Welcome to my Monday Minis where I share shorter reviews of books I’ve read.

It’s a new year and it was an easy pick on which book would be my first review for 2018. It’s actually two books from the Hell Divers Series by Nicholas Sansbury Smith.

~~~~~
Hell Divers #1
by Nicholas Sansbury Smith
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
Genre: Science Fiction / Post Apocalyptic
My Review
World War III happened a long time ago. The Earth is now scorched and uninhabitable. The remains of humanity reside is large air ships that are slowly falling apart. Hell Divers are the only hope left. They make dangerous dives to the planet to scour for anything that could be used to keep the ships afloat. It’s a dangerous job. From the moment they jump they have to worry about massive storms. If they make it to the surface without being fried by lightning, they have to worry about the mutant life forms that now call the planet theirs.
This had everything I could have hoped for. Real life characters, danger and action leaping off the pages, and some nasty mutant creatures. It’s all presented in strong writing. And I used my imagination and several movies to visualize the story.
While I try not too choose a favorite character so I can enjoy them all, one just wouldn’t stop popping into my head. X. Oh, X. How I do love thee!
About the ending. Say it isn’t so! I had to know what would happen next and rushed right over to grab the next book. While there, I went ahead and pre-ordered the third book. Let the fun continue.
Synopsis
More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search for a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to earth long ago. Enter the Hell Divers—men and women who risk their lives by diving to the surface to scavenge for parts that keep their homes in the air. When one of the two surviving airships is damaged in an electrical storm, a Hell Diver team is deployed to a hostile zone called Hades. But there’s something down there that’s far worse than the mutated creatures discovered on dives in the past—something that threatens the fragile future of humanity.
Hell Divers #2
Ghosts
by Nicholas Sansbury Smith
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
Genre: Science Fiction / Post Apocalyptic
My Review
After the ending for the first book, which nearly killed me, I was clapping my hands in stupid glee when I read the beginning for this second book. I got all silly, talking out loud to myself about how good this was going to be.
It’s many years later and there’s some new divers in town. They don’t have much of a life expectancy and recruits are always needed. When disaster strikes the sister ship and a risky rescue is attempted, no one could have foreseen what was to come. The conspiracies that would be revealed. The secrets kept. And…what horrors waited below, on the surface.
Man, I hope they make these books into movies. They are freakin fantastic. Action explodes off the pages. Creepy things scare the crap out of you. Suspense has you chewing your fingernails. And the character’s grab hold of you and won’t let go.
Is this book as good as the first one? Hell yes! And I’ve already pre-ordered the third one. Now waiting anxiously for it to be released. Stay tuned.
Enjoy the excerpt
The moon shone brightly above my head. I glared at it.
It reminded me of fighting, of using moonlight to snipe. Shooting targets in the dark with Cassidy, popping rounds downrange and smelling the fresh scent of hot brass and cold dirt. Good practice and good times.
“Got any gum?” Cassidy asked.
“Yeah. But it’ll cost you,” I replied.
“Seriously? You can’t let go of capitalism for even one second?”
There was amusement in her voice. I held the piece of gum between my fingers for a moment. She made a move for it, and I backed away.
“Predictable,” I said.
“Then show me how to bring a man down,” she replied.
“You already know how to do that. You’ve got a rifle.”
“I want to know how to do it without a rifle. With my bare hands.”
“That’s optimistic of you.”
She was strong—agility and speed packed into a slender body, all lean, tough muscle. She would have been a good cop, I guess. Of course, they said the same thing about me, and look what happened.
“I’ll teach you,” I agreed. “But first, the price for gum.”
Gum. It was stupid. Even gum was a precious commodity now. I was down to my last pack.
“All right. Name it,” she huffed, rolling her eyes.
A kiss. That was what I wanted. To pull her to me and hold her body against mine and feel, even for a moment, that I deserved to be loved by someone like her.
I hesitated for too long. She blinked, slowly, and I knew she could read my mind.
She always could.
“You can keep it,” she said, brushing off my solemn stare. “Whatever.”
I tossed the gum to her. She caught it, neatly. No hesitation. Pure reflex.
“Thanks, partner.”
She was relieved: I could see it in her face. She had been afraid I would try to kiss her. That wasn’t allowed. She knew it and I knew it, but the desire was there, and I wasn’t the only one who felt it. Not by a longshot. That was what scared her the most…and nobody knew her better than I did.
“Got your six,” I murmured.
Memories. They’re fatal. You can’t get away from them.
I can’t ever resist a zombie horror book. Got a good one to share with you today.
The Death Doll
by Brian P. White
32442883
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
Genre: Horror / Apocalypse / Zombies
 My Review
The Death Doll takes place two years after the zombie apocalypse went down. Now, bands of survivors struggle to survive the desolation.
One band is lead by Didi. In her previous life she was a porn star and looks the part. Statuesque and voluptuous, don’t let her looks deceive you. She’s a force to be reckoned with. Her mission. Provide for the community and keep everyone alive, at all costs. And the costs are high. The zombies aren’t the only thing they have to worry about. Other survivors want what they have. And the Death Doll stalks the unwitting.
I love Didi. She never shies away from danger. In fact, she steps right up to it. And her steadfast efforts to keep her band of survivors safe is incredible. Especially when there’s grumbling in the ranks and many aren’t so sure about their leader. And maybe they have reason to worry.
Right from the beginning you know Didi has secrets. The author peels them away slowly, surprising you in ways you never suspected. As the group learns her secrets, things go sideways and this is the part I loved the most. Group dynamics are fascinating. Put a bunch of people together, scare them, and you discover who steps up and who throws the monkey wrench in the works.
There’s plenty of action and intrigue to keep the story rolling in The Death Doll. And a lot of surprises await you. A fast read for me and one I’m glad I read.
Synopsis
Didi was once the darling of the porn industry, baring it all for the world on the silver screen. Then came the zombie apocalypse. Two years later, she’s killing every flesh-eating corpse in her path to protect a group of unlikely survivors in northwest Iowa. Unfortunately, she hides a terrifying secret that threatens every life she defends. For nothing left on Earth that creeps or crawls is as lethal as The Death Doll.
Dead Blue Sea
Erin Hayes
(The Berkano Vampire Collection)
Publication date: November 6th 2017
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Post-Apocalyptic
Point Break meets Buffy in post-apocalyptic Cape Town, South Africa.
They say that surfing used to be a way of life.
In Devil’s Bay, it’s the only way to survive.
My name is Carlyle. I’m a water witch who protects the fishermen of my village from the danger beneath the waves. My days are spent on my longboard saving everyone from the fins. My nights are spent dreaming of something more than my small village isolated from the outside contact by cliffs and jagged peaks.
Then a storm strikes out of the blue, and, well, I wipe out. When I wake up, I’m on the other side of the bay surrounded by vampires who want to see me dead. Major bummer.
Only Kopano, an outcast of the fangers, seems to take pity on me. You see, Kopano also spent his nights dreaming of something more, and he thinks I hold the key. The only catch? To find the truth, we’ll have to face the dead blue sea.
Enjoy this glimpse inside.
“There’s some sort of irony,” I grumble, “in being sensitive to sunlight but also having to be outside during the day. Every damn day.”
She shrugs. “Do you want me to go tell the sharks to stop being nocturnal and hunt during the day?”
I snicker. “Aw, could you? Because then the fishermen could do their thing at night. And we could all avoid the sun like good, self-respecting, UV-sensitive witches.”
She chuckles darkly. “Ag, if only! But this is what we signed up for.”
I flick some sea water her way, and she squeals in mock-shock. “I signed up for this?”
Her smile falters. “Well, your mother did. But you’re still out here.”
Not that I really have any choice in the matter. It’s what’s best for the village, and there’s no denying that. I’m the best remaining water witch—if I suddenly stopped, we all knew that fishermen would lose their lives, food would become scarce in my village, and my own sense of self-preservation would be to blame.
Stuck between a shark and a wet place, I guess.
Mechaniclism
by Lynn Lamb
27221999
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
Genre: Apocalyptic Horror
 My Review
This one caught my eye on Amazon and I decided to give the author a try.
What a strangAe and engaging spin to this book. You start with the 1600s and clockmaker Frederick Jori. His work is lauded and comes to the attention of Lord Godwine, who imprisons and tortures him in unimaginable ways to make the automatons he requested. Something Jori claims is an abomination.
Flash forward to present day and Ireland Barton, a smart, accomplished scientist who’s lived her entire life in a bubble because of an immune deficiency that could kill her. She’s sadly left on her own to cope when her father dies from a virus that’s spread across the globe, killing most of civilization.
As the two times blend together, Ireland races to solve the puzzle of the mechanical dolls before all perish.
Each character suffers their own kind of prison. What I liked most was how they weren’t broken. They struggled to accomplish what seemed impossible. And I was held rapt to see what each chapter revealed about their lives.
Well, this was different. At times so gory it made me cringe and at other times intriguing, I couldn’t stop reading it. Even when I felt confused, as the blurb says the times converge, I couldn’t see how that would matter, but I needed to see. The author showed me the way and I sure got an eye opener.
If you like horror, suspense, and a bit of the odd, you might enjoy this one. The writing is strong and, as the author shares each time line, you have no trouble telling when it is or who’s story you’re following. I’m happy I tried this author and will be looking at more of her books now.
Synopsis
The Past
In 1632, Lord August Godwine, an Austrian nobleman, commissions Swiss clockmaker Frederick Jori to create a miniature city of automatons to amuse himself and impress the aristocracy. When Jori refuses to commit offenses against God, he undergoes brutal, unimaginable torture until the once-pious craftsman surrenders to his fate. But what he hides in the innocuous-appearing automatons ignites a horrific apocalypse—one that will not be realized for 400 years.
The Present
In 21st century San Francisco, Ireland Barton is a brilliant, successful young scientist, but there is one drawback to her perfect life—she suffers from a rare immune disorder that keeps her confined in a plastic bubble. When a new virus is released on the world, she begins a heart-pounding race to find a cure to save what is left of humanity and battle malevolent forces housed in 17th century figurines.
An Uncertain Future
As two worlds—two time periods—collide, will Ireland unravel the mystery of the dolls before the clock winds down on humanity?
Mature Audience
Please be advised, as the genre states, this is horror fiction.
