My Review

I really enjoyed, Empath, the first book in this series, and Pulled, the shorter story about a side character, so I knew I’d enjoy Outsider.

Josh feels like an outsider. His friends and sibling have special abilities, but so far, he has none.

Hiding behind his shyness and low self-confidence, he just knows he’s meant to be special, but nothing has changed. Now out of college, he waits, hoping his ability will appear, hoping to be special like all the others.

Things do change when Alex moves in with his sister. He really likes her. Figures she has a special ability too. Now he really feels left out.

What does the future have in store for Josh? Will he ever gain a special ability? Will he ever get the girl? Will he ever be special?

I felt for Josh. I could see where his low self-esteem came from. It seems everyone around him has a special ability and he’s just plain old Josh. As the story develops and a very nasty villain sets his eye on Alex, he really came into his own.  The author let him grow, mature, become self-confident and brave, even without any abilities.

And Alex was a pleasure to meet. She had some spunk, but missed her friends back home. Moving away from home was never a question, but she was unsure if she’d fit in with this new place and new friends.

There was a sweet romance brewing too. Josh was crushing on Alex. Alex was crushing on Josh. Neither knew how the other felt. Neither felt confident enough to act on it. Made from some tender and funny moments.

And the villain is truly despicable. Ethan can hypnotize with his eyes. He uses it to con people out of their money and possessions, with them never remembering him. How low is that?

A botched attempt on Alex leaves him furious and bent on revenge. He’s planning something terrible and getting closer.

While you could read this before reading the first book, I’d recommend you read Empath first so you would be familiar with the plot and characters. There are some old ones and new ones in this story.

The ending was heart pounding and very satisfying, but it wasn’t the end. There were questions to be answered and a lead on where the story was going next. I felt there were dangerous times ahead for these characters and will be waiting to see what happens.

A special Excerpt

AUDRA MEETS ELI

The state prison that housed Eli Shelley was nearly forty-five minutes away from the small town of Specter, Georgia. Eric Neil must have caught the edge of her mood as he refrained from speaking to her for the entire duration of the trip. When she parked in a visitor’s spot and took the key from the ignition, Eric reached over and placed a calming hand over hers.

She looked at him gratefully. He smiled and winked. Without a word, they exited the car. Audra dispensed with any notion of pleasantry as she impatiently flashed her badge at everything that attempted to talk to her until she was placed in a small room with Eric to wait for them to produce Eli Shelley.

When the door opened, Audra was taken aback by what she saw. If the triplets had been hard to tell apart five years ago, there would be no mistaking one for the other now.

Eli had beefed up in prison. He was at least two hundred pounds of steel muscle, and his tall frame made every ounce of him more intimidating than Audra had anticipated. He had the same dark hair and eyes as his brothers, and she could see the resemblance in the shape of his nose and the set of his mouth, but that was where the similarities came to a screeching halt.

His hands and legs were bound with shackles. A guard, no more than half of Eli’s size, escorted him to the table. He helped Eli take a seat, and hooked his shackles to a lock on the floor.

Eli smiled as if the visit were a welcome surprise. Audra slapped her badge on the table, and the smile fell from his face. The guard stood in the corner to the right.

“Leave,” Audra said.

“But, I have to watch,” the guard began.

Eric grabbed the guard by the collar and pushed him out of the room. “We’ll call if we need you.”

“What happened?” Eli asked.

“Gwyneth Miller was murdered,” Audra said flatly.

She watched as the giant of a man shackled in a prison uniform wilted right in front of her.

“How?” his voice was authoritative but still barely above a whisper.

“We can’t explain how, but her windpipe was crushed by an unknown force.”

“What do you mean force?” Eli questioned.

“That is as much as I can tell you,” Audra said and watched him get angry. “I’m here about Abigail Stevens.”

“What about her?” He looked down and swallowed.

“We recently found a letter from you to her that was unopened.”

“So you think I must have killed her,” Eli stated.

“Did you?” Eric asked.

“No.” Eli looked at Audra when he answered. “I loved Abigail. After all we’d been through…” He allowed a smile as charming as his politician brother’s to touch his lips. “She was a spit-fire.”

“What can you tell us about her?” Audra sat back to read his body language as it relaxed while he conjured up memories of Abigail Stevens.

“She was skinny,” he began. “It was the first thing I noticed about that girl when I was in high school. She was so damned skinny. I wondered if she ever ate. She wasn’t nothing but twelve I guess, and a pretty easy target to pick on cause she was one of those poor kids of the Native people, as we called them. I’m sure there is a politically correct way to say it. Anyway, most little girls ignore stuff like that, or run away crying. But not her. I said something about her chicken legs and she came right back with well, you noticed them didn’t you?” Eli laughed.

“Twelve years old and I guess I was sixteen,” he continued. “I saw her off and on in town, then I went off to college and came back to visit. Kenneth was all geeked up about professor Hawthorne at the high school while he was interning. Brendon and I never really cared for that smarty-pants guy. But, anyway, he went to visit him at the school and took me to meet his smarty-pants boyfriend while he was tutoring some students. And there she was. I recognized her face, but she wasn’t so skinny anymore. She caught me looking at her legs and smiled. Still looking aren’t you?” Eli tried to mock Abigail Stevens’ sixteen-year-old voice.

“Bold girl. I liked it. No games, just straightforward. She got pregnant, and we came up with a plan to elope after I graduated. I had just a couple of months left when her mother found out and tried to make her tell who the father was. She said one of the Shelley boys. But, she never named me. I don’t know why that bothered me. It was like she was saying it was one of us, but really didn’t know which one it was.

“I knew there was no chance that she slept with Kenneth, so I asked Brendon if the baby could be his. He just shrugged and said anything was possible. Now that I’m older I know he was bullshitting. He was drunk or high most of the way through college. Abigail was all about being alcohol and drug free. I couldn’t even smoke around her. Anyway, I asked Abigail if it were possible that it was Brendon’s. She swore no way.

“I asked her why she didn’t name me. She asked me why I didn’t name myself. I know it was a cruel thing to do, but I said I wasn’t sure if I should. The look that girl gave me could freeze water. Next thing I know my parents and her mother made a deal; she’d give up the baby in exchange for money…

CHAPTER ONE

It was half past noon on Monday when Special Agent Audra Wheeler of the FBI stepped into the apartment of Gwyneth Miller. She’d been in Savannah the prior week but, as a native New Yorker, she was sure that she would never get used to the stifling Georgia heat. She noted that the air conditioner was not on as she walked across the living room, listening to the muffled sounds of country cops inevitably messing up Gwyneth’s room that was now an official FBI crime scene.

Gwyneth Miller was the fifth victim of a suspected serial killer of the specter variety, who had a thing for dark haired, dark eyed women sleeping alone. As she stepped into the crime scene, Audra activated the specter shield she wore around her left wrist to block any specters from getting within five feet of her.

She’d spent nearly four years on special assignments with the FBI investigating specter crimes and bringing them to justice. The biggest problem with catching a criminal specter was that they never left any physical evidence, no DNA, no fingerprints, no calling card, no expository note, and no obvious motive.

In this particular case, all of the hunches that Audra had to go off of were of a personal nature that she was still not entirely comfortable sharing. To her knowledge, this would be the first and only specter that had crossed the line into murder and then into serial killing. This particular specter had taken her from Boston to New Jersey, then Charlotte, Savannah, and finally the small town of Specter, Georgia.

She walked into Gwyneth Miller’s bedroom and immediately noted the scent of candles and perfume. Audra suspected that maybe this woman had, in fact, had a visitor the night before and, perhaps, this would not fit the profile of her four previous cases.

She quickly scanned the room and made note of the cheap, feminine décor. Audra cringed, turning her attention to the body of the victim. Gwyneth was lying in bed, on her side with her hands near her throat, which was singed with strange burn marks. Her fingernails had scratched at her throat as well, peeling away some of the skin. These were the telltale signs of the specter that she was following but, most disturbingly, this victim, like all the others, looked a lot like her sister.

“Shit,” Audra said. She looked over at the side table and took in a large purple candle. “What is this?” She leaned in close.

“A candle from the Daylight Candle Shop.”

Hearing his voice, Audra took a shallow breath before quickly letting it out. She turned as he strolled through Gwyneth Miller’s bedroom door and walked towards her. He wore laid back local Southern clothes; faded jeans with a slightly tattered t-shirt and baseball cap, but there was no mistaking the city attitude in his walk.

When Audra had received the initial fax of a possible fifth victim, she’d read Ethan Cole’s name on top of the report file with disbelief. Now, in front of her, she was wary. His New York City swagger was enough to make a nun forget her vows just long enough to break them four or five times. Audra quickly contemplated the precious few times she’d crossed the line with her ex-partner before he’d been transferred to the American South.

He was six-foot two and maybe two hundred pounds of muscle. Audra remembered the feel of his baby-smooth chocolate skin and the taste of his beautifully full lips. He was six years older than her twenty-seven, but it looked good on him.

She turned her attention away from his large hazel eyes back to the candle and examined the tiny instruction card next to it.

“May love’s embrace meet me at dawn’s face.” She snorted as she became painfully aware of how close Ethan was standing next to her. She had to mentally and physically resist the draw of his cologne as it invited her to lean into him. “The Daylight Candle Shop,” she confirmed.

She had already known there would be no evidence of the killer at the scene, but she’d asked for nothing to be touched, not even the body, before she arrived and took a look around. Audra listened to the coroner’s report; the victim had died of asphyxiation from a suspected crushed esophagus, somewhere near dawn of the previous day, Sunday. She said a prayer for Gwyneth and then left without another word to anyone.

Ethan followed her out of the apartment building.

“Hey, Audra. Wait up.”

She turned as she stepped outside, and he closed the space between them. She ignored the oppressive heat for a moment to address him.

“I’m going to go over to the library and question the people she worked with.”

“I already did that,” he said.

“Well, I’m going to do it as well,” she said, making it clear that the investigation was now hers to control.

“Okay, but listen. This town is full of – ”

“Specters? Yeah, I know.” Audra rolled her eyes at the thought of an entire town, in southern America of all places, which was home to people who had passed away. Ethan placed a hand on her shoulder. She turned to walk to her car, pulling away from his touch in the process, shutting out the wave of feelings that screamed for her attention.

“Don’t worry, I won’t go around zapping your ghostly citizens.” Her specter zapper was safely tucked away in her gun belt, just to the rear of her handgun. “But, you might want to warn the Daylight Candle Shop that they’re next on my list.”

Blurb:

Four girlfriends on a weekend trip to New Orleans attract the attention of flesh-eating Scavengers. The women must rely on their wits, a cocky Irish movie star, and a dodgy deal with vampires to survive the night during this wild adventure through the Big Easy.

Excerpt:

Audrey downed her drink and then stood up saying, “On that note, I’ve got to pee.” She smoothed down the back of her dress, wary of unwittingly flashing the bar and yanked open the enormous front door.
The walls of the cavernous hallway were hung with old paintings, but Audrey barely noticed them as she walked down a threadbare carpet runner toward the back. She passed the old dining room and then the long, wooden bar where two college boys in button-down shirts and khaki shorts were tossing back whiskey.
“Hey, darlin’,” the tall one with floppy dark blonde hair said, as he approached Audrey. He had a deep voice, the kind of Southern accent that suggested lots of money and bourbon, and a cocky grin that reeked of frat parties and date rape. “Why don’t you let me buy you a drink?”
Audrey smiled and said, “Thanks, but I’ve already got a drink and I’m with my friends.”
The boy smiled and reached out a hand to place on Audrey’s elbow. “Aw, sugar, you’re too pretty to hang out with the girls all night. You haven’t visited New Orleans till you’ve had a Tulane man buy you a cocktail.”
Audrey laughed. “You’re cute, but I’m probably old enough to be your mom. Thanks anyway, sport!” She darted into the ladies’ room, leaving Tulane Boy panting and angry on the other side of the door.
“Come on, man,” his friend said, tugging on his arm. “Plenty other bitches out here, let’s get another round.”
“Yeah, sure.” Tulane Boy jerked away from his buddy, saying, “You go order, I gotta take a leak.”
“You come right back, though, y’hear?” The friend asked, looking Tulane Boy as directly in the eye as his drunken state would allow. “We don’t want any trouble, do we?”
“No, man. No trouble.”
Tulane Boy ducked into the men’s room for about sixty seconds, and then he eased the door quietly back open. He stood in front of the ladies’ room door and looked to the right and to the left. He put one large hand on the frosted glass panel of the door, and carefully began to turn the knob with the other hand.
“Leave her alone.” The cultured English voice startled Tulane Boy and he jerked around. A tall, dark-haired man sat in the parlor across the hall from the bar. His face was hidden in the shadowy light of the empty room, but his muscular arm stretched the fabric of his suit coat as he casually turned his highball glass round and round in his hand.
Tulane Boy was certain he hadn’t noticed anyone when he’d slipped into the hall, but maybe he had made a mistake in the murky light.
He smiled his practiced good ol’ boy grin and said, “Leave who alone? I’m just tryin’ to take a piss, brother.” He then pretended to notice that he had the wrong bathroom door and slapped his hand across his forehead. “Oh man, look at that – I almost went into the ladies’ room. Thanks for the heads up.” He nodded to the man who, Tulane Boy could clearly tell did not believe him, and he turned around and headed back to the bar.
The man sat without moving in the dark parlor until Tulane Boy disappeared from sight. He stared directly ahead with black eyes and inhaled deeply of the stale, dusty air. His full lips curved up only slightly as if he’d just thought of something funny.
Then he stood up and placed his empty glass on a table without a sound and with a few quiet steps, approached the ladies’ room door.

Synopsis
On a remote island, a troubled family is trying to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. But, unbeknownst to them, the property they have inherited is shrouded in ancient magic – magic that could seek to consume and destroy them.
An arcane locked box, a strange and foreboding trail into the woods, a seductive young woman and tales of a malevolent spirit are just some of the perils Karen Andersen must face in order to find a way to save her family.
A spine-tingling tale filled with passion, lies and betrayal, this début novel will have you sleeping with the lights on!

Check out this glimpse inside!

A flash of lightning lit up the sky illuminating the L-shaped room where Sophie and Terri slept. The light was so bright, it startled Sophie awake and she sat up rubbing her eyes. When she could finally focus she was surprised to see their room was suffused by a golden glow that lingered long after the lightning faded. As she gazed about the room in wonder, she saw her twin standing by the window that looked out to the backyard.

“Ter, what ya doin’?” she asked.

Terri turned her head, a bright smile on her face. “Soph, come see. It’s beautiful. It’s like a fairy world.”

Sophie got out of bed and joined her sister at the window. Her eyes widened in amazement when she saw what was happening outside. Scores of fireflies were dancing around one of the bushes in the yard, their light sparkling and shimmering in the wind and rain.

“It looks like Christmas,” said Sophie, her voice filled with awe.

“Yeah, Soph. See how they dance. And listen – I think they’re singing.”

Sophie pressed her face to the glass, straining to hear. “I don’t hear anything.”

“Close your eyes and really listen.”

Sophie did as her sister instructed. In a moment she nodded her head eagerly. “I hear it. I hear it. It’s like magic. It’s so pretty.”

The girls grinned in delight as they listened to the sweet melodic song of the fireflies.

“What language is it?” Sophie whispered. “I don’t understand it but I love it.”

“I don’t know. I’ve never heard anything like it before.”

They stood quietly listening and watching the spectacle taking place before them oblivious to the storm that was raging. But in an instant, their joy was cut short by a loud crack of thunder that shook the house. The room plunged into darkness as the golden glow was extinguished and the fireflies disappeared.

“Look,” whispered Sophie pointing her finger to the yard.

Terri gripped her sister’s hand tightly as she watched a shadowy figure streak across the lawn toward the woods. A flash of lightning lit up the sky, temporarily blinding the girls and when their sight returned, the figure was gone.

They stood transfixed, waiting to see what would happen next. Then a soft mournful sob, barely audible at first, pierced the silence. Stunned, Terri and Sophie hugged each other in fear as the sobs became more desperate. The wind began to howl and mournful cries echoed in the night. Tears streamed down Sophie’s cheeks as she recognized the voice that was now calling out her name.

“It sounds like Mommy, Ter! Is it Mommy? Please, is it Mommy?”

Terri leaned forward, her body rigid as she strained to recognize the voice calling to them. The sound was so familiar but not real, not like her mother. Yet, it was her. “Soph, it is Mommy. She sounds in so much pain. I think she’s hurt. We have to help her.”

Terri gripped her sister’s hand tightly. The cries were becoming more plaintive now as if the caller was losing hope.

“We have to wake Daddy. He’ll know what to do.”

Terri shook her head. “We can’t get Daddy, Soph. What if it’s his fault? What if he hurt her again? You heard them fighting. No, it’s up to us, Soph. We have to help her.”

The girls stood staring at each other for what seemed a lifetime, then Sophie nodded. “You’re right. Let’s go. We have to find Mommy. We have to save her.”

Terri took her sister’s hand and squeezed it. Together they tiptoed out of their room and down the stairs. They stopped briefly at the hall closet and put their slickers on over their nightclothes to try to stay dry and grabbed a flashlight. Then hand in hand, they opened the door and, without hesitation, went silently out into the storm.

BBT Confessions of Sylva Slasher Banner 851 x 315

Food poisoning and sinking aren’t the only things you have to worry about when going on a cruise.

You just might run into some zombies, and there’s no place to go if you do.

Welcome aboard.

Confessions of Sylva Slasher

A Zombie Novel

Ace Antonio Hall

Confessions of Sylva Slasher cover

Publisher: Montag Press, April 2013

Genre: YA Horror

MY REVIEW

So here’s the skinny. Sylva is a necromancer and along with her friends, they raise the dead so loved ones can say goodbye and they also help in criminal cases.

The raising on their party cruise doesn’t quite go as expected. Soon the ship is overrun with slathering zombies and the gore fest begins.

It just so happens this is the two-year anniversary for the death of Sylva’s boyfriend Brandon.

Imagine her surprise when she discovers he’s very much alive.

How could I resist another zombie story. Seems like I’ve been reading a lot of them and am always surprised at how much I enjoy them. The Confessions of Sylva Slasher joins that rank.

There’s no easing into it with this book. The first chapter gave me chill bumps.

Then the next chapter takes you back several hours earlier.  I just knew something was going to go wrong with the raising, but the author rocked me back in my seat when he let loose that shocker. Sure didn’t see it coming.

And that’s the way it is all through this book.

Sylva finds out her dead boyfriend isn’t, she’s up to her eyeballs in zombies, and a weird being that moves so fast she can only glimpse a black blur and a bushy tail had me wondering who, if any, might survive the cruise.

I couldn’t imagine being trapped on a ship with all this going on. There’s nowhere to run, no rescue waiting on the other end of your 911 call. It’s all up to you whether you live or die.

The unexpected curve balls the author threw at me had me wondering how there could be a happy ending. I’m not going to tell you whether it was or not, I’m just going to say it was good, real good.

I’ve never been on a cruise and I’m now rethinking that desire. The apocalypse is coming, don’t ya know.

Wanting to get away from raising the dead for police investigations and demanding grieving families for a while, she goes on a cruise for spring break. Her vacation from the dead is short-lived when passengers on the ship turn into flesh-eating zombies. These are not the same simple-minded harmless zombies she raises and can control, so Sylva and her friends are trapped on the Pacific Ocean. Their only escape comes from a guy Sylva thought was dead: Brandon. It just so happens to also be the anniversary of his death, and she’s still hurting from his loss!

Why didn’t he call to say he’s alive? All those tears … for nothing.

Sylva doesn’t normally hold grudges, but when someone plays with her heart they have to pay. However, with the fate of the human race on the line, Brandon convinces Sylva to join him in a secret mission, yet she can’t shake the feeling that he’s hiding something.

It didn’t take long for her suspicions to hold true when it’s revealed that Brandon has been romantically involved with the very enemy he now wants her to destroy. To top that brutal betrayal, the villainous female would rather kill Brandon than let Sylva have a chance to patch things up between them. Sylva is not the kind of girl to walk away from love without a fight, but with a strange virus threatening extinction of human life, she shoves her own feelings in her back pocket to face her greatest nightmare, and that nightmare starts with something that is eerily growing right inside of her own mind and body.

Excerpt Chapters 1 & 2

PART ONE SILVER KISSES

For since death came through a man,

the resurrection of the dead

comes also through a man.— I Corinthians 15:21

Chapter 1

YEAH, THE WHOLE STINKING PLANET WANTED ME DEAD, and they got their wish. I tried to move but couldn’t. Not with a broken back. Breathing slow, uneven, I stared into the undead woman’s eyes that dripped an ominous glare down onto my helpless body.

Maybe if I hadn’t gotten dreamy eyes for this really cute guy (I mean jerk), the weight of the human race wouldn’t be sitting on my shoulders. I would’ve easily given my life so my best friend, Emily, wouldn’t die. Too late.

The full moon draped around the undead woman’s shadow that climbed up my broken body like ghosts of death. The island soil, thirsty for moisture, welcomed my blood. Terror wrestled me into a stone cold chokehold—I forgot how to scream. The scent of rotten corpses gripped my nostrils. A horde of the walking dead moaned and hovered over me like starved coyotes as the undead woman crept forward on all fours to kill me, again.

Chapter 2

Several hours prior:

I HATED THAT I COULDN’T TELL REALITY FROM MY NIGHTMARES. Maybe, just maybe I spent one too many nights raising the dead. My parents named me Sylva Fleischer, but most people knew me as Sylva Slasher (I’ll get to why later). I made a pretty cool living as a necromancer for The Silver Kisses Aerial Ash Scattering Company. We raised zombies for mourners to say their last goodbyes. A lot of times we did it for police investigations, occasionally for corporate disputes, and then we cremated the deadheads and scattered the remains over Hawaii’s beautiful waters. As a matter-of-fact, some guy from the military base in Honolulu kept leaving messages on my cell phone that he wanted me to raise some dead soldier for a case they were investigating. But I had other plans. Look, I just turned eighteen, so if I wanted to ditch some lame colonel for something way more hella-fun, I would. What? Can’t a girl have priorities?

Twilight peeked over my shoulders as I looked for my friends while aboard the Sea Queen a.k.a. The Ship of a Thousand Corpses—the best freaking zombie-themed cruise in America. Imagine being in one of those magnificent hotels in Las Vegas during spring break; the golden elevators, escalators, walkover bridges, restaurants, and stores, filled with tons of thrill-seeking college kids and adults. You could call the Sea Queen one of the world’s best luxury hotels but on water.

A woman hired me to do a raising on the ship. Emily, and her boyfriend, Beckham, or Flip as he liked to be called (Hawaiian-born and Japanese-descended like Em), were going to help me. After I finally got dressed, I saw Emily’s wacky picture that she posted on Facebook and her bitchy complaint that she and Flip were waiting on me (I’m always fashionably late) in the bar on the Nightwalker Deck. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a clue where to go. The captain was escorting me up, but some kind of urgent call came in and he dashed out of the elevator speaking radio codes into his walkie-talkie.

One of my all-time fave videos, Sweet Dreams, played on the inside of the elevator doors via a hi-tech projector system. I loved it that I could watch a music video (albeit, one I’ve seen a kazillion times) inside of the elevator. A volume control knob sat beneath the red emergency button. Marilyn Manson crawled out of the rundown fireplace wearing black boots, a dirty tutu, and a torn bodice that showed off his skeletal bare chest. Alright, that’s enough. I turned the sound down so I could briefly gather my thoughts for the raising.

The elevator doors eased open. I stepped out, immediately folding my arms and shivering. I wore a black mid-riff tee shirt, tight leather pants, and some five-and-a-half inch knee-high Gothic boots. I sighed, berating myself for not wearing a warmer top. The ship’s fake fog blanketed the air so I could barely see anything. Already late, I didn’t want to waste any more time so I stopped to ask a person dressed like a zombie nun for directions. She sat on the bench in front of the ship’s THEATRE UNDER THE STARS, rocking back and forth. A broken dog leash dangled in her hand. The closer I got, the more I realized her hunched feeble posture.

“Lady, are you okay?” I asked.

She didn’t answer but kept rocking. Her abrupt movements made her wimple flap around her neck and chin. I glanced up at the speaker mounted on the wall above us, creeped out by the spooky organ music streaming out into the foggy air.

The lady made a gurgling sound.

“Miss, hey? Are you okay?”

Her head lifted slowly. The yellow rays from the moon crept into the shadows under her headdress. I stepped forward slowly, swallowing unease.

A name spilled out of my mouth, slow, whispered. “Malena?”

I remembered admiring the blind woman’s seeing eye dog when we embarked the ship. I couldn’t resist petting her wolfdog. Emily and Flip were so occupied looking for their tickets that they didn’t even see Malena and her dog.

She made another gurgling sound. I took a step back, peering into her cloudy-white eyes.

“Um, okay, I get it,” I said. “You were hired by the ship to scare people. Right?”

I swayed a little to the left as the ship went over choppy waters. The blind woman stared past me with a vacant stare, and then her head rolled over to her right shoulder.

“Hey—hey—hey. You’re not okay,” I said, extending my arm, ready to catch her if she fell off of the bench.

Was she having a seizure?

Malena muttered something. Saliva ran down her mouth and dripped down her chalky white face.

“Are you having a allergic reaction?” I glanced to my right, then left. “Maybe I should get the ship’s doctor.”

Her body started to convulse and she dropped the dog’s leash on the deck’s floor. She moaned, curling up into a ball on the bench.

“Okay—okay—okay, I’m going to get help,” I said, taking a quick step toward the stairs. “But, uh, shoot, I don’t want to leave you alone.”

A sign directly above her read nightwalker deck maze; another, near the elevator lifts, pointed to the bathrooms. Someone had to be coming by, any second. Another gurgling noise came from the blind woman. She coughed and blood spurted out of her mouth. I shielded my eyes with the back of my hand and something wet splattered on my forearm.

“Oh, my God, Malena! You’re, you’re hemorrhaging.”

I wiped her blood off my arms, onto the side of my top and pulled out my iPhone to call 911. No reception.

“Somebody, help. Call 911!”

I heard someone giggling and saw shadows approaching me through the fog. Two Asian girls, maybe in their late teens, dressed in shredded jeans and pink tee shirts passed behind me.

I gestured to them. “Can I use either one of your phones to call 911? This lady is totally sick!”

“Nice try,” one of them said, revealing the braces on her teeth. “But you only try to scare us.”

“No, please, really. Are you getting reception out here? I’m not getting reception.”

They laughed and pointed at the bench. “Maybe she pull your leg,” the same girl said.

I turned around and glared at an empty bench.

Where did she go?

The girls giggled and walked toward the bathroom, shaking their heads.

“What a moron,” the other one said.

“Miss? Miss, where are you?” I called out, a little irritated by those stupid girls who didn’t believe me. I looked toward the bridge then back at the girls. “Where did she go?” They ignored me and went into the bathroom. Seriously?

“Maybe I am a moron,” I said, under my breath. There were a few droplets of blood on the bench, but I couldn’t find a trail showing me which way she went. She could’ve only gone but so many places—the elevator lift, the stairs, across the bridge (which she didn’t because I would have seen her), overboard, or into the Nightwalker Deck Maze.

If that old, blind lady thought I was going to play her game and follow her into the maze, she had another thing coming. Whatever. Time to do this raising and then try to have some fun for a change.

I took one step and the thought of Malena sent a chill creeping down the nape of my neck. Where did she go? Aw, Who cares? I shook it off, folded my arms, again, and walked toward a bridge that led to the highest deck on the ship.

Someone screamed. I turned quickly, and blew out a long breath as a wolf man in tattered clothes chased a screaming girl across the bridge and through a door. Music blared from out of the place and I knew that Emily and Flip would be in there. That must be the bar, Lipstick Zombies.

I walked over the bridge, glancing back every few seconds for Malena. The instant I crossed halfway over, I heard the music thumping behind the bar’s door. When I saw the neon sign, I got a little excited. Maybe with a little partying, I thought, I’d feel better and forget about everything that sucked in my life—for a while.

My Review
.

Business is slow for P.I. Dan Landis. Not a lot of people needing him to catch cheating spouses during Christmas. So he moonlights as a security guard in a department store.

Bored to tears, he finally gets some action and chases a thief out the back door. The perp gets away but Dan has bigger problems. He’s just stumbled on Santa, and he’s quite dead. And soon he’s wading through dead Santas.. They start piling up, as the title The Five Santas says.

From not much happening, to catching the Kringle Killer and shopping for the perfect gift for his partner, Abbey, there’s never a dull moment for Dan.

Usually, when you picture a private detective, you envision someone tall, dark, and deadly. Dan is all of those things. But he’s also got some odd quirks, like using movie quotes in  his conversations and wearing his trademark day-glo socks. He has an odd way about him but he’s very much his own man.

His relationship with his partner, Abbey, is still new. Though this isn’t central to the story, it sure spices things up. I just worry about playing where you work.

The humor is all over the place in this book. The mystery of the Kringle Killer isn’t readily apparent. Each character is strongly written, easy to distinguish and empathize with. The romance is sweet, snarky, and maddening. And the action is fast, fast, fast.

Bring on the next book. I’m ready for more.

MY REVIEW
.
More steam punk fun with Nero’s Fiddle.
Just a warning that this is the third book in the series so there may be some small spoilers.
Cara and Nate are settling in as newlyweds and doing what they love, hunting for more artifacts.
The enigmatic and Inspector Frasier is also back and the bizarre deaths by spontaneous combustion bring these characters together again.
The fiddle is being wielded to kill and these three must combine their skills to catch the killer and maintain a startling secret.
I enjoyed the mystery in the first book, Nefertiti’s Heart. It was the second book, Hatshepsut’s Collar the blew me away. It was more of a thriller.
And Nero’s Fiddle, while also more of a mystery, is very much character driven. Something I look for in my reads.
There are many returning characters and some new ones.
Cara’s body guard, Brick, is a hoot and how perfect is his name?
Then, enter the Curator. He gave me the creeps. The story leads me to believe we’ll be dealing with him again in Moseh’s Staff, which will conclude this series.
I’m sure the author will stun us with the finale. I’m hoping all of the character’s, good and bad, will return to thrill me one last time.

My Interview with M. Ryan Seaver

  • Please tell us a little about yourself

I’m an author raised in upstate New York by a family of writers. I’ve spent the last ten years of my life in Boston, and recently moved to Chicago, where I spend every moment not spent writing exploring this enormous city, finding new places to eat and drink.

2) What did you want to be when you grew up?

Not a writer! My mother is actually a novelist as well, so I was constantly asked if I wanted to be a writer too, and I always said no, which I think was more of a kneejerk reaction than anything else. I changed my mind a lot about what I wanted to be as a younger kid, but as a teenager I finally settled on acting. I was in all the school musicals, and did acting camp during the summer. I ended up studying theater in Boston before I discovered that writing was my real love. I feel like I’m still acting, but in a different way. As a writer, I get to play all the parts as I’m writing the story. I get to play roles I would never be able to play in real life, which is a great feeling. I love being able to play some giant thug, or a really sinister bad guy.

  • If you were granted 3 wishes, what would you wish for?

Infinite wishes! Just kidding. 1) A home with a beautiful state of the art kitchen, a serene little office, and enough rooms for all my friends and family to come stay. 2) The ability to eat what I like and not end up out looking like the stay puffed marshmallow man. 3) My sister just announced her engagement. I remember how absolutely overjoyed my grandmother was when I called her several years ago to tell her I was getting married, and how much she enjoyed the wedding. She’s since passed away. I wish she was here to see my sister get married too. She would have been absolutely beside herself.

  • What genres do you like to read?

I’m a compulsive reader. I just devour everything. I really gravitate toward mystery, but love fiction in general, particularly if there’s a little something magical happening throughout the story (think The Time Traveler’s Wife, The Lovely Bones, In the Woods, The Night Circus).

5) Are you working on anything new and could you share a little with us?

I’ve just finished the first draft of the next book in the John Arsenal series. This one is a serial killer mystery, which is particularly interesting because of course in Brimstone, everyone is already dead. But as it turns out, when you’re killed in Hell, there’s something even worse than death waiting on the other side. It was a lot of fun to be able to follow John into this new chapter, because of course he had to go through so much in No Bad Deed, some of those demons are still hanging around for him, and will be for quite some time.

Five Fun Shorts

  • Favorite TV show

Just one? Sherlock. However I haven’t been able to get my Sherlock fix lately, since we’re between seasons, so Sleepy Hollow has been standing in.

  • Best book ever

In the Woods by Tana French. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve re-read that book. It has everything I love about mystery novels, but wrapped up in this gorgeous prose, and tied up with this cunning thread of something slightly supernatural.

  • What animal would you like to be?

Any type of bird. Whenever I feel stuck or stressed I find myself thinking how nice it would be to be a bird. No bills, no deadlines, no drama, just flight.

  • Print or eBooks for reading?

Both! But I do love a paper book, and my home is bursting with them. Paper books satisfy the collector in me in a way ebooks never will.

  • Flip flops or high heels?

Flip flops. I try to limit my time in high heels as much as possible. They are oh so pretty, but the prettiness is often counteracted by my grimace as I struggle to stay upright.

A Dare

Tell us the first thing that popped in your head.

Breakfast. I’ve just returned from a trip, and there’s nothing to eat in the house. Most of the time if you ask me what I’m thinking, the answer will be food.

MY REVIEW

He’s a gumshoe in Brimstone. A P.I. in Hell. He goes by the name of John Arsenal.

On a good day, no one tries to wave him and he doesn’t return the favor.

In hell, you’re already dead, so to wave someone is to erase them. “…something more terrifying than damnation.”   To end their soul’s existence.

Arsenal knows she’s trouble the minute she opens her mouth. The sweet looking Mirelle Bissette. She wants him to locate her missing sister. Her identical twin, Sophie.

That’s a problem. You see, in Hell, no one knows what they did to wind up there. No one remembers their life before they died, or their real name. So how can she remember her real name, or that she even had a sister?

She claims she knew Arsenal before. Before Brimstone. And she uses that knowledge as leverage to get him to take her case. If he does, she’ll tell him how she knew him, what his real name was, and most importantly, what he did to get him sent to hell. That was too hard to resist and he takes the case. Begins the search for Sophie.

I knew I was going to love this book. A P.I. in Hell. I wondered what kind of cases he would have. What kind of clients.

With no money in hell, the author came up with some much desired, plausible, items in exchange for currency.

And what would hell be without some drugs to get you through the monotonous days. Switch is the new drug of choice. It does something that shouldn’t be possible. Could hell get any worse?

John’s search for Sophie takes him to the dangerous outskirts of Brimstone. It’s where “they” roam. The orphans or Brimstone. Mirelle says her sister mentioned them. Worried that they were left to fend for themselves.

Imagine it. Adults had time to mature. To choose to do whatever terrible thing it was that landed them in hell. What must the children be like. I shudder to think. They are frozen in time. Evil in small form. They’ll wave you just for the fun of it.

From first page to last, I was completely absorbed in this story. The writing is excellent, the story reads easily and quickly, and the characters are entertaining or disgusting, as they should be. And the world is incredibly creative and visually alive.

Bravo to the author. An excellent debut novel. Can’t wait to see where John lands next.

D@&n good reading!

BLURB:

Private detective John Arsenal can’t tell you what terrible crime he committed to wind up in a sweltering urban hellscape, surrounded by thieves, drug addicts and murderers—only that it was very bad, and now he’s being punished. That’s because in Hell—or Brimstone, as the damned prefer to call it—your identity, your memories, even your name, are stripped away from you.

John is relatively comfortable in his damnation, working easy cases and making himself at home in the grimy squalor of the afterlife. That is, until a mysterious woman appears in his office, begging him to find her missing sister, and promising him the impossible in return—a glimpse of his old life, before Brimstone.

To track down the enigmatic Sophie, John must delve into Brimstone’s darkest recesses, where murderous children run wild in packs, and a strange and terrifying new drug promises to deliver the user to the heights of ecstasy, but at the risk of being snuffed out of existence altogether. All the while, John must grapple with the vivid nightmares that have haunted him since his arrival in Brimstone, and confront the thing he desires and dreads the most—the truth of what he did to deserve damnation.

Excerpt

“How did you get in?” I said.

“Are you going to shoot me, Mr. Arsenal?” Her voice had the slightest hint of an accent. My eyes adjusted to the light, and I could see her more clearly. She was early thirties, maybe, with a heart shaped face, and huge, dark eyes. Tendrils of black hair sprang free from the messy knot at the back of her head and stuck to the nape of her neck, and I wondered immediately, like I always do when I see a pretty woman in Brimstone, what she could have possibly done to end up here.

“Don’t want to,” I said. “You going to tell me how you got in here?”

“Your front door was unlocked,” she said. “You should really be more careful. This city is full of lunatics.”

“Mm-hmm,” I said. “You one of them?”

She smiled and sat on the edge of my desk, and I cringed instinctively, thinking about the film of crud and ash covering everything in this apartment. Her dress was the color of cream, and I wondered how she kept the thing so clean.

“If I said no, would you believe me?”

“I guess not,” I said, and sat up. “Don’t you know it’s polite to knock?”

“I did knock,” she said. “You didn’t answer.”

“So you just let yourself in.”

“I didn’t think you’d pull a gun on me,” she said.

I was raised in Rochester, New York, in a house that was constantly full of writers. On nights when my parents and their friends were holding court in our living room, I would practice the fine art of evading the little kids in the next room, setting up camp among the grown-ups, and being quiet long enough that they would forget I was there, and that it was past my bedtime. All my best dirty jokes were picked up this way.

I studied theatre performance at Northeastern University, where I spent a little time onstage, and a lot of time reading plays. I fell in love with Sam Shepard, Arthur Miller, and Nicky Silver. Exposed to plays day in and day out, I honed my ear for dialogue, and learned firsthand that if the writing doesn’t ring true, no amount of brilliant acting would make it right. I wrote my first play (terrible, melodramatic, with characters whose names did absolutely nothing to mask the real people they were based on). I showed it to no one. It’s probably still on my computer somewhere.

John Arsenal and Brimstone came to me during a bout of unemployment, in between searching desperately for a job, and baking more bread than was sane or reasonable for my two person household. The idea came to me in my sleep, demanding to be written, and that’s how the prologue of the book came into existence: In my darkened apartment in Boston at one o clock in the morning, my eyes barely able to focus on the computer screen long enough to get the words down. Sleep has continued to be the place where John Arsenal and I meet up to put the pieces of his story together. I’ve never been prone to insomnia, but John, it seems, is, and has never cared much for my sleep schedule.

In my life before Brimstone, I’ve worked as a telemarketer (I’m sorry) administrative assistant, waiter (badly, briefly), clerk and occasional story-time reader in a children’s bookstore, and professional hawker of everything from magazine subscriptions to national television advertising. I was better with magazines. I now live in Chicago with the love of my life, and my snarling, seven-toed demon-cat, Clara. No Bad Deed is the first book in the John Arsenal mystery series.

I did a double take after reading the beginning of this book. I was pretty sure this was a YA fantasy adventure. But that first chapter, that thing with the shadow, really creeped me out. Then the end of the chapter explained what was what and I was all in.

Seven year old Matilda is a book lover. She’s been looking forward to the huge book sale. When her mother finally gets them there, she only has 45 minutes to find and purchase her books. She has just one to go and finally spies it. But another customer grabs it at the same time and Matilda loses the tug of war. Turning to gather up her other books, she discovers them gone. No books for Matilda.

But wait. Didn’t she hear a book fall to the floor in the scuffle? Yes! She swoops up the book and takes it home, not knowing that ancient book will take her on the adventure of a lifetime.

Sceadu is a book of shadows. It’s the shadows that take Matilda to Sceadu. That and the words from the book. And her belief the place really exists.

Her older brother and two cousins don’t believe her, until they discover she’s vanished. They too use the book and shadows to go after her.

Adding a family crisis made this story work. The adults had to leave on a family emergency and have the older cousins, Steven and Patrick come stay with Matilda, and her older brother Robert. Robert is self-centered and a bully and not good material as a babysitter. Having the kids disappear wouldn’t have worked if the adults had been at home. And you know what they say, ‘When the cats away, the mice will play.’

I felt Matilda was better equipped to navigate Sceadu than the boys were.  They were always fighting, trying to one-up each other. I truly hoped they get their act together and find Matilda.  If the ancient prophecy was true, they might not have a world to return to.

Anyone who likes a good fantasy adventure will enjoy Sceadu. It has heroes, dastardly villians, the deadly Hefigan creatures, an ancient prophecy, and a mystical world of shadows. I’d recommend this for young and mature readers.

Book Description:

All this while, Matilda’s shadow had been growing larger and larger. Suddenly, it lunged out of the ground and swallowed her, like a python does its unsuspecting prey.

Nine year old Matilda ends up with a century old book through a series of strange coincidences. And disappears. Her brother and cousins are forced to suspend their hostilities and pursue her to Sceadu, a land inside the human shadow. Once there, the reluctant visitors find themselves chased by the vicious Hefigans, creatures of Sceadu. However, everything changes with the revelation of an ancient prophecy that foretells the doom of the world they left behind.

With the stakes suddenly raised, the children must now navigate the dangerous terrain, overcome grave challenges, and unlock the secrets of the shadow. But can they do it in time to thwart the plans of the treacherous Hefigans? Or will they succumb to the guile of a ruthless enemy who is equally determined to destroy mankind?

Sceadu is a fast-paced adventure which blurs the boundary between the physical and the psychological, the real and the mythical.

Just check out the spectacular cover art for By Starlight.

It grabbed me right away.

Then I read the blurb and was charmed.

I believe something wondrous waits inside this book, along with something dreadful. Sounds like a book for me!

BLURB:

The night my best friend Gracie disappeared, I had a nightmare.

A monster loomed from the shadows around the campfire. I ran. The thing stretched after me…

I woke gasping, afraid it might somehow be true. Gracie could always make me feel better – but she didn’t respond to my email. Not that night; not ever.

That’s what lead to my summer camp counselor job here near Gracie’s home. Hiking and canoeing fill every moment but I don’t forget why I’m here. I’m going to find Gracie.

The camp-owner, a famous Native seer, isn’t any help. Her herbal healing and Spirit Bear talisman won’t help find Gracie.

There’s the local ranger and my campers, but will they believe me? I’m alone with this. Somehow, I will find her…

Check out this glimpse inside!

“Shhhh.” Frankie, riding point, set her paddle in front of her. She deftly removed her camera from its bag. I followed her gaze, past the high yellow-tipped grasses in a pocket of boggy greenery. Dark, vine-covered stumps jutted from the black surface of the water. Long branches of goldenrod lay flattened, at the foot of narrow, dark limbs. No, not tree limbs, those were legs!

Frankie hastily snapped a photograph of the moose. The animal’s face was half-submerged, but as we glided by, it slowly raised its head and stared at us.

Immense, it stood with long green growth hanging out of its mouth and trailing back into the water. Everyone saw it now. Quiet fell over the lot of us. Frankie leaned this way and that, trying, I guess, to get an exceptional shot.

Slowly, the moose dropped its head back to its soggy grazing.

Chelsea let out a long, drawn out “Coooooool.”

I wondered if the kayakers had belted by without even noticing the massive animal by the riverside.

The quiet creek allowed us to glide with paddles barely touching the water. I think after spotting the moose we were all of the same mind.

All we needed now was to see a bear. I stared hopefully into the thick woods on our other side, thinking they might prefer the shade of the evergreens. The girls had to be thinking the same thing, because quiet hung over us; a quiet full of expectations.

Nice that the kayakers had shot ahead. They were always chattering and would have ruined the chance for us to see wildlife.

A splash alerted me again to the swampier side. It held more promise for a bear. Tempting, large dandelions grew right down to the water’s edge, and beyond that, stalks of what might be wild rhubarb. Nearer, maple saplings bowed over the river, trailing their leaves and making little circular ripples.

Dragonflies hovered in formation in the shadow of the little maples. They darted up and sideways, always keeping a strange, arrow-shaped formation, as we drew abreast.

A stick twirled slowly in the gentle current, caught in a scrawny maple branch. The yellowy stick had a strangely curved arch as if, somehow, man-made. The dragonflies shot upward as I reached it. I stretched very carefully to grab it. The strange stick snapped closed over my hand…
