Bluewater Bay Promise

Book Excerpt

Meg stepped onto the beach and removed her sandals. She scrunched her toes and let them sink into the warm, grainy sand. Meg held the rolled blanket under her arm as she made her way to the shoreline.

Waves rolled in and out marking the shore with lines of foam.  Meg inhaled the salty air and smiled as the almost warm water washed over her toes.  She resisted the urge to wade into the bay and would dive in without question if she’d worn her bathing suit.

Meg made her way to a dry patch of sand away from shoreline and spread the blanket. She sat down, stretched her legs and leaned back on her hands. It was a light beach crowd which made it more peaceful than usual. She’d have space to think.

Meg pulled her water bottle from her bag and tipped it back for a drink. In her peripheral vision, she saw someone sitting about a hundred feet to her left. She turned, then smiled. Meg picked up her blanket and trudged over.

“Hey, Brandon, taking advantage of the weather?”

Brandon jerked his head up from his phone. His eyes widened in surprise.

“Meg, Hey what are you doing here?” Brandon’s voice squeaked.

“The same as you. I wanted to get in some beach time. It’s a gorgeous day.”

Brandon put his phone away and peeked around Meg toward the seawall. She followed his gaze, then down beside his blanket. A set of women’s sandals sat beside his flip-flops. Her chest tensed and she shifted her eyes to wipe them.

So, he’s not alone. It’s probably where’s his attention has been lately.

Meg pushed her shoulders back. No, she wasn’t going to make any assumptions. Besides, they weren’t a couple anymore and he wasn’t her problem.

“Are you here with someone?”

“Well, yeah, but you broke up with me, remember?” His voice was accusing.

“I was just asking. Anyone I know?”

Brandon shrugged. His shoulders hung near his ears from obvious tension.

“Relax, I’m not here to cause trouble.”

His eyes darted between Meg and something behind her. She turned again to see a young woman approaching. Brandon pushed himself up and brushed the sand from his hands.

“Ashley, this is Megan. Megan, this is Ashley.”

Megan’s eyes grew wide. It was the purple flower sweater girl.

Coffee and Crushes at the Cat Café
Furrever Friends Book 1
by Kris Bock
Genre: Sweet Romance

What do you do when you meet the guy of your dreams? Set him up with your sister, of course.

Kari doesn’t have time for love when she’s opening her new cat café. Renovating an old restaurant, hiring employees, fighting with the health inspector – oh, and welcoming 16 shelter cats – keeps her plenty busy. She’s doing this for the cats, the community, and most of all her family. The café will give her sister, Marley, a job worthy of her baking skills.

Then a tattooed military vet wanders in claiming to be a master baker himself. The café doesn’t need another baker, but maybe Marley needs a man. Surely she’ll fall for a guy this sweet, this sexy, this tasty.

Colin has other ideas. It’s Kari who makes him want to pour on the sugar and turn up the heat. But he’s spent the last two years recovering from physical and psychological wounds. Is he really ready for a relationship? He’s not even sure he should commit to Samson, the fluffy marshmallow of a cat who steals his heart.

The Furrever Friends Sweet Romance series features the workers and customers at a small-town cat café, and the adorable cats and kittens looking for their forever homes. Each book is a complete story with a happy ending for one couple (and maybe more than one rescued cat). These sweet romances will leave you with the warm, fuzzy feeling of cuddling a purring cat.

If you enjoy friends to lovers tropes, work romances, military heroes, and strong heroines completely failing at playing the matchmaker, check out Coffee and Crushes at the Cat Café. You’ll also find rescue cats with plenty of personality and their own desire for love.

Why do you write about a cat café?

I’ve noticed lots of sweet, small-town romance series involving dogs, but few with cats. I think it’s because dogs clearly bring people together – think dog parks, walking your dog, obedience training – while cats don’t.

Until you consider cat cafés. These are a relatively recent trend, but you can now find dozens and dozens of cat cafés all around the world. Typically they partner with a shelter, so all the cats you can visit are available for adoption. This gives visitors a chance to spend more quality time with the cats before they choose one. Those of us who can’t keep a cat in the home for whatever reason can at least visit some.

Are the cats important characters?

The Cat Café series features lots of shelter cats who live at the café while waiting for adoption. In each book, one or more find their permanent homes. Merlin appeared in the first book as one of many cats named. He quickly developed a distinct personality and became a reader (and author) favorite.

In Kittens and Kisses at the Cat Café, the lead characters start fostering five struggling kittens. Merlin escapes the main café room where the cats are supposed to be contained and makes his way to the office. He mews at the door until Marley lets him in and then jumps on the desk and into the box of foster kittens. As Marley notes, he volunteers to be a nanny. The kittens see him as their surrogate mama.

He finds his permanent home in book 3, Tea and Temptation at the Cat Café, but he still comes back as a regular visitor.

Do you have cats?

No. I’m writing a series about a cat café. But I don’t have cats. Huh?

I love cats. I have known cats and enjoyed them in small doses. But tragically, I am very allergic to cats, so I cannot let one keep me as a servant. (I’m getting allergy shots, so maybe that will change in the future. All hail our fluffy overlords!) In the meantime, I will write about a cat cafe, which gives me a chance to look at lots of pictures and videos of adorable cats and kittens.

Instead, my husband and I keep ferrets. They are similar to cats in some ways. When they play, they are as rambunctious as kittens. Like adult cats, they sleep most of the time. Princess Pandemonium (Panda) and Teddy Black Bear (Bear Bear) provide us with lots of amusement, snuggles, and cute photos for social media.

What was your journey to publication?

I wrote my first novel, The Well of Sacrifice, shortly after finishing grad school, while I was looking for work as a magazine editor. I loved books such as Julie of the Wolves and Island of the Blue Dolphins growing up and wanted to do a similar young adventure story. The novel is set in Mayan times, inspired by a summer I spent traveling through Mexico and Central America. Astonishingly, I sold the book! This gave me the mistaken impression that having a writing career wasn’t so hard. I have since written many novels that I haven’t sold, but I’ve managed to make a career of writing by focusing on more steady moneymakers such as educational publishing.

Around 2008, I was feeling restless and wanted a change. I had mostly been reading adult romantic suspense novels, so I started writing those under the name Kris Bock. Desert Gold follows the hunt for a long-lost treasure in the New Mexico desert. In Valley of Gems, estranged relatives compete to reach a buried treasure by following a series of complex clues. Whispers in the Dark features archaeology and intrigue among ancient Southwest ruins. In Counterfeits, stolen Rembrandt paintings bring danger to a small New Mexico town.

So I have over 80 published books now, but that includes fiction and nonfiction, for children and adults. The variety keeps me interested!

Where do you live?

I live in a small town in central New Mexico with my husband and our ferrets. I am a full-time writer, and my home office looks out on nature, complete with distracting wildlife such as roadrunners and foxes. I take breaks and use my BFA in photography to show Facebook friends how lovely the Southwest is. The only ways to get around are on foot or by car, but it’s such a small town that I can often walk to friends’ houses and rush-hour is less than five minutes.

What else do you have coming up for readers?

I’m writing a series with my brother, scriptwriter Douglas J Eboch, who wrote the original screenplay for the movie Sweet Home Alabama (yes, the movie starring Reese Witherspoon). Our new young adult comedy series features “Felony Melanie,” Jake, and their friends a decade before the events of the movie. It’s a lot of fun to work with a writing partner, especially one I’ve known my whole life.

Book 1 involved a beauty pageant with a mystery and book 2 had Melanie desperate to participate in the local demolition derby. We are now writing book 3, which involves a high school prank war. Readers called the first two books “Laugh out loud funny,” so I guess the fun we have writing it is coming through.

Find the first two books at Amazon US or other e-book retailers. You can check out the series for free if you sign up for our Rom-Com newsletter and get Felony Melanie Destroys the Moonshiner’s Cabin. These first two chapters from the novel Felony Melanie in Pageant Pandemonium stand alone as a short story. In the future, you’ll get fun content about upcoming Felony Melanie novels and other romantic comedy news and links.

Tea and Temptation at the Cat Café
Furrever Friends Book 3

Can two lonely people get a second chance at finding love?

Zach may be a best-selling novelist, but it’s been a long time since he’s felt truly alive. In the last six months, he moved to the country, his wife left him, and he was diagnosed with cancer. Now he lives in a haze of treatments, writer’s block, and simply trying to survive each week. But when a pretty woman comes into his favorite café and throws herself down on a padded bench with a groan of despair, he feels something he thought he’d lost long ago: curiosity.

As a veterinarian, Jenna knows both joy and heartbreak. The former she can share with her clients. The latter she keeps to herself. She learned one lesson from her ex-husband: Men don’t want to deal with your emotions. It’s odd to have a stranger ask about her problems. It’s even more of a shock when he offers to solve one of them by fostering the sick kitten abandoned by its owners.

Zach and Jenna bond over kitten care and build a close friendship. Could they have more? Zach is finally starting to hope for a future, ideally one that includes Jenna, but he can’t move forward until he’s dealt with his past. Meanwhile, Jenna is afraid to risk her heart on someone who might not survive the next few months.

The Furrever Friends Sweet Romance series features the workers and customers at the Furrever Friends Cat Café, and the adorable cats and kittens looking for their forever homes. Each book is a complete story with a happy ending for one couple. These sweet romances will leave you with the warm, fuzzy feeling of cuddling a purring cat.

If you enjoy friends to lovers tropes, or seasoned romance/mature romance, check out Tea and Temptation at the Cat Café. You’ll also find rescue cats with plenty of personality and their own ideas about love. This book contains no cheating, no people die, and no animal deaths are shown, although the vet mentions a few sad cases.

Furrever Friends Book 4

Can getting stranded in a creepy house full of abandoned cats turn these enemies into friends – or even something more?

After a rotten week, Holly jumps at the chance to go on a rescue mission. Dozens of cats are stranded in a remote house where the owner has died. They’ve been abandoned, and she can sympathize. But she did not agree to make the road trip with Dustin, her rival and biggest headache at the cat café where they both work.

Dustin has given up trying to get Holly to like him. Still, a long drive through a snowstorm and an overnight in a house full of cats might bring them together – or result in his violent demise. But what they find is worse than they ever imagined – no lights, no heat, the snow still coming down, and over twenty hungry, skittish cats. They’ll have to work as a team to survive and save the animals.

One thing is certain – if they make it back alive, their relationship won’t be the same.

Synopsis

Pointe shoes, tutus, and a snowy road trip with the man she hates. What could possibly go wrong?

The plan was simple. Get to Portland, dance The Nutcracker, and don’t murder your dance partner. And most definitely, do not, under any circumstances, fall in love with him.

A snowy road trip strands Elle Grant in a tiny cabin better suited for serial killings than rehearsals for two professional ballet dancers. With no one but the incredibly talented, excruciatingly handsome, and notoriously terrible Zachary Benson and a few taxidermy woodland creatures for company, Elle’s Christmas plans are officially ruined. Can she and Zach learn to like each other enough to dance together? And can Elle get home without losing her heart to the Christmas Cavalier?

I’ve been an elf, a tap dancing
reindeer, a teddy bear, a showgirl, the Virgin Mary, and Mrs. Cratchit. All for
the joy of Christmas onstage.

I’ve spent my entire life
onstage. Not like every moment of every day, but it’s how I spent all my free
time as a child and how I’ve made my living as an adult. The stage is my home,
the lights are my sunshine, and the cast is my family, even if only for the run
of the show.

Life under the stage lights is
glamorous but hard. And it gets hardest around the holidays.

Just like retail workers and
plenty of other professions, the holiday season is crunch time for performers.
I’ve performed on Thanksgiving for I don’t remember how many years, and on
Christmas Day for five out of the past nine years, and always far away from
home. Don’t get me wrong. I love it. I spend my Christmas Day performing for
either people who have nowhere else to go or who have theatre for Christmas
ingrained in their holiday traditions. (Thanks for keeping me employed,
theatregoers!)

But when you go to the Nutcracker
and see a performer from New York City that is there to lead the local ballet
company, that means that performer packed up her life, braved the elements, and
is trusting in the world that the show will turn out well. That her dance
partner won’t be a terrible human, and that when it’s all over the paycheck
will clear. It’s a life of tiny Christmas trees in hotel rooms, hoping you get
to see your family before New Year’s, and finding someone nearby to make your
Christmas merry and bright. No one wants to be alone for the holidays, even
those of us who live our lives with dance shoes and glitter.

And that is where the holiday
showmance comes into the picture.

In case you’ve never heard the
term “showmance,” it’s a romance that happens during the run of a show. You’re
away from home, living and working with the same people, in a profession where
you are meant to touch your co-workers, and emotions are bared under the
spotlights. It happens all the time. Two people come into a show, play love
interests, get close in cast housing, and fall madly in love.

Sometimes they end up married.
Sometime there’s drinking and sobbing when they break up on closing night.
Sometimes the rest of the cast takes bets to see which way a showmance will go.

But add in the romance of the
holidays—fireplaces, snow, and warm fuzzy feelings—toss in a dash of the normal
human desire to be with those you care for the most for Christmas, and you just
might have the makings of a Christmas romance. Or devastating heartbreak.

From tap dancing soldiers to
beautiful Christmas ballerinas, whomever you watch on stage this Christmas just
remember they are far from home for the holidays so they can bring joy to their
audiences. But don’t worry. It is, in fact, a glamourous life, and while the
stage lights bring warmth and beauty to the show, they can also bring a little
holiday romance along with them.
