My Review

They look like ordinary cats. Same shapes and sizes. Don’t let that fool you. These little kitties are killers. It only takes some flesh and blood to turn them into monsters. And some fool gives it to them.

What could be more horrific than giving these cats powers. How about being able to turn living things to ash. Or how about mind control? Or consuming a living creature until there’s nothing left?  What makes the scientists think they can make them into lethal weapons and control them?

As you can surmise, things go every which way but the right one and these killer cats get down to business. I found it particularly fun that they can think and plot. The litter of odd cats all have unique abilities. Some that can’t be weaponized and some that can. But the furry critters aren’t cooperative and one in particular has a dastardly agenda all it’s own.

Fur flies. Claws scratch. Teeth gnash. And all out war comes to man. You’ll look at felines in a different way after this story.

My Review

When will they learn? Someone always thinks they can tamper with Mother Nature and it inevitably ends up with bloodshed and death.

The pet food company knows something’s wrong with their product, but the side affects to the cats opens another door. A door with big dollars, when several other countries want the formula for their own.

When the animal rights activists free the cats, they have no idea of the repercussions. These aren’t your ordinary house cats anymore. They are much larger, packed with muscle, longer teeth, and larger claws and they are hungry, always hungry. You don’t dare get between them and their food.

There’s a slow building romance between Patricia, the former head of research at the pet food company, and Jerry, an undercover special ops soldier. What’s a good horror story without some romance and characters to care about.

Throw in some scumbags and mysterious characters with hidden agendas and you have a great tale of suspense, mayhem, and murder.

You might think cats aren’t a big deal, but these cats aren’t ordinary. They’re hormonally enhanced, much more lethal than your normal house cat. They’re also very vicious. Let’s put it this way, they’re spitting mad.

You could probably handle a few when they attack, but when they ambush you in large numbers, you’re kibble.

Imagine what happens when dogs become involved.

After reading Claws, I’ll never look at my pets the same way again. Who knows what’s in that new brand of pet food you just bought?

I liked everything about this book. The author moves you through the scenes smoothly, building the suspense, putting the horror right in your face, and sprinkling many colorful, intriguing characters throughout the story to make this a very exciting read.

And you get a killer ending that also leaves an exciting opening for more of this story, which continues in Claws 2. It’s like the last scene in a not so happily ever after movie.

On to read Book Two!

Synopsis

Alcorn Pet Food Corporation is working with an experimental cat food laced with hormones and appetite enhancers. The special food causes cats to add muscle, gain weight, and exhibit extremely aggressive behavior. When an employee threatens to expose the pet food as a threat to public safety, she finds herself out of work, her home ransacked, and all her carefully gathered proof missing. Meanwhile, animal rights activists release the cats involved in the testing because they are scheduled to be euthanized. These bigger, stronger, and more aggressive animals begin to prey on small game in the area. Then the ravenous cats turn their attention to people.

Lovers, runners, hunters, dogs, deer, rabbits, normal cats, and even motorists begin to fall victim to the predations of these enhanced felines. An unemployed scientist, a small special ops team, a grieving father, a chief of security, and a homeless veteran join forces to try to prevent a catastrophe.

When a murderer steals the secret formula that created the menace and sells it to eight foreign enemies of the United States, the stakes suddenly get a lot higher, because the most deadly biological weapon ever created has just been released. The genie is out of the bottle and the world will never be the same.

To make matters worse, the scientist discovers that the first generation offspring will be even bigger and more aggressive, and then they learn that the food also affects dogs and rats.

33145741  The Night of the Beasts by [Brown, Eric S. ]

Welcome to Freakin Fridays, where I share my reviews of books that scare you, thrill you, and get those endorphins pumping.

Today I’m back with two more stories about the big hairy dude, Sasquatch. These aren’t about the warm and cuddly ones either.

 Boggy Creek

The Legend Is True

by Eric S. Brown and Jennifer Minar-Jaynes

Genre: Horror

My Review

I’ve watched a lot of horror movies about Sasquatch. Read a bunch of books too. So I was rubbing my greedy little hands together when I got this book. I knew it was going to be creepy fun. I watched The Legend Of Boggy Creek recently. Funny that I remember it differently now then when I watched it all those years ago. It still has a chilling atmosphere. And I think this would be a good movie too.

The characters do everything wrong, even the ones who know what’s out in them woods. Sitting ducks, I tell ya. You have the the young adults, spending time in a cabin in the big old woods. There’s the creepy neighbor who drops ominous remarks about what might be out there in them woods. And then there’s the police officer who knows what’s out there and goes after it anyway.

Got the picture. Good. Everything goes to hell in a hand basket in no time. People are killed, there bodies mutilated or eaten. The big hairy dude is pissed off and hungry and the puny humans don’t stand a chance. I think you’d better bring a tank to take him down.

Some may not agree with my 4 star rating, so let me explain. I went into this story for some campy fun and lots of gore. I had no expectations of a deep, thoughtful story. So, I got just what I wanted. Ate it up and wished it was longer.

The Night Of The Beasts

by Eric S. Brown

The Night of the Beasts by [Brown, Eric S. ]

Genre: Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I’ve got several of Eric’s Bigfoot War books to read and when I spotted this little freebie, I grabbed it to see what I might be in for.

The hairy ones with the big feet come calling. Yep, there’s a slew of them and they tear through a town, maiming and killing everyone unfortunate enough to be there.

A security guard’s routine night duty at a hospital becomes more than he could ever have imagined as ambulances race to the emergency room, loaded with people horribly maimed. Reports are flooding in about a big animal, loose in the town, attacking anything that moves. But with so many injured, it can’t be just one, can it?

It’s no words wasted and complete chaos in these few pages. If you like em fast and furious with cryptids on the rampage, this could be one for you. Just keep in mind it’s a tiny story that comes from the world of Bigfoot War.

My Review

This would be a fun movie.

I love Sasquatch stories. Read a bunch of them.

A group of people head into the woods to film a reality show about Bigfoot. It doesn’t take long before he finds them. Or does he? Is it the stuff of legends killing them off, or someone?

It may sound familiar, but wait for it. Even though the story is short, the author spins it into one creepy read. And I can identify with the ending.

These three short stories were a bunch of fun.

Lots of action and some creepy stuff. You never know what you’ll bump into.

I highly recommended these for all of you lovers of the big furry guy. I liked them so much I’m going to grab Steve Vernon’s full-length Creep Squad novel, Big Hairy Deal.

My Review

I love a good zombie story. This isn’t a zombie apocalypse. It’s the story of one teenage girl, struggling with odd cravings and an escalating urge to commit violence.

I found some scenes disturbing on so many levels. And I loved it. I know, I’m twisted. But what’s a good zombie story without some truly ghastly scenes. Like when she eats the neighbor’s cat. Yuck.

I liked Grace. Felt sorry for her. And she scared the bejesus out of me. This made me wonder if I’d stand by her, best friend or not.

There’s a sweet romance beginning, but it doesn’t take over the whole story. It does add an important character to the mix and some lighter moments in between the gnashing and blood.

I was into this book from the opening to the finish. While there is an ending, there’s more to come. And I plan to see where this series goes.

A good one for zombie fans who want a more personal story, not an apocalypse.

Insects

27217066

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I must be a glutton for punishment. I just can’t resist when someone mentions man eating creatures. Especially the creepy crawling ones.
Imagine a bug that kind of looks like a cockroach. One of the big Palmetto ones. It is longer than your middle finger. Now imagine it’s not like any known insect. And it’s adapted. Changed. And we are now on it’s menu.
Then imagine you don’t know all this. Just that it’s a new species. You gather a team, go into the rain forest. And you find the insect.
And that’s where it gets ugly. Relentless. Kind of gory.
The forest works against you. The weather works against you. Your own fear works against you. And the bugs just keep on coming.
I had a scary good read with this book. And I’ve learned there are a couple more books in the series. Going to have to go see what happens next.

Death Catch

29595813

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I love zombie stories and anything that has killer sharks is alright in my book too. So, of course, I had to read Death Catch.

Zombie Sharks!

The saying, “No good deed goes unpunished,” sure fits this tale. After seeing fishermen slaughter countless sharks just for their fins, throwing the still living creatures back into the ocean to sink and die a slow, horrible death, one man does something to honor them. Thus the zombie sharks are born.

It’s a no holds barred fight to the finish as the sharks grow in numbers, bent on our destruction. And boy do they go at it. Flesh rips. Bodies are dismembered and crushed. The dead pile up. The sharks keep on keeping on.

A smorgasbord of characters carry the story to it’s end. A lot of them don’t make it. Some become unwilling heroes. And some just want some payback.

Death Catch is gruesomely fun. The suspense is intense. The writing is good. The plot is well thought out and researched. And the horror is top notch.

Here’s one for all of you who love your beasties mean and hungry.

The Gatherers

Harvesting #.5

by Ashley Ehlers

20574832

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I read The Harvesters, the first book in this series, and had an idea what I’d get with this one. Yep, a twisted story that had me looking over my shoulder, wondering who might be creeping up on me.

Coleen isn’t thrilled when her dad gets remarried. Not too crazy about her step-mother. And not too crazy about her step-sister, Virginia either. Or so the parents think. The two girls have grown close, very close. When Coleen is sent outside to find the missing family dog, the nice family getaway in the woods takes a chilling turn.

I enjoy scary stories. The scarier the better. And it doesn’t matter if I figure out the plot a bit early. The fun is what happens along the way.

I thought I had this all figured out, but I didn’t. There’s this twist, see.

Talk about your wicked step-mother tales.

And what’s waiting in the woods. I thought back to the first book, and no way would I go in there.

Another creepy tale that lingers, making you think about the evil that lurks just out of sight.

Synopsis

Ashley and Jason weren’t the only ones to have an encounter with The Harvesters that day….

Coleen hasn’t been the happiest with her father remarrying, especially to the mother that gave birth to her enemy, Virginia. Bleach blonde bimbo as Coleen thought the moment they started high school. However the parents don’t see it, as the girls put up a front, so they plan a getaway to the family’s cabin before the girls go off to college.

Being away from the city is exactly what the girls wanted. Virginia even has something special planned for Coleen on this holiday and being out in the woods is the perfect setting for it. Though things get put on hold when their family dog Trudy runs away and Coleen’s step mother insists she goes out and find her. Fing

My Review

What a fun little story.

Ulrich gets some really bad news. While his parents were in Africa, they were taken by some cannibals. Missing, and presumed eaten, he now has to live with Mrs. Lipstick, the families mean, chain smoking relative.

She says he’s a nasty, smelly boy and must stay in the cold, dark attic, only allowed out to eat once a day.

Alone and heart broken, Ulrich remembers his mother’s advice. Always stay positive and good things will come.

That’s hard for Ulrich when the strange noises in his closet reveal themselves to be a sock sniffing monster.

Ulrich is such a sweet boy. I forgot to mention he has a special disability. It’s very unusual but he stays positive and learns to adjust.

The nasty Mrs. Lipstick reminds me of Cruella DeVille from 101 Dalmatians. Just a loathsome woman and up to no good.

As for the monster, Fing, he grows on ya.

The moral of this story is maintaining good thoughts, staying positive despite the hard blows. The author had me chuckling at Ulrich’s problem solving and booing at Mrs. Lipstick’s evil doing.

A story to delight young readers with a worthy hero, or two.

Synopsis

Ulrich Von Strudel has got no knees, but this is the least of his problems. Awful, terrible, despicable things are going to happen to this poor boy. FING is a heart warming modern fairytale about the benefits of staying positive even when faced with the vile Mrs Lipstick!

My Review

A haunted tale of echoes.

Detective Mark Waters doesn’t believe the claim that The Depot is haunted. He’s eaten at the restaurant many times and never witnessed anything unusual.

So when he’s called there to investigate a suicide, it’s just another case. Or so he thinks.

The past meets the present and now Mark knows different.

Not a long story, but it has a lot of ghostly atmosphere.  You go back in time, then forward to the present, as the story is revealed.

Tragedy, betrayal, and a thirst for revenge, this a good one for a dark and stormy night.
