Genre:  Post Apocalyptic

Synopsis

Sixty years ago the world was wrecked during a terrible war. The soil was poisoned. The air became toxic. Billions died. Those who survived took refuge in great towered cities, and began constructing giant colony ships that would enable them to escape the ruined Earth.

The work wasn’t completed in their lifetime. The seas rose to swamp the diseased land, and lap against the city walls. Their descendants laboured on, and now the first of the spaceships is nearing completion.

But these cities aren’t dictatorships. An election is scheduled to choose a leader for this last exodus of humanity. With twenty-four hours until voting is due to begin, two workers are murdered. It is the first serious crime in generations, and it is down to the young Constable Ely to solve it. The election must take place. The ships must be launched. Above all, production must come first.

 The Fearing: Fire And Rain

The Fearing #1

by John F.D. Taff

Genre:  Horror / Apocalyptic

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

End of the world stories are a favorite of mine, Throw in something supernatural and I’m even happier.

I’m also attracted to character driven stories and the author has a special talent here. His characters came to life in just a few words. I could easily “see” them.

As the end begins for three different groups of people I was struck by how the events made me think someone had taken the Earth and shook it like one of those snow globes. Each event was different and catastrophic.

And with all good horror, there needs to be a bad guy. I’m not sure what his plan is, but if this beginning is anything to go by, it’s going to be very bad. He reeks of some seriously bad vibes.

Fire And Rain is the first book in Taff”s The Fearing serial and I was quickly hooked. I already have the next two books and I anticipate it getting crazier and more out of this world the further in I go.

Trackers #4

by Nicholas Sansbury Smith

Genre:  Apocalyptic

My Review

So, this is the final book in a series that is especially chilling as it reads like something that could possibly happen. After gobbling up the previous books, I made sure to set aside time to read this straight through. So many of these characters were near and dear to me and I was anxious to find out how they were doing.

The president is between a rock and a hard place. Recovery is slowing to a crawl after the attack on the US and China is offering aid in the form of soldiers and supplies. There are many who object to this and will go to any lengths to stop it.

And things aren’t going well back at Estes Park Colorado either. People are reeling after being betrayed by some of their own.

You know how it is when you love a series, become so attached to the characters and can’t wait to see how it ends but don’t want it to end ? That’s how I felt about this one. And I couldn’t imagine how the author would wrap it all up. Well, Smith knocked it out of the park. The action was intense and almost non stop and it was anyone’s bet who would still be standing once the dust settled.

I’ll miss these characters. The good, the bad and the ugly ones. And a very special dog named Creek. They still linger in my mind and now that I’m finished, I want to go back and read the series all over again.

Synopsis

The deadly hunt ends in the fourth and final installment of the bestselling Trackers saga…

The mountain town of Estes Park, Colorado is scrambling to recover from the betrayal of two of their police officers, and prepare for threats outside their borders. But with Chief of Police Marcus Colton imprisoned by rival Sheriff Mike Thompson, the job to protect the isolated town is left to Sam ‘Raven’ Spears and newly promoted Captain Lindsey Plymouth. They will do everything they can to bring Colton home, and save their citizens, but one thing is certain: a war is coming to Estes Park, and no one will be spared from the horrors.

Across the country, Secretary of Defense Charlize Montgomery continues to lead recovery efforts in the wake of the arriving Chinese workers and soldiers. But the threat of foreign soldiers on American soil isn’t the only problem–the Sons of Liberty and other domestic terrorist groups continue to rise to power, enacting a wave of violence, and chaos that threatens to derail the recovery efforts.

Will Raven, Colton, and Charlize save the United States from collapse? One thing is certain–they won’t be able to save everyone. Not with their humanity still intact.

From former Homeland Security Disaster Mitigation Officer and USA Today bestselling author Nicholas Sansbury Smith, comes another harrowing story of survival in a post-apocalyptic world that readers and critics are hailing as one of the best post-apocalyptic books of 2017.

Synopsis

Young Adult, Apocalyptic, Survival, Horror

The end of the world? That’s the stuff of Hollywood blockbusters and deep philosophical exercises in school. No need to sweat it. So when sixteen-year-old Tess’s doomsday-dad builds a bomb shelter in their suburban backyard, everyone thinks he’s gone crazy….

…Until fire rains down from the sky, sinking whole cities into colossal craters and setting much of the world ablaze.

Before leaving, he makes Tess promise to keep the hatch door shut, not to open it for anyone but him, and to stay put until he returns.

Congeal

by John F. Leonard

46638843. sy475

Genre: Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I love a scary good read, whether in large doses or in nibbles. Congeal is a small book with plenty of big scenes. One in particular was sad and I wished hadn’t happened.

How do I describe the plot. I’m thinking equal parts The Blob and Cloverfield, the movies. With some touches of John Carpenter’s The Thing. Whatever it is that oozes up from the bowels of the earth and seeks to consume everything on the planet is terrifying.

The author sets up the story quickly, brings the characters to life and then unleashes some wild scenes. Many don’t survive.

Take a look at the fabulous cover. That’s just one of the things you have to worry about with this stuff. Is it sentient? What will stop it? Can it be stopped? All questions I had to know the answers to. Did I get those answers? Some, yes. Some, I drew my own conclusions. And that’s okay. A good book should keep me thinking about if afterwards.

I was wrapped up in this immediately and could easily have read Congeal as a full length novel. Short stories are meant to be read in gulps and the author did a great job.

Synopsis

It starts with reports on the news of an inland lake turning semi-solid.
Surely, a media joke, some lame April Fool’s prank?
The before and after pictures are vaguely ludicrous and oddly disturbing, the contrast stark and strange.
First, darkly rippling water that hints at hidden depths. Slightly spooky and perfectly normal. Next, a putrid blotch of clotted sludge which bears little resemblance to anything aquatic.

It isn’t a joke.
And pretty soon, that greasy, sickening substance isn’t confined to an inland lake.
It’s spreading. Flowing over fields and filling streets.
Each morning brings a new revelation. Countryside denuded of life and towns empty and echoing.
The night is when it changes, becomes something that consumes. Something infinitely worse than a congealed impossibility.

CONGEAL is a short tale of apocalyptic horror. How the world ends may not be how you expect. Nuclear Armageddon or a zombie apocalypse could get beaten to the punch.
Our apocalypse may come from below.
An ancient, cosmic entity bubbling up to the surface in search of food.
It’s also the story of one individual and her fight to stay afloat in a sea of despair.

My Review

This starts off pretty much where the last book left off. X and Magnolia, along with his dog, Miles, are braving the dark ocean on board the Sea Wolf, searching for the ever elusive Metal Islands. What used to appear to be a myth is now looking more like the real thing. And Katrina is settling into her role as captain of both the Deliverance and the Hive. Her command comes with tough choices and a learning curve. As X and his motley crew deal with their demons from the deep, so Katrina deals with her own inner doubts and all the complications of making decisions for the good of the last remaining survivors of Earth.

Yes, I was hoping this would start with a bang, and it sure did. X and the gang are soon in over the heads as the author throws  the book at them; killer sharks, a mutant kraken, giant vultures and man eating metal-skinned hogs. The action never really lets up. Not for the occupants of the Sea Wolf and not for those floating in the ships above. The author adds more danger with a surprise enemy or two.

As I neared the end of the book my anxiety was through the roof! It was exciting to see the  crew from Deliverance finally land on the surface. They’d been there before, seen the horrific conditions, the deadly monsters, but they still weren’t ready for what they encountered. Some perish while others face what seem to me to be insurmountable odds. This is nothing new in the series. With mutant creatures ruling solid ground, death is always looming. What got me was a couple of scenes with Magnolia and Miles. The author had me in tears and that takes some doing with me. And a rescue scene with X had me so tied up in knots I feared to read on. Sure, X is a main characters and the all powerful alpha male, but that doesn’t mean he’ll survive and continue to the end of the series.

I was about to say this series keeps getting better and better, but that’s not necessarily what I want to convey.  I can’t choose any book that is better than the other. Each books is awesome. The action is super fast. And the situations are mind blowing. Where it gets better in each book is the character growth and the secrets revealed. I finally learned how the world ended. I should have guessed it, but I didn’t.

Loved Wolves. Hell Divers IV. Love the Hell Divers Series. “They Dive So Humanity Survives.” And the author can’t write more fast enough. I have my fingers and toes crossed that these will be made into movies!

My Review

Antarctica. A desolate, frigid place at the bottom of the world. The scientists and students do their research and take their samples, unaware that something that appears so innocent will soon threaten all of humanity.

It’s almost the end of the season. Winter is coming and only the most dedicated stay at the station. The others head for warmer places. The rush is on to get their research and samples on the planes before they hightail it out of there. An accident happens. Something is unleashed, and people are turned into raging lunatics.  I know this sounds like a zombie story. It’s not. Bear with me here.

Once the contagion begins a small group of people try to hide while coming up with a way out. They have no idea how many have been turned. There’s no help coming. And this is one of my favorite parts of the plot. The group dynamics. Who steps up? How many sacrifice themselves? Who is the dissenter, the one who always takes the negative view and causes conflict? And who surprises me and steps up to wear the hero’s shoes?

The fight for survival is nail biting. They have to find ways stay alive in freezing temps. And now the infected are changing. They’re not like zombies. Instead of rotting away, they’re getting stronger. From mindless rabid beings, they’re now starting to act as a team. To strategize. Could the organism actually be sentient? It takes over the host and now it appears able to control them too.  The more they discovered about the infection, the more horrifying it gets. What if the organism can cross the species barrier. Could it infect animals? The cold and lack of life in Antarctica kept it contained under the frozen tundra. Once it reaches warmer climates, what’s to stop it.

You have to expect some deaths will happen to the group. At first I wasn’t too worried about it. I hadn’t really developed a strong bond with any of them. It was after the action really got going that I found a favorite. Vasily Fedorov, Russian ex-military but now a blue collar guy. He can make weapons out of anything. He’s super resourceful, haunted by horrors from his past and also a really good guy. I sure want him to survive! I love his quote – “No room for feelings in struggle to survive. Survival important, not pride.”

As the group is pursued from one station to the next., their food supply runs low and their options dwindle. It’s anyone’s guess who will survive, if any. And if they do, will there be a world to get back to? I couldn’t see how this would end. It seemed so bleak and hopeless. This excerpt explains how bad it is.

“And here we are, in our very own horror movie. Only, in the movies, I can usually guess where the ending is going. Here, though, I have no clue. I just can’t see it. It’s not like there is safety on the outskirts of town. There is nothing on the outskirts of town here but a cold, frozen death. And beyond that – more cold.”  Sums it up.

I grabbed this as a free download on Amazon. I’d seen it on another blog and the cover caught my eye. I crossed my fingers and started reading it. I read it straight through and I’m so happy I can give it a high recommendation. I’ll be checking out what else the author has to offer now.

Excerpt from  Pandora: Book #1

Jack Minnow grabbed a brochure off the rack and his eyes scanned the back page. “It says here that rule breakers are ten times more likely to survive an apocalypse. They’re adaptable and they rely on cunning and instinct.”

Jack was five-foot-eight, and the woman behind the counter, called an operator, was easily six-feet tall. Looking at her was like looking at a marble statue atop a pedestal. All white – her hair, her tight-fitting jump suit, her face, neck, and hands, painted to resemble a computer generated character. He allowed himself to imagine that the stage make-up covered places he couldn’t see.

She smiled at him. “It also says that rule breakers are ten times more likely to die within the first hour. They’re reckless and often act without thinking.”

She pushed a plastic tray towards him, the kind handed out at airports to slip under x-ray machines. Jack dropped his wallet, phone, and car keys into the tray.

“So it’s a win/win day for a guy with a superhero complex,” he said.

Superman, his mother had called him after he’d brought home a stray dog for the fifth time.

“Can’t help but save things,” she’d told the dog ranger. Even as a boy, Jack knew what happened to the mutts who were handed over to the ranger, but he still brought dogs home for one last night of fun. His superhero complex was the reason he’d entered The Apocalypse Games. Save everyone. Save the world. Nobody dies. Not for real anyway.

The operator removed the tray and he stood there waiting for a voucher. None came. A warning flared up into his brain. What did he really know about this operation?
