Genre:  Horror

My Review

I’ve come across similar scenarios to this one and they never get old. Amy Cross managed to put her own spin on it and creeped me out but good.

You might find yourself pulling for Laura once you get the skinny on how things really went down.

Kept me entertained and I sure liked the ending.

Ten years ago, they were all friends. Ten years ago, something terrible happened. Ten years ago, they agreed to take the truth about Laura to their graves. All they had to do was forget, and keep their mouths shut.

But when a hidden force starts cutting them down one by one, in a series of increasingly horrific incidents, the remaining friends are forced to face the truth.

Somehow, Laura has come back.

Laura is a horror story about six people who thought they could hide the truth, and about the girl who returns from the grave to make them all pay.

The Dog

The Dog by [Cross, Amy]

Genre:  Horror

My Review

It’s hit or miss when I read a book from a dog’s point of view. I’ve read several in this genre. The Dog was a hit.

The funny thing is how we can accept the death of a human during the break down of society, but the author kills a pet, that’dsa big no no. I was fretting throughout the book. Can’t tell you how Jon and his dog, Harry, managed but this was hard to put down and I didn’t throw the book after I read the ending.

Synopsis

One man and his dog come face-to-face with the end of the world…

When Jon takes his dog Harry to a remote cabin for the week, he just wants to get away from the rest of the world. And then one morning, after finding that his phone is dead, Jon looks at the city in the distance and realizes that something seems very wrong.

All the power has gone out. At night, the city is completely dark. There are no planes in the sky, and when Jon drives to the nearest gas station, he finds a desolate and bloody scene. He refuses to believe that something truly awful has happened, however, until he spots a figure stumbling through the forest, heading ever closer.

A figure that smells of death.

Soon Jon is facing a desperate fight for survival. While he and his dog have been up at the cabin, the whole world has been struck by a huge, global catastrophe that has left billions dead. Many are dead, but many more have risen again. Can Jon and his dog survive, or are they doomed to suffer the same fate?

The Dog is a novel about the end of the world, told through the eyes of a dog who finds himself stuck at a remote cabin with only his owner for company.

Alice Isn’t Well

Death Herself #1

by Amy Cross

Alice Isn't Well (Death Herself Book 1) by [Cross, Amy]

Genre:  Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

Yep, Alice isn’t well and she has good reason. I like stories where the character is considered to be not quite sane. It allows the author to do a lot with their characters.

I really liked Alice. I was sad that she questioned her own sanity but sure could see why. Wendy’s story takes place many years in the past. At first it’s sad and then it gets macabre. And Hannah is a piece of work. I think I liked how much she lived in her own skin and never doubted herself. She had a weird job and just accepted it and kept on doing it.

Their stories are told separately but then begin to merge and you finally are shown why. A solid story that I read in one sitting. And the author wrapped it up nicely while leaving it pen for more in the series. I’ll be following it.

Synopsis

“There are lots of demons in the sky above London. The problem is, this one came crashing down to earth.”

Ten years ago, Alice Warner was attacked and disfigured by an attacker in her own home. She remembers nothing of the attack, and she has been in a psychiatric hospital ever since. When she’s finally released, however, she starts working as a security guard at an abandoned shopping mall. And that’s when she starts to realize that something is haunting her, keeping just one step out of sight at all times…

Meanwhile, seventy years earlier, a little girl named Wendy is left orphaned after a World War 2 fighter plane crashes onto her house. Taken to a monastery, Wendy is quickly singled out by the nuns for special attention. They say she has been possessed by a demon, and that there’s only one way to save her soul. Fortunately for Wendy, however, there’s someone else who seems to know far more about the situation.

What is the shocking connection between Alice and Wendy, reaching out across the years? Does a demon really lurk in the girl’s soul? And who is Hannah, the mysterious figure who tries to help Wendy, and who seventy years later begins to make her influence felt in Alice’s life too?

Alice Isn’t Well is the first book in the Death Herself series, about a dark figure who arrives in the night, promising to help deal with the forces of evil whenever they appear.

Genre:  Horror

My Review

I read the blurb and thought it sounded like something else I’d read so I had to give this a go.

Creepy it is and I had a blast. Thought I knew what was really happening but I should have used more imagination. The author sure did.

A read  straight through book and one of those that makes you worry about turning out the lights.

Welcome to My Monday Minis Reviews where I share short reviews of books I’ve read. For today I’ll be sharing my reviews of four books from my TBR shelves.

Every Color Of The Night

by C. Yellow Robe

Genre: Horror / Apocalypse

29541343

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

If you like a new spin on something you’ve read a lot about, this will fit the bill. I stayed up late reading from beginning to end and still not quite sure what to tag these things as.

I enjoy an underdog, a compromised character with a lot of baggage. It’s my hope they can rise above their grief or self pity, redeem themselves. Especially in the worst of times. There’s more than one character to bond with, and don’t get too fond of any of them. The author is not afraid to take them out of the equation.

I’d recommend this to horror and thriller fans. The suspense builds quickly and then it’s all out action to the bitter end.

 Uninvited Guests Trilogy

by Victor Dark

Genre: Horror / Paranormal

28149492

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I grabbed this trilogy as a free download off Amazon. It’s a great way to discover new authors.

I’ll be reading more of Victor’s stories.

From the first story to the last, you are totally emotionally engaged. You’ll want to kick some character butt, reach in and shake sense into them. Tell them, hey, don’t you know the rules on how to survive a horror story. A lot of what they do is typical screw up stuff. You shake your head, wondering, why did the author give me the same old idiots.

But, wait. That’s how you get emotionally engaged with these characters. How you come to like or loathe them, wish them to survive or die horribly.

And what’s good horror without killing off some characters. It could be someone you loathe, or that one you are really hoping will make it. Lots of twists and no guarantees.

It’s creepy good reading and I’m planning on seeing what else Victor Dark has for me.

Listen To Me Speak

by Victor Dark

Genre: Horror

28524631

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

After reading and enjoying the author’s Uninvited Guests Trilogy, I had to give his next series a go.

It sounds familiar. Author gets writer’s block. Goes off by himself to some creepy house, hoping to find his writing mojo again. Instead, he winds up in something horrific,  gets scared shitless, does some stupid stuff, and maybe, just maybe, makes things right and lives through it.

Well, I’m not saying that’s what happens here, just giving you an idea of what might be in store for you. Mix together a haunted house, a seductress, and a married man with no hope, and you get a horror smorgasbord.

I had a fun with this one and the good news is, it’s a trilogy and I’m going to grab it and continue this story.

Psychopathia

by Kate Genet

Genre: Horror

My Review

Warning: This may appear to be the same old horror story about some idiots who explore an old insane asylum. Think again. And when you finish this story, don’t say I didn’t warn ya.

The dark suspense really did creep me out. It takes a lot to have me worried about what will happen in the next sentence, the next paragraph. You know what I mean? You’re brain is twitching, and you almost feel tired from wondering.

I was literally freaking out about these characters. What was happening to them. What I knew was going to happen to some of them. And what I feared was going to happen to them.

A lot of my fears came true. Boy, did they ever. Remember watching a scary movie, going to bed, and being afraid to turn out the light? You had to run across the room in the dark and make a leap into your bed. You pulled the covers up to your chin, and prayed you wouldn’t hear a strange noise coming from the closet or under the bed? That’s how I felt. Like a little kid, scared by a silly horror story.

Silly? Not really. It was all out scary and I couldn’t have been happier.

I was like a mad scientist when I read the ending. Rubbing my hands together, a wicked gleam to my eyes, a manic grin on my face, and cacklingly madly.

Synopsis

Everyone knows old insane asylums are the best place for ghost hunting – spooky, tragic, and with a pretty good chance of finding something that will go bump in the night. Even so, a ghost hunt is just an excuse for a good night out, a bit of a scare. A bit of a scare never hurts anyone, right?
Tully’s been watching a lot of paranormal investigations programmes lately, missing the mother who died shortly after her birth, so when her brother suggests they go look around an old asylum, she thinks it’s a brilliant idea. Her brother Toby doesn’t believe, and he doesn’t expect they will see any ghosts.
But there’s something there, all right, waiting for someone just like him to come along. It’s been there a long time, and it’s determined to hitch a ride home with them.
There’s a reason some people were incarcerated in the old asylums, and as it turns out, death doesn’t stop the insanity. It just makes it hungrier.

Shallow Graves

by Kali Wallace

My Review

Breezy wakes up dead. She has no memory of how it happened or why, one year later, she rose up. The dead guy she killed with her touch is a mystery to her. Why was he digging her up? Did he kill her? What did he want from her?

Breezy must hide what she is as she unravels the mystery of her death and why she came back from those who would shun her and those who want her for their own reasons.

No, Breezy is not a zombie. She doesn’t shuffle around looking for brains to eat. In fact, if she does eat food it makes her ill. I was intrigued by that. For most of the book, you have no idea how she came back or why.

And there are others out there. Like, but not like Breezy. This is where I got a flashback to Nightbreed. Great book and movie about beings of all shapes and sizes just trying to live and avoid being persecuted for being something other than human.

As Breezy learned more about what she was, I thought she handled it well for coming back from the dead. She soldiered on, determined yet scared, trying to hang on to the human part of herself. Read very genuine to me.

About those other beings. I’m pretty sure one was a werewolf, not too crazy about him. I did really like the ghoul brothers. Yep, ghouls. I know, they eat dead bodies. But they can’t help it. And they’re not grungy and smelly. You’d never suspect they cut up bodies in their bathtub and eat them.

A well woven horror mystery, Shallow Graves kept me up late, reading until I reached end. And the ending was a great wrap with up an opening to write more. Not sure if there will be a sequel or series, but if there is, I’ll read it.

Synopsis

Breezy remembers leaving the party: the warm, wet grass under her feet, her cheek still stinging from a slap to her face. But when she wakes up, scared and pulling dirt from her mouth, a year has passed and she can’t explain how.

Nor can she explain the man lying at her grave, dead from her touch, or why her heartbeat comes and goes. She doesn’t remember who killed her or why. All she knows is that she’s somehow conscious—and not only that, she’s able to sense who around her is hiding a murderous past.

Haunted by happy memories from her life, Breezy sets out to find answers in the gritty, threatening world to which she now belongs—where killers hide in plain sight, and a sinister cult is hunting for strange creatures like her. What she discovers is at once empowering, redemptive, and dangerous.

Debut author Kali Wallace interweaves folklore and myths from all over the world in this stunning novel about the heartbreaking trauma of a girl’s life cut short and her struggle to reconcile her humanity with the monster she’s become.
