Abominable

Genre: Horror / Science Fiction

My Review

Here’s how it starts. A strange capsule is discovered in the ice. After some testing it’s found to have been buried there for around thirty thousand years. Impregnable and mystifying, by accident they are able to see inside. Revealed is a huge white apelike creature. Once they crack the capsule, the fun begins.

First, I can’t resist a story set in uninviting environments, especially places like Alaska. Just to survive is a daily struggle. Next, a bit of science fiction. What is the capsule’s purpose? And is the creature inside from this planet, or somewhere else? And last but not least, a rampaging creature that doesn’t belong escapes. That’s B-movie chum for me.

I went into this expecting a bit of fun and I had a lot of it. I watch a lot of movies with this kind of plot and drew on them for some great visuals. Am I morbid that some of those bloody scenes made me laugh? Maybe, but that’s part of the fun.

Several years ago I read Smilodon, another book by Alan Nayes. It had giant sabre-toothed cats. Abominable was every bit as good.

Synopsis

A mysterious unidentifiable object is discovered buried deep in an isolated glacier in Alaska’s rugged Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. It is composed of materials unknown to science and the mystery only deepens when the large unidentified object is determined to be twenty-eight thousand years old. Who left it there so many thousands of years ago? Why?
Dr. Shelby Hollister, a specialist in primatology, is consulted when bones dug from the ice alongside the object are found to belong to an unknown species of prehistoric primate.
The story explodes in magnitude when the object begins a physical transformation revealing what is inside—a perfectly preserved giant ape!

ABOMINABLE. What happens when a giant Ice Age ‘Abominable Snowman’ escapes into the twenty-first century?

Congeal

by John F. Leonard

46638843. sy475

Genre: Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I love a scary good read, whether in large doses or in nibbles. Congeal is a small book with plenty of big scenes. One in particular was sad and I wished hadn’t happened.

How do I describe the plot. I’m thinking equal parts The Blob and Cloverfield, the movies. With some touches of John Carpenter’s The Thing. Whatever it is that oozes up from the bowels of the earth and seeks to consume everything on the planet is terrifying.

The author sets up the story quickly, brings the characters to life and then unleashes some wild scenes. Many don’t survive.

Take a look at the fabulous cover. That’s just one of the things you have to worry about with this stuff. Is it sentient? What will stop it? Can it be stopped? All questions I had to know the answers to. Did I get those answers? Some, yes. Some, I drew my own conclusions. And that’s okay. A good book should keep me thinking about if afterwards.

I was wrapped up in this immediately and could easily have read Congeal as a full length novel. Short stories are meant to be read in gulps and the author did a great job.

~~~~~
Synopsis
It starts with reports on the news of an inland lake turning semi-solid.
Surely, a media joke, some lame April Fool’s prank?
The before and after pictures are vaguely ludicrous and oddly disturbing, the contrast stark and strange.
First, darkly rippling water that hints at hidden depths. Slightly spooky and perfectly normal. Next, a putrid blotch of clotted sludge which bears little resemblance to anything aquatic.
It isn’t a joke.
And pretty soon, that greasy, sickening substance isn’t confined to an inland lake.
It’s spreading. Flowing over fields and filling streets.
Each morning brings a new revelation. Countryside denuded of life and towns empty and echoing.
The night is when it changes, becomes something that consumes. Something infinitely worse than a congealed impossibility.
CONGEAL is a short tale of apocalyptic horror. How the world ends may not be how you expect. Nuclear Armageddon or a zombie apocalypse could get beaten to the punch.
Our apocalypse may come from below.
An ancient, cosmic entity bubbling up to the surface in search of food.
It’s also the story of one individual and her fight to stay afloat in a sea of despair.
Dark Corner
by Brandon Massey
Genre:  Horror
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
Okay, I didn’t know exactly what this story was going to be about going in. I missed the clue in the blurb that mentioned something undead. When I found out what that was, I was thinking, oh no, not sure this book is what I was hoping it would be. About 8 chapters later I realized I didn’t want to put the book down.
Told from several points of view, you learn exactly what evil is hovering over the town. I think the multiple POVs made this story a richer experience for me. I really came to know the characters, to like them, to despair for them and, yes, to loath some of them. That goes without saying when evil comes out to play. Or bite you in the…..
I’d like to tell you more. Perhaps make some references to books and movies that came to mind while reading this, but why spoil things for you. I enjoyed Massey’s writing and how he had me wishing the one bad guy wasn’t so bad.
Genre: Horror / Short Stories
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
I enjoy short story collections. It gives me a fun way to sample the authors writing. From the synopsis and cover art I was expecting some pretty dark tales. They really weren’t. And of those offered, I’d say a few were good and some missed the mark.
I did enjoy the writing and would be curious to read some longer works by the author. Perhaps then I would get more involved in a story of his.
Not wowed but I’m glad I read these.
The Elle Reynolds Series #1
by Liz Schulte
17264717
Genre: Paranormal / Horror / Thriller
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
After the murder of her husband, Ella withdraws from everyone. Shuts herself away. But someone or something won’t let her heal. As time passes, she sinks deeper into grief and doubt. Is the house causing the eerie events? Or is it someone who wants to harm her? Or is she just going insane?
The author smoothly takes you back to past events and forward to the present, keeping you unsettled and clueless about what is real and what could just be in Ella’s mind. I couldn’t help but sympathize with her. She went through such a tragedy and now she fears she’s either haunted, stalked or crazy. Closing herself off from the world aroused suspicion with people that maybe she killed her husband. i wondered about that myself.
Of course, I read this at night. Read it straight through, my eyes darting to the dark corners whenever I thought I heard something. There are some really spooky scenes in this that made me question why I waited until dark to read it. I guess I wasn’t expecting to get scared as I read a lot of horror. But scared I got and I couldn’t stop. This reads like a ride on a tilt-a-whirl. It went one way then the other, jerking me from one conclusion to another. A dizzying, haunting story and so well executed.
I had this book on my kindle for several years before reading it. That won’t happen with the rest of the series. Yes, there are more books and I’ve got them lined up to read.
If you enjoy a scary, haunting story with a good mystery and some drama and thrills thrown in, I recommend you give this a go.
Welcome to my Saturday Screams where I share books that, well, make you scream!
Today I’m doing something different. Instead of sharing a review or two, I’m sharing some books for my Spooktacular Reviews that I did last year for Halloween. I share a review for a scary story each day of the month and I’m using some books from my TBR pile this year. This is my partial list so far, not including some ARCs and review books that I’ll be sprinkling in.
I’m also looking for suggestions, so lay em on me! I’m especially looking for some good werewolf, haunted house and creatures books.
Creature
  by Hunter Shea
38608020
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
Genre: Horror
My Review
I’ve read many of Hunter’s books. I’ve enjoyed some of his shorter work and several of his full length novels. While I’ve come to expect and eat up his campy horror, I was curious to see how this would go as it appears to be on the more serious side. I’m happy to report that he wrote something above and beyond what I could have asked for.
I couldn’t decide which was more horrific. The physical affliction that tortured Kate’s and Andrew’s lives or the supernatural one. It was very difficult to read about Kate’s quality of life. What those two struggled with each and every day was tough to contemplate. And Hunter took me inside each character’s head to reveal their brutally honest feelings of anguish, fear and resentment.  This made them live and breath for me.
When the supernatural element came in to play I reminded myself this was one of Shea’s books and braced myself for every which way but loose He’s quite creative at and willing to kill off any of his characters. It got very crazy very fast. And I loved the setting. A cottage tucked away in the woods. No neighbors for miles. The perfect setting for some scary stuff.
Be sure to read the Afterword Hunter Shea provides at the end of the book. It explains how he wrote his characters so genuinely and how difficult it was for him to write this book. It made me appreciate the story even more.
 Did I love the book? Yes. Would I recommend it? You know it.
The Haunted Forest Tour
  by James A. Moore & Jeff Strand
Genre: Horror
My Review
I had to catch my breath after reading this one.
Want some thrills? Take a tour of the haunted forest. It’s perfectly safe. Are the monsters real? You’ll soon find out.
The ride begins. Of course, one of the trams breaks down. I couldn’t wait to keep reading and my face grew a maniacal grin because I knew this was where the monsters would come creeping in. I swear, I will never go into the woods again without thinking of this book. It’s creepy, then it’s suspenseful, then it’s creepier, then more suspenseful, and so on. It doesn’t slow down but ramps up and up.
Every kind of creeping, crawling, flying thing you can imagine and then some are prowling the forest. Some want to bash you. Some want to eat you or drain your blood. Some just want to rip you to pieces. All of them want you dead. The party has begun and the lookie loos are the favors.
This was fodder for my horror appetite. I wanted crazy bloody mayhem and I got it. Did I love this book? Yes. Would I recommend it? Most definitely.
Today’s book is one I can’t wait to share. I’ve read most of Kathryn’s books and they never fail to keep me reading straight through until I reach the last word!
The Last Vampire
by Kathryn Meyer Griffith
Genre:  Horror
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
Kathryn never lets me down. Whenever I open one of her new books, I expect something that won’t allow me to be distracted from the story. Thus is the case with The Last Vampire. I honestly couldn’t pull myself away until I had finished it. And it was unlike any vampire story I had ever read. So many times I was asking myself what just happened.
The story starts after humanity has been brought to the brink of extinction. But they aren’t the only ones who’s existence is threatened. Those that drink blood to survive are also desperate. Vampires no longer hide in the shadows. They boldly hunt down and drain every last drop from the remaining humans. And these vampires are different. They have a secret ability that makes them even more deadly.
a vamp
I loved Emma. She was a survivor. Not only did she struggle against the elements and starvation, she also had to elude the blood thirsty vampires. Even though the future was bleak, she never gave up hope. I can’t count the times I yelled out loud, cheering her on or dreaded reading what was coming for her.
And those pesky vampires. They were much more than they appeared. I cringed at some of the scenes of carnage. They had a primitive yet rigid living arrangement. I tried to picture what they would look like. I came up with a cross between 30 Fays Of Night and John Carpenter’s Vampires. I dare say I probably wouldn’t have survived an encounter.
man,people,portrait,bald,dark,adult,serious,face
This needs to be made into a movie. It wisso visually written and filled with edge of your seat events. Just take a gander at that amazing cover. A perfect depiction of the story. I’d tag The Last Vampire as a horror dystopian.  If this is your thing, grab a copy. Plenty of surprises await and you’ll be entertained from the beginning to the haunting end.
My Review
I don’t even know how many times I’ve read this book and the rest of the series. It’s one of my go to books when I want to just relax and enjoy the story. Plus, I love anything sharks. Who doesn’t.
Jonas Taylor is one the best in deep sea submersible dives. When he’s sent down on a secret dive into the Marianna Trench, he barely makes it back alive. His claims that a Megalodon almost ended his life are met with derision by his peers and he sinks into depression. After years trying to prove he’s right and waking up screaming from freakish nightmares, Joans is compelled to once again brave the deep, and what happens next is worse than any nightmare he’s ever had.
Oh yeah, I loved this book. From the character’s, to the shark, and everything in-between, it was awesome. Steve is a wonderful storyteller and has you believing Megs do still exist. There’s much argument about that, which I won’t go into, but I choose to say, who knows? The ocean is the least explored place on our planet and new species are discovered all the time.
I myself, hope they do but, then I don’t. After reading books and seeing movies about Great White Sharks, I think they’re bad enough. For something that could use a 20 footer as a toothpick to arrive in our waters is truly terrifying.
Dive into MEG. Meet her up close and personal. Once the action starts, it’s a whole lot of gnashing and blood. If your a fan of sharks and horror, you’ll eat this up.
This one is from my bookshelf. My review is voluntarily given.
Synopsis
On a top-secret dive into the Pacific Ocean’s deepest canyon, Jonas Taylor found himself face-to-face with the largest and most ferocious predator in the history of the animal kingdom. The sole survivor of the mission, Taylor is haunted by what he’s sure he saw but still can’t prove exists – Carcharodon megalodon, the massive mother of the great white shark. The average prehistoric Meg weighs in at twenty tons and could tear apart a Tyrannosaurus rex in seconds. Taylor spends years theorizing, lecturing, and writing about the possibility that Meg still feeds at the deepest levels of the sea. But it takes an old friend in need to get him to return to the water, and a hotshot female submarine pilot to dare him back into a high-tech miniature sub. Diving deeper than he ever has before, Taylor will face terror like he’s never imagined. MEG is about to surface. When she does, nothing and no one is going to be safe, and Jonas must face his greatest fear once again.
Today I’m back with zombies and quite a different viewpoint about the apocalypse. I’ll be reviewing several books in this fun series. And great news! The first book is free on Amazon. Click HERE or on the cover to grab your eBook copy!
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
It was a dark and stormy night. Well, actually it was a quiet night. Riley was grousing about Ben-Ben’s piddle on the floor and the Yorkie’s constant whining about something outside. The quiet night soon turns violent when the dogs realize the humans pounding on the door wanting in are zombies.
Riley is a female American Bulldog . Solid in build and loyal to the family. Once she figures out what’s going down she dons her defense mode and goes to work. The pack, human and four-legged, must be protected.
But the zombies won’t be denied their meal and soon bust into the house. The man and Riley put up a valiant fight but the zombies have the numbers and those left of the pack that make it out of the house alive soon realize that they may have won the fight but its only the beginning.
Ben-Ben is just what you’d expect a Yorkie to be like. All nervous energy. He has these spontaneous bowel releases whenever he’s overexcited or scared. Which is often and hilarious.
The cat, Patches, is all cat. A superior attitude and thinks about herself first. She looks down her whiskers at the dogs and humans but knows as a group they stand a better chance of surviving. Zombies don’t discriminate in their munching. Animals go down just as easy as humans.
Two dogs, a cat, a young girl and an infant. All that’s left of the pack. Will they learn to work together? What does the future hold for them? I couldn’t wait to read further.
There’s plenty of zombie action. Bloody bits flying everywhere. As much as it was gory, it was also funny at times. The story is mostly meat, very little fluff, so the action is fast and furious. This works really well as you’re getting this story from Riley’s point of view. And there’s an ending, of a sort. This is one of four stories about Riley and her pack. I’m already listening to the second one and its proving to be every bit as fun.
 Read by Sean Runnette
Sean did a bang up job of telling Riley’s story. His inflection was good and I enjoyed listening to him switch from dog, to sarcastic cat, and back again. Glad he’s continuing to read this series.
Follow along as she tries to keep her pack safe from a zombie apocalypse. Traveling with her are Ben-Ben the high strung Yorkie, her favorite two-legger Jessie, Jessie’s younger brother Zachary, and Riley’s arch enemy Patches the cat.
