From Page 56 in the paperback.

The field flows by like a golden sea in a gentle breeze. The horse’s hooves swish through the crop, throwing hazy clouds of dried stalks and stems into the air behind it, leaving a smoking trail across the field.

I love this description. When I’m galloping on horseback across a rolling field, it feels like we’ll take flight at any moment. Glorious!

 Title: Rain Must Fall

By: Deb Rotuno

Publication Date: October 28, 2016

Publisher: RR Books

Cover Designer: Coreen Montegna

Genre: Zombie/Post Apocolyptic

Jack Chambers was all the way across the country—separated from his family—when life as he knew it came to a screeching halt. A virus straight out of a horror movie has been unleashed, turning friends, neighbors, and family members into a walking nightmare. Jack must fight to make his way back home to his wife and son from Florida all the way to Oregon in a world that is determined to kill them all.

Sara Chambers considered herself to be a strong-minded military wife and mother. When her husband is called away for temporary duty, she never thought that her quiet, small-town life would be turned upside down. Following her husband’s frantic instructions, Sara must protect their son, Freddie, and the last remaining members of the small town of Sandy, Oregon, and get them somewhere safe, get them to the one place Jack told her to take them—their cabin at Clear Lake.

The world is no longer safe. It’s kill or be killed. With the odds stacked against them, Jack and Sara fight to not only survive but to hold on to hope that their family can be reunited even against such incredible odds.

Deb has been married to her husband for going on 14 years. They’ve always had rescued pets, and at the moment, they have 4 cats.

She was born and raised in central Florida. She loves the warm temperatures. She’s worked in retail for almost 17 years, but if she were able to do anything she wanted, she would be a full-time reader, writer, and fur-baby mom.

She has always been a big reader, and writing was something she started late in high school, but she began to dabble in it again once she discovered fanfic in 2009. Since then, she’s read and written plenty in her spare time, especially since she cannot watch a TV show or a movie without thinking about how she could write a story like it.

Aftermath

Book 1

Joe Reyes

30148847

Genre: Young Adult Post-Apocalyptic

Publisher: Wasteland Press

Date of Publication: April 29, 2016

ISBN: 1681111128

Number of pages: 284

Word Count: 79, 722

Book Description:

Aftermath is a growing series about war, love, brutality and most of all, survival. What was once the United States has become a savage post-apocalyptic environment where the worst of the worst prosper and the remaining good hide.

The series features a brutal setting, where seven characters in different parts of the United States must adapt to this new environment. The “fight or flight” mentality plays into the story, as the nation is divided into factions fighting for control of the country. The government is outnumbered, outgunned, and forced into hiding as well to recoup their forces. The novel follows a fast paced momentum from the first page to the last word. The plot pits these characters against the elements and each other, with plot-lines intertwining on opposite sides of the war effort. And one character’s quest for revenge can jeopardize not only the war outcome, but the reshaping of the entire nation.

With an ever-changing storyline and evolving characters, the Aftermath series gets more intense with every chapter. But what these characters don’t realize, the terrifying evil is making its way across the ocean.

Enjoy this Excerpt: Sara

“People and beans again?” a raggedy-looking man says as Sara passes him a plate. He glares down, disappointed, at the meal of perfectly cut human flesh and a side dish of green beans. Sara hands out more plates to the group of men huddled around a fire.

“When you guys kill something other than people, you’ll get something else to eat,” she says with a sarcastic smile, walking off.

It’s near-insane to talk back to these guys. They are psychotic killers, but she is protected. Marcus, their leader, has taken a liking to her. So it’s a choice of be killed, be raped and then killed, or be his willing sex slave.

Sometimes she doesn’t know if she made the right choice.

Before going back to the kitchen, she stops by every group to see if they all have something to eat. Dozens of groups gather around, having their breakfast. The field is littered with dirty men and women feasting on human remains.

Probably over a hundred in total, she guesses.

The Savages is what they are called. The group started after the bombs fell about five years ago. They were small at first, but they’ve since grown into a much larger army. This gives them better resources and a nice cut of whatever they take from towns.

All they do is kill and raid villages. They swoop in, kill, take everything, and leave. They take in recruits, sometimes, if they seem to fit the part. The survivors don’t last long. They are usually killed and displayed as a message to discourage others.

For years they tried the whole nomad lifestyle, but when the army got bigger, they realized they had to settle down.

It’s a lot easier than constantly uprooting the whole camp.

They have no reason to leave. There are always animals in the forest. A river provides fresh water and fish. Armies are too afraid to attack them. They can’t survive an all-out military assault, but the government has much more important enemies than them to worry about.

They all wear custom-made armors consisting of materials they find on the road. Sports gear is a big part of it: elbow pads, football pads, helmets—anything they can find. A lot of it is hand-sewn and made from animal skins.

The farm would also pose a problem for moving. Horses are bred and domesticated as transportation. Without cars and without gasoline to run them, they are a necessary component of life here.

Each Savage has the brand of an S on the back of his or her shoulder, indicating initiation into the group. It is given after their first kill. After a big massacre and initiation, they will celebrate with a great feast: their victims.

Sara never likes thinking about how many people one dead body feeds. The thought makes her sick. The taste has always bothered her. She may force herself to eat flesh when she absolutely must, but she is and always has been a vegetarian . Even when they spruce it up with spices and other ingredients, it is still a person, and no amount of sauce can change that.

Sara’s stomach starts to rumble. She hasn’t eaten much in days. Usually, she is able to sneak extra beans and vegetables because the others love flesh, but the shortage of them is now beginning to hit her.

Hopefully, Penny can get me something, she thinks, walking into the large kitchen tent. The sight doesn’t help her appetite. Penny is in the middle of carving someone up.

“Three years of culinary school and I’m making foot filet for a hundred ingrates,” Penny mocks as she hacks off a foot with a butcher’s knife.

Sara feels sick again. She covers her mouth to hold the vomit back. The smell of blood is too much.

“Aww, sweetie, not feeling good?” Penny says affectionately, walking up to her. She doesn’t get it, her shirt is covered in blood and it’s making Sara sicker, but she needs a hug.

“New necklace?” Sara asks, seeing a piece of the metal chain falling from Penny’s shirt.

“One of Eric’s men gave it to me.” A gold snowflake hangs from the end, surrounded by pretty little stones.

“Which guy?” Sara asks.

Penny’s face betrays her disgust. “The creepy looking one with the cuts.”

The kitchen tent is filled with people preparing food for the group. There’s a huge fire going, and the bodies are put on a metal gate over the fire to barbeque. The Savages know that uncooked flesh can kill them. They are as smart as they are ruthless. That’s why they’ve been around for all five years.

 “You hungry?” Penny asks.

Sara shakes her head. “He’ll probably make me eat with him later.”

Penny sighs but says nothing. They both know what Marcus is going to do to her. Sara will have to eat flesh again, among other things. Penny doesn’t like the idea of eating people either, but she is a chef and can trick herself into thinking she’s eating something else. With all the spices she’s schooled in, it’s almost easy.

Everyone who doesn’t like it has ways of coping, but most of the Savages love the taste and the trophy. Eating the very people they killed makes them feel tougher. Sara would be the first to admit the taste of it isn’t bad, but that freaks her out the worst.

“You smell nice today,” she says from Penny’s arms, covered by her blonde hair.

“I found some shampoo. I’ll give you some later tonight,” Penny says with a smile. “Now come on, you have to bring the men food. The meeting’s starting.” Penny releases her, only to hand Sara a tray of appetizing human parts and vegetables. “How do I look?” Sara inquires.

Penny adjusts a few out-of-place strands of hair on her head and smiles. “You look great.”

Welcome to my tour stop for Origin by Corrie Brundage, the first book in The Eaters trilogy. This is an adult science fiction and the tour runs June 6-July 11 with reviews, interviews, guest posts and excerpts. Check out the tour page for more information.

My Review

In the not too distant future. Dr. Mina Brice and Dr. Jack MacConell are the happy couple. She’s dedicated to saving animals from extinction in a world where their habitat is practically gone. Her ability to link her mind to animals is a treasured gift.  He’s dedicated to saving humans. A chance to work together seems like the ultimate dream, until a tsunami washes it all away.

Mina awakens 500 years later to a different world. Origin is a city run by alien beings. After the initial shock of discovering she’s actually a clone, Mina begins again. She’s reunited with Jack and she’s going to be working with animals again. The future looks bright. Until…

Until something starts attacking her team. And soon, these beings start entering the city, attacking at will.

After reading the description for this book, I knew I had to read it. Clones, aliens, and dangerous hybrids in a futuristic world. What could be more exciting.

Mina quickly won me over. She took it in stride when she discovered she was a clone, grabbed her new life by the reins and charged forward. It took guts to do that and I couldn’t have been happier when she found Jack again. They are wonderful together.

The aliens. I’m not sure what to make of them. They seem to be good. They clone us to save our race, our world. Everyone has a job, a purpose. No one goes hungry or homeless. It’s almost too good to be true. I’m sure Mina thought that when she discovered she’d be working with animals again.

And then the bad things come. The author gives you these terrible creatures. I loved it. I know. I must seem morbid. Can’t help it. I’ve always loved stories with  scary creatures in them. I couldn’t wait to see what kind of monsters the aliens came up with. And I wasn’t disappointed.

So much happens in just 260 pages. The author did a superb job of showing me the world she built, connecting me with her characters, and scaring the pants off me.

I’d recommend this book to all who are looking for an adventure with some science fiction and horror mixed in. It’ll grab you from the get go and sweep you along to an amazing ending. I loved how it ended, and how the author left a little window open so she can continue with her world and characters.

Synopsis

So not your usual post-apocalyptic, clone vs. hybrid romance-adventure…

Brilliant, brave, determined, and just a little bit…distracted.  Meet Dr. Mina Brice, dedicated savior of species, and scientist with a secret. On a planet ravaged by climate change, her ability to mind-meld with earth’s imperiled beasts has made her a valued member of a team dedicated to saving as many as they can from extinction.  Unfortunately, Mina’s inability to connect with her fellow humans has kept most of them at arms length. Except for Jack—handsome, dashing-with-a-touch of goofy, totally distracting Jack. Dr. Jack MacConnell was never supposed to be part of Mina’s gameplan.  But when thrown together on a crazy-dangerous mission, both fate and a deadly tsunami seem determined to propel them down the same fraught—and occasionally delicious—path. Perhaps forever?

But forever turns out to be a fluid commodity when both awaken 500 years into the future in a city called Origin. Presided over by aliens known as The Travelers, it is a world at once familiar and totally strange. And for Mina and Jack, it will become a battleground…against a hybrid race of predators loosed on the human population, against those whose dark side is so very carefully hidden,  and even, as fate throws a heartwrenching twist their way, against…each other?

Corrie Brundage kicks off The Eaters trilogy with an intoxicating tale of pulse-pounding action for fans of urban fantasy and science fiction to devour and savor.

Welcome to my Saturday Screams where I share reviews of all things scary.

For today I have a some good ones from my TBR that I’ve been wanting to share. For the past two weeks I’ve shared the first four episodes of Marilyn Peake’s zombie series, Mutation Z.. Check out One and Two HERE, and Three and Four HERE. This week I’m sharing books five and six, the final two.

Book Five

My Review

Hunter puts his disguise to the test and it works. Good thing too. He escaped getting blown to smithereens when he went to a clandestine meeting in the middle of nowhere.

The information he received was so horrifying, yet it was detrimental to all of their survival. It looks bad and the virus can only keep spreading.

I’m still surprised by how much can happen in each of these short episodes. The conspiracy keeps getting deeper and uglier. And it’s so easy to believe it could happen. Big Brother is a bully.

What’s happening with the zombies will turn your stomach. Maybe they aren’t human any longer, but how they’re dispatched is truly evil.

As the world crumbles, many people die. How could it be any other way. I was saddened, though I knew it could happen.

I’m having a hard time clinging to hope for the characters and the world. The next book was just released and I’m ready to see where the author goes with this.

Zombie horror, big government, a little bit of science fiction, and some modern cyber twists. Too good to pass up.

My Review

I almost didn’t want to start this one as it’s the final book and I didn’t want it to end.

I wondered who would survive, if they’d find a cure, whether the world could be saved. I didn’t have a clue how all of my questions would be answered.

The author did a bang up job of doing just that. She gave me lots of endings for lots of characters.  I got a pretty good idea of what would happen with the bad guys. No real surprise there. It’s happened that way for a lot of them in real life, so it felt right. And I learned what would happen to the world.

Curious about how she would handle the two kinds of zombies, she explained that too.

All that and Marilyn still found room to throw in some sea pirates. Not bad at all. Nothing felt rushed or disjointed. It all flowed easily to the end.

I hope you get a chance to read this series. I’d recommend you try the first one. If it’s you’re cuppa tea, grab the rest. The price is right and you’ll be able to zip through them without pause.

My Review

Holy crap!

Just when you think things can’t get any crazier, they do. This is one intense series. I loved the first two books and this one is just as good, if not better.

Don’t count on your favorite characters surviving. I read this episode knowing anything could happen. But I wasn’t prepared for how things would go down.

And what’s this about protecting the zombies? What could be the motive behind that, I wonder.

Hang on to your butts, people. This is a boat load of trouble with an ending that will rock you to your core.

I don’t see how the author can make this series any more horrifying or emotional, but we shall see.

And this series gets even more intense.

The beginning grabs you, yanks you into Hunter’s nightmares, and gives you a little reprieve before sending you back into the horror.

After the horrific loss Hunter endured, I didn’t see a happy ending for him. I’m crossing my fingers things get better, but don’t see that in the foreseeable future. He’s on the run, hunted for what he knows. Desperate measures must be taken.

Well, the author did it again. Kept me tearing through this episode, cringing, cheering, and hoping.  Mutation Z is like zombie M&Ms. You can’t read just one and keep reaching for more.

The Ebola Zombies

Book One

by Marilyn Peake

23247491

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

Did someone say zombies? I can’t pass up a zombie story.

The apocalypse has already begun and it’s spreading quickly. Probably not the best time for a young lady like Emma to go to the front lines of the plague. She just graduated from nursing school and is looking for some adventure.

From the moment she arrives, she knows something’s wrong. Before long her fears are confirmed as horrific events unfold.  Now Emma is in for the fight of her life, literally.

Wow.  Powerful writing whisks you away, drops you into a dirty, steamy camp in West Africa, and bombards you with conspiracies, horror, and real life characters who could walk off the pages.

What goes on in the camp, after dark, hidden, is beyond imagining. Imagine the threat of Ebola. Now add in disease carrying zombies. A dark twist.

Though this is a short novella, it made a huge impression on me. Loved it and I now have the other five books on my kindle. The first book was free and the others were priced at a bargain I was happy to pay.

It’s run by the CDC and the World Health Organization, and protected by the U.S. military. Emma uncovers a secret about this facility: medical experimentation is being conducted along with treatment. Whether or not Emma can ever escape the camp, she’s determined to get the story out. She has intimate knowledge of a biological horror being secretly unleashed upon the world. NOVELETTE. Closing The Borders

Book Two

By Marilyn Peake

26256391

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

If you read the first book, you probably thought it was horrific. Wait until you read this second one.

The author drops you right into the story. Even after mutilated bodies are found on the borders of Mexico and the US and they begin closing it down, journalists are allowed to investigate the scenes.  What they discover are horrors beyond their worst imagination.

Flash to West Africa and Emma. She’s still at the camp, still unable to leave, and not sure if she should. As she digs deeper into the conspiracy, she’s crushed by what she’s done, what she might become.

Hope arrives in one Hunter Morgan, a journalist chasing a story. When his young daughter becomes ill, he’ll do anything to get to the bottom of it.

Imagine knowing you’re turning into a zombie. Knowing what you’ve done. I can’t think of anything more horrifying. Be warned. The author gives you graphic details. Lots of gore. Maybe I’m morbid, but that’s what I wanted, and that’s what I got. Being a huge fan of The Walking Dead, I can handle it.

More conspiracy and corruption abound. I wonder how bad it can get. A zombie army?

This second book is as intense as the first one. And the addition of new characters and the spread of the disease build the suspense to a fever pitch.

I’m so glad I already have the next four books so I don’t have to wait to continue.

In a world where a virus has spread turning most of the population into flesh eating monsters, there are two friends partying it up in New Orleans when the infection hits. Excerpt

We were all doomed to be food for the worms’ sooner or later. Why not end it now? I could hear growling coming from the crowd; some had started to lightly bang on the fence. They didn’t realize they were powerless to knock over their obstacle with their decaying arms like dried tree branches. But they were powerful enough to take down this world; the irony was almost too much.

Dead, infected people owned this place now. They marched into the streets like all armies before them, except they didn’t discriminate. We were all fair game. All races, all colors, all genders. We were all equally screwed.

I slid down the rough outside paneling of the house, resting my head in my hands and wept.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

  1. D. Iverson is young author trying to find her niche in the world. She has a business degree; to which she is still trying to find a practical application for. She has bounced from half-baked ideas of becoming a forensic pathologist (cut short when the option for attending an autopsy came up and she rather quickly decided maybe that wasn’t for her), a member of a rock band (sadly, neither her nor her friends could play instruments or sing, not that it’s a requirement these days…) and many more.

This Would Be Paradise is her first completed book, which has started a chain reaction of one-too-many book ideas dancing around in her head. She plans on wrangling in these ideas and making full fledged books from them. So keep an eye out on the horizon for more works to come!
