Poisonous Dream
Yumoyori Wilson
(Starlight Gods #5)
Publication date: February 9th 2018
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance

Don’t you sometimes wish that everything was just a dream?

My name is Daniel Moore, future heir of Realm Ten, ArchAilennia.

I’ve never felt regret like this before, such turmoil clinging to my very soul. I had vowed once long ago to never endure such pain and torment. Yet, such a vow has already been broken and this time, it’s to someone far more dear.

My princess is everything to me. She’s my light when the shadows attempt to cloud my way, my beacon of hope when doubt aims to cripple me, and now she’s my greatest sorrow because I can’t face her. To look into those hollow, turquoise eyes and realize I’m the cause of such agony breaks my heart.

Could she forgive me for my error of judgment? Would she even glance my way for the pain I’ve made her endure? Only time will tell.

~In Stars We Trust~

Recommended for 18+ audience, containing mature sexual content, violence and strong language. TRIGGER WARNING- Anyone who experiences triggers due to self-harm, please do NOT read this book. You have been warned.

NOTE: POISONOUS DREAM is written in CANADIAN ENGLISH – meaning both American and British English is used.

Enjoy the excerpt:

“I’m aware. I’ll do any favor you need me to.”

“Does that include you marrying the woman you’re supposed to be engaged to?”

I frowned, my hands clenching to fists in an attempt to hold down my anger. I didn’t want to wake Ryder up and let anyone else know I was having this conversation.

“If it means the Princess will be able to walk again…I’ll do it,” I whispered. My heart was already hammering against my chest, trying to keep my left foot from tapping the floor in a rage.

“Even though it will shatter your heart? Even though you wouldn’t be able to get out of it, no matter how much you later begged?” she questioned, dropping the pen and rising to her feet before making her way over to me.

I stilled, trying to keep my breathing calm.

“Yes.”

She sat on the armrest, looking down at me before she tilted my head upward with her hand that was now under my chin.

Her glowing eyes met mine, making a hint of fear flutter through me as I saw her seriousness.

“Even if it broke Makoto’s heart? What if your one sacrifice to make her happy backfired? You wouldn’t regret this?” Her voice was low, like an enemy ready to torture its victim.

I tried to open my mouth to agree, my lip trembling as I tried to muster the words. I needed to do this for the Princess. If it’s for her, I’d give my life and soul for her to be happy and smile again

The Dream Groom by Taylor Hart

Scar Walker, professional football player and ex Navy Seal, only wanted to focus on getting his gym built for military vets while he was in San Diego. He didn’t want to take crap from his brother, he didn’t want to deal with a lippy waitress, and he really didn’t want random people calling him on the phone.

Shayla Castle came to San Diego to finally live out her childhood dream. When she accidentally calls the mysterious phone number left on her table while waitressing, she never anticipated it would be the handsome jerkface soldier who chewed her out that morning. It confuses her even more when the same jerkface shows up the next night and saves her from an attacker.

She never would have imagined she and soldier boy would start talking every night and she really never imagined he would convince her to let him do her bucket list together. After a hike at Torrey Pines, a helicopter ride, and surfing at Oceanside…she finds she just might be falling for this soldier boy.

When things get heated, she’s left with a choice—let go of the past or lose a new dream she was just starting to discover.

A sweet, fast, love story and an Adonis hero. Yumm!

My favorite of the Titan romances so far! Who can resist the nicknames, the code words, the bucket list, or the pillow talk?

Scar is simply a hero through and through. He may be my favorite hero of all time.

Scar and Shayla were fabulous together! I loved the fireworks that sparked when they met. Scar was tough on the outside with a heart of gold. Don’t miss this fast-paced, romantic story!

“What are you doing?” His words were stilted, and his discomfort made her relax more.
“I’m arguing the merits or justification that Juliet had for killing herself when she thought Romeo was dead.”
For a beat, he didn’t answer, like he was weighing his response on his tongue. “She was stupid. Plain and simple. Life is precious. Killing herself was a huge waste.”
Shayla disagreed. “She was in love. She was heartbroken.”
He barked out a laugh. “Life is worth more than love. She was reckless. She was too young to be messing around with a thug like Romeo. He shouldn’t have married her in the middle of the night. He would have gotten his throat cut if her father had known. That’s why he did it in the cloak of darkness.”
That was a valid argument, actually. She smiled. “Cloak of darkness, really? Should I put that in my paper?”
“Hey, I won’t complain if you feel the need to quote me.” His voice had gone husky.
Intrigued, she pushed aside her laptop and leaned against the back of her bed, thinking how this was getting interesting. “Why can’t you tell me about the scar now?”
He sighed. “You have no filter, do you, Kansas?”
The way he said “Kansas” sounded so good. Feeling a bit bad, she shook her head. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine. Seriously, another night. Let’s talk about your paper.”
“Sure.” She went back to the topic, even though she really wanted to know now. “Juliet had pledged her dying love to Romeo. Juliet trusted Romeo.”
“Still stupid and childish.”
“Was it? Because by Romeo’s actions we see that Romeo loved and trusted Juliet. He didn’t let it stand. She didn’t die by herself. He died too.”
He grunted. “So sacrifice for love is always worth it?”
“Always,” she said softly, feeling more convinced as she said it. “That’s why it was pretty awesome you jumped in to help me even though I don’t deserve it and you didn’t know me.”
“But I didn’t love you,” Scar pointed out. He said it so bluntly, she was thrown off balance. “I jumped in because I believe in humanity, goodness, honor, and duty.”
She found herself liking this man. A lot. “Love of country before love of self.”
“You do what’s right because it’s the right thing to do,” he said. “I had SEAL guys who proved that to me. Over and over.”
Her respect for him went up a notch. “You’re a SEAL?”
He cleared his throat. “Was. Got shot. Discharged with honors. I had the option of being regular military but turned it down.”
“What do you do currently?”
“Play football for the Texas Titans.”
This was unreal. She wasn’t really into football, but Jason had loved the Titans. “You play professional football?”
He scoffed. “I pretty much just get throttled most of the time. I’m on the practice team.”
She considered what SEALs did, then tried to imagine what it was like on the practice team. “So you’re obviously masochistic.”
He laughed.
“What are you doing in San Diego?”
He cleared his throat. “I’m actually in San Diego for three to four weeks working on a project to design a facility for military vets. It’s a program that focuses on helping vets through sparring. There will also be counselors to help them and a coffee shop where they can hang out. No one would show up just to be psychoanalyzed, but if we can get them in for sparring and socializing, we can really help the ones who need it.”
She cleared her throat. “I have to admit I’m a bit intimidated by you.”
“No,” he said, sounding shocked. “Don’t be.”
“How old are you?” she blurted, regretting the words as soon as they tumbled out. “Sorry, the no filter thing.” She cringed, knowing she sounded like an idiot and was grateful for the distance of the telephone while talking to him.
“Ah, you’re breaking my heart already, Shayla.”
Her heart rate kicked up a notch. Was he going to answer the question?
“I’m twenty-eight,” he said. “How old are you?”
“Twenty-one.”
He sighed. “Is that okay with you?”
Feeling uncertain, she said, “Yeah, that’s fine. I mean, whatever. It’s not like we’re dating or anything.”
He chuckled, a wonderful sound. “That dispels any intentions I had.”
Butterflies rushed through her and she knew she’d be blushing. Checking the time, she saw it was almost eleven-thirty. “I gotta go. Paper is due by midnight, and I still have to finish it.”
“Okay,” he said. “Can we talk tomorrow?”
Happiness surged through her. She pushed it away, not wanting to think it meant anything. He was way too old for her. “Sure.”
“Well, then, I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”

Two different worlds – one unique connection – a whole lot of love.

Valentine’s Day – an annual holiday dedicated to love, promoting couples to emphasize their love through gifts and celebration.

Makoto Heart spent her life trapped in a dark cell, never knowing the day existed or experienced love until her star knights. When three of her star knights – Kai, Marcus, and Elias – have the opportunity to bring her to Earthala, she’s given the chance to enjoy a four-day countdown to the celebration.

Scarlet Sinclair has dreaded February 14th. Her feelings stemmed from the reminder that she usually spent the day sitting alone, binge watching chick flicks on Netflix and devouring chocolate she bought for herself. But, this year would be different – Ethan, Junho, and Christian make a promise to prove to her that Valentine’s has more benefits than chocolate, and they’d use the next four days to prove it.

Will they each get more love than they bargained for?

“Meow.”

Christian groaned while I turned my head, noticing Moonlight sitting on the two-seat sofa— his turquoise eyes staring at Christian.

“Please don’t tell me you took his doll again,” I huffed.

“I don’t have it,” Christian argued.

“Why is Moonlight here then?” I countered.

“Cause he loves interrupting me when I want to have some damn alone time with you,” Christian argued.

I sighed, patting my thighs.

Moonlight hopped off the chair to the floor, making his way to where I sat in Christian’s lap. He leaped onto my lap, sitting patiently as I pet him gently.

“Hey you. Why are you interrupting us when Christian doesn’t have your doll?” I cooed, enjoying the feel of Moonlight’s soft black fur.

“Meow.”

He hid it, but it’s not here,” Risuki mumbled in my mind.

I sighed, turning to Christian who grumbled under his breath.

“Junnie has it,” he admitted reluctantly.

“Why does Junnie have his doll?”

“Because I put it in her purse.”

“Because?”

“Your familiar has a vendetta against me and is trying to ruin the one day I have with my girlfriend before Valentine’s Day and I didn’t want him crashing it, again,” Christian complained.

I blushed, feeling touched by his frustration regarding our lack of alone time.

Well, he shouldn’t have hidden it. Could have asked nicely,” Risuki mumbled.

Before the Leap by Liz Isaacson

The ranch foreman, a fiery new designer, and an old flame that could burn them both…

Jace Lovell only has one thing left after his fiancé abandons him at the altar: his job at Horseshoe Home Ranch. He throws himself into becoming the best foreman the ranch has ever had—and that includes hiring an interior designer to make the ranch owner’s wife happy.

Belle Edmunds is back in Gold Valley after she lost her job at a prestigious design firm in California. She’s working for a conglomerate, but she’s desperate to build a portfolio that she can use to start her own firm in Montana. She applies for the job at Horseshoe Home, and though Jace and Belle grew up together, they’ve never seen eye to eye on much more than the sky is blue.

The spark between them now that they’re adults can’t be denied, and as Jace and Belle attempt to work together, they also fight their growing attraction to each other. But Jace isn’t anywhere near forgiving his fiancé, and he’s not sure he’s ready for a new relationship with someone as fiery and beautiful as Belle. Can she employ her patience while he figures out how to forgive so they can find their own brand of happily-ever-after?

Praise for Second Chance Ranch, Book 1 in the Amazon #1 bestselling Three Rivers Ranch Romance series: “Isaacson artfully combines disparate threads in her contemporary Western Christian romance.” ~BookLife, Publisher’s Weekly

“I loved that both Jace and Belle are strong people dealing with vulnerabilities. Liz’s characters are real people! I appreciate how she described Jace’s emotional struggle resulting from being jilted as well as Belle’s desire for everything to look okay on the outside.Having read all of the Three Rivers Ranch series, I enjoyed the move to Montana, following Tom Lovell’s extended family.” ~Nerkalj, Amazon Reviewer

“A captivating story of love. A wonderfully clean romance that held my attention all the way through. The characters in this story are in real everyday situations where you hurt, and you lash out, and you hurt more because you did. True to life stories are the kind I like best. They help me deal with my own failings and feelings. With all that, these stories show that with God all things are possible, that He helps us heal. I highly recommend this book!” ~Barbara W., Amazon Reviewer

Three more interviews, and still Jace didn’t see something in the folders—or the applicants—he thought might fit at Horseshoe Home Ranch. Finally, only one folder remained on his desk. He didn’t bother to open it. All the designers had brought a copy of their designs for the different spaces on the ranch.

Landon opened the door and said, “Miss Belle.”

Jace snapped his head up, ice sinking through his chest, coating his lungs and internal organs in stiff blocks he’d never escape. Why hadn’t—?

“Well, look at you.” Belle strode forward, her luxurious auburn hair flowing behind her like a curtain. She’d pinned back only the very front, leaving the rest to frame her high cheekbones, her bright green eyes, and her very glossed lips.

Jace yanked his attention away from those lips, which had always intrigued him. “Look at me?” he asked, making a conscious effort not to reach up and smooth down his beard like he did when he wanted to look his best. “Look at you. What happened? Did Sacramento run out of red lipstick? You had to come all the way to Gold Valley to get stocked up?”

“Ha ha.” She swept him from head to toe. “I see you’re still wearing that ridiculous hat.”

“Everyone wears these hats,” he shot back. “We’re cowboys.”

“Yes, well, most decent men buy a replacement every few years.” She sniffed as she perched on the edge of the chair across from his desk and pulled a folder from her purse. No briefcase bag. No pretentious heels—Belle didn’t need them. She stood almost as tall as her brother, Landon.

The snake, Jace thought as he rounded the desk and took his seat. Landon should’ve told him his sister had applied. Growing up, Jace had never seen eye-to-eye with the redhead, though he did enjoy trading jabs with her when she visited from her hoity-toity job at a design firm in Sacramento.

Instead of focusing on her tight black jeans and flowing top of cobalt blue—which he thought made her hair look positively decadent—he flipped open the folder to check her address. “You moved back?”

She shrugged one shoulder, the silky blouse she wore slipping a little. “My parents are on a six-month service mission in Africa. I’m taking care of the house.”

He returned his gaze to the folder, which was safer than drinking in Belle’s curves. “Mm hm.” He’d heard that before. Pretty princess left home, and instead of admitting that the world had chewed her up, she came home “to take care of the house.”

“You must be tired.” Her tone, which someone less experienced than Jace could’ve misinterpreted to be sympathetic, caused him to abandon the folder.

“Why do you say that?” Jace knew Belle’s body didn’t actually house sympathetic bones, even though she dressed it up nice and sprayed intoxicating, lilac-scented perfume across her collarbone. His gaze dropped to that spot, and her golden skin made his blood run a little faster.

“You didn’t even make a joke about me taking care of the house.”

Jace opened his mouth to say something, but closed it when nothing came to mind. “It’s been a long day. Let’s get this over with.” With effort, he closed her folder and shoved his traitorous thoughts about Belle’s attractiveness to the back of his mind. “Did you bring your portfolio?”

Illegally Wedded by Jennifer Griffith

He needs a promotion. She needs to stay in the country.

Piper Quinn has a great thing going. She’s young, talented, and the sole chef at Du Jour, San Antonio’s hottest lunch bistro. She and her business partner just have to stay open one year to be eligible for the coveted Texas Star.

Days before eligibility though, Piper gets terrible news: she’s getting deported. To New Zealand. Where her parents have joined a hobbit cult.

Attorney Zach Travis can’t seem to break into the partnership bracket at his big, respected firm—despite his stellar record. Then, Zach hears a rumor his bachelor status may be holding him back, and he needs a wife to advance his career. The girl at the bistro is an intriguing candidate.

As Piper shares her desperate plea for legal help, Zach realizes he can fix both their dilemmas—with a marriage certificate. However, their plan puts them in the cross-hairs of more than one vindictive enemy. Worse, neatly ending their marriage may be tricky due to a sparking chemistry neither Zach nor Piper can ignore.

“I have to really love a book to give the perfect 5 stars but this one deserved it! …Well written characters and plot. Would DEFINITELY recommend this book.” –Melanie Pontius

“If I could I would give this 10 stars – or one BIG Texas Star (read the book you’ll see why that’s important). Such a compelling situation and full as life characters. I even found myself dreaming about Piper and Zack one night. And the ending – so full of all the right feels I had tears in my eyes.” – NMW

“This book had me mad at my phone for not holding a charge just a little longer!” –LC

“Everything about this book is brilliant … the characters, the story, the food, the twists and the romance. Add the exceptional, funny and original support characters and stories .. biker granny, Hobbits, tiny dog, Neil Diamond … and you have a beautifully written, clever, clean romance that you won’t want to put down. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, it is a definite must read for everyone.” – lcr

“That leaves you with the one glaring choice remaining, marriage.” The word made Zach’s mouth go unexpectedly dry, and his heart started pounding, neither of which effects he’d anticipated. After countless court appearances and arguments in front of judges and the wealthiest property owners of the largest state in the continental U.S., he’d never gotten wobbly like this.

But he re-collected his chutzpah, pressing back the nerves that he refused to let dominate.

“And if you’ll have me,” he cleared his throat, Piper’s pure green eyes suddenly glued to him and making his heart thunder, “that marriage could be to me.”

The words bounced across the water like a dragonfly, zipping away, never to return.

I have such a good book to share today. I finally got my hands on the first in Katie Ruggle’s Rocky Mountain K9 Unit Series.

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I love character driven stories. And this one has a bomb sniffing K9 officer. I couldn’t wait to dive in.

First, there’s Jules Jackson. She rescued her younger siblings from cruel relatives and is on the run. Help from an unexpected source lands her and the kids in the picturesque town of Monroe in the Rocky Mountains.  But maybe hiding in a small town, even with new identities, isn’t the best idea. Those pursuing her won’t stop searching.

Next up is Theo Bosco. I love that name. He’s reeling from the loss of his canine partner to cancer and his human partner to suicide.. The officer leaves behind a four legged officer that needs help adjusting. Can these two damaged beings bond and overcome their losses?

I had such fun with Jules and her siblings. She’s taken on a lot and the kids are a handful. As they settle into their rundown new home there’s some fun incidents. Like when the stove caught fire and almost burned down the house. I don’t know how she does it. Juggling a new life with a bunch of young kids, worrying about being found and holding down a waitress job. You’ve gt to admire her determination and love for her family.

Theo is taciturn and withdrawn. He doesn’t want a new canine partner and the dog doesn’t want anything to do with him or police work. He just happens to be in the neighborhood and spies the smoke pouring out of Jules’ house and rushes to help. Turns out a rat had built a nest in the old stove. More smoke than fire. At least as far as the stove goes.

Jules is fighting a growing attraction to Theo and Theo has no time for a woman. But the grieving dog, Viggy, and the kids are instant friends and that leads to more encounters and romance keeps growing. I liked the dilemma here. Jules is hiding and she’s falling for a police officer, someone she should be avoiding like the plague.

It was hard to listen to parts of this story about Viggy. The dog was so traumatized and I felt so bad for him. I couldn’t help but hope that Viggy and Theo would form a bond and help each other.

With the fear of discovery and a sinister evil waiting to strike, its not all fun and romance. The suspense builds as a school shooting occurs and its heart pounding action right up to the end. It came as a total surprise to find out who was behind all of the mayhem.

I had been wanting to try this series. Seen it around. And I thought I might enjoy it. I loved it. I’m hooked. And I am now starting On The Chase, the second in book in this fabulous series.

 Read by Callie Beaulieu

Callie did a super job narrating this story. Her switch from adult to child and male to female was flawless. She especially nailed it with one of the boys, who stutters. And with the subtle southern accent of Jules. It was a pleasure to listen to her and I’m happy she will be continuing with this series.

Synopsis

Grieving the death of his partner, Theo Bosco has no room in his life for distractions. Though his instincts scream that he should avoid Juliet “Jules” Jackson, he can’t seem to stay away. It doesn’t help that Theo’s new K9 companion has fallen head over paws with Jules’s rambunctious family.

Or that when he’s with her, Theo finally knows peace.

When Jules rescued her siblings, whisking them away to the safety of the beautifully rugged Colorado Rockies, she never expected to catch the eye—or the heart—of a cop. Yet as Jules struggles to fight her growing attraction to the brooding K9 officer, another threat lurks much closer to home . . .

And this time, there’s no escape.

Blue Moon Kisses by Cindy Roland Anderson

At age twelve, Ashlee Nichols fell in love with her brother’s best friend, Beau Jacobsen. Everyone thought she was cute and that her crush was simply that…a crush. But her young heart had known he was the one, and she had planned on marrying him as soon as she was old enough. Unfortunately, when she confessed her feelings to Beau, he’d laughed, patted her on the head and told her he was flattered. Sure, Beau had been twenty-two at the time, but she knew she wouldn’t always be a little girl. Just when she turned eighteen and was finally old enough to date him, Beau joined the Army and was deployed to Afghanistan. Now, six years later, Beau is back in Mitchel Creek, Georgia for a few weeks. He’s hotter than ever…and still ten years older, something he can’t seem to get past. He still sees Ashlee as a glorified little sister…or does he?

Blue Moon Kisses was well worth the wait. I anxiously awaited this sweet clean romance and was not disappointed. I was engaged from the first line and didn’t want the story to end. The author has a fun writing style and I loved getting to know this couple as they navigated the obstacles in their relationship. There are some funny and heartwarming moments you will enjoy- Diane, Amazon Reader

This book had me laughing, smiling, and wanting to read it all over again!- Jessie C, Amazon Reader

This was the perfect ending to The Georgia Moon books. I’ve been waiting for Ashlee and Beau’s story for a while now. I was NOT disappointed! I loved it. It perfectly captured their romance. If you haven’t read this series you need to – Sarah, Amazon Reader

That was all Beau needed to hear. He excused himself and made his way back to the buffet table. Several desserts were available to guests, but the pecan pie must have been popular. There was only one slice left. Just as he reached for the plate, someone else snatched the pie out from under him.

“Sorry, but I got it first.”

Recognizing the voice, he turned around and found Ashlee Nichols standing behind him. “That was my piece of pie,” he said, trying to sound annoyed.

“Not anymore.” She took a bite and made a big production of how good it tasted.

Beau watched her with amusement while taking his first real look at her in six years. He’d expected her to look exactly like Taylin, but there were subtle differences he’d never noticed before. Like the color of her eyes. They were a shade lighter, reminding him of a cove in the Mediterranean Sea he’d once vacationed at during his time abroad. Her mouth curved up, creating a slight dimple in her right cheek. Funny, Beau didn’t remember her having a dimple before.

Realizing he’d been staring, he gently cleared his throat. “You better hope they have more in the kitchen.”

“They don’t.” She used her fork to cut another bite and held it out toward him. “But I’m willing to share.”

Beau wasn’t sure why the comment made the back of his neck feel on fire. This was Ashlee—his eyes swept over her aqua-blue colored dress that accentuated curves he didn’t remember her having—just not a teenage version of Ashlee.

Whoa. Had he just checked out Chase’s little sister? Warmth flooded his chest, and he took a step away from her. “Thanks, but I need to cut back on carbs.”

“Right.” She twirled the fork around and made a slow perusal of him.

“What?” he said, feeling slightly off-balance under her scrutiny.

“I’m just imaginin’ what it would be like to run my fingers through your hair.”

Beau was grateful he had hair. He was positive the heat flushing his face would’ve made his scalp turn red too.

“Leave the poor guy alone,” Chase said, coming up beside his little sister.

“Where’s the fun in that?”

Rubbing the back of his neck, Beau glanced at Chase and tried to regain some normalcy. “Can you believe she stole the last piece of pecan pie?”

“Yes.”

“Hey,” she said with a laugh, “I offered to share.”

Beau watched her take another bite, an act that shouldn’t make his pulse kick up a notch.

Miss Leslie’s Secret by Jennifer Moore

Decorated war hero Conall Stewart has spent ten years envisioning his return to his beloved Scottish Highlands. But now, with the days of battle finally behind him, it seems that his dreams of home have been in vain: the land of his youth lies in ruins, and his family is gone. Though he will never stop searching for his kin, Conall knows he must begin again. But when he takes on a rented farm in a nearby town, he finds far more than the fresh start he was looking for . . . After catching a mischievous local lad stealing, Conall returns young Jamie to his mother, Aileen Leslie—and finds the woman’s coddling of the child maddening. What Conall does not realize is that Aileen hides a frightening secret: her devoted protection of Jamie is all that shelters them from discovery by a dangerous man from their past. Drawn together by circumstance, Conall soon develops a fatherly relationship with Jamie—as well as romantic feelings for Aileen. But even as the couple accepts their growing affection for one another, time runs out for Aileen and her son: after years of hiding, they have been found. Conall lost his family once—he will do all in his power not to let history repeat itself . . ..

Jennifer Moore never disappoints. She’s one of my go-to authors. I order all her new books no matter what. This one was wonderful. I loved the setting, the characters, and the story.

Five full stars. This story was perfect. A Scottish small town, families trying to survive and reconnect after wars and displacement, a mother’s love for an adopted son, keeping a secret to protect loved ones, and the entrance into Leslie’s precarious life of a returning soldier who inspires hero worship (and a male role model) in Leslie’s son. Beautifully done. One of my new favorites by Jennifer Moore!

Aileen opened the door and drew back with a gasp. Sergeant Stewart stood at the threshold, one large hand holding Jamie by the arm. The child twisted trying to escape his grip.

“Good evening. Mrs. Leslie, I presume?” His voice was polite in spite of his angry expression. He inclined his head but did not loose his hold. “May I speak to your husband?”

“No, you may not.” Aileen’s hands tightened into fists. “And I’ll thank ye to release my son immediately, or I shall call for the constable.

What is the meaning of this, sir?”

Sergeant Stewart’s eyes widened for an instant, then his expression returned to a scowl. “Madam, perhaps ’tis I who should call the constable.” He glared down at Jamie. “I discovered this lad sneaking aboot my library.”

“Unhand him at once.”

The sergeant released his hold, and Jamie ran toward her. She clasped him in her arms. He appeared unharmed, only frightened.

“Jamie, mo croí. My love, did he hurt ye?”

Jamie shook his head and moved behind Aileen, burying his face against her skirts.

The sight of tears on his freckled cheeks made heat boil up inside her. She turned toward the man in the doorway. “Have ye no decency a’tall? Treatin’ a wee child like a criminal.” She jabbed a finger toward his face. “Yer library? And what would ye accuse him of then? Tievin’yer books?”

“Éist! Listen!” He held up a hand, stopping her rant.

Aileen hadn’t realized that, in her anger, she’d switched to speaking Gaelic until he answered in the same. Just as well. She considered it a far more suitable language for an argument.
