Welcome to My Monday Minis.

This is where I review very short stories and flash fiction.

For today I’ll be telling you about Halo of the Madonna

A short prequel to the Halo Series

by Dina Rae

Halo of the Madonna

goodreads-badge-add-plus

Halo of the Madonna is a really short prequel to the Halo Series.

A world of fallen angels, demons, and Nephilim.

You learn what really happened to Lydia, Kim and Joanna’s mother.

You’ll see just how despicable Armaros is and why Lydia broke from the families church of Fallen

Now Armaros, calling himself Andel Talistokov, is back.

Lydia hears his voice and learns he’s set up shop in his headquarters at The Evil Empire, his advertising chain.

Perfect place to hide what he is, a fallen angel, and gather evil souls.

Lydia wonders if he knows where she is, knows what she stole from him?

She sets up safe guards, but who knows if he is coming after what is his, or when he’ll come.

Lydia can’t let him get the box and rushes to find a safe hiding place, while ensuring her daughters will be able to get to it.

Time is running out and she needs to come forward and tell her daughters everything, what they are, so they can prepare for what is sure to come.

I’ve been hoping to read about Lydia, to learn some of her story.

While this is really short and ends quite abruptly, it gives me answers to questions I had nagging me after I finished the first two books in this series.

Lydia was so brave, running away from the Fallen and trying to protect her children, while knowing she would be forever running and hiding.

She knew the day would come, the day when she would have to tell her children what they are and where they come from.

She just hopes she’s not too late.

Even though I knew what was going to happen, I still was so afraid for Lydia and was immersed from beginning to end.

4 stars

I’ve also read and reviewed the first two books in this series.

He meets Jake and hires him for odd household jobs. As their relationship progresses, Lucien invites the boy into the world of Voodoo. Jake LaRue lives in foster care with his abusive uncle. The Voodoo lessons give him a sense of power within an otherwise helpless situation. Despite his loner status, he instantly connects with Henry, his only friend in high school. Henry Novak has Asperger’s Syndrome. He fixates on historical events, most recently the 2010 Haitian earthquake. Like Jake, he becomes passionate about the dark side of Voodoo. They learn how to cast spells on those they hate and lust, leading up to dire consequences. Months after the Haitian earthquake, Henry convinces his family to volunteer for the island’s reconstruction. Their mission turns into a nightmare when he mysteriously walks off of the campsite. Bad Juju is a balance of horror, romance, and literary fiction intended for adults and mature teens. The plot uses research involving the Voodoo religion.

Superstition Mountain Trilogy

Stacey Thompson

Description

The story leans on the Apache creation story, taking the idea of a Monster Slayer and bringing it to a western setting. The main character, Ami, is one of the best in the small village she lives in. The Shaman takes a special interest in her and she doesn’t know why at first. She also gives her a stone that ties into the Apache legend. A love develops between the man who trained her, Wesley and herself.

We are also introduced to Maggie, a former Monster Slayer who helps with finding Price and tries to help them kill Price. She has her own issues with the past that are actually addressed shortly in the novella. She’s the main character in the short story which tells us a lot more about why she is the way she is. This story, Bloody Christmas is available to read on my blog.

Price is the first Vampire Demon to be in the world. He was the original Monster the first Monster Slayer thought they killed. Where gold bullets from the sacred mines of Superstition Mountain will kill most Demons, they won’t kill him. The only thing that can is the line of the original Monster Slayer, Ami. Instead of killing Ami, he takes an unusual interest in her.

In the second novella, Ami decides to leave because she doesn’t want to burden Wesley with what she is. Of corse Wesley tracks her down because he loves her and doesn’t realize she isn’t totally human anymore. He tracks her to a town where there has been a killing of a Vampire by what looks like another Vampire. He starts to put things together, but still wants to believe she isn’t something he needs to kill.

While Wesley is tracking Ami, Maggie is on her own mission to help. She meets up with an old friend from her Monster Slayer days to help kill the evil that is Price. Her subplot plays out with reuniting with her old love, Cody, but he has complications as well. Wesley doesn’t like Cody and there is back and forth a few times with these characters.

In the third novella, Wesley has to deal with the fact Ami is a Vampire and learn if he can live with it or if he must do what he’s trained to do.

Cody learns to deal with the part of him that is different and Maggie accepts him for it. They live a life that brings happiness to themselves as well as rebuilding the Order that was destroyed by Price.

In the last chapter, we learn what evil can really do to people and who can carry that burden. It’s an ending that leaves you wondering. 😉

 Superstition MountainBlood and Dust Excerpt.

Set Up: Wesley, Maggie, Cody and John are working on getting rid of a group of Vampires that are killing a whole town. What they find is not what they expect.

Wesley

“I know you aren’t fond of Cody. Whatever happened in that house needs to stay there for now,” she said, holding her gaze to him.

“There’s something not right about the guy.” Wesley glanced back to Cody who was watching the pair as though he was able to know what was being said.

“I know, but that’s his issue right now.” She stopped and sighed. “Look, I’ve known him for a long time. He’s a good guy.”

“Good guy or not, he’s still got something going on.” He pulled the horse and went back to the group. Maggie sighed and followed him.

Wesley kept his mouth shut the rest of the time. He watched Cody but kept his distance. He didn’t know what was going on with this guy, but he also didn’t want to go after Price alone. This small group was all that stood between darkness. They kept going until the sun started to go down.

“There’s a town up ahead,” Cody said, coming up beside Maggie. Wesley could hear them talking, but didn’t turn to look at them. “I don’t like it.”

“Why?” Maggie was clearly starting to get frustrated.

“I’m not sure.”

“We have to stop. We’re running low on supplies, and it would be nice to sleep in a bed for a change.” Maggie glanced at everyone and then the town. She didn’t give anyone time to argue and headed towards it. Wesley sighed and followed with the other guys behind them.

They didn’t have to ride too long before they were at the edge of the town. It was quite, but the sun was setting and the town had little beyond candles burning in the windows. There were a few lanterns on in the boarding house and some of the smaller merchants. Wesley glanced around, looking for some sign of life, but there wasn’t anything that told him anyone lived in this place.

“Where is everyone?” Cody said what everyone was thinking.

“They’re probably just staying in. With all the attacks in the area, it would be the smart thing to do,” Maggie said, trying to stay positive.

“You know what a silent town means, Maggie.” Cody was direct, and it made Wesley glance between the two.

“Trouble.” Wesley didn’t know what else to say. It was the sign every Slayer looked for. Usually the people in the town were hiding or worse.

They stopped at one of the merchants, and Wesley jumped off his horse to go in with Maggie right behind him. They opened the door and stepped inside. One older man was standing behind the counter furiously cleaning it. He glanced up when the doorbell rang from the door opening.

Wesley smiled and walked towards the counter. The old man stopped and kept his eyes on the pair.

“I don’t want any trouble,” the old man sputtered out. Wesley watched him, confused by his fear.

“We aren’t here to hurt you. What’s going on around here? Where is everyone?” He didn’t take his eyes off of the old man in case he decided to do something. The man took a breath and then stepped back from the counter.

“Those people… they’re taking people and killing them.” He managed to get it out, but his eyes kept darting between Wesley and Maggie. “They’re some kind of Demon with glowing eyes.” He held his fingers up to his eyes.

“Where are these Demons?” Maggie said not taking a step towards them. She was clearly keeping her distance in order to keep him from reacting in a way that wasn’t good for any of them.

“In the Docs house, just on the edge of town.” The old man put his face in his hands. “What can we do? They’re going to kill us all.”

“You should find a place in the back or somewhere you can hide. Don’t come out until the sun comes up.” Maggie glanced at Wesley, and he started for the door.

“Let’s go to work,” he said, pushing the door open and glancing at Cody and John. “There are some Vampires at the Docs. We need to clear them out before we do anything else.” No one argued with him, and they were at the doctor’s house in a few minutes. The first thing Wesley noticed was the screaming and pleading from a younger girl. He jumped off the horse and went straight for the door.

“Wait, you don’t know how many are in there,” Maggie yelled behind him. All he could hear was the girl screaming for help. He kicked the door open and rushed in.

The room was covered in fresh blood, and there were a lot of dead bodies littering the floor. Wesley almost slipped on the wet blood on the floor. He grabbed onto the back of the couch and snapped his head up in time to see the kick hit him in the gut. He doubled over and felt the woman push him down on the ground. Before he could react she was on top of him. That’s when he saw something he wished he’d never seen.

Ami was a Vampire and going to kill him.

Book Two in the Halo Trinity

Halo of the Nephilim

goodreads-badge-add-plus

Releasing May 1st!

As soon as buy links are available, I’ll add them in.

So lets talk Nephilim.

It’s been just under a year since the Easterhouse sisters went through hell. It seems like the worst is over and done and they can get on with their lives.

But then they discover Armaros isn’t dead, as everyone believed. He’s in Hell and he’s planning a comeback.

Armaros is in the deepest, hottest level of Hell. Level Nine, Pandemonium.

“The city’s architecture used chrome, mirrors, and other reflecting glass and metal, casting images of evil in all directions.”

gateway to hell photo: Gateway to Hell Image1.jpg

And Satan has handed him over to a few damned souls who can’t wait to exact their revenge.

I wondered how you could torture a Fallen One. Can you hurt something that can’t die? The author got very creative.

“The stitches firmly held his wings back, leaving him in human form, able to feel every nerve ending inside of his body, and every pulse of pain.”

The descriptions of Hell and its many levels is fascinating. Who would have thought there would be car dealerships there.

While Armaros suffers one torture after another, his mind is plotting, always plotting. His arrogance might have landed him back in Hell, but maybe it will get him out too. He plans on being the first to break out of Hell.

When Kim and Joanna learn of his plans, they bring family and allies together.

Armaros reaches out to his followers on Earth.

It looks like things are going to be plenty hot when everyone comes together at the gates of Hell.

gateway to hell photo: The gateway to hell 728ChileMtVillarica-1.jpg

Besides the descriptions of Hell and its many levels, my other favorite part of this story is Joanna. It was hinted in the first book that she may go through some changes. She sure does, some exciting ones.

Halo of the Nephilim reads even faster than Halo of the Damned. So much is going on from one end of the globe to the other and underneath our feet.

It all comes to a head in an exciting conclusion.

The ending caught me by surprise. I didn’t expect it to go down the way it did. But, I liked it. Now I can’t wait to see where Dina takes me in the final book.

5 Stars for Halo of the Nephilim. Gimme more!

But why do they seem to know more about her than she knows herself?

Can a fallen angel, his band of broken souls, and his nephilim children change the world?
Armaros the Cursed, Satan’s favorite of the Fallen, falls once again after breaking the rules.  Fearing an eternity of punishment, he desperately attempts to save himself by sending a bird to his island.  The SOS message is received by his beloved congregation.  They prepare the great Armaros’ kingdom for his return.  Can his loyal worshipers rescue him from the pit?
Halo of the Nephilim is the sequel to Halo of the Damned.  The story begins with Armaros’ arrest.  Reporters are duped into believing he was gunned down while awaiting trial.  Declared dead, his only known surviving daughter, Joanna Easterhouse, proves her relation and inherits everything.  She catapults her career from an entry-level advertising assistant to the head of Armaros’ advertising empire.  Life couldn’t be better: a windfall inheritance, real power within a major industry, a loving relationship with a former demon, and a baby on the way.  She should be on top of the world, but knows everything good must come to an end.
Joanna’s sister, Kim Easterhouse, becomes Kim Slattery after marrying Sean, her dead mother’s probate lawyer.  Joanna generously includes them as key players in her advertising chain.  They, too, have much to smile about, but a string of events leads them back to old family secrets.
Wickedness looms over the Easterhouse family once more, forcing them into an unlikely showdown filled with page-turning excitement.  Like Halo of the Damned, Halo of the Nephilim is filled with conspiracy and angel lore taken directly from scripture and other ancient writings.  Nephilim meander the earth in confusion, constantly questioning who they are and where they stand in terms of good and evil.  More mind control themes top off this tale of doom.  Dina Rae delivers the darkness in the most entertaining light.

 My Review

Armaros, or Andel as he likes to be called, has been around for a long time. If you asked him he’d tell you, “I was made at the very beginning, with all of God’s angels…. So to answer your question, I’m as old as old can be.”

Andel is one of the fallen. He was sent to Hell along with one-third of the rest of the angels, those who stood alongside Satan in a war to defy God. Which they lost.

fallen angels photo: FA9 Fallen-1.jpg

Now he’s got this huge advertising company, The Evil Empire, which he uses to trick and steal the souls of thousands. He sends these souls to his master, who adds them to his army of evil warriors.

Andel is despicable and so horrendous. He doesn’t have to eat his victims to obtain their souls. He does it because he enjoys it, revels in it.

This scene from the beginning shows his real colors behind the suave business man facade he presents to others.

You’ll find him sitting in his office, calmly gazing at the young woman lying dead on the floor in a growing pool of blood.

After he licks his knife clean, he slithers over, slurps up all of her blood and consumes most of her remains. He’d had high hopes for his daughter, but, she didn’t work out.

fallen angel photo: fallen angel Fallen_Angel.jpg

Then he calls in his trusted assistant, Marcus, to clean up after him.

Marcus is the worst of humanity, if you could call him human. He’s been killing since he was 10 years old. And now he’ll do whatever Andel asks of him, with pleasure, because of the promise to be made like him.

Next, you’ll meet Joanna, fresh out of a two and a half-year prison term for intent to distribute cocaine. At least one good thing came of her incarceration. She’s clean for once.

Her sister, Kim, picks her up outside the prison and takes her to their mother’s house. It’s now theirs, since her mother left it to them when she died. Joanna is torn up about missing her funeral.

Joanna and Maria, Kim’s young daughter, hit it off right away and it looks like they might all be living together for now.

When they go for the reading of the will, both sisters are surprised to discover their mother had an estate on Lake Geneva. She’d had it all along and never told them about it. The lawyer reveals there is also a painting of celestial beings somewhere that is quite valuable. A stipulation in the will states they can’t sell the homes or paintings unless they are forced to financially. And she’s left her special collection of stones to Maria, knowing the young girl will keep them safe.

The girls soon discover the painting in the lake house and the secrets hidden in the wall behind it.

Right then I had an inkling what their mother, Lydia, was and where this story might be going. I couldn’t wait to read further . This was getting really good.

Coincidence, or maybe not, lands Joanna in an important  position at Andel’s Evil Empire. That’s when she starts to hear the voices again, the ones she’d drowned out with booze and cocaine.

Between the voices, the doll talking to Maria and the startling events with a séance, things really start ramping up.

The chapters are short and really make this a fast read. I never slowed down and learned a lot about Heaven and Hell and it’s denizens.

I loved this story. Good and evil angels, nephilim, family secrets, and mystery and terror aplenty. Halo of the Damned is an exciting and  gripping tale of light and dark, good and evil, and those that stand against the Lord of Lies.

I love stories about angels and demons. Hunted promises to deliver both! It’s on my list of must reads and I’ll be reading it soon. I’ll be sure to tell you all about it when I’m finished!

Hunted by Ednah Walters
Bran and Lil may have escaped an attempt to lure Lil to the dark side, and recovered the contracts damned people signed with Bran when he was a soul collector, but someone forgot to tell them that no one switches sides or cancels contracts without consequences.

Hunted by an unknown but powerful enemy, Lil, Bran and the Guardians must seek help from unlikely sources to avert total annihilation of the Guardians. When they finally face their enemy, one of them may have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

All in all, Hunted is a very enjoyable read, especially for those who enjoy angel/demon books. This one has everything you want in an angel book while still maintaining its own distinct feel.

This series is addictive.

AMAZING! There is not enough words to describe how much I loved Hunted. Ednah Walters has outdid herself if that is even possible.

Author Ednah Walters

I grew up reading Nancy Drew and Hardy boys mysteries, hence Stratemeyer influence, before I graduated to Mills & Boons (starting with Janet Daily’s Shutter the Sky) and the rest is history.

I enjoy good love stories, tingly mysteries and wondrous adventures. When I finished my college and decided to be a stay-at-home mother, I devoured books like they were going out of production, until reading just wasn’t enough. So I started to write.

I’ve written picture books, contemporary and romantic suspense, biracial/multicultural books, and finally YA fantasy. Awakened is the first book in The Guardian Legacy series. I’m working on book 2, tentatively named Betrayed. When I’m not writing, I do things with my family, five children or my darling husband of 18 years. I live in a picturesque valley in Utah, the setting for my series.

Date Published: 12/1/2011
The Rapture has occurred – the end of the world. The faithful have risen up to Heaven.
Those left behind are in a living hell. Armed only with his swords and his wit, a teenage boy
wanders this post-apocalyptic world alone, separated forever from everyone he loves. Cursed
by his demonic heritage, he must now embark on a quest that will take him across the US to

My Review
Sam knows it’s time to move on, but he’s loathe to leave the only home he’s ever known.
The world as he knew it is long gone. All that’s left is a sky without stars, a blood-red moon when it can be seen through the continuous fall of ash. The world burns.
post apocalypse photo: Post-apocalypse inhell.jpg
Just as his master, Hikari, prophesied, the Rapture has occurred and all that he loved has risen to heaven.
Sam has been preparing for this time since he was but a boy. Now, at eighteen, he sets off to fulfill his destiny.
He’s used to being alone, never having got the knack of making friends with his peers. His closest companion was Aimi, Hikari’s sixteen year old daughter. She helped with his training and demanded nothing but his best.
Sam had to struggle with the dark half of himself, being half-demon. Wearing a hood to cover his horns and keeping his inhuman eyes downcast lest he draw attention to himself.
Now he’s all alone, angered to be denied entrance to Heaven and to seeing his beloved Aimi and his sensei ever again. Because of his demon blood Heaven is closed to him.
Now he wanders the blasted world, providing protection to the hapless souls left behind. He questions his fate and his destiny.
“Why bother to rescue these humans? Why should I, if I, myself, am denied entry to Heaven?”
Sam encounters many lemures, or demons. They reminded me of Pumpkinhead. And he had several epic battles with the Astaroth, a 10 foot tall creature, clad in armor, with huge wings and foot long talons. His proficiency with his two swords, his rigorous training and his quick reflexes kept him alive.
His only ally is a strange being who appeared “…the sky burst asunder with an intense golden light and a clap of thunder.”

female angels photo: 78 78.jpg

God has sent his messenger, Gabriel, to help Sam on his journey to reach his final destination, the city of angels.
The battles are vividly detailed and I now have a good idea of what Hell looks like. Sam’s struggles with his darker side drew me to him and the truth of who he is and the reason for his existence came as a shock. As I neared the end of the book, I realized there had to be more than one book. There was so much still to come.
Rapture is part of a series and a great beginning. I read it fairly quickly, never stumbled over awkward sentences and loved the action scenes. I’m ready to meet up with Sam again.

Age Group: Young Adult

Expected release: March 2014

Cover Reveal presented by AToMR Tours

Casey kicked cancer’s ass. Now a demon wants to kick hers…

Casey hates being known as the girl who survived cancer. She wants people to treat her like her old self, fearless and strong. And after a creepy encounter with a crazy guy in an alley, Casey is all about reclaiming her power.

So when she has a chance to try out for the Apocalypsies roller derby team, she jumps on it. Being a derby girl would prove that she doesn’t need anybody’s pity. It doesn’t hurt that Michael, the team manager, is almost unnaturally hot. Which makes sense when Casey finds out that he’s not even human.

Michael’s got a secret: he trains demon hunters. That crazy guy in the alley? Demon. And the fact that Casey went head to head with evil and lived makes her a threat to demonkind. Casey thought she’d already fought and won the battle of her lifetime. But it’s only beginning…

From Carrie Harris, author of Bad Taste in Boys and Bad Hair Day, comes a knockout new read for anyone facing their own demons—inside and out.

The Chronicles of Good and Evil - Dracula's Lair / The Darkest Tower

goodreads-badge-add-plus

Dracula‘s Lair/The Dark Tower

the first book in the Epic Fantasy Trilogy

The Chronicles of Good And Evil

1450. Southwest Ireland. Daniel Milligan is born. And dies the same day. But his Life is not over. It’s just beginning. And he’s not a Vampire. Daniel Milligan has become an Angel. And a Warrior. The 13th in an elite legion of Angels. With a life and death mission: The preservation of Good and the death of Evil.
Their foe is the essence of evil incarnate. Satan. The Devil himself. Now allied with Dracula. Not Bram Stoker’s monster of Legend, Folklore and Myth, but the real flesh and blood creature. Will the Supernatural powers of their massed army of Demons, Werewolves and Vampires enable them to rule the World?
Earth’s landscape is soon to be reshaped. But for good? – Or evil? Magic and Wizards are powerless. Evil lingers in the abyss of night. And only the Epic Quest of Daniel and his Angel Warriors can challenge it.
But Daniel is torn between the family he never knew – and his duty to all mankind. Thrust into an unknown Paranormal World and time where the line between Fantasy and reality is vague – Daniel must choose between his Human family and his duty to all Humanity.
In the darkest tower of Draculas castle – an apocalyptic battle will decide the fate of all mankind. There can be only one victor. One who will write the final chapter in the Chronicles of Good and Evil.

About C. David Murphy

C. David Murphy

Being raised in the mountains of North Carolina had a special influence on me. The dreams that invented these stories started there. Even at an early age, being all of six, my teachers saw the capacity in me to create stories with such depth – that they seemed to marvel at the tales which I wrote for my class assignments. While my devotion to and inspiration for writing continued to be strong through my teen age years, there was a force equally strong bearing it’s influence. Parents! My Father in particular. Who was, understandably, not “over the moon” with the idea of his son pursuing a career as perilous and uncertain as a writer.

And so, finally I embarked on a financial career. With my bachelor’s degree in accounting, I’ve spent the majority of my Adult life in both the retail and manufacturing industries. But I never stopped writing. Because that’s what and who I am. There is no greater joy I’ve found on this earth than to create characters with true and genuine emotions, feel their heartbeat through every word I write; their trails, their hopes and ambitions; to breathe life into their eyes and see their souls become one with me and the reader. It’s my hope that when someone picks up my stories and reads the full weight of them, that somehow I’ve affected change in their lives, brought them to places they could never have imagined before, and moved them to believe in humanity again – to go out into the world and create “goodwill towards all”.
