Welcome to My Monday Minis Reviews where I share short reviews of books I’ve read. For today I’ll be sharing my reviews of four books from my TBR shelves.

Every Color Of The Night

by C. Yellow Robe

Genre: Horror / Apocalypse

My Review

If you like a new spin on something you’ve read a lot about, this will fit the bill. I stayed up late reading from beginning to end and still not quite sure what to tag these things as.

I enjoy an underdog, a compromised character with a lot of baggage. It’s my hope they can rise above their grief or self pity, redeem themselves. Especially in the worst of times. There’s more than one character to bond with, and don’t get too fond of any of them. The author is not afraid to take them out of the equation.

I’d recommend this to horror and thriller fans. The suspense builds quickly and then it’s all out action to the bitter end.

Synopsis

Like a gallon of milk forgotten on the counter and left to curdle, Ken’s life is going sour. The loss of his wife and daughter, entirely his fault, has left him shattered. In the face of such pain, he’s turned to the temporary solution many others do: liquid salvation. It’s all catching up to him. Life seems as if it cannot get any worse.
And then … the world comes to an end.
The newly wakened evil that comes next proves that some things are even worse than the apocalypse. And these things only come out at night …

 Uninvited Guests Trilogy

by Victor Dark

Genre: Horror / Paranormal

28149492

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I grabbed this trilogy as a free download off Amazon. It’s a great way to discover new authors.

I’ll be reading more of Victor’s stories.

From the first story to the last, you are totally emotionally engaged. You’ll want to kick some character butt, reach in and shake sense into them. Tell them, hey, don’t you know the rules on how to survive a horror story. A lot of what they do is typical screw up stuff. You shake your head, wondering, why did the author give me the same old idiots.

But, wait. That’s how you get emotionally engaged with these characters. How you come to like or loathe them, wish them to survive or die horribly.

And what’s good horror without killing off some characters. It could be someone you loathe, or that one you are really hoping will make it. Lots of twists and no guarantees.

It’s creepy good reading and I’m planning on seeing what else Victor Dark has for me.

Synopsis

Alan Walter’s marriage has fallen apart. It all started when the Walters moved into their new dream home. For months, they heard creaking noises in the attic, tapping on the walls and the opening of cabinet doors. His wife swears that there’s an intruder living in the house. But Alan didn’t believe her. And he didn’t discover the truth until it was too late.

Now, three years later, it’s happening again to a single mom and her two young children.
And Alan won’t let history repeat itself. Not if he can help it.

As Alan investigates the case, he uncovers a conspiracy twenty years in the making. He comes face to face with an unspeakable horror that will change his life forever. Soon enough Alan Walters will realize that if these walls could talk, they would be screaming.

Listen To Me Speak

by Victor Dark

Genre: Horror

28524631

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

After reading and enjoying the author’s Uninvited Guests Trilogy, I had to give his next series a go.

It sounds familiar. Author gets writer’s block. Goes off by himself to some creepy house, hoping to find his writing mojo again. Instead, he winds up in something horrific,  gets scared shitless, does some stupid stuff, and maybe, just maybe, makes things right and lives through it.

Well, I’m not saying that’s what happens here, just giving you an idea of what might be in store for you. Mix together a haunted house, a seductress, and a married man with no hope, and you get a horror smorgasbord.

I had a fun with this one and the good news is, it’s a trilogy and I’m going to grab it and continue this story.

Synopsis

After the success of his first novel, John Krik has struggled to come up with a follow up that his fans would eagerly gobble up. On a spur of the moment decision, John leaves his suburban married life to spend six months in an abandoned house in the quiet eerie town of Cafeville, where secrets lurk in every corner. The town’s biggest source of gossip is the Greens who live right next door.

As John attempts to put his finger on what it is about the house that has everyone steering clear, he finds himself captivated by the seductively charming Eva Green who is as dangerous as she is irresistible. A gruesome story begins to take form in his mind. As the lines between fiction and reality become blurred, something sinister emerges from the shadows and demands to be heard.

My Review

Warning: This may appear to be the same old horror story about some idiots who explore an old insane asylum. Think again. And when you finish this story, don’t say I didn’t warn ya.

The dark suspense really did creep me out. It takes a lot to have me worried about what will happen in the next sentence, the next paragraph. You know what I mean? You’re brain is twitching, and you almost feel tired from wondering.

I was literally freaking out about these characters. What was happening to them. What I knew was going to happen to some of them. And what I feared was going to happen to them.

A lot of my fears came true. Boy, did they ever. Remember watching a scary movie, going to bed, and being afraid to turn out the light? You had to run across the room in the dark and make a leap into your bed. You pulled the covers up to your chin, and prayed you wouldn’t hear a strange noise coming from the closet or under the bed? That’s how I felt. Like a little kid, scared by a silly horror story.

Silly? Not really. It was all out scary and I couldn’t have been happier.

I was like a mad scientist when I read the ending. Rubbing my hands together, a wicked gleam to my eyes, a manic grin on my face, and cacklingly madly.

Synopsis

Everyone knows old insane asylums are the best place for ghost hunting – spooky, tragic, and with a pretty good chance of finding something that will go bump in the night. Even so, a ghost hunt is just an excuse for a good night out, a bit of a scare. A bit of a scare never hurts anyone, right?
Tully’s been watching a lot of paranormal investigations programmes lately, missing the mother who died shortly after her birth, so when her brother suggests they go look around an old asylum, she thinks it’s a brilliant idea. Her brother Toby doesn’t believe, and he doesn’t expect they will see any ghosts.
But there’s something there, all right, waiting for someone just like him to come along. It’s been there a long time, and it’s determined to hitch a ride home with them.
There’s a reason some people were incarcerated in the old asylums, and as it turns out, death doesn’t stop the insanity. It just makes it hungrier.

Some chit chat.

Hello everyone and Happy Sunday!

Hey ya’ll! I t’s been two weeks since I last did a Sunday Post. Took off last weekend to spend time with the family and wouldn’t you know it, I got bit by a spider and the weekend got cut short. Had to go to urgent care when the swelling and pain got too bad for me to handle. Three shots and a couple of prescriptions later, I’m still recovering. The pains gone but the swelling is persistent and still can’t bend my arm all of the way.

You’d think after all of these years, I’d have built up some immunity to spider bites. Instead, they get to me more than they ever did when I was young. LOL

Aside from that mess, not much new has happened. Got some fun plans with the family and been reading like crazy. I’ll have a bunch of reviews to share next week. And a bunch of giveaways too so be sure to watch for them.

I mentioned before that my email got hacked. I’m still way below what I should be receiving in my inbox. If I follow you and you haven’t heard from me on your posts for a while, give me a holler or you can leave your blog link in the comments here. It appears when my email was fixed, I lost a bunch of people I follow. I don’t want to miss out on your stuff, guys, so anyone who wants to, please leave a link to your blog so I can follow you!

I hope you all have a holiday fabulous weekend!

I’ll be hopping over to check out your Sunday posts so be sure to leave me your link.

Megan Tayte

Once upon a time a little girl told her grandmother that when she grew up she wanted to be a writer. Or a lollipop lady. Or a fairy princess fireman. ‘Write, Megan,’ her grandmother advised. So that’s what she did.

Thirty-odd years later, Megan is a professional writer and published author by day, and an indie novelist by night. Her fiction – young adult romance with soul – recently earned her the SPR’s Independent Woman Author of the Year award.

Megan grew up in the Royal County, a hop, skip and a (very long) jump from Windsor Castle, but these days she makes her home in the village of Standish, Greater Manchester. She lives with her husband, a proud Scot who occasionally kicks back in a kilt; her son, a budding artist with the soul of a palaeontologist; and her baby daughter, a keen pan-and-spoon drummer who sings in her sleep. When she’s not writing, you’ll find her walking someplace green, reading by the fire, or creating carnage in the kitchen as she pursues her impossible dream: of baking something edible.

Excerpt:

I let the pulse of the music coat me and mute my surroundings. A mass of people crowd the dance floor of the club, and I sit on an abandoned couch in the corner. The lights beat at the air in blues and greens, and bodies twist and merge to the thunder. I lean back, close my eyes, and try to get lost in it, the smells and sounds of people and their collective high.

Something moves next to me. I look over to find a girl sprawled on the seat beside me, trying to catch her breath. She’s not dressed in the usual club gear, more like a girl who got lost on her way to a beach party: Hurley T-shirt, jean skirt, and red Converse. Her cheeks are flushed pink; her throat and forehead glitter with sweat. She glances at me like she didn’t know I was there. She licks her upper lip, her eyes not leaving mine. Then she says something I can’t hear.

I point to my ear and shake my head.

She smiles and laughs, lighting up the space around her. She rests her hand on my arm, like we’re friends and I just told her the most hilarious joke, and then she gets up and disappears into the mass of bodies again.

My arm tingles, my body reacting to the moment of contact in a sudden and disconcerting way. I think I’ve had my fill of watching people indulge their baser instincts. I need to get out of here.

The beat of the music speeds up, vibrating faster as I move through the crowd. I try not to touch anyone, which is nearly impossible. All the emotions and appetites are overwhelming, as if the rising rhythm of the music makes their yearnings rise, too. Lust buzzes in the air. A hunger stirs in me, a gaping hole, needing to be filled. With touch.

The touch of female fingers. A hand on my arm, taking my wrist, pulling me into the fray, into the pressing bodies. And I don’t try to escape. I let her take me.

Because I’m tired.

Because I’m a dumbass.

A girl moves in front of me—not the Hurley girl, not the one I was hoping for. She presses closer, so close I can almost taste the salty perspiration on her skin. She has thin, birdlike shoulders, a swan neck, a heart-shaped face, and black hair, long and tangled, turning blue and green with the light. Her hands slide up my chest. She wraps her arms around my neck and tilts her head to look up at me.

Her lips are full and painted dark purple. There’s a dimple in her left cheek that gets deeper with her growing smile. And her eyes . . .

Fog fills my head for a second, interrupting my thoughts.

“Hi,” she mouths, calling attention to her lips again.

And then she’s rising up on her toes, pulling me down to her, twisting her fingers in my hair, her lips smashing against mine.

My body buzzes from her touch, and my hands react, drawing her into me. I drink her in. She tastes like the air around me, hunger and urgency, and—

Green apple Jolly Ranchers?

I grip her sides, her ribs so delicate beneath my fingers. The sweet tang of her teases me, the hunger becoming a monster deep inside. I have to press her closer, tighter, try to feed it, as I feel the fire of her need link with mine.

She pulls back a little and looks at me with wide eyes, like she’s shocked. That’s when I see the mark, a glowing, blue-inked line of what looks like Chinese symbols, trailing down the nape of her neck to her shoulder blade. Symbols that I’m suddenly sure mean: touch this girl at your own risk.

It’s the only thing I see for a second: Beware. Beware.

Until her energy reaches for me, wispy tendrils of blue light wrapping their way around my wrists and snaking up my chest.

I jerk away, into the guy behind me, stepping on his girlfriend’s toes. I get shoved— thankfully farther from the hypnotic girl—through a space in the crowd, saying a hundred excuse-me’s even though I know no one can hear them. I find my way out of the press of bodies to the edge of the room again where it’s safe.

It’s time to leave. I should’ve left an hour ago.

CHAPTER ONE

San Francisco, California Territory, June 1849.

Sensibility sat cross-legged upon her bed and tried not to think. She tried not to think of the ache where her stays pinched her back. She tried not to think of tomorrow’s journey across the American wilderness. She tried not to think about the clamor of banging drums and tootling fifes and—

“Oh, good gad!” She clenched her fist, pieces of quartz crystal biting into her flesh. Sensibility sprang from the bed and threw open the boarding house window. Oppressive heat, acrid from the nearby outhouse, rolled into the room. Wrinkling her nose, she leaned out over the fenced back yard and craned her neck. The afternoon sun streamed through the laundry, hanging limp on the line. From her position, she couldn’t see the street procession. But neither could she avoid hearing their blasted parade.

Something scuttled near her elbow, and she jerked away, slamming her head on the window frame. White pain arced through her skull.

A baby raccoon, not much larger than the palm of her hand, cowered on the other end of the narrow sill. It scrabbled, hunching into a tight ball, trapped on the high ledge.

“Ow.” She winced, rubbing her throbbing head and glad her chignon had taken the brunt of the blow. “How on earth did you get up here?”

The raccoon mewled.

“You shall have to make your own way home, for you cannot come inside. Mrs. Watson has a strict rule about animals inside her boarding house.”

Gently, so as not to disturb the creature, she shut the window. The raccoon peered over the ledge then looked at her, his expression plaintive.

Attempting to ignore the animal, she paced the denuded room, her brown skirts swishing.

They had ample space to swish. Nearly all her belongings lay compressed into a single carpetbag, set before the empty wardrobe. The bedroom had an air of abandonment.

Unsettled, Sensibility rattled the quartz crystals in her hand and glanced to the window.

The animal stared inside, forlorn.

She tugged at her collar. It was such a small thing. But rules were rules. “You found your way onto the ledge. You can find your own way down.”

Sensibility turned to the journal open on the desk. Her sketch of an unworldly creature she’d once encountered scowl from the page. Frowning, she slammed the book shut. It had been careless of her to have left it open. Strange, she couldn’t remember examining the journal before she’d gone downstairs to retrieve her luncheon.

The crystals pressed into her palm. She was so close to a breakthrough in aether technology, but the clues remained buried. Buried in the remains of her father’s last journal. Hidden in a journal from a traveling occultist. Scattered throughout her own notes and theories. One day soon, she would fit those pieces together. It was madness to hope she could solve that problem today.

Sensibility opened her hand and gazed at the quartz crystals. She’d mastered the use of aether to power small devices. But aether had other applications, such as distance control and distance vision. These applications eluded her. “There has to be a way…”

She glanced at the window.

The animal raised itself on its hind legs and pressed its tiny black paws to the glass.

Sensibility groaned. “I know I’ll regret this.” Pocketing the crystals, she opened the window.

The raccoon cowered.

“You,” she said, “being a wild animal, will attempt to bite me if I rescue you. But I will have none of it. I shall pick you up, I shall take you outside, and you shall neither bite nor scratch. Do you understand?”

In a swift motion, she grasped it by the scruff of the neck and lifted it inside. It writhed, and her grasp on it loosened.

She gasped. “Don’t….”

The raccoon dropped to her desk and shook its head. Whiskers twitching, it scuttled to her abandoned luncheon tray and made free with a bit of toast.
