Find the diary, break the curse, step through The Looking Glass!

Fifteen-year-old Alice Montgomery wakes up in the lobby of the B&B where she has been vacationing with her family to a startling discovery: no one can see or hear her. The cheap desk lights have been replaced with gas lamps and the linoleum floor with hardwood and rich Oriental carpeting. Someone has replaced the artwork with eerie paintings of Elizabeth Blackwell, the insane actress and rumored witch who killed herself at the hotel in the 1880s. Alice watches from behind the looking glass where she is haunted by Elizabeth Blackwell. Trapped in the 19th-century version of the hotel, Alice must figure out a way to break Elizabeth’s curse—with the help of Elizabeth’s old diary and Tony, the son of a ghost hunter who is investigating the haunted B&B—before she becomes the inn’s next victim.

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING:

“If you’re looking for a good ghost story that’s meant for suspense and not horror, or if you’re just a lover of some really good paranormal magic, this is just the book for you.”JasmynBitten By Romance

I think one of the creepiest things about The Looking Glass was the way it made me feel so claustrophobic. It was similar to the way I felt when I read Stephen King’s Under the Dome–trapped and a bit panicked.”Kelly – Goodreads Reviewer

“It was so different and so beautifully written and detailed that I really could not put this story down and I felt as though I was there with Alice throughout the story. I have read LOTS of paranormal, YA genre books, but this is truly unique!”
Melissa – Simplistic Reviews

Darkness Within Banner 851 x 315

My title for the post suggests a paranormal twister. I’m not referring to a tornado. I mean how this story is so twisted.

Can’t wait to tell you about so enjoy the peek inside and my review!

Darkness Within

The Darkness Series

Book One

Candis Vargo

Genre: Paranormal Thriller

Publisher: Limitless Publishing

Date of Publication: March 10

My Review

After the death of her young son. Mia continues to act like he’s still alive. Her husband, Mike, is at the end of his rope. Nothing will convince her otherwise and  he feels like he’s going crazy.

To save his marriage and his sanity, Mike goes to a psychiatrist and she has something she wants him to try with his wife. Not long afterwards strange things start happening. Something is haunting them, something dark and dangerous.

You may think you know what’s happening since we’ve all read books or seen movies with this plot. I thought I knew what was happening. Then I didn’t. Then I did. And so on.

The author kept me guessing and the story got creepier as the darkness got more violent.

I knew Mia was crazy. Then I thought Mike was crazy. It about drove ‘me’ crazy trying to figure things out.

While I was reading the end I knew what was coming. Then I didn’t. Then I did.

The entire book had be jumping back and forth between knowing and not knowing what was going on. It was as if the author put me in Mike’s shoes, and I was as confused and scared as he was.

This is a creepy story and I recommend it to anyone looking for a paranormal thriller with a great mystery thrown in. Just be prepared to think you do… Then you don’t… Then you do…

A Glimpse inside Darkness Within

Chapter One

The force of the impact with the truck thrust the Jeep forward, throwing Mia deep into her seat as they went nose first into a ditch. What was left of the back of the jeep rolled up over the front. It continued to flip over several times before seeming to levitate in the air after rolling off the embankment. It felt like an eternity, the world moving in slow motion, before it smashed against the icy cold river sending shards of glass and ice throughout the vehicle. As it slowly began to sink Mia automatically reached down to unbuckle herself. After struggling to free herself from the seat belt she reached back for her son.

Her long, dark hair floated through the thickness of the icy water and streams of blood swam around her face. As she turned around everything became hazy and the darkness fought to take away her control. A panic began to set in as her heart raced. She needed to get back to Eli, to unbuckle him…she needed to save her son.

Being a mother she couldn’t care less if she was hurt, she just needed to save her son. Like a tiger protecting her young, it was a mother’s first priority.

As she tried to move into the back seat she reached out to Eli again.

He gently placed his outstretched hand into hers. His eyes, so soft and gentle, stared into his mother’s, whose were full of pain and fear for him. He smiled his sweet innocent smile as if telling her that things were going to be okay.

It was the end of February, a time the weather was supposed to be warming up as it was readying for spring. Supposed to…but of course it wasn’t.

Mia had been trying to avoid what happened. Just moments ago she was talking to her husband on the phone through the Bluetooth she managed to con him into installing, stating that she was going to wait for the storm to pass.

“Hello,” Mikes groggy voice had echoed through the car.

“Hi, Daddy.” Eli’s enthusiasm rang throughout the vehicle. “Dad…Dad, I’m out of school, Dad. And it’s snowing!”

“Oh yeah, buddy,” Mike replied. “Well, I guess I will see you soon then.”

Mia had angled her rear view mirror down to look back at Eli. She placed her index finger in front of her mouth to shush him but smiled underneath it.

Eli puckered his lips out and grabbed them with one hand to keep himself from talking as he gave her a thumbs up.

“Yeah, it’s snowing like crazy.” Mia took her time as she drove. She was never a fan of the winter weather and only liked snow on Christmas Eve and

Christmas Day, any time before or after that she’d prefer it be seventy degrees and sunny. “We’re going to be late for dinner. I think I’m going to pull over when I can manage to even see anything so I don’t slide into a damn ditch.”

When Mia left to pick Eli up from preschool there were just a few flurries floating in the icy wind. Now it had come to near white out conditions, causing her to curse winter even more.

“All right, just take your time and watch out for the crazy people out there. And I came up with an awesome idea for big man’s birthday party. Turning the big five soon, eh, buddy.”

Mia looked in the mirror and saw Eli’s deep brown eyes light up. He hopped up and down in his booster seat with excitement. “Do I get a guitar,

Dad? Daddy, I want a guitar!”

“You’ll have to wait and see, buddy, but I better let you guys go so you can get home. Maybe this snow will be good enough to take you snowmobiling later.”

Mia rolled her eyes and shook her head in frustration. “See you when we get home.”

She was still upset with him over what had happened the night before. She could swear that sometimes it seemed like he’d rather be anywhere but where the man of the house should be at night…home. Gender roles were never really her thing, but to her it always seemed like the man did a better job of protecting the family from intruders.

“Stay safe,” Mike said before he hung up.

After Mike hung up Mia had slowed down even more, trying to find a place to pull over before she got anywhere near the upcoming bridge that crossed the river. She wanted to be out of the way of any oncoming traffic but with the snow falling as hard as it was, it was nearly impossible to see anything.

After a few more minutes of driving the snow let up ever so slightly, enough for her to spot a place where she could pull over. Slowing down to a near stop, she started to turn the wheel.

The distinctive sound of a big rig’s horn snapped her attention to the rear view mirror, still angled for her to see Eli. She snapped her head to the right side mirror and saw a tractor trailer turned sideways, sliding towards her. Her heart raced as she pushed the gas pedal, trying to get out of the way as fast as she could. The wheels seemed to turn in pace and the air horn blared again, but was drowned out by the screeching of metal as it collided.

Everything went black.

Can one boy stand between two kingdoms at war?

Jaevid Broadfeather has grown up as a wartime refugee, hiding from the world because of his mixed racial heritage. He feels his future is hopeless, until a chance encounter with a wild dragon lands him in Blybrig Academy—a place usually forbidden to anyone but the rich and royal. But Jaevid’s case is special; no dragon has voluntarily chosen a rider in decades, so the proud riders of Blybrig must begrudgingly let him join their brotherhood despite his bloodline. Lieutenant Sile Derrick, a sternly tempered man with a mysterious past, becomes his instructor and immediately takes a peculiar interest in Jaevid’s future.

While struggling through the rigorous physical demands of training, things begin to go awry. Jaevid witnesses the king’s private guards kidnapping Sile in the dead of night. When none of the elder riders are willing to help him, Jaevid begins a dangerous adventure to save his instructor.

Everything Jaevid learned at the academy will now be put to the ultimate test.

The first thing I thought was that’s a long title. LOL

Then I spied the cover and went, OOOH!

Come on in and get to know Yvette.

Enjoy my review.

~~~
TheLightAtTheEndOfJudgmentAndDay
My Review
Yvette lives two lives. One as an up and coming violinist. The other as a ghost buster of Heaven.
Her talent as a violinist gets her bookings all over and that works well for her night job as a land-walker, a witness, sending ghosts on their way. She can’t send them to Heaven or Hell but she can force them to face Judgement Day, where their fate is decided.
Yvette’s agent moves his office into the Folsom Building, unaware that many tenants are moving out. Bad things are happening, and her next mission is clear. Rid the building of the ghosts and keep her secret while doing it.
This becomes harder as a paranormal investigation team has been hired to clear the building and one of them is close to discovering her secret. She’s an angel and it’s death to those who discover what she is.
I liked Yvette. She was tough yet vulnerable. Going into the building, she faced a slew of ghosts and demons and engaged them with ninja wrath. A ninja angel, how cool is that?
I was a bit confused when Yvette ended up in the hospital so much and people too easily accepted her excuses. I’d be more suspect, push harder for the real reasons. Perhaps the author chose to do it this way to keep the story moving along as it isn’t a long book. It could also be because she doesn’t let anyone get too close. Her agent, Dennis, is more interested in dollars and bookings. And her nurse, Carson, while knowing there’s more to her injuries than meets the eye, concentrates more on getting her back on her feet.
Adding in the husband and wife team of paranormal investigators, Glenn and Albert, made the story more fun. I really liked them and they came close to stealing the limelight in the second half of the story. They knew Yvette was more than she appeared to be, and she had to be careful they didn’t find out, which made her vulnerable when battling the entities and added to her injuries.
I see potential for a really good series here. I do enjoy the idea behind this story and a kick butt heroine and would like to read more.
4 Stars
Synopsis
Violinist and angel, Yvette Mills has spent almost 200 years living among humans while rounding up ghosts to send into Judgment. Back on the mend from her last confrontation with a malevolent entity, she’s ready to reenter the classical-music scene. One problem. She’s not facing one ghost. She’s facing hundreds with a few demonic entities sprinkled in.
Dozens of tenants have left the Folsom Building in downtown Charlotte because of the strange goings on. When Yvette’s agent goes for the bargain-basement rental prices and now has an office there, her mission is clear. Rid the building of the paranormal vermin to keep him and the few tenants left, safe. It won’t be easy when a psychic, who’s leading a team of paranormal investigators, discovers she can see ghosts, too. If they discover she’s truly an angel sent from the heavens, she’ll be the first to find herself thrown into the pits of hell.
Check out the Excerpt
The elevator wobbled. I touched the wall to make sure there was something to hold onto in case the next wobble meant something else. I watched as the green numbers incremented by one on the wall above my head.
Another wobble.
What kind of rickety elevator was this? Surely, this wasn’t the top-of-the-line building on South Tryon Road, but the least I expected was to get to the nineteenth floor in one piece.
The lights blacked out and the elevator slowed to a stop. I stood on a dark, metal box with nervousness creeping across my shoulders. All sorts of horrible images about what could happen next assaulted my thoughts.
I should’ve been used to situations like this.
After a deep breath, I steadied my nerves. Death by elevator would be a new one, given the number of other ways I had died over the years. The only good thing about it would be I’d never feel the moment of impact. God was good.
Calmness blanketed me. I reached inside my purse and pulled out my cell phone. I pressed the button on the side to light up the screen.
A screaming, ethereal face appeared and disappeared with the speed of a flasher standing on a street corner and exposing himself to a pedestrian. That was why the elevator really stopped. Sighing, I slipped my phone in my purse and crossed my arms.
The lights on the panel lit up on all of the floors, the dim light giving my light brown skin a slightly darker hue than normal. I was only on the eighth floor.
“Are you done?” I asked, glancing at the dark ceiling. “Because I have to go.”
The lights came on, dousing me in brightness. However, the lights flashed and reshaped themselves into a downward arrow.
The elevator dropped…and slammed to a stop, throwing me off balance.
Pissed, I picked myself off the floor and dusted off any crumbs or dirt that decided to cling. “If you want to scare me, you might want to make sure I’m on a high enough floor that I won’t survive the fall. And by survive, I mean die and don’t come back…this time.”
A long pause and nothing happened. Then, the button for the nineteenth floor lit up and the elevator ascended at normal pace again. Whoever thought scaring someone like me was a good idea or was possible must have gotten a clue. I normally didn’t go around exposing my aura to anyone unless they pushed me to that point. I wasn’t pushed yet.
I got off on my floor and continued down the hall until I came to one of the smallest offices in the building. Maybe the entire block, for that matter.
I expected more of Dennis Furze, but I guess this was more his speed, since he preferred to work at home. This place was more for show whenever he needed to meet with people other than his clients. It was also the first time I visited in the three weeks that he had opened up his new digs for his clients.
When I entered, I let the elderly receptionist know my name and my appointment time.
“There she is.” Dennis traipsed into the lobby and gave me a firm handshake before pulling me close for a peck on my cheek. He reminded me of a spoiled, rich kid who looked somewhat naïve, but had the wheeling-and-dealing prowess of a stockbroker on the Wall Street floors. “How’s my girl? You practicing for your big day tomorrow? Your reentrance back into the classical music society?”
Despite my smile and the earlier attempt at a good scare, I wasn’t moved. “No worries, Dennis. You’ll have your meal ticket again tomorrow night—I swear.”
“Meal ticket? Is that all you think you are to me?”
“Yes, considering you’re my booking agent and you take a certain percentage of all the gigs you put together whether they’re for me as a soloist or my ensemble.”
“Okay, but I also care about you as a person.”
“I also happen to be one of your considerable draws.”
About Author Marcia Colette
Marcia Colette
Bestselling author Marcia Colette didn’t discover her love for reading until her late teens when she started reading John Saul and progressed to works by Bentley Little, Stephen King and Laurell K. Hamilton. Her reading tastes convinced her to write paranormals where curses cause people to shift into spiders, psychotic and telekinetic mothers are locked away in attics, and murderous doppelgangers are on a rampage. Let’s not forget about the hunky werecheetah coalitions who live throughout North Carolina. As long as she can make it believable, that’s all that matters.
Born and raised in upstate New York, Marcia now lives in North Carolina with her mom and beautiful daughter. They’re not raising zombies in the backyard. There aren’t any hellhounds living in the den, only a rabbit and a cockatiel. So where she gets her ideas is as much a mystery to her as anyone else.
The best place to find her–when she’s not stirring up trouble–is on her blog where she loves connecting with readers.
“Nice scrubs,” Frank said, sounding relaxed for the first time all day, er night. I had to give him credit, he wasn’t laughing.
“Apparently, these were the only scrubs they could rustle up on short notice,” I muttered, determined not to give any one of the cretins I worked with the satisfaction of losing my temper. I pulled my very recently washed blonde hair into a braid and tossed it back over my shoulder in agitation.
“They’re cute,” Frank said with a big grin. Behind him, Furball was snickering. While the boys may not get along at the best of times, for some reason, when it came to me being the brunt of a cruel joke, they seemed to find camaraderie. I, on the other hand, was not amused.
“They have bunnies all over them,” I pointed out unimpressed, “which I imagine goes down well in a ward with patients under the age of twelve. This, however, is not the pediatric ward.” I tossed a glare toward Elvis and Abbie. Both were engrossed in their paperwork. I was so not buying it. I leaned up against the counter and crossed my arms to sulk.
Frank kept smiling, and I swear he was leaning closer for a kiss. Oh boy. Suddenly he stopped. Squinting, he moved in. Let me clarify, he leaned away from my mouth and closer to examine my top. Talk about disappointed.
“It looks like someone’s drawn on it,” he murmured. He fingered one of the drawings.
I huffed a sigh and picked up my files again, moving toward my next patient. Frank followed. There was no way he was going to let this one drop.
“Do the bunnies have fangs?” he asked incredulously.
 My Review
 Emma is not a demure southern belle. She’s a true southern gal after my own heart. Blurts out what pops in her mind. Not afraid to look crazy. Dives in feet first and to heck with the consequences.
Life gets crazy for Emma after a plastic Santa falls off the roof of Artie’s Deli and Meat store and knocks her out. When she comes to she can see ghosts. Everyone thinks she’s either gone around the bend or suffering from ‘funeral trauma.’
Emma soon knows better when Ruthie Sue, co-owner of the Sleepy Hollow Inn, along with Emma’s grandmother Zula Mae, is found dead at the bottom of the stairs. Her ghost comes to Emma, adamant she was pushed and wants her murderer brought to justice.
Ruthie and Zula Fae were arch enemies and that puts Zula in the spotlight as a prime suspect. Emma has to put on her sleuthing cap and get to the bottom of it as another person falls victim.
Emma and her older sister, Charlotte, operate The Eternal Slumber Funeral Home, owned by their grandmother Zula Mae.
I could just see Emma speeding pell mell through town in her hearse, arguing with the ghost of Ruthie Sue, and the people with their mouths hanging up, shaking their heads as they declare Emma has lost her marbles.
The only one that doesn’t chalk her antics up to lunacy is the handsome Sheriff Jack Henry. He sees more than craziness in Emma’s information. She knows thing only Ruthie Sue could know.
I enjoyed the blooming romance between Jack Henry and Emma Lee. They may not be school kids anymore, but their attraction to each other is bumbling, teasing, and sweet.
I felt so at home in this book. I live in the south and can tell you that these characters are genuine, right down to two first names.
The mystery isn’t obvious and the antics of all of the characters had me snickering.
A light hearted cozy mystery that tickled my funny bone, I do declare.
My Review
This is the second book in The Ghostly Southern Mysteries Series and is just as fun as the first book.
Emma first began seeing ghosts when a plastic Santa fell off the roof of Artie’s deli and meat the and knocked her out cold. When she came to in the hospital Chicken Teater was there. That couldn’t be as his body had been seen to at her very own funeral home, Eternal Slumber, and she’d seen him buried.
Everyone in town saw her talking to a ghost and just scratched it off as crazy Emma and her ‘funeral trauma, kind of like PTSD.
Emma soon learns it’s not just hallucinations and is caught up in the murder of Ruthie, her grandma’s nemesis. That placed Zula Fae right in the crosshairs of sexy Sheriff Jack Henry, Emma’s school crush. Emma, with the help of Ruthie’s ghost, sticks her pretty little nose into the investigation as more people are attacked.
That first ghostly case lands her where she is now. When Ruthie Sue finally moved on to wherever ghosts go, she started telling other ghosts that hadn’t moved on about Emma’s gift as a Betweener medium. She can see and here the ghosts of murdered people that are stuck and can’t move on. Just what Emma needs. She helped solve Ruthie Sue’s murder and now she’s sending her clients from the beyond.
So now she stands by the grave of Chicken Teater, local chicken farmer, as his casket is being exhumed.
Her list of suspects is vast as pretty much the whole town is gawking behind the police tape.
Could it be Chicken’s widow, Marla Maria, the beauty queen? Could it be she was jealous of the competition from Mrs. Cluckington, Chicken’s prize winning hen? As Emma looks at all of the faces, she has her work cut out for her.
The Kentucky Cave Festival is gearing up to begin and Emma wants to get this case wrapped up faster than you can say Bees on a Bicycle.
I think it’s sweet how one glimpse into Jack Henry’s eyes can make the butterflies flutter in Emma’s stomach. She’s smitten and so is he. These too are so cute together.
There’s no lacking in colorful, quirky characters and the fun and mystery just keeps on rolling. Feathers fly as Emma leaves no tomb stone unturned to get to the bottom of it.
You don’t have to read the first book to dip your toes into this one, but I’d say grab the first book too and get twice the fun from the beginning.
Synopsis
There’s a ghost on the loose—and a fox in the henhouse
Four years ago, the Eternal Slumber Funeral Home put Chicken Teater in the ground. Now undertaker Emma Lee Raines is digging him back up. The whole scene is bad for business, especially with her granny running for mayor and a big festival setting up in town. But ever since Emma Lee started seeing ghosts, Chicken’s been pestering her to figure out who killed him.
With her handsome boyfriend, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, busy getting new forensics on the old corpse, Emma Lee has time to look into her first suspect. Chicken’s widow may be a former Miss Kentucky, but the love of his life was another beauty queen: Lady Cluckington, his prize-winning hen. Was Mrs. Teater the jealous type? Chicken seems to think so. Something’s definitely rotten in Sleepy Hollow—and Emma Lee just prays it’s not her luck.
