author Mindy McGinnis depicts one girl’s journey in a barren world not so different than our own.

I’ve had this on my shelf since September of 2013. The synopsis sounds thrilling and the cover art is gorgeous. Have you read it?

  1. I need to do this! I’m going to look into it more now 😬

I hope you join in. I would love to see the meme grow. It’s a fun way to clear old books off the shelf, meet new people and find new books!

  2. Tammy says:

I read this but honestly didn’t like it very much. I think it might have been her debut, and I know she’s written a lot more books since then, so hopefully she’s grown as an author.

  3. This one has been on my TBR for years. Haven’t gotten around to reading it yet, but I really like the premise.

  4. I’ve heard good things about this author but have never picked this up.

  5. Love that cover. I’m thinking of doing the Backlog too.

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while and since I no longer do my Thursday Theatre meme I now have room for it.

  6. bookwormbrandee says:

I’ve had this one on my tbr shelf since it released, Sherry, and I’ve yet to read it. Some day, right? 🙂

  7. I didn’t recognize the title but as soon as I saw the cover I thought “I want to read that one!” so I have it on my TBR somewhere but not actually on a physical shelf. I hope you read it soon and love it!

  8. Beware Of The Reader says:

    Really interesting one!

  9. This sounds like an intriguing read, I’d definitely be tempted to move it to the top of my TBR if I owned a copy. I hope you enjoy it when you do read it. 🙂

  10. Sophia Rose says:

This one caught my eye when it came out and I liked what the reviews I read on it said, but I never got to it. Hope you enjoy it.

  11. Carole says:

This does sound really good and I have to agree that the cover is great. I hope you like this one when you did get the chance to read it.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I made sure to add this to my backlog list. I plan to review one book I’ve had a long time and one older ARC each week.

  12. Yvonne says:

This is a great meme and it looks like a great book too.

  13. kozbisa says:

McGinnis seems to either be your cup of tea or not, though, I remember hearing really good things about this, and even saw it discussed back in 2015 on a panel.

  14. I always liked the cover to this one but I don’t really read YA post apocalyptic books now. I tend to read the adult apocalypse as it is happening kind of book!

  15. I think it sounds scary. YA is not my fav, but I like dystopian. I hope you enjoy!

  16. I love post apocalyptic and dystopian stories. I hope you enjoy when you get around to it.

The mixed ratings I spotted have me even more curious to read this. Hoping to start it next weekend.
