Welcome to Freakin Fridays, where I share my reviews of books that scare you, thrill you, and get those endorphins pumping.

I’ve been delving back into some science fiction. Those of you who know me won’t be surprised that this also has elements of horror. It’s time for some aliens!

My Review

The opening scene is from 40 years ago. A group of friends slowly regain consciousness, battered and confused about what had happened to them.  Flash forward 40 years and the suicide of one of the group. The event brings them back to the place they’d hoped never to return to. It was time to dust off the buried memories they couldn’t outrun and once and for all put an end to them.

This is a fairly short story and I think that worked well. I was quickly filled in on past events and the author kept the momentum of the story moving right along as the story leapt to the present and the scary stuff began.

Ever wondered about those reported cattle mutilations? Does the government know who or what is behind them?  Michael McBride took those elements and gave me quite the scary read. He also kept me guessing. What really happened to all of those missing people? Was it aliens or wasn’t it?

As the childhood friends meet up 40 years later they have their own set of questions. Did they stop it all those years ago or did whoever or whatever was doing the killings just learn to hide their actions better? How could they not be discovered? This is where it got particularly creepy. As the characters get their answers so did I, and they weren’t what I was expecting. I leapt to one conclusion and then to another and back again.

I wish I could share how it all ends. Another surprise.

Did I enjoy Unidentified? Yes, I did. Especially when the story took a surprising and creepy turn. Would I recommend it? Sure enough. It’s a fun spin on alien’s that would make a great movie.

Joe Hempel did a good with the creepy scenes and I could easily tell which character was speaking. He made this a fun experience and I’d gladly listen to him again.

It’s been too long since I’ve shared some horror and I have a good one for ya. I listened to The Beast Of Barcroft and it was a Cryptid treat.

~~~~~
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
Right from the beginning I felt almost like I was watching a movie. Cue the music as an ominous scene unfolds and the mystery of the The Beast Of Barcroft began.  I was hooked.
Ben is a sympathetic character. He thinks he’s finally moving up in the world. That his hard work has paid off. That’s until he discovers that his posh new digs are planted right alongside a rundown house riddled with rats and stray cats. His life begins to fall apart. And it changes forever when he sees the creature that killed his beloved dog.
Yep, I thought I should warn you, a dog dies in this story. But the author doesn’t describe it’s death. Just what happens afterwards. When Ben faces the beast, it’s so otherworldly yet so beautiful.
The story moves swiftly then. The mystery deepens, some vital characters are introduced and the horror of the beast takes over.
Wowser. I thought I knew what the beast was. But I was way off. It was something new to me and that’s a huge bonus. I love cryptids and this one prowled right out of folklore in all its shiny newness. Some scenes were more subtle. And some were so intense I couldn’t see how anyone would survive. Some didn’t. Some did, and they want after the beast. The final confrontation seemed hopeless. I braced myself and took what the author dished out. But, wait. It wasn’t over. There was one more violent confrontation. Then it was over.
Now, about the final battle. I thought about it for awhile. Then I decided it worked. Might not be what I wanted, but it worked.
Did I enjoy The Beast Of Barcroft? Yes I did. The audible is over seven hours long and I listened to it straight through. Would I recommend it? In a heartbeat.
Synopsis
Ben McKelvie believes he’s moving up in the world when he and his fiancée buy a house in the cushy Washington, D.C., suburb of Barcroft. Instead, he’s moving down—way down—thanks to Madeleine Roux, the crazy neighbor whose vermin-infested property is a permanent eyesore and looming hazard to public health.
First, Ben’s fiancée leaves him; then, his dog dies, apparently killed by a predator drawn into Barcroft by Madeleine’s noxious menagerie. But the worst is yet to come for Ben, for he’s not dealing with any ordinary wild animal. This killer is something much, much worse. Something that couldn’t possibly exist—in this world.
Now, as a devilish creature stalks the locals, Ben resolves to take action. With some grudging assistance from a curator at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and the crackpot theories of a self-styled cryptozoologist, he discovers the sinister truth behind the attacks, but knowing the Beast of Barcroft and stopping it are two different animals.
Welcome to my Monday Minis where I share shorter reviews of books I’ve read.
Today I’m back with more thrills and romance from Katie Ruggle’s Rocky Mountain K9 Unit. I know this is supposed to be a shorter review, but I just couldn’t keep it that way. The series ender needed to be crowed about!
My Review
Having loved the first book in this thrilling series, I came to expect something more with the following ones. And after finishing each one I’d think, this is my favorite. I did get more than I expected with each book and each one did become my favorite. Guess that means the author will surely have to wow me again with this fourth book. And I won’t keep you in suspense. She did.
Kit Jernigan and Wesley March are the star character’s this time around. Kit is the beta to Wesley’s alpha. She may seem like the alpha in the beginning, as Wesley is a bit of a loner and prefers his time alone. But when the danger comes calling in the guise of one of their own, Wesley sheds his loner persona and steps right into his alpha role, making them a formidable team.
I like how Katie changed things somewhat, giving a female K-9 officer a leading role. And where usually the previous character’s have a more supporting role, this time they all come out to shine together. This worked gloriously. There were so many funny, adorable scenes, my face hurt from grinning. And my jaw hurt from clenching my teeth at the scenes of extreme danger and betrayal. Every one of my feels came into play and I couldn’t have asked for more.
The author wraps up her series with an ending that set me back on my heels. Whoa. I sure want to tell you all about it, but……..
Genuine character’s with flaws and insecurities have continuously stepped up to the plate throughout this series. Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten their brave, true and most loyal four-legged partner’s and companions. Being a binge watcher, if this were ever made into a television series, I’d watch it over and over again.
Did I enjoy Through The Fire? Oh, yes. Every single bit of it. Would I recommend it? I gave it the highest rating allowed. That should answer the question!
~~~~~

Synopsis

He’s tall.

He’s dark.

He’s brutally handsome . . .

And he may be her only hope.

Kit Jernigan despairs of ever fitting in with her new tight-knit K9 unit—they’ve been through too much to welcome a stranger. So when a killer strikes, it’s a fight to convince her fellow officers to trust her long enough to catch the woman she knows is responsible.

She can’t do it on her own. What she needs most is a partner: local fire spotter Wesley March.

Wes knows in his heart that Kit is right, and he’s willing to leave his lonely tower to help her prove it. But the more time they spend together, the hotter the fire smolders . . . and the more danger they’re in. A member of the K9 unit’s inner circle is determined to have her revenge—no matter who gets burned in the process.

This time, it’s personal.

My Review

I got hooked quickly in the first book in this series and while the author wrapped it up nicely, she introduced a new character and a new twist to lead to the next story. And I enjoyed this one every bit as much.

Old characters dip into and out of the action as they all work together in one way or another. The ladies may play the part of a damsel in distress, but they don’t wait for one of the sexy alpha’s to rescue them. They get right in the thick of things.

And the part I’m sure you are waiting for. The dogs! Not only can Katie give us genuine human characters, she also does this with her four legged ones. you’ll fall in love with each one. You’ll fear for their lives as much as their human partners. They are working dogs, trained for specific duties and highly intelligent, yet also gentle, loving, and up to some silly antics.

A series like this is made to order for me. I met all of the character’s in the first book and each one that comes after has a secondary character step up and have their own story.

Suspense, romance and sharp and witty dialogue keep the story moving at a fast clip. I’d love to this made into a movie or series. there would never be a dull moment.

My Review

i can’t get enough of  this series. And I love ones like this where each new book brings forth some secondary characters, letting their stars shine. Double tough women in danger, alpha men with soft spots for their women and animals, dogs that risk their lives for their humans yet also get up to fun antics, makes this a golden series for me.

It’s new danger, new romance, and the suspense keeps the plot edgy and fast. In fact, I’d say this one had the most thrilling scenes yet. When I wasn’t anxious for the safety of the characters, I was tickled by the blooming romance, the snappy, sometimes snarky dialogue, and the antics of the dogs and one crazy goat.

I can’t decide who I love more. Katie’s human character’s or her canine ones. Good thing I can love them all!

Still an addictive series and one I very much recommend.

The Book Of Riley #4

by Mark Tufo

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

So much fun. So much action and fun scenes along with tie-ins to Tufo’s Zombie Fallout Series. Now I have to read those too.

The author brought his character’s a long ways. Breathed them to life, put them through the wringer, and now brings them to the end of their story. I approached this final chapter with trepidation. If I were a nail biter, my finger tips would be bloody. Thankfully, Tufo gives some comic relief at times to ease the suspense.

Love you Riley. Such a brave good girl. There’s an endless supply of bacon at the end of the rainbow for you.

Being the end of the series, I was hoping for a lot. But, it felt a bit loose and turned me inside out. Wait, though. There is one more book, written some years later. If I have the courage to try this one more time, maybe the end won’t be so haunting.

The Book Of Riley #3

by Mark Tufo

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

Riley, an American Bulldog, and her pack, consisting of Ben Ben, the Yorkie, Patches, the cat, and the two humans, Jessie and her baby brother, struggle to find safe haven from the zombies.

A huge surprise in the last book provided the pack with a secret weapon. I was skeptical about it at first, then rolled with the idea.  But even that might not be enough as Icely is dogging their trail. He’s such a sick twist. Made me hate like the Governor did in The Walking Dead. I longed for him to die, horribly. So the race is on and there’s no guarantees who will still be standing once the dust settles.

Things are really getting dicey in this third book and I’m worried about the pack. I’ve become quite fond of these character’s and that attachment sure kept things edgy.

This is the most intense yet in the series and I can hardly wait to see how events unfold in the next book.

Synopsis

During the highly improbable zombie uprising of 2013, the fearless American bulldog Riley quickly discovered that it was up to her to keep the pack safe. Together with Yorkshire terrier Ben-Ben and former archenemy Patches the cat, Riley struggles to keep the zombies at bay while helping her favorite human, Jessie, as they travel cross-country, dodging pepper paint balls and taser blasts from the evil, misogynistic Icely and his band of thugs.

Now this motley mishmash of mammals are running for their lives. The wicked Icely has picked up their scent and is now chasing them across the badlands of Colorado in hopes of seeking revenge—a painful one at that—on the dog that tried to kill him, as well as on the “bitches” who got away.

Seen through the eyes of a random narrator and Riley, we have to wonder: will Icely and his men chase them down and zap them into oblivion, or will the zombies finally win and get the brains they desperately crave?

The Book Of Riley #2

by Mark Tufo

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

Book Two starts up immediately where it left off in the first book. The character’s are in a tight spot, needing gas for the vehicle but zombies surround the gas pumps. They need out, the zombies want in. It gets messy.

It’s not just zombies the pack has to worry about. Society breaks down and so does humanity, bringing out the dark in many. I am an animal lover and feel I should warn you about a scene where Riley is forced to fight another dog. Eben animals have to do unspeakable things to survive. Given how the story is told from her point of view, it was scary and heart wrenching.

But the story also has some lighter moments. Especially with Ben Ben, the little ankle biter, and his frequent bowel releases and Patches, the cat, with her superior snarkiness.

Plus there are a couple of surprises that have me so curious about the next installment in the series. Moving on to it now.

The Book Of Riley is a unique view on a zombie apocalypse and I’m still having fun with it.

My Review

It was a dark and stormy night. Well, actually it was a quiet night. Riley was grousing about Ben-Ben’s piddle on the floor and the Yorkie’s constant whining about something outside. The quiet night soon turns violent when the dogs realize the humans pounding on the door wanting in are zombies.

Riley is a female American Bulldog . Solid in build and loyal to the family. Once she figures out what’s going down she dons her defense mode and goes to work. The pack, human and four-legged, must be protected.

But the zombies won’t be denied their meal and soon bust into the house. The man and Riley put up a valiant fight but the zombies have the numbers and those left of the pack that make it out of the house alive soon realize that they may have won the fight but its only the beginning.

Ben-Ben is just what you’d expect a Yorkie to be like. All nervous energy. He has these spontaneous bowel releases whenever he’s overexcited or scared. Which is often and hilarious.

The cat, Patches, is all cat. A superior attitude and thinks about herself first. She looks down her whiskers at the dogs and humans but knows as a group they stand a better chance of surviving. Zombies don’t discriminate in their munching. Animals go down just as easy as humans.

Two dogs, a cat, a young girl and an infant. All that’s left of the pack. Will they learn to work together? What does the future hold for them? I couldn’t wait to read further.

There’s plenty of zombie action. Bloody bits flying everywhere. As much as it was gory, it was also funny at times. The story is mostly meat, very little fluff, so the action is fast and furious. This works really well as you’re getting this story from Riley’s point of view. And there’s an ending, of a sort. This is one of four stories about Riley and her pack. I’m already listening to the second one and its proving to be every bit as fun.

My Review

I do love a good cozy and I’m always looking for a new one. The clever title and whimsical cover caught my attention immediately. I thought this could be a fun one.

Claire works with her grandfather at their shop, The Rescued Word. I love that name. It’s a typewriter repair shop and they also restore old books and sell paper supplies. Sounds like a place I could spend time in. And the location for their shop is fun too, Bygone Alley. We have some side streets like these in the town I live in and they have such unique little shops hidden in them.

When a man comes in demanding a typewriter be given to him that was earlier dropped off for repair by someone else, he gets irate and the police are called. They take a closer look at the typewriter and something is strange about it. Later the man is found dead and the mystery begins.

  I enjoyed visiting Star City. Who doesn’t want to spend time in a ski resort. The isolation made the mystery more intriguing too. Lots of strangers to add to the suspect list.

Many of the characters were a joy to meet and I loved the friendship between Claire and Jodie. Jodie’s her friend but also a cop and she could be one or the other as needed.

A fun, frisky cozy with genuine characters and a good spin on a mystery, I’m glad I read To Helvetica And Back. I’ll be back for more.

Star City is known for its slopes and its powder. But nestled in the valley of this ski resort town is a side street full of shops that specialize in the simple charms of earlier eras. One of those shops is the Rescued Word, where Chester Henry and his adult granddaughter Clare lovingly repair old typewriters and restore old books. Who ever thought their quaint store would hold the key to some modern-day trouble?

When a stranger to town demands they turn over an antique Underwood typewriter they’re repairing for a customer, Clare fears she may need to be rescued. A call to the police scares the man off, but later Clare finds his dead body in the back alley. What about a dusty old typewriter could possibly be worth killing for?
