Shiver me timbers, have I got a creepy one for you.

For today I’ll be telling you about The Whaler

by Steve Roach

1771e-addtogoodreadsblack

My Review

Set in the 1800’s, a time when whalers spend as much as two years on board wooden ships, harvesting the blubber and oil from their kills.

A young man seeking passage home enters a bar. While asking the barkeep about available berths, an old salt with one eye tells him he knows of a ship. It just so happens his son is a captain and will be setting out in a few days. While they wait for him to arrive, they get to know each other.

The young man is curious about how the old man lost his eye and he obliges. Thus begins the tale of Captain Grice, the cruelest, most vicious whaler known on the seas.

“The only time I ever saw him crack a smile was when he was knee-deep in whale blood.”

When the crew spots an old whale, probably already dying, they harpoon it. Then Grice does what he loves best. He jumps upon the dying whale and hacks and slashes at it with his ax until he can swing it no more.

This is no ordinary whale though. It harbors something deadly. Welcome to the belly of the beast.

The author did his research. I can’t imagine how awful it was. The stench of death, the hardship, the endless sea, no horizon in sight.

And he gives you a real villain in Captain Grice. The man was evil. He wasn’t like Ahab, obsessed with a single whale. He hated all of them and reveled in their suffering.

As the old man told the rest of this tale, I could picture the scene. The lights would dim, background noise would fade away, and his raspy voice would chill you to the bone.

Classic horror is what this is.

The Angel Connection

By Judith Anne Barton

1771e-addtogoodreadsblack

In this romantic thriller, mysterious convergences link two lives separated by 100 years.

In 1996, after her reputation, marriage, career as a TV journalist and relationship with her adult son, Chad, are trashed, Morgan Reed starts over in Milltown, Pa., a village in beautiful Bucks County. She feels drawn there, particularly to the 200-year-old former rectory that she buys. In 1895, Evangeline Laury, minister’s wife and mother to a small boy, feels stifled in provincial Milltown. She misses the cultured life she’d led in Philadelphia and her painting, especially when she learns that a local American impressionist, the charismatic Daniel Duvall, is giving lessons. As Morgan, with the help of her handsome but mercurial neighbor Victor, works on a documentary about 1895 Milltown, she uncovers more spooky parallels between her life and Evangeline’s. Both women, desperate for love and connection, are guiltily caught between competing attractions and responsibilities, whether for a husband, lover, child or work, and both women will experience the tragic death of someone close. In her debut novel, Barton writes lush descriptions of beauty and desire, with interesting historical details, many of which seem borrowed from real-life American impressionist painter Daniel Garber and his Bucks County studio at Cuttalossa Farm. (Black-and-white historical photos in the book go uncredited.) Though the narrative works to account for Morgan’s needy self-pity and Evangeline’s blind desire, readers might feel less sympathy than the writer intends, especially since other characters pay the ultimate price for the women’s culpability. In particular, deeply emotional Evangeline’s self-punishing guilt becomes internal melodrama. When Victor very reasonably objects to involving sullen, hard-drinking Chad on the documentary project, it’s a welcome moment of sensibleness: “It is not my problem to save your son.”

Emotional, doom-tinged and spooky, with two deeply flawed heroines.

My Review

Good girl falls for bad boy. Been there, done that.  How could I resist this book?

Summer is the good girl. Lives by her parents rules. She’s going to college to be a doctor now that she’s graduated. Everything is set.

Into Summer’s life walks Nate. The bad boy, the James Dean rebel. Living the free life, taking each day as it comes.

Nate makes Summer question her life. Are her plans her own, or her parents? What would it be like to throw off the good girl mantle and just do what she wants?

It gets interesting when Summer finds out why Nate rejects her. He wants a free spirit, not a baby bird, peeking out from under her parents wings. So, of course, Summer leaves the nest and sets out to show him she’s more than that.

This is the first book I’ve read by Jessica Gunhammer, and I very much enjoyed it. I remember what it was like to want someone so badly, I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I also fell for the bad boy, despite my family’s and my friends warnings. I got burned. You’ll have to read Straight Laced to find out what happens to Summer.

Being as the story is short, I feel like I’m just getting to know these characters. I hope I haven’t heard the last about them.

SYNOPSIS

Summer Jones seems to be perfect in every way. She’s always gotten good grades, graduated with honors and has never missed a curfew. So when Nate Thompson walks into Summer’s life, her whole world is turned upside down.

She envies everything he stands for; he’s wild, free and doesn’t have a care in the world. Not to mention he’s hot, has tattoos and drives a motorcycle. When Nate brings to her attention she’s too straight laced for him, she decides it’s time for a change.

She’s ready to start living the life she’s always wanted, but she’s scared to leave everything she knows behind and travel the journey alone. Will Nate be there to encourage her along the way? Or will the rebellion wear off and have her crawling back to her parents?

Nate’s always lived his life in the fast lane. He’s never wanted to be tied down and he doesn’t let anything get in the way of doing what he loves. That is until he meets Summer.

She’s everything he’s ever wanted but yet she’s everything he could never have. She’s smart, beautiful and on her way to the top. She’s way out of he’s league and he lets her know it, but yet he can’t seem to keep his mind off of her.

When Nate finds himself lying on the side of the road in the middle of the night, preparing himself for his last breath there is only one person that comes to mind, Summer Jones. He promises himself that if he makes it through this, he will do everything he can to win her over, but is it too late?

Synopsis

Annie O’Malley’s dream of owning a secondhand bookstore in tight-knit Audubon Springs is coming true. Still reeling from her parents’ sudden deaths, she believes that signs or messages can be found within the pages of books. She loves her job and has made plenty of friends but longs for the acceptance only love and a family can provide.

Tony Iuliano is there to fix the wiring in her shop. He doesn’t believe in fate, magic, or the power of a good book. All this combined with his sexy-as-sin presence and all-knowing attitude infuriates Annie. The quirky bookworm intrigues him enough to accept her bet to read a book from her shop. When he discovers a stack of fifty-year-old love letters in the book, he wants to leave the past alone, but seeing it as a sign, Annie challenges him to read the letters and search for the long-lost lovers or lose the bet.

While shaking the dust off several ill-fated romances and fighting their attraction at every turn, the pair soon become the town gossip daily special. If they can stop arguing long enough, they may just discover this particular sign was meant for them all along.

A glimpse inside Secondhand Romance

He glanced at the book she left on the counter and picked it up, weighing it in his big hand as if it were a foreign object. “I don’t get it. What is it about a book that so completely captures your attention?”

Annie’s eyes widened. A smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. “Hmmm, no, I don’t think so.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means I’m not going to try to explain this to a non-reader.”

A dark expression flashed across his face. “I read.”

“Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition and Playboy do not count.”

“I said I can read!”

“Calm down there, big guy. I’m sure you can read, but I own the only bookstore in town, and I’ve never seen you in here to buy a book. To my way of thinking, that puts you in the category of a non-reader, as in someone who does not read for pleasure.”

“Okay, fine. You’ve got me. Humor me. What is it about a book that completely grabs your attention, leaving your store vulnerable to theft and you to bodily harm?”

Annie regarded him through narrowed eyes, not entirely sure if he was serious or seriously trying to provoke an argument. She found both options interesting. Up until now, they shared very little in the way of one-on-one dialogue. The nature of this question indicated a certain level of contemplation he’d already given on the subject. “You’re not going to let that go, are you?”

“No.” He revealed just the slightest crack of a smile.

My Review
.

It should have been a normal day. Instead, Christian is attacked by an undead co-ed. He manages to escape unscathed, but not so his roommate. The campus is overrun with zombies and Christian can only think of one thing. Iris.

Iris is back home, 80 miles away, and unaware of the coming apocalypse. Christian’s plan is to get Iris and take her to his family’s farm. There’s plenty of food and weapons and all of the people he loves will be safe.

But planning and doing are two different things and a life and death situation had to be made.

When I realized the story was written from Christian’s point of view I was curious how that would go over. A woman writing from a males perspective had to be challenging, but the author nailed it. Christian’s thoughts and dialogue, even his reactions were all male.

I liked Christian, but felt he was a little too whipped over Iris. She’s not even his girlfriend. She’s dating someone else and doesn’t care for him that way. But he’s hopeful he can make her see him differently and young love is relentless.

As for Iris. At first I didn’t care for her one way or the other. I did start to know her, and by the end, I had a feeling I would like to know her better. She didn’t deserve the cards she was dealt.

There is a secondary character, Reno, who made a big impression. As this is the first book in the series, I’m hopeful Reno races back into the story later on.

For you zombie fans, there’s plenty of action and gore. There should be. This is a story about zombies, and they eat people.

But it’s also a love story. Young love, unrequited at the time, but that makes it all the more poignant.

I found myself not only hoping these characters would survive, but also hoping they would come together.

The ending is a cliff hanger, as I expected, with this being a series. It was a tough one too. I thought about it afterwards. Wondering what would happen, how could anything good come out of this tragedy, and one mystery that I needed an answer to. I’m looking forward to finding out.

Ocean’s Gift Review Tour

By Demelza Carlton

January 31 – February 19

Book Promotions by Literary Nook

       Ocean's Gift cover

1771e-addtogoodreadsblack

My Review

I like how the story is told from several points of view, particularly Sirena’s and Joe’s. I’m a huge fan of character driven stories and the author immediately hooked me with her well written thoughts and dialogue with the two main ones, Joe and Vanessa (Sirena). I got to know them well and the glimpses into their thoughts helped me make a connection, get to know their ins and outs and why they acted the way the did.

I was provided with necessary background and a history of the sirens, which I enjoyed. Sirens are often presented as water nymphs, tempting with their songs and then killing hapless sailors and fishermen. It’s nice to see them portrayed as having human qualities, a heart, as such.

Joe’s a reluctant lobster fisherman and Vanessa, well, she’s a siren. And she’s on a mission. All of the sirens are. Something is wrong in their home under the waves. With the ocean. And the sirens have split off into groups, posing as humans to gather information. Information important for their survival and the ocean. But what they are must not be discovered.

Of course, Joe and Vanessa meet and their attraction ignites. They share a liking for beer and each others body parts.

While there are sex scenes, they are light and more in fun than graphic.

Joe is sexy in his down-under humor and laid back way of living. A hard worker and intelligent, he’s also lacking. Lacking in the love department. He may think he likes a casual, love em and leave em relationship, but that may go by the wayside after he encounters Vanessa (Serina).

Vanessa, on the other hand, is a siren, and as such, she’s beautiful, a temptress to look at, and knows how to use her wiles. She may live most of her life under the ocean, missing out on the advances of technology taking place on land, but she’s a quick study, naturally curious, and finds herself liking a lot of human things, such as ice cream, beer, and Joe.

It was easy to switch from Joe’s perspective to Vanessa’s. The author did an excellent job giving Joe his voice. He felt all male and I wondered if she’d interviewed a few to get that psyche down so well.

The world the author built was captivating and rich, from how the siren’s switched to human form, to their intricate language, and to the ocean’s peril, which would affect all life on the planet. An environmental message is delivered in a fascinating, humorous romance.

Down under snark, an impossible romance, and our ocean’s deep mysteries. All comes together for a romping, intriguing story that keeps you laughing and thinking. I’m curious what comes next in this series.

Enjoy this glimpse inside Ocean’s Gift

The ocean gave him to me.

I was angry, as any girl of sixteen would be. I’d been ordered by my elders to go and find a strong man, one I could join with to produce a healthy child. My hopes, my dreams and my plans were of no consequence. My destiny was to entice a man to choose me as his plaything – to be a piece of flesh to bait a shark. Or to be a baby seal, tempting a killer whale? The example did not matter. The end would be the same – the end of my control over what had been my life.

I swam in the storm, revelling in the power of the waves, which pushed a little wooden sailing boat through the maelstrom on the surface over my head. Two men struggled to control the small craft with two wooden oars, the vessel’s only means of propulsion once the sail was torn away in the wind. One man dived from the boat, slicing into the water like a knife surrounded by bubbles. There was a line of twisted fibre in his hand as he swam with difficulty for shore.

The little boat rocked in reaction to the diver’s spring. The wind caught the remnants of the sail, a big wave washed over the side and the vessel tipped under the surface, sinking slowly. I dodged through the debris as it drifted in the current away from the little boat.

The surface above me churned where the second man had been thrown into the water. He thrashed around and it was clear he could not swim. The waves pushed us together and he clung to me, his arms warm as he wrapped them around me. I gave him my breath and took him to the surface. As we drifted between the waves, still he would not let me go.

He called me his Lady of the Sea, his angel. I gave him my breath again, before I dove under the waves with him.

We surfaced near a small island of sand, washed by the waves. Here he would be safe.

He shivered, in wet clothes on wet sand. He called me Santa Maria, his Lady of the Sea who had answered his prayer.

If I was to save him, I had to keep him warm. Yet I had no human accoutrements, nothing warm or dry with which to assist him. Only me.

I concentrated on my form, letting my tail part, my skin pale and my gills fade. To save this man, I needed to be human.

Or as close as I could be.

He kissed and clung to the naked human girl by his side, who could think of only one way to warm him. He kissed my lips and my blood responded with a wave of heat, akin in power to the waves of the storm on my body.

We warmed one another, as the storm and the waves raged around us. He clung to me even when exhaustion claimed us.

When I awoke, the storm had dissipated. I could return this man to his people and he would live.

Whilst he still slept, I carried him through the water to the island where his kind lived. Yet in the deep water there were sharks, attracted by the man’s blood.

Mine.

Leaving him floating on the surface, I charged the sharks, shouting my claim to drive them off. It came to blows to drive the last one away, before I could return for my human.

Yet he was not on the surface when I returned. The water in his clothing had dragged him down, into the deep where he could not breathe. I gave him my breath, over and over, in a poor, cold imitation of his ardent kisses, yet I could breathe no life into his body.

The ocean gave me this man, his life to save, then stole his breath even as I tried to save him. The man who called me an angel, Maria, as he loved me for a storm.

I cursed the islands, for they were cursed already. I would not go ashore on these wretched rocks, to conceive a child to take back to my sisters in the deep. No child conceived in such bitterness would survive inside me to be birthed at the Nursery Grounds. So I resolved to tell my elders, when I returned to them.

I cannot carry a child for you. Even the ocean is against it.

In a sea of rebelliousness, the girl he called Maria was lost, as I turned tail and dove deep.

The book description:

Sirens don’t fall in love with humans. For centuries it has been so…

But Sirena is different. She lost her first love to sharks and a storm, cursing the islands that stole him from her.

Times have changed and she must swim ashore once more, to the islands she once cursed.

Gone are the boats powered by sail and steam – jet boats with GPS are now the order of the day.

Enter Joe, the deckhand on the Dolphin. A handy man to have around when the lights go out. He’ll fix your generator and have the lights back on in no time, no worries.

But can he seduce a siren?

Or will she swim away before he can uncover her secret?

A book about lobsters, beer and boobs, on some cursed islands off the coast of Western Australia. At least, that’s how Joe tells it.

For Sirena, it’s a very different story.

A tiny taste of what’s in store:

The boat was almost full of water now, I realised in panic, as I groped for a bucket to start bailing. Throwing bucket after bucket overboard, I couldn’t tell if I was making any difference to the water level in the boat.

One moment I was holding the bucket, about to scoop up more water, the next I was flying through the air. Immersed in cold, black water, I couldn’t see the surface. I struggled, kicking in the direction I thought was up, and hit a rock. I jerked back reflexively and my head cleared the water. I gulped a huge lungful of air and grabbed for the rock. I had to hold on ’til daylight.

Another big wave broke. I tried to keep hold of the slimy rock, but I was pushed out of reach, drifting in the current. I tried to kick my legs, but I wasn’t sure if I did. I couldn’t feel my feet and the numbness was creeping up my legs.

I could hear the breakers on the outer reef, louder than they were from shore. I could feel the spray on my face. A wave washed over me and I was under the water again.

I thought I could feel someone beside me, rolling me over so my face was at the surface, pulling my body through the water.

All I could hear was an unearthly singing, high and sad, like some kind of suicidal dolphin. I could say I blacked out, but everything was already so black I wouldn’t have noticed the difference.

I checked out of Hotel Consciousness. At least I got to dream of Vanessa naked.

Author biography:

Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish.

She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray-drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below.

Sensationalist spin? No – Demelza tends to take a camera with her so she can capture and share the moment later; shipwrecks, sharks and all.

Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world.

The Ocean’s Gift series was her first foray into fiction, followed by the Nightmares trilogy.

My Review

This romance story starts in tragedy.

Marisa was 11 years old when she lost her family and found sanctuary with her foster family. It was hard for her to adjust and she was plagued with fears and bad dreams.

One thing gave her peace. A picture of her foster mothers nephew, Joshua. He was not much older than her and she kept his picture under her pillow, creating a fantasy life with him.

Marisa is a young woman now and she’s going to spend the summer with Josh and his daughter, Bethany at his ranch She’s finally going to meet her dream man. The man she’s been in love with for so many years.

Will fate make her dreams come true, or will it end in folly?

There are two meanings in the title, Joshua’s Folly. One is the arbor Joshua built for his daughter. A beautiful floral garden, a place to sit and take in mother nature and play safely.

flower gardens photo: FG42.jpg

The other folly you’ll discover when you read the book.

This is a simple romance, with a few complications, mostly insecurity and fear of being hurt again.

Once these three start to get to know each other, they all come out of their shells, connecting and emerging from their cocoons.

I particularly liked the breakfast debates they shared. One of them chose the topic and debated it until a winner emerged. Lively conversation and laughter was good medicine for all of them.

I also thought Marisa’s food fetish was funny. She could mix together the most unlikely combinations and eat it with relish, while Josh and Bethany looked on in horror. Made me laugh and wonder what it tasted like. Was it good, or was she just a good actor?

The romance is sweet and the characters trying to mesh as a family and heal together was charming. I’m keeping my hopes up for these guys.

This is a great summer read for by the pool, or in keeping with the weather, an easy to follow story to read while snuggled up with a hot cup of chocolate.

Synopsis

Can you fall in love with a picture?

After Marisa survives a traumatic experience in her youth, she finds comfort in the form of a photograph of Joshua, her foster mother’s nephew. She falls in love with him, creating and refining an image of the man of her dreams. When Marisa has the opportunity to visit Joshua’s cattle ranch outside of Amarillo, Texas, she meets Joshua in person for the first time. She quickly realizes he is someone she could really fall in love with, not just a silly childhood crush.

Life is seemingly perfect for Josh and Marisa, with endless possibilities before them. That is, until Josh’s reservations take a toll on their relationship and their summertime romance ends rather unexpectedly.

Will Marisa be able to forgive Josh for his folly?

Get to know Tallent and Lowery, their journey, and the author that is writing their story!

The Hero’s Companion
.

.

Leah Tallent and Gareth Lowery have seen it all, utilizing everything they have to survive. But now, Leah’s father has gone missing and they have only seven days before he’ll be killed. The only clue to follow is a picture of one of the most famous icons of all time, and a strange map hidden in her father’s desk. This new mystery will take them from the pinnacle of the Acropolis to the depths of Cleopatra’s caves in order to unmask the man who has a score to settle.

In a location that’s been buried under rock for centuries the battle will begin, and the team will have to face the one foe that will expose secrets and unleash unheard of power in order to get what he wants. ‘The Hero’s Companion’—the one woman who will do anything to make sure the right side wins, will fight the good fight; but without Gareth, her time may just run out.

Enjoy this peek inside The Hero’s Companion

Leah dropped  her head in her hands as tears of frustration and fear ran down her cold cheeks.  She had no idea what she and Gareth would be walking into when they pulled up in  front of her childhood home. Her father was everything to her, and Leah could  not even fathom what happened to him. He was so kind and had so many friends—who  on Earth would possibly want to hurt a man like that?

She tried to calm her ragged breathing and turned to  stare at the love of her life. Except for a jaw that was clamped tight, Gareth’s  face was expressionless. Leah knew he was feeling the pain and agony that was  washing through her soul. After all, they were a part of each other. They’d  stood before both Heaven and Hell together and then, Leah laughed to herself;  the relationship had really gotten interesting.

As if he could feel her intense study, Gareth turned his  face and smiled at her. Leaning over, he kissed Leah on the lips; his cold hand  squeezed her own trying his best to warm her with his love. “Everything’s going  to be okay, you know.”

“Always the optimist,” she said with a smile. “I’m sorry  . . . I’m sorry you got into this.”

Sitting back against the seat, Gareth’s eyes filled with  confusion. “There is no place I’d rather be. Besides, if you remember correctly,  you saved my sister. You saved her . . . friend.” Stuttering over the final  word, he stared out the window.

Leah snorted, “They’re married now, Gareth. I think you  finally have to accept the fact that Emmanuel is your sister’s husband.”

When the large, ‘manly-man’ winced at the dreaded ‘H’ word, Leah almost burst into laughter.

He shook his head, erasing the idea that his baby sister,  who would always be a preteen at the most in her big brother’s eyes, was  actually a woman now. “What I was I saying?” Closing his eyes, he muttered, “Oh,  yeah . . . you also saved me, Leah  Tallent . . . years ago. And together, we will most certainly figure all of this  out and save your father.”

Leah threw her head back against the seat and let loose a  frustrated sigh, “But, save him from what? I don’t get any of this, Gareth. My  father is just a boring businessman.”

It was so dark in the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut.  There were no stars, no moon—only the all-consuming blackness met her gaze. Leah  took a deep breath, fighting the fear that was raging inside her soul. “It’ll be  just fine. We’ll figure everything out once we get there,” she whispered to any  entity that was listening and then allowed her normal calm, controlled persona  to take over.

The Head Librarian of Research at the New York Public  Library took her rightful place, basically shoving the scared little girl out of  the way. The card catalogue in Leah’s brain sprang to life, as she searched for  any information buried in there that could better help her to  understand.

Frustration weighed like an anvil on her chest when she  came up with nothing. There were no images from the past that would lead her to  believe someone she’d once met was now holding the power to end her father’s  life.

As her brain continued to swirl like a tornado causing  havoc, all Leah could hear was that perky stewardess announcing the fact that  Tallent and Lowery were, indeed, beginning their descent.

Although what they were descending into was anyone’s  guess.
