How far would you go to fulfill your terrifying ancient vow?
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo meets Outlander in
this “hauntingly beautiful debut” (Julie McElwain, A Murder
in Time
). Take a plunge into this mind-blowing, genre-bending world of
historical fantasy, suspense, romance, and time travel.

.

If not for “The Ghost”—her FBI husband’s gruesome case—Siena Forte’s
life would have been perfect. But not when the D.C. serial killer is hunting
women like her, and when her husband is so unsettled by this case, he refuses
to discuss it. It’s a miracle her art career is thriving at all. And not only
her career.

When Siena lands a medieval mural commission at the National Gallery of Art,
she discovers a bizarre knack for astral projecting to her past life. In a
lucky strike, her visions of love and prominence in medieval Ireland are just
the creative inspiration she seeks.

What Siena doesn’t know is her vivid depiction of the past exposes her to
someone she has met before—the serial killer, reborn in this century just like
her. But when a vicious attack from the past reverberates into the present,
Siena’s life unravels in a chilling parallel.

Silenced and alone, she discovers the true reason for her visions. They’re not
the creative inspiration they seemed, but a harbinger of her centuries-old
revenge vow, and the killer cannot be stopped until she fulfills it. But there
is another person from the past with unfinished business—her husband. And
another unwelcome déjà vu—their crumbling marriage, once again
precipitated by the serial killer’s crime.

His words were a blast that made something inside me snap.
Why couldn’t I unlock my  eyes from his? Unclench my knees despite an
unbearable compulsion to run? I dug my fingernails  into my sweaty palms to
break the paralysis, drove the graphite shards into my flesh.

.

“Do you ever wonder what becomes of your characters?” His
vacuous smile didn’t reach  his eyes. “What comes after your painstaking
freeze-frame? Your warrior—” He pointed his chin  at the mural. “He’s
cocky, but he doesn’t know what he’s riding into. Yet hours from now, he
could be lying in some field, stripped of his weapons, bleeding out into the
ground as the vultures  peck at his baby blues.” His eyes widened.
“Leaving his beautiful young widow all alone.”

.

His impossibly soft voice was a ringing blow in my ears. A
tremor braced my throat. I drew  a frantic breath against it.

.

“I’m sorry,” I squeezed out, “I’m not sure I follow.”

.

“I’m sure you do.” He chuckled. “But don’t look so stricken,
Siena Forte. It’s only a  painting, a fantasy. Nothing more.”

.

“Excuse me…” I edged past him, cold all over.

.

I rushed into the nearest restroom, tossed the broken
graphite into the trash can, and  locked myself in a stall. I hugged
myself. Tight. Tighter. Gasped for air, not drawing any. My vision  swam
at the edges. Flickering. Fading. My heart thudded, and breath came faster in
my chest,  choking me.

.

Fragments of his words whirred around me, and I grasped my
head to stop the awful  cacophony. But it wouldn’t stop. The image he drew
cut like a knife, piercing through something  soft and vulnerable inside.
Something I’d buried deep down and wished to keep that way. But  he’d
driven it to the surface and laid it out in the open, raw and exposed.

.

Someone entered the restroom, and I froze at the squeak of
the adjoining stall door. But  it was only a pair of black pumps through
the divider gap. Heartbeat in my ears, I dropped the  toilet lid and sat
down.

.

Breathe in. Breathe out. Repeat.

.

Worgen was a narcissistic egomaniac, pissed off at not
getting his way. Certainly, he could  neither read my mind nor know
anything about my visions. He was messing with me. Of course,  he was!
Pygmalion was a mythical sculptor, whose ivory creation came to life after he’d
fallen in  love with her. And here I was, a female artist, painting a man.
As for the widow, it wasn’t a big  leap to imagine a handsome warrior
leaving a young wife at home. Worgen didn’t have to know  about me to
understand this mental image would upset me.

.

I couldn’t tell how long I stayed in the restroom, but I
emerged more determined than  ever to continue with my project. I only
needed to go outside and get some fresh air first. But  Worgen was still
there, talking to a visitor, and the only way out was past him. I clenched my
jaw and went toward them.

As she shifted her weight, the metal walls started to reverberate and Sheagan stifled a gasp, willing the rumbling to cease. Her breathing became labored as the musty air stole the aroma of the sweet perfume wafting up from the suite below. She stilled her movements and did the only thing she could think of… nothing. Nothing but stare at the heap of blankets and wait.

Come on, bimbo, come up for air. I know he doesn’t last that long.

Her discomfort increased as the noise from their passion became more intense.

Ugh, that’s it, I’ve had it!

She mashed her cheek and upper body against the grate.

I just need a peek to confirm.

She pressed harder, ogling the bed. Finally, she caught a tiny glimpse.

Just a little further.

She pushed and heard a chirring sound, then a scraping. She froze in place, but the grate gave way with a creaking groan and crashed to the ground. Time stood still as Sheagan realized there was nothing between her and the floor except air.

ALTERATIONS by Stephanie Scott

Book Blurb:
If anyone saw the prom boards Amelia Blanco makes on her favorite fashion app, they’d think Ethan Laurenti was her boyfriend. They wouldn’t know that all the plans she’s made for them are just dreams, and that she’s the girl who watches him from the kitchen while her parents cook for his famous family.

When Amelia’s abuelita enrolls her in a month-long fashion internship in NYC, Amelia can’t imagine leaving Miami–and Ethan–for that long. As soon as she gets to New York, however, she finds a bigger world and new possibilities. She meets people her own age who can actually carry on a conversation about stitching and design. Her pin boards become less about prom with Ethan and more about creating her own style. By the time she returns to Miami, Amelia feels like she can accomplish anything, and surprises herself by agreeing to help Ethan’s awkward, Steve-Jobs-wannabe brother, Liam, create his own fashion app.

As Liam and Amelia get closer, Ethan realizes that this newly confident, stylish girl may be the one for him after all . . . even though he has a reality TV star girlfriend he conveniently keeps forgetting about. The “new and improved” Amelia soon finds herself in between two brothers, a whole lot of drama, and choice she never dreamed she’d have to make.

THE DISTANCE FROM A TO Z by Natalie Blitt

Book Blurb:

This full-length novel by debut author Natalie Blitt is a pitch-perfect blend of Stephanie Perkins and Miranda Kenneally that proves the age-old adage: opposites attract.

Seventeen-year-old Abby has only one goal for her summer: to make sure she is fluent in French—well, that, and to get as far away from baseball and her Cubs-obsessed family as possible. A summer of culture and language, with no sports in sight.

That turns out to be impossible, though, because her French partner is the exact kind of boy she was hoping to avoid. Eight weeks. 120 hours of class. 80 hours of conversation practice with someone who seems to wear baseball caps and jerseys every day.

But Zeke in French is a different person than Zeke in English. And Abby can’t help but fall for him, hard. As Abby begins to suspect that Zeke is hiding something, she has to decide if bridging the gap between who she is and who he is is worth the risk.

Her belief in “happily ever after” ended the day she discovered her husband was still married to a wife she knew nothing about. By living life on the road and traveling New Zealand as a luxury tour guide, Allison manages to outrun the pain of her past she can’t face.

To make matters worse, the Iowa farm that has been in his family for generations is facing foreclosure. Determined to save his parents from financial ruin, he’ll do whatever it takes to convince his wealthy great-uncle to invest in his next scheme, which means accompanying him to the bottom of the world to spend three weeks pretending to be a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan, even though he knows nothing about the stories. The one thing that stands between him and his goal is a know-it-all tour guide who can’t stand him and pegged him as a fake the moment he walked off the plane.

When Allison leads the group through the famous sites of the Tolkien movies, she and Jackson start to see each other differently, and as they keep getting thrown together on the tour, they find themselves drawn to each other. Neither expected to fall in love again, but can they find a way beyond their regrets to take a chance on the one thing they’re not looking for?

Excerpt
Cheery bells push at the fog of my sleep. I must still be dreaming. For seventeen years, no bells have chimed outside my window. It faces a cornfield.

With a slow roll to my side, I nuzzle my pillows and will myself to return to the dream world in which such music plays. Light dances across my eyelids and nudges me to wake, but it’s summer. I refuse to get up before Mom makes me. The chimes fade, and my hand searches the cotton covers for Shelby, my supersized puppy, who inhabits one side of my bed. Her lazy kisses usually help me fall right back to—

I bolt upright in bed, adrenaline pounding through my system.

A grin splits my face. The bells. I know why there are bells.

I’m in Mexico.

When she’s not writing, she’s learning to play video games with her husband (she’s horrible), taking hikes in beautiful parks with her pug Pascal, crocheting, and watching way too much TV.

Cassie O’Malley has spent her whole life trying to keep her head above water—literally and metaphorically. Welcome to my stop on the tour for Madman Across The Water by Caroline Angel.

Check out the chilling cover art. Take a close look at it. See it?

Now I’m going to share my review. Tell ya what I thought about this chilling story!
.
My Review
.

Yes, as the title says, there’s a madman across the water. But there’s something else, something in the woods. Something evil. It comes in the fog. It takes the children. They never return.

The thing in the woods has been around as long as the town folk can remember. But it’s never been this bad. Usually it’s a few people or children go missing. But this time is different. It’s leaving the woods, attacking people in their homes, at the hospital, and even at the police station. There’s nowhere you can hide.  Running away doesn’t work.

It’s simple.

It wants you and it will have you.

I love horror. Been reading it since I was young. Give me a good scary story and I’m not available for hours.

This is a good one. A creeping fog. An ancient evil, a monster, in the woods. What more could I ask for?

Well, it takes a lot to creep me out. And this author did a great job of it.

I wanted a mystery behind the monster. I got that. It started over a hundred years ago.

I wanted things to escalate quickly. They did. People are taken at an alarming rate. That thing is insatiable.

I wanted no characters off limits. Got that too.  Guess I should warn you here. The author doesn’t shy away from killing off her characters. So don’t get to attached.

I wanted a flawed hero. Got more than one of those. There’s the two brothers, their ancestors, their kids, some of the town folk.  Many of them stepped up to play the part. A lot of them didn’t make it to the end of the story.

And, last but not least, I wanted a truly horrific monster. Boy, did I get that.  The thing in the woods is terrifying. It goes wherever it wants. Playfully kills you, like tearing apart a rag doll. And if it lets you live, you’ll wish you were dead.

The authors description of how the thing looked was chillingly detailed. Take another look at the cover art. See that thing on the right? By the trees? That’s what’s in the woods. But by the time the author is finished describing it, you’ll see it up close, in all it’s hideous glory.

If you’re a horror fan.  If you like it in your face. You’ll love this one.

5 Stars

Madman Across the Water
By- Caroline Angel
Genre- Horror

For generations one family has been haunted by something… something that stalks. It sees and listens, it watches and follows. In the shadows and mist it waits, to take you, to hurt you, perhaps to kill you. And if it doesn’t kill you, you’ll wish it did.

A creepy, suspenseful saga of family, horror, and mystery, this is one story sure to leave you frightened of the woods at night, fog, and all things tall and slender.

My Tease for this week is from

Southern Heat

by David Burnsworth

My Tease is from page 88 and 91  in the hardcover.

“You guys have this all planned out, don’t you? It’s a good thing my uncle wants to be cremated because he’d turn over in his grave if I let any of that happen.”

***

Shelby tried to come in with me but I stopped him.  He looked at me like I’d just snatched a steak out of his mouth. “I’ll make it up to you boy.”

~~~
Synopsis
Gunshots echo down an antebellum Charleston alley. Brack Pelton, an ex-racecar driver and Afghanistan War veteran, witnesses the murder of his uncle, Reggie Sails. Darcy Wells, the pretty Palmetto Pulse reporter, investigates Reggie’s murder and targets Brack.
The sole heir of his uncle’s estate, Brack receives a rundown bar called the Pirate’s Cove, a rotting beach house, and one hundred acres of preserved and valuable wetland along the Ashley River. A member of Charleston’s wealthiest and oldest families offers Brack four million dollars for the land. All Brack wants is his uncle’s killer.
From the sandy beaches of Isle of Palms, through the nineteenth-century mansions lining the historic Battery, to the marshlands surrounding the county, Southern Heat is drenched in the humidity of the lowcountry.
I’m reviewing this for a tour in May and had to take a peek inside it.
Yancy’s having one of those days, weeks…. Starts out innocently enough and then goes to s!#t.
It all started with a simple phone call from a friend in need. Now Yancy’s in a world of hurt and it ain’t gonna be getting better any time soon..
“I’d been pumped full of tranquilizers,busted a hole in the back wall of The Full House, got shot in the ass, and had, eventually, passed out in a dog pee under a car. Right?”
“So, how’d I end up Saran-wrapped to a table in white-picker suburbia?”
Yancy Lazarus (AKA The Fixer) He drinks too much. Smokes too much. And gambles too much. Or so they say. He just likes to live large.
He can do magic, using the VIS – Latin word meaning force or energy. Yancy’s neat trick is he can manipulate energy, using things like water and fire.  But a big gun comes in handy too when he comes face to face with the Rakshasa,  their face kind of like a hyena, with a mouth full of shark teeth, beady eyes, over long arms and gray flesh. Nasty things.
He’s 65 and looks 45 due to the longevity the Vis gives him. The FBI has his mug on a Most Wanted poster for domestic terrorism and murder, among other things. Sure, he’s killed, but most were of the non-human type.
Ya gotta love Yancy. He’s a shit-kickin, blues lovin, rambler and gambler, playing piano for drinks, gambling to feed himself, and living out of the back of his precious El Camino. A true nomad and bad ass.
From the first paragraph
“The piano keys bobbed and danced under the pressure of my fingers. Music – low, slow, and soulful – drifted through the club, merging and twirling with wandering clouds of blue-gray smoke. So many places have no-smoking laws these days, it seems like there’s nowhere in the country where a guy can take a drag from a cigarette in peace. Everyone is so worries about their health, they make damn sure you stay healthy by proxy.”
to the last I had a rip snortin time and can’t wait to see what kind of Hell Yancy winds up in next.
Strange Magic is Author James A. Hunter’s debut novel. They say a writer gets better with each books he writes. If this is true, I can’t imagine what he has in store for this series.
5 Stars
A Tip from Yancy Lazarus
“I cannot tell you the number of fights that start and end in back aleys. Tip: if you find yourself in a bar and about to walk into a dark alley with a guy who would like to do you violence, don’t. Just don’t do it. Not ever.”
“Here’s another tip: sometimes, bad choices are the only ones available.”
Fun tags.
Synopsis
Yancy Lazarus is having a bad day: there’s a bullet lodged in his butt cheek, his face looks like the site of a demolition derby, and he’s been saran-wrapped to a banquet table. He never should have answered the phone. Stupid bleeding heart—helping others in his circles is a good way to get dead.
Just ask the gang members ripped to pieces by some kind of demonic nightmare in LA. As a favor to a friend, Yancy agrees to take a little looksee into the massacre and boom, he’s stuck in a turf war between two rival gangs, which both think he’s pinch-hitting for the other side. Oh, and there’s also a secretive ass-hat with some mean ol’ magical chops and a small army of hyena-faced, body- snatching baddies. It might be time to seriously reconsider some of his life choices.
Yancy is a bluesman, a rambler, a gambler, but not much more. Sure, he can do a little magic—maybe even more than just a little magic—but he knows enough to keep his head down and stay clear of freaky-deaky hoodoo like this business in LA. Somehow though, he’s been set up to take a real bad fall—the kind of very permanent fall that leaves a guy with a toe tag. Unless, of course, he can find out who is responsible for the gangland murders, make peace in the midst of the gang feud, and take out said magical ass-hat before he hexes Yancy into an early retirement. Easy right? Stupid. Bleeding. Heart.
Nobody’s Goddess by Amy McNulty
Coming April 21, 2015
M9B-cover-reveal-3D
In a village of masked men, each loves only one woman and must follow the commands of his “goddess” without question. A woman may reject the only man who will love her if she pleases, but she will be alone forever. And a man must stay masked until his goddess returns his love—and if she can’t or won’t, he remains masked forever.
Where the rest of her village celebrates this mystery that binds men and women together, seventeen year old Noll is just done with it. She’s lost all her childhood friends as they’ve paired off, but the worst blow was when her closest companion, Jurij, finds his goddess in Noll’s own sister. Desperate to find a way to break this ancient spell, Noll instead discovers why no man has ever loved her: she is in fact the goddess of the mysterious lord of the village, a Byronic man who refuses to let Noll have her right as a woman to spurn him and who has the power to fight the curse. Thus begins a dangerous game between the two: the choice of woman versus the magic of man. And the stakes are no less than freedom and happiness, life and death—and neither Noll nor the veiled man is willing to lose.
Coming May 19, 2015
The-Artisans-cover
They say death can be beautiful. But after the death of her mother, seventeen-year-old Raven Weathersby gives up her dream of becoming a fashion designer, barely surviving life in the South Carolina lowlands.
To make ends meet, Raven works after school as a seamstress creating stunning works of fashion that often rival the great names of the day.
Instead of making things easier on the high school senior, her stepdad’s drinking leads to a run in with the highly reclusive heir to the Maddox family fortune, Gideon Maddox.
But Raven’s stepdad’s drying out and in no condition to attend the meeting with Maddox. So Raven volunteers to take his place and offers to repay the debt in order to keep the only father she’s ever known out of jail, or worse.
Gideon Maddox agrees, outlining an outrageous demand: Raven must live in his home for a year while she designs for Maddox Industries’ clothing line, signing over her creative rights.
Her handsome young captor is arrogant and infuriating to the nth degree, and Raven can’t imagine working for him, let alone sharing the same space for more than five minutes.
But nothing is ever as it seems. Is Gideon Maddox the monster the world believes him to be? And can he stand to let the young seamstress see him as he really is?
Born in Ohio, I lived next to my grandfather’s horse farm until the fourth grade. Summers were about riding, fishing and make-believe, while winter brought sledding and ice-skating on frozen ponds. Most of life was magical, but not all.
I struggled with multiple learning disabilities, did not excel in school. I spent much of my time looking out windows and daydreaming. In the fourth grade (with the help of one very nice teacher) I fought dyslexia for my right to read, like a prince fights a dragon in order to free the princess locked in a tower, and I won.
Afterwards, I read like a fiend. I invented stories where I could be the princess… or a gifted heroine from another world who kicked bad guy butt to win the heart of a charismatic hero. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? Later, I moved to Florida where I continued to fantasize about superpowers and monsters, fabricating stories (my mother called it lying) and sharing them with my friends.
Then I thought I’d write one down…
Hooked, I’ve been writing ever since. I write historical, contemporary, urban fantasy, adventure, and young adult romances. I love strong heroines, sweeping tales of mystery and epic adventure… which must include a really hot guy. My writing is proof you can work hard to overcome any obstacle. Don’t give up. I say, if you write, write on!
Vessel-Cover
The sun exploded on April 18, 2112. It exploded in a Class X solar storm the likes of which humankind had never seen.
They had nineteen minutes.
Nineteen minutes until the geomagnetic wave washed over the Earth, frying every electrical device created by humans, blacking out entire continents, every satellite in their sky.
Nineteen minutes to say goodbye to the world they knew, forever, and to prepare for a new Earth, a new Sun.
Generations after solar storms have destroyed nearly all human technology on Earth and humans have reverted to a middle ages like existence, all knowledge of the remaining technology is kept hidden by a privileged few called the Reticents and books are burned as heresy.
Alana, a disfigured slave girl, and Recks, a traveling minstrel and sometimes-thief, join forces to bring knowledge and books back to the human race. But when Alana is chosen against her will to be the Vessel, the living repository for all human knowledge, she must find the strength to be what the world needs.
Lisa, like most writers, began scribbling silly notes, stories, and poems at a very young age. Born in North Carolina, the South proved fertile ground to her imagination with its beautiful white sand beaches and red earth. In fifth grade, she wrote, directed and starred in a play “The Queen of the Nile” at school, despite the fact that she is decidedly un-Egyptian looking. Perhaps that’s why she went on to become a real life archaeologist? Unexpectedly transplanted to Idaho as a teenager, Lisa learned to love the desert and the wide open skies out West. This is where her interest in cultures, both ancient and living, really took root, and she became a Great Basin archaeologist. However, the itch to write never did leave for long. Her first books became the middle grade fantasy trilogy, The Storyteller Series. Her first traditionally published work, Hush Puppy, is coming soon from Featherweight Press.
