My Review

 I had a review all written, but as I was rereading it, I kept changing things and I finally just threw it out and started over. It was too serious for such an exciting and fun story.

Chloe’s near death and seven month coma have left her with the ability to hear and see animals thoughts. She uses this to her advantage working at the Plum Beach Wildlife Park and her ability is often sought.

A new veterinarian, Zane, comes along and her vows of celibacy are in danger. This aplha male calls out to her inner self, jumbling her thoughts and weakening her resolve. She’s angered, afraid, and electrified by him all at the same time, which leads to some fun sparks between these two.

There’s a serious part. Young men are being murdered. First, there’s two. Then a third. And a fourth, and the last two Chloe knew.

There’s a dark side. Who’s killing these young men? The vamps, fae, or evil werewolves? All seem to have their own agendas and all are suspect.

Then there’s the fun, exciting part. The romantic sparks between Chloe and Zane. Chloe’s ability to read minds was limited to just animals. As she honed her skills, she wondered if she’d eventually be able to do the same with humans. She found she could capture Zane’s thoughts,with good reason, and cheated to use this to her advantage. The dialogue between these two kept me smiling as they sparred and came together. They go together like butter and popcorn. Not complete without the other.

And we can’t forget the villains. There’s a mysterious figure that attacks a zebra, sucking it’s blood. Hmm.. And the mutants, werewolves that are turned not born one. I wouldn’t recommend trying to pet one. And then there’s Jazmine. Cold as ice and sharpening her claws. She’s not liking Chloe and Zane’s budding romance at all. He’s supposed to be her mate.

I enjoy a good mystery and romance. Add in the supernatural elements and I’m wanting to cheat, skip ahead to see if what I wanted to happen did and who the killer was. But I didn’t. And the wait was worth it.

My Review

Warning –  This is the second book in The Werewolves of the West Series and I’ll do my best not to include spoilers.

I felt the author really hit her stride right out of the gate in this second book. The action and suspense are palpable right from the first chapter and the romance is a tangled web, with many want to be suitors for Melanie and the newly mated bonds between Chloe and Zane.

I just knew Jazmine and that zebra feasting vamp would get at Chloe. She’s behind bars, framed for multiple murders and Agent Green has nullified her abilities, cutting her off from all who would help her.

War, jealousy, and love all rear their heads in this fun continuation of the series.

When Chloe and Zane were mated she gained a lot of special talents and seemed to have an intuitive sense on how to tap into them. Carol did a great job with this, making Chloe’s easy assimilation believable.

As with the first book, there is so much intrigue and secrets it becomes difficult to tell the good guys from the bad ones. Even some of the bad guys earned my affection. What can I say, they are supernatural and sexy.

Chloe’s best friend Melanie tells her own side of things. She has a secret. She’s jealous of Chloe. Her best friend has attitude and glamour and she often feels like the ugly duckling compared to her.

That all changes when she arrives in Plum Beach to help get Chloe out of jail. The paranormal books she writes earn her six figures a year, and it may be why she was able to accept the news when she finds out most of the people helping Chloe are werewolves, fae, and vamps.

She’s not lacking in suitors either with all these alpha males sniffing at her door, and she feels sexy, lovin every minute of it.

There’s plenty of action, sizzling sex appeal, and so many secrets to be kept and surprises to be revealed. We lost some characters but gained some new ones and this series just got even better.

About the Author:

Carol Van Atta

Like most authors, Carol Van Atta is no stranger to the written word. She penned a short novel at age 12 (somewhat frightening illustrations included, and lots of bunnies were involved), and had a creative writing piece published in her high school newspaper (about David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs LP). Yes, she’s an ex-80’s chick.

Devouring books from numerous genres, Carol developed a deep thirst/hunger for more reading material, and could almost always be found with her nose in a book.

She has contributed to several popular inspirational anthologies and devotional books, and lives in the rainy wetland of Oregon with a terrifying teen (another in college) and a small zoo of animals. She is taking an undetermined hiatus away from inspirational writing to delve into her darker side. (Though you can check out her latest spiritual suspense novel, Soul Defenders). It is rumored that this genre-jumping occurred after Carol discovered too suspicious red marks on her neck, and experienced an unquenchable urge to howl at the moon.

For today I’ll be telling you about The Whaler

by Steve Roach

1771e-addtogoodreadsblack

My Review

Set in the 1800’s, a time when whalers spend as much as two years on board wooden ships, harvesting the blubber and oil from their kills.

A young man seeking passage home enters a bar. While asking the barkeep about available berths, an old salt with one eye tells him he knows of a ship. It just so happens his son is a captain and will be setting out in a few days. While they wait for him to arrive, they get to know each other.

The young man is curious about how the old man lost his eye and he obliges. Thus begins the tale of Captain Grice, the cruelest, most vicious whaler known on the seas.

“The only time I ever saw him crack a smile was when he was knee-deep in whale blood.”

When the crew spots an old whale, probably already dying, they harpoon it. Then Grice does what he loves best. He jumps upon the dying whale and hacks and slashes at it with his ax until he can swing it no more.

This is no ordinary whale though. It harbors something deadly. Welcome to the belly of the beast.

The author did his research. I can’t imagine how awful it was. The stench of death, the hardship, the endless sea, no horizon in sight.

And he gives you a real villain in Captain Grice. The man was evil. He wasn’t like Ahab, obsessed with a single whale. He hated all of them and reveled in their suffering.

 As the old man told the rest of this tale, I could picture the scene. The lights would dim, background noise would fade away, and his raspy voice would chill you to the bone.

Classic horror is what this is.

The Angel Connection

By Judith Anne Barton

1771e-addtogoodreadsblack

In this romantic thriller, mysterious convergences link two lives separated by 100 years.

In 1996, after her reputation, marriage, career as a TV journalist and relationship with her adult son, Chad, are trashed, Morgan Reed starts over in Milltown, Pa., a village in beautiful Bucks County. She feels drawn there, particularly to the 200-year-old former rectory that she buys. In 1895, Evangeline Laury, minister’s wife and mother to a small boy, feels stifled in provincial Milltown. She misses the cultured life she’d led in Philadelphia and her painting, especially when she learns that a local American impressionist, the charismatic Daniel Duvall, is giving lessons. As Morgan, with the help of her handsome but mercurial neighbor Victor, works on a documentary about 1895 Milltown, she uncovers more spooky parallels between her life and Evangeline’s. Both women, desperate for love and connection, are guiltily caught between competing attractions and responsibilities, whether for a husband, lover, child or work, and both women will experience the tragic death of someone close. In her debut novel, Barton writes lush descriptions of beauty and desire, with interesting historical details, many of which seem borrowed from real-life American impressionist painter Daniel Garber and his Bucks County studio at Cuttalossa Farm. (Black-and-white historical photos in the book go uncredited.) Though the narrative works to account for Morgan’s needy self-pity and Evangeline’s blind desire, readers might feel less sympathy than the writer intends, especially since other characters pay the ultimate price for the women’s culpability. In particular, deeply emotional Evangeline’s self-punishing guilt becomes internal melodrama. When Victor very reasonably objects to involving sullen, hard-drinking Chad on the documentary project, it’s a welcome moment of sensibleness: “It is not my problem to save your son.”

Emotional, doom-tinged and spooky, with two deeply flawed heroines.

For today I’ll be telling you about Distance To Empty

by Lee Moan

18137657

1771e-addtogoodreadsblack

My Review

It only took me about 20 minutes to read this. That’s what I love about short stories. That and how well written some of them are. How the author can grab you and keep you totally enthralled.

The dilemma. The gas gauge says 10 miles to empty. Their destination, Barrington Ford, is 11 miles.

Joe sits in the car, his wife Susie asleep beside him, mentally kicking himself for not having the gauge fixed.

It’s been twitchy for a while now and can’t be trusted. So does it have enough gas or not? Should he keep going, hoping the gauge is wrong, or should he head back to the nearest gas station, hoping the gauge is wrong? Knowing his wife will let him have it, he hopes for the best and presses on.

They are close to their destination when Joe wakes up Susie. They both stare out the windshield at the eerie grey mist between them and town. It’s odd that behind and above them the sky is clear and blue. Whatever it is, they’re going to have to drive through it.

Yeah, there have been plenty of books and movies with something in the mist as the story line. The Bremuda Triangle, Stephen King’s The Mist and The Fog come to mind quickly. But Lee was able to make this his own version.

The couples disintegrating relationship, the grotesque things in the mist, the mysterious passenger they pick up. All of this makes for a surprisingly full plot in such a short story.

It never felt confusing, slow, or lacking. The stage is set, things start happening, and then even stranger things happen.

I really liked the huge surprise waiting in the mist. That is where the author owned this story.

The title has more than one meaning. My mind was left to wander, to wonder.

I sure hope there will be more added to this story. I need to know what happens.

Until then, I’m going to read more books by Lee Moan.

The Lost Realm

“Some would call it a twin’s intuition”

~~~~~~
Cover- The Guardians When sixteen-year-old twins Emma and Evin LeFay are suddenly forced to pack their belongings after the tragic murder of their mother, they soon find that the busy city life of Boston, Massachusetts is more than they could have expected…
First are the two mysterious boys that Emma crosses paths with one night, after being caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. She thought she escaped them without getting caught, but it soon becomes apparent to her and Evin after a series of strange events that someone–or rather, several people–seem to be following them.
It’s after a close-run in with a group of menacing creatures, and the sudden aid of the same strange people that have been following them that Emma and Evin quickly realize there is more to Boston than skyscrapers and noisy cars.
Left with no other options and seeking the truth behind their mother’s murder, Emma and Evin accompany their saviors to a place known as Hawthorne Academy. It’s here that the twins soon learn they are part of a supernatural race with rare abilities, known as Dracons, one Otherworld race amongst four other paranormal races that have lived in disguise as humans for centuries.
Being part of an Otherworld race has its drawbacks, however, when Emma and Evin are enrolled for training at Hawthorne after a heated meeting with the Otherworld Council and its leaders. It’s either sink or swim for these Otherworldly twins as they train at the academy and learn to control their unique gifts.
Convinced life couldn’t get much more bizarre, Emma and Evin discover a mysterious archway leading to an entirely different realm that has been lost over time. It’s in this Lost Realm and the Celestial kingdom of Evmurah that the twins are dubbed the Guardians of the Realms, protectors of both the Mortal and Immortal Realms.
It’s Emma and Evin’s job to protect both realms from the darkness that taints them and the mysterious Precursor that seems to want them dead.
The twins learn the masked Stiffs are known as Venators, and are part of a secret society, whose sole purpose is to extinguish all Otherworld beings.
If that’s not enough, strange things are beginning to happen to Emma and Evin. Emma begins having preminitions, and Evin discovers he has the sudden, phenomenal ability to supernaturally heal his own wounds.
Meanwhile, Tristan’s sister is in town, and she’s causing more trouble than good–mainly in Evin’s love life. With two very different girls vying for his attention and only one girl worth chasing after, how can the Guardian possibly be expected to concentrate on much of anything else?
As if they aren’t already overwhelmed enough, the leader of the Boston Otherworld Mafia has taken a sudden interest in the Guardians. “Marco Polo,” as he is called, promises to help Emma and Evin with the Venators–for an unlisted price.
A Haunted Road Trip
Amateur ghost hunter Brett and his friends Gonzo, Jimbo, and Liz are on a road trip with dangerous detours, dreadful dreams and dire warnings. But that won’t keep them from reaching their goal: New Orleans. Along the way they discover that some spirits leave you with more than a hangover and regrets. Can they get there in one piece, or will they be stopped and rest in peace?
The bags are packed, the engine’s running. Turn up the radio and get moving because the road ghosts are waiting, and it’s Four ’til Late.
Four ’til Late is the first book of the Road Ghosts Trilogy.
