Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

Ever had one of those weeks where you seem to be moving in slow motion? LOL I had one. And do you know what I did about it. I had a three day weekend and pretty much did nothing but TV and reading. Talk about a reboot of energy. Friday I stayed in bed til 8 A.M. finishing a book. Then I lolled around, ate too much, took a long nap and stayed up late reading. Saturday was a repeat. Today I plan to take a dip in the pool and hit some thrift shops. Maybe I’ll find some books!

5 Elements of Steampunk & Why You Should Add it to Your TBR List

1. Beautiful World-Building

 howls moving castle GIF

Steampunk is science fiction which takes place in the past. An alternate history where inventions, gadgets, and personal conveniences do not belong, and yet, are there. Often these inventions are powered by steam, hydraulics, clockwork, gyroscopic action, or pretty much anything but gasoline. The author has to create a beautiful Victorian setting where mechanical items exist that shouldn’t in Victorian history.

2. Strong Female Characters

HULU GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

It was in the Victorian era that feminism grew by leaps and bounds and the suffrage movement gained major traction. Because of the strong influences of women in the time period in which steampunk has its roots, they tend to take centerstage in the interpretation of this genre. Who doesn’t like a woman who steals the show or takes charge?

3. Action and Adventure

Supercompressor wild wild west mechanical spider wild wild west spider GIF

What would inventive fiction be without an inventive plotline? In Steampunk you will find a bit of drama, a bit of fantasy, a tad of mystery, but generally, you’ll find adventure that expands the horizons of your imagination… often viewed from an airship or mechanical animal.

4. Fun Fashion and Costumes

stardust robert de niro charlie cox michelle pfeiffer neil gaiman GIF

Not many genres can boast an entire theme of Cosplay. People love to dress in steampunk fashions for Comic Cons, book conventions, Halloween, and parties. Even the high fashion world has runway shows dedicated to this style of dressing. Go to Etsy and search “steampunk” you’ll find all sorts of fun things to wear while you read.

5. It’s More Familiar Than You Think

The gifs in this post are all from movies or shows you may have watched: Wild Wild West with Will Smith, Stardust with Claire Danes, the animated film, Howl’s Moving Castle, and episodes of Dr. Who. If you’ve loved any of these shows, you’ve already gotten a taste of Steampunk. Don’t pass up the chance to read a book or watch a movie just because of the clever combination of past and present themes. Give it a try and you may find yourself a new fan of the genre!

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

Happy Easter everyone!

Been a weird, quiet week for me. Other than work I’ve been very lazy and it feels so good. LOL

I watched this wild video on the news about a horse attacking an alligator.

I felt sorry for the poor thing, but I’m sure the horse was just protecting it’s herd. Who knows what had happened in that long grass. And it almost got a bite of the stallion.

Been binging a new show I found on Netflix called The Doctor Blake Mysteries. It’s an Australian murder mystery series with some great casting and intriguing plots. Totally hooked!

Other than that, been reading, reading, reading…..I’ve been lax on writing reviews the past week but have some good ones coming up next week. Be sure to drop by as some of them have giveaways included.

Now on to the books!

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

So, I’ve been sitting here watching the cursor blink for about 5 minutes, and still nothing. Been another 2 minutes and drawing a blank. I’m actually watching commercials to avoid another blank. Then….something popped into my head. Funny how something dull inspires.

I’m wondering which you like to watch more, movies or shows? Since Netflix came along I’m watching more and more shows. But I still love the movies and with On Demand and Netflix, I never have to go without. That all got me thinking about when I was young. Remember when the TV went off the air? They played the National Anthem and then nothing but static. And there were only a few channels to watch and it was black and white, no color. Now it’s 24/7 and you can watch from so many devices.

I also remember learning to use a Wordprocesser in college and thinking it was so awesome. Most kids now don’t even know what one is. And electric typewriters. Boy were they special!

So much has changed and it’s been my fortune to see it all happen. I can’t imagine ever losing all of this fabulous technology, so cross your fingers the Zombie apocalypse never happens!

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

This week was spring break here on the coast and I had the week off of work. It was glorious and went by too fast. I want a ground hog day where I go back and do the same week over, and over, and…..LOL

I didn’t do much of anything. Read some books.Watched some movies and shows. Stayed up late and actually slept in past 7! At least I’m well rested.

Sorry I didn’t visit a lot. Tried to stay away from the computer, though I did sneak in some time each day. I couldn’t help it. The dang thing was sitting there. Waiting for me to touch it.

Do you like a staycation where you stay at home or do you like to travel?

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

Did you notice? It’s my 200th Sunday post!

I have had such fun with this meme and can’t thank Kimberly enough for hosting it. I’ve met so many amazing fellow book lover’s and discovered many wonderful authors and books. It’s been a wonderful experience and I plan to keep on going.

And I got my new computer. I decided to let my computer guru dispose of my old one, but I did hang on to the hard drive, just in case. It’s taking me a bit to get the hang of this new computer. The keys are configured a bit differently and I find myself hitting the next key to the right all the time. I fixed that by moving my computer over a little bit, and doing better now. LOL It’s a Dell Inspiron and has all kinds of bells and whistles I’ll be checking out.

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

He’s getting old and cranky. We’ve never really seen eye to eye. And I’m ready for a change. It’s time for someone new. But what to do with him? He’s still functional. Still handy. I could smash him with a hammer. It would feel good, for a while. Then I’d feel ashamed….sad, wonder why I didn’t keep him around for emergencies. I better think about it.

Guess what! I’m getting a new computer. A new engine to drive my thoughts and ideas. Yes, I refer to my old computer as a he. Didn’t give him a name though. We’re like Venus and Mars in a lot of ways. LOL But he kept going and going, so I’m thinking I’ll keep him. Just in case.

What do you do with your old computer? Do you laugh maniacally as you smash it to bits like you wanted to so many times? Or do you keep it?

And did I get you in the beginning? What did you think I was referring to, or whom?
