Welcome to The Friday 56 hosted by Freda’s Voice.
This is a really fun meme!
The only rules are to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader and find a sentence or a few (no spoilers) that grabs you and post it.
Then go over to Freda’s Voice and leave your link so we can visit your 56!
My 56 for this week is from:
The Nature Of Balance
by Tim Lebbon
Genre: Horror / Apocalyptic
From Page 56 in the paperback.
The field flows by like a golden sea in a gentle breeze. The horse’s hooves swish through the crop, throwing hazy clouds of dried stalks and stems into the air behind it, leaving a smoking trail across the field.
I love this description. When I’m galloping on horseback across a rolling field, it feels like we’ll take flight at any moment. Glorious!

Synopsis
One morning, the world does not wake up. People lie dead in their beds, killed by their own nightmares. They’re lucky. For the few remaining survivors, the new world is a confusing, terrifying place. Things are different now. The balance of nature has shifted. Mankind is no longer the dominant species — it is an intruder, something to be removed, destroyed by an Earth bent on vengeance.Blane is a man on his own in this world gone mad. He has no distant memories, only the vague certainty that something momentous has happened in his past. Fay is enigmatic, dangerous, a dark witch and a player of gruesome games. What roles will they play in nature’s new era? And will they be able to survive long enough to find out? Will anyone survive?

There’s some stuff going on that is unexpected. I always like the surprises.
This sounds like one of those books that would definitely make great movie if done correctly and well. It might also make a cool graphic novel, like the Walking Dead. I have a couple of friends who like the horror genre that I might recommend this to. Thanks for sharing!
Especially a graphic novel! This gets dark, weird, and a bit gory in places. Some strange things are happening that I wasn’t expecting.
This one sounds great – I’ve read a couple of Tim’s Lebbon’s fantasy offerings and really enjoyed them. How gory/creepy is it? I’m such a wuss, I get nightmares if I read anything too scary:(.
Well, the pretty scene I used for the teaser…it gets pretty gruesome. I’d say not one for you, Sarah:)
That’s really a great description. Sounds like a good book.
That scene was great. Then it changed into something else. LOL
Great description but the synopsis makes it sound too creepy for me. I hope you are enjoying it. I’m reading The Elizabeth Papers by Jenetta James this week. Happy reading!
Yeah, it gets really dark after this scene.
This sounds like an interesting book – thanks for visiting my my Friday meme earlier
It caught me by surprise. Should have been prepared as I’ve read books by this author.
Interesting cover and 56! Love the descriptive writing! Happy Thanksgiving weekend!
It’s got what I wanted, for sure!
Love the imagery in the excerpt. I feel the frightening world even as the horses gallop through the fields. Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog. Enjoy!
You’re right on. As the horse keeps galloping, some pretty scary stuff starts happening. Especially as it nears the trees.
Neither the cover nor the title made me think horror. Hope you are enjoying it.

If you’ve read any of his other books, you’d probably deduce it’s horror. I get what you mean about the title and cover. The old cover would probably give it away.
Such great description. I love it when descriptions evoke such imagery. It makes me wonder if the character is running from something (since it’s horror), although I suppose if one was being chased, they’d want to be lower key. Anyway, happy reading!

My Friday 56/Book Beginnings
I don’t think the character knew what would happen when she mounted that horse. It gets pretty bad the further they run.
This sounds super intriguing! Here’s hoping it’s just as good a read as it sounds–thank you so much for sharing with us!
Happy book-ing to you in the near future! Here’s my Friday 56 if you’re interested in checking it out; no pressure or worries if you’re not, though! Stay rockin’, and happy Friday!
If you like horror and weird, this is a good one:)
LOVE the description in the opening. I’m curious about what caused such a terrible disaster and how the characters overcome it … at least I hope they do!
My Friday post features KEY LARGO BLUES.
The further in I get, the more curious I become about their survival.
What a catching cover. I’ve never ridden a horse. They kinda freak me out. lol
I used to ride every chance I got. Don’t have the opportunity to do it anymore. My son loved it too and took some lessons.
This sounds really good – thanks for sharing!

It’s pretty wicked!
I absolutely love the sound of the F56, it flows so beautifully! And damn that synopsis hits all the right spots as well, no? Thank you for stopping by my blog and sorry for the late return 😀
