My Review

From cleaning crimes scenes, CeCe is now tidying up condos. She’ll do whatever it takes to get her bills paid now that her divorce is looming ever closer. While having a girls night out, one of her friends has to rush home for a family emergency and CeCe offers to help clean out Carla’s mothers house while she’s gone. She didn’t take Carla’s comments about her mother being a hoarder that seriously. First big mistake. The second was opening the old freezer. Inside is a frozen body. Now Cece puts on her sleuthing cap and butts heads with her boyfriend, a detective that wants her to mind her own business.

Other character’s I came across were CeCe’s cheating ex to be and his spying mother. Sheesh, what a pair. And CeCe’s former co-worker who bulls her way into becoming an unwelcome house guest and kind of drove me nuts. She seemed so clueless, but then I began to wonder if that was an act. Especially when some Jade elephants that CeCe rescued from Carla’s mothers house get broken and out spills a shocking surprise.

I was new to this series and hadn’t read the first book. Kind of worried me whether I could hop in here. The good news is I quickly got the gist of things and easily came to recognize the characters. I then settled in for a fun cozy, a twisty mystery and some sweet brushes with romance. Now I want to go back and read the first book and find out how it all began.

Synopsis

.
An unwelcome visitor, an unrequited love, and a dead body create chaos in a middle-aged woman’s plan for a productive summer.

Despite a looming divorce, an empty checkbook, and a struggling cleaning business, Cece Cavanaugh is determined to land on her own two feet. Adamant about staying a safe distance from the handsome detective who has her fantasizing about violating the morals clause in her prenuptial agreement, Cece dives headlong into her work.

Even though she has no free time to spare, Cece finds herself guilted into cleaning a hoarder’s home. Her discoveries in the condemned house are too shocking to ignore. Diamond-laden pachyderms, a secret cache of money, and a dead body lure Cece into launching an investigation that places her in direct contact with the one person she’s desperate to avoid–hunky Detective Case Alder.

With clues in hand, Cece runs down leads and eliminates suspects one by one. Her conclusion and brave accusation put a friend’s life in peril forcing Cece to hatch a plan to outsmart the killer. A daring move could either save Cece and her friend or lead to their demise.

Author Tricia L. Sanders

Tricia L. Sanders writes cozy mysteries and women’s fiction. She adds a dash of romance and a sprinkling of snark to raise the stakes. Her heroines are humorous women embarking on journeys of self-discovery all the while doing so with class, sass, and a touch of kickass.

Tricia is an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, so don’t get between her and the television when a game is on. Currently, she is working on a mystery series set in the fictional town of Wickford, Missouri. Another project in the works is a women’s fiction road trip adventure.

A former instructional designer and corporate trainer, she traded in curriculum writing for novel writing, because she hates bullet points and loves to make stuff up. And fiction is more fun than training guides and lesson plans.

My Review

For Rory Anderson, Halloween keeps her very busy. Things are about to get even busier. She receives a strange email from a company called Beyond The Grave. They send out notices when someone dies and the email is in reference to her friend Zelena. All attempts by Rory to track down her friend leave her empty handed. It appears Zelena is either missing or could be dead.

Despite being told to stay out of the investigation by her boyfriend, Detective Martin Green, Rory and her friend, Liz, start digging around for answers. But maybe she should have listened to his warnings. If something bad happened to Zelena, who’s to say it can’t happen to them. Especially if they get close to discovering the who and why.

I’ve been known to jump into a series anywhere and that’s what happened here. My worries about reading this book out of order in the series were put to rest fairly quickly. The author easily filled me in on the character’s and their associations with each other without slowing down my reading experience. I settled in for some fun antics, delightful romance, Rory and Martin are so cute together, and a mystery that I couldn’t figure out until it was revealed to me.

So, whether you’ve read the previous books in this series, or you choose to jump in here, I can tell you it’ll be fun. And, you’ll need your detecting skills.

Synopsis

October brings a message from Beyond The Grave…

Halloween is fast approaching in the quiet Los Angeles County city of Vista Beach, home of computer programmer and tole-painting enthusiast Rory Anderson. While her painting chapter prepares to open its annual boutique house, Rory receives an unexpected email from Beyond The Grave, a company that automatically sends out messages when someone dies.

“I think I have a stalker,” the message reads. “If you’re reading this I’m either missing or dead. My life may depend on what you do. Please find out what happened to me.”

Haunted by her friend’s disappearance and possible death, Rory begins her search with the help of best friend and fellow painter, Liz Dexter. Can they discover who has designs on the missing woman and uncover the truth before one of them becomes the stalker’s next victim?

Mystic Falls

A Coyote Wells Mystery #1

by Vickie McKeehan

Genre: Cozy Mystery

My Review

There’s nothing Gemma regrets more than letting her mother drag her away from her grandmother and home so many years ago. Now she’s back and staying put, keeping her grandmother’s beloved chocolate shop running after her passing and putting down roots again. She quickly becomes embroiled in the case of some disappearing girls.

Gemma is a delight and I loved the chemistry between her and her sexy ex-husband, Lando, now the town chief of police.  I love second chance romance and these two are adorable. The Native American mysticism was an added bonus. I enjoyed learning, along with Gemma, about the psychic abilities both she and her grandmother shared and how each of the three spirits will help her use and grow her abilities.

Vickie cleverly and all too easily had me running in circles. one misdirection after another keeping me guessing until the last couple of chapters.

Did I enjoy this book? I sure did. All the ingredients I ask for in a cozy mystery and some delightful characters. Would I recommend this book? I do, very much so. And I’m already reading Shadow Canyon, the next book.

Shadow Canyon

A Coyote Wells Mystery #2

Genre: Cozy Mystery

My Review

Gemma is settling into being home again and her rekindled romance with her ex-husband, Lando, is steaming right along. They have much to work out but are confident they’ll get there. While taking her dog for a late evening walk she discovers the body of a woman she’s bumped heads with since back in school. Now she has to clear her name, keep her friends and family safe and keep her beloved Coyote Chocolate Company from becoming a casualty of the rumors.

Gemma is still learning about her psychic abilities. In the first book, Kamena, a reassuring Native American spirit visited her. This time she deals with the terse, kind of scary, Aponivi. The author made this so believable. Gemma doesn’t just become psychic. She struggles to understand her abilities and bumbles with using them. Not something she can just command at the drop of a hat.

Her and Lando were as adorable as ever. While Gemma grew in confidence, so did he. He’s really found his niche as chief of police and might just be coming around to believing in Gemma’s special powers too.

Rufus, Gemma’s chocolate lab, has a bigger role to play in this story. And when he loses his beloved sock puppet he becomes so depressed. My dog does that too. You know she’ll not stop until she finds that toy and makes her best friend happy again. Look closely at the covers and you’ll spy his smiling face.

A fun new adventure in the Coyote Wells Mystery series. Once again, I’m left hungry for more. And not just for chocolate. Can’t wait to get my hands on Spirit Lake, the third book in this exciting series.

Did I enjoy this book? You betcha. As much if not more than the first one. Would I recommend it? Yep. And you can read each of them as a stand alone, but I’d urge you to start where it all began and connect with the characters more fully.

Synopsis

Cozy mystery with a side of chocolate.

It’s the middle of summer and Gemma Channing is dealing with a host of issues that’s driving her straight up the wall. Small town politics. Wedding jitters. A crazy competitor from out of town. And now a serial killer.

Chief of Police Lando Bonner has his hands full with a crime wave. A string of burglaries and petty thefts are keeping him hopping. A decades-old, unsolved murder is now stalled, and he can’t seem to identify the young teenage victim.

On top of all that, someone wants them dead. No matter how hard Gemma tries, chocolate won’t fix this dilemma. But she’s determined to find a solution. Her decision to put her meddling ways behind her for good is lousy timing, but it unlocks a unique trust between her and Lando that hasn’t been there before. Will they ever reach their wedding day? Or will a serial killer, bent on covering up his crimes, get the best of them?

It’s all happening in this 3rd installment to Coyote Wells, a town reaped in history with its share of quirky characters.

But despite the Goodnight name, Matilda still spends her nights wide awake, and she has good reason after a reporter is murdered. With a mystery to solve, she begins to investigate the town and uncovers more suspects than she knows what to do with. Meanwhile, the hottie cowboy sheriff is doing his own investigation into Matilda, and the mysterious, handsome stranger, who just happens to live with her, is showing up in all the wrong places. As her investigation continues, danger increases, and it might end up spelling lights out for Matilda.

Die Noon is the first installment in the hilarious, romantic Goodnight Mysteries series and a spinoff of the Matchmaker Mysteries. Goodnight…Sometimes sweet dreams end in murder.

FACE THE MUSIC

Business is humming at Dodie O’Dell’s Windjammer Restaurant, where she offers theme menus connected to the Etonville Little Theatre’s amateur productions. This June, the theatre is collaborating with the neighboring Creston Players to stage Bye Bye Birdie under the stars—their first musical! There’s a contest in the play to pick a fan to receive rock idol Conrad Birdie’s last kiss before he ships off for the Army, so Dodie plans a contest to pick the food for a pre-show picnic.

But before the show opens, Ruby, the rehearsal accompanist, is found dead in her car. Why would anyone murder the crusty old gal who loved to sneak a smoke and a nip between wisecracks? Once again, the resourceful restaurant manager must play the part of amateur sleuth, accompanied by Police Chief Bill Thompson, who also happens to be her beau. Confronted with a chorus of suspects, she’ll need to stay composed to catch the killer—or it’ll be bye bye Dodie…

A Crafter Knits A Clue

For fans of Betty Hechtman and Maggie Sefton, the latest craft frenzy is Holly Quinn’s Handcrafted series debut.

Sammy Kane just moved back to her hometown to run a craft store. But when the owner of a nearby yarn shop is murdered, Sammy will needle little help finding the killer.

When a heartbroken Samantha “Sammy” Kane returns to her hometown of Heartsford, WI, for her best friend Kate’s funeral, she learns that Kate’s much-loved craft store is in danger of perishing with its owner. Confounding all her expectations of the life she would live, Sammy moves back home with her golden retriever and takes over Community Craft. A few doors down Main Street, fellow new arrival Ingrid Wilson has just opened the Yarn Barn, a real “purl” of a shop. But when Sammy strolls over to see if Ingrid could use a little help, she finds Ingrid’s dead body—with a green aluminum knitting needle lodged in her throat.

Detective Liam Nash is thrown for a loop as every single citizen of Heartsford seems to have a theory about Ingrid’s murder. And nearly everyone in town seems to be a suspect. But the last time Sammy did any sleuthing was as a little moppet. And this is not fun and games. Sammy is eager to help the handsome Liam—who seems to be endlessly inventive in finding reasons to talk with her—and when Liam arrests affable woodworker Miles Danbury, Sammy puts everything on the line to help clear Miles.

As the case comes dangerously close to unraveling, Sammy must stitch the clues together. But the killer has other plans—and if Sammy’s not careful, she may wind up in a perilous knot in A Crafter Knits a Clue, the first warm and woolly yarn of Holly Quinn’s new Handcrafted mysteries.
