The Crew Goes Coconuts!

A Captain No Beard Story #6

by Carole P. Roman

Genre: Adventure / Children’s Book

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

It’s not always smooth sailing on the Flying Dragon and a storm is brewing aboard ship. All of the juice is gone and no matter where they search, none is to be found. When Matie the goat is blamed for their plight, the crew learns an important message about bullying and casting blame.

This was such a fun new adventure. And I loved the lesson to be learned. We all find it easy to cast blame, especially when it’s many against one. It’s our job to protect the underdog, not bully them. Matie was an easy target, being new to the crew, but soon proves her worth.

As with the previous books, I delighted in seeing the crew again. the illustrations were pure fun, and I was left smiling and feeling lighter at the end.  Perfect for the young pirates in the classroom or at home.

Captain No Beard And The Aurora Borealis

A Captain No Beard Story #7

by Carole P. Roman

Genre: Adventure / Children’s Book

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

Has Captain No Beard gone to the dark side? The crew learns he’s using the North Star to track a coarse to the Arctic, where he plans to steal the Aurora Borealis. But the gang need not fear as the captain listens to reason, admitting it’s wrong to steal no matter what. Besides, you can’t steal the northern lights, silly pirate.

I enjoyed learning about navigation by stars. And I’ve only caught a glimpse of the northern lights before and imagine it’s quite a spectacle to behold. The illustrations in the book are spectacular. Bold and bright. Your kids will be astounded by them and have so many questions. All easily answered by reading the story.

Another charming learning experience with the Flying Dragon gang.

Description

Captain No Beard and his crew of loyal pirates heave anchor for another adventure, this time in the icy waters of the Arctic. Captain No Beard’s steering a course due north, sailing by the light of the North Star. Everyone on the crew wonders what the captain’s up to, especially as he gets embarrassed when they ask. When the captain finally admits his plan, the crew discovers he plans to steal the aurora borealis, the beautiful northern lights that brighten the arctic sky. They’re all shocked. They may be pirates, but even they know stealing is bad. Besides, how can anyone steal the lights from the sky? A charming, engaging tale about doing what’s right, Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis is the latest installment in Carole P. Roman’s award-winning pirate series. The first book, Captain No Beard-an Imaginary Tale of a Pirate’s Life, received the Kirkus Reviews Best of 2012 award and the Star of Remarkable Achievement. The series presents real-life problems in an imaginary setting and encourages discussion with both parents and educators.

Fribbet The Frog And The Tadpoles

A Captain No Beard Story #8

by Carole P. Roman

Genre: Adventure / Children’s Book

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

It’s a rocky boat for the crew of the Flying Dragon and hard work for Captain No Beard. Cayla is getting bigger and that means getting into more trouble, And Fribbet the frog is crying puddle of green.

The captain has his hands full with Cayla and the crew are wringing theirs over Fribbet. But No Beard and Fribbet come to realize that families will grow and that’s a good thing as they’ll never be alone.

You’re children will be delighted to learn about Fribbet and how tadpoles become glorious green frogs. I loved the subtle narrative about new siblings in a household and how frightening that might be for kids.

Carole once again shows that learning and fun can be one and the same.

Strangers On The High Seas

A Captain No Beard Story #4

by Carole P. Roman

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Adventure / Children’s Book

 My Review

It’s a beautiful day on the high seas and the crew of the Flying Dragon are getting to know the newest member of the gang. Cayla, the cabin girl, is a bit young and they all take turns making sure she doesn’t get inot trouble. But trouble finds them.

A ship flying the Jolly Roger is heading their way. Oh no, it’s the Shark Bait pirate ship.  They say the captain is so mean he bites his own tail. What will they do?

Oh boy, I got a case of the giggles reading this one. And I laughed out loud at how new crew member, Cayla inadvertently saved the day.

Each new book I read in this series just endears the characters to me more and I’m anxious to see who joins this zany pirate gang next.

Your kids will get the giggles too, and ooh and aah over the fun, colorful illustrations. Sure to be a big hit.

The Treasure Of Snake Island

A Captain No Beard Story #5

by Carole P. Roman

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Adventure / Children’s Book

 My Review

The seas are calm and it’s a beautiful red sky morning on the Flying Dragon.. But Polly says to take heed. A storm is brewing. The crew doesn’t believe her so she explains what she read in a book.

Red sky in morning, sailor take warning. Red sky at night, a sailor’s delight. I learned some hand rhymes like this when I was young. There’s also one for poisonous coral snakes. Red on black, friend of Jack. Red on yellow, kill a fellow. Another snake is very similar to it and it helps you know which one is poisonous.

I love how the sailor’s poem prepared the crew for a storm they couldn’t even see yet. And all because Polly the parrot loves books.

They weather the storm and follow a treasure map to a small island to hunt for bounty. It’s what pirates do, don’t you know?

Oh, it was crazy cute what was in the treasure chest they dug up. Carole sure knows how to spin a charming, funny story.

Kids will want to go on a treasure hunt too. But they’ve already found it. It’s this wonderful book of adventure and imagination.

It’s In The Bag

Oh Susannah Series

by Carole P. Roman

Illustrated by Mateya Arkova

34957657

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Children’s Early Reader Chapter Book

 My Review

It all starts with unfinished homework, progresses to a rotten banana, and culminates in an invitation to spend the night at a haunted house.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a scary story. It’s a story about a young girl who becomes overwhelmed by all the things she can’t get done.

The quality of the writing is amazing. Carole’s story flows so easily and conveys the anxiety and hopelessness of Susannah’s situation. How she uses the backpack to symbolize the situation is so clever. And it ties in the title with the book too.

I was completely swept away by the story. Adults will be able to connect with Susannah’s story as much as younger readers can. Life gets busy, things get shoved to the side and ignored, until they can’t be ignored anymore. We can all relate to this. And we should all take note of the solution Carole gives Susannah. It makes perfect sense.

A pleasure to read and a fun and satisfying ending. I highly recommend this book.

Things That Go Bump

Oh Susannah Series

by Carole P. Roman

Illustrated by Mateya Arkova

35830942

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Children’s Early Reader Chapter Book

 My Review

Susannah tackled her homework issues in the first book in this delightful series. Now she’s got to face the dreaded sleepover at her friends house. A house that’s supposed to be haunted and gives her the willies. She doesn’t want to disappoint her friend but how can she dare to stay there?

Once again, Carole pens a story that flows easily, with no bumps except for the ones in the night. How Susannah faces her fears by helping another friend face her own is a wonderfully imaginative idea.

I love how easy it is to identify with Susannah’s problem and how rewarding the solution is. This is where Carole’s talent as a writer shines.

Another special story in the series, sure to delight both mature and young readers.

 NUTS 2

Wally’s Talent

  by A.J. Cosmo

35827496

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Children’s Book

Ages: 4 – 11

Grade Level: 1 – 3

My Review

It’s always fun to be back with this ‘nutty’ family of squirrels. And it looks like Wally’s in quite the pickle again.

After losing a game of nutball, Wally falls into the doldrums thinking he’ll never be good at anything. Chestnut says that everyone is special so no one is special. In an odd way that makes sense.

What will Wally’s talent be? We shall see.

I’m sure you’ve seen how spastic squirrels are. Add in the angst of youth and that’s Wally. He’s impatient and wants answers ASAP. His frustration made me smile. I could hear my mother’s voice telling me it will all work out.  I couldn’t wait to see how this tale ended.

There’s more adorable, colorful illustrations in this second book and a new lesson to be learned. I can just imagine how excited young ones will be, thinking, I get what he means. I bet you’ll get it too.

What makes me love this series so much is it fits that saying, “Learning can be fun!” It sure is.

Just in case you want to read my review of NUTS, the first book, I’m sharing it again.

 Nuts

  by A.J. Cosmo

29751321

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Children’s Book

Ages 4– 9

Grade Level: 1 – 3

My Review

Right from the beginning this story felt so familiar. It began with Wally the squirrel and his sister and parents driving to his grandmother’s house for a family reunion. I remember playing the car games. I Spy and counting objects we passed by. And it never failed, someone always asked, “Are we there yet?”  Remember those family road trips?

The more I read, the more fun I had. If it weren’t for the colorful, fun illustrations I would have forgot this was about a family of squirrels. That’s how much I connected with them. And those illustrations. You should see the expressions on the squirrels faces. Too cute.

And the author gets quite creative with their names. There’s Wally and his sister, Pistachio. His mother, Brazil and father, Almond, Grandma Praline and Uncle Peanut. A few more relatives are introduced. Can you guess what their names might be? Every time I read their names I grinned. It’ll be fun for your kids to see how many “nuts” they recognize.

Wally thinks it’s all about the presents. Everyone exchanges names and brings a gift. He’s impatient to eat so they can start opening them. But family reunions are much more than that. Something Wally will soon learn.

I’ve read many of A.J.’s books and Nuts is one of my favorites. He includes special messages in such clever ways. If my son ever gets around to giving me grandkids, you can bet I’ll share this with them. I can almost hear the snickers and exclamations of excitement when they see the pictures and read about Wally and his family.

My Fingerpaint Masterpiece

by Sherrill S. Cannon

Illustrations by Kalpart

Age Range: 6 – 8  years

Genre: Children’s Picture Book / Art / Rhyming

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

This is such a delightful book.

A young girl does a fingerpainting and doesn’t get it done. On the way home from school, the wind tears it from her hands and it ends up mixed in with some other paintings at am art dealer’s store.  She’s quite surprised when she sees her painting on display at the mall. People gather around it, each with a different idea of what it portrays.

I have some watercolor pictures that my son did as a little guy. They hang on the wall in my living room and many people see something different. There are even a couple where I see some different each time I look at them.

When the girl tries to explain to people that it’s not a real painting, just somethings he did in art class at school, they don’t believe her. No one wanted to look silly.

The book is told from the child’s perspective and it’s never explained whether it’s a boy or a girl. I guessed a girl and wrote my review as such. I like this clever idea. Boys and girls will connect with the character in their own way.

A cute little story with a sweet, funny ending. The illustrations are colorful and fun. And I bet your little ones will want to dip their fingers in paint and create their own masterpiece after reading this book.

Synopsis

Synopsis:
Have you ever seen a “work of art” worth millions, which looks like something your child just brought home from school?

The dual perspective of “Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder” and just a little bit of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” is evident in this clever artwork story of a child who paints a fingerpaint print in class and then loses it in the wind on the way home.

Illustrated from the point of view of a child, whose identity is left to the imagination of the reader since all of the illustrations are what the child sees, the fingerpaint print is interpreted by official “judges” as well as by bystanders. Should people be influenced by what others see, or use their own self-esteem to make their own judgments?

This is the sixth rhyming children’s book by this award-winning author, whose other bestselling books include Manner-Man, Gimme-Jimmy, The Magic Word, Peter and the Whimper-Whineys, and Santa’s Birthday Gift.

Genre: Children’s Picture Book / Rhyming

My Review

I bet most households have a copy of this book. My mother read it to me when I was very young. The pictures are so vivid and the rhyming is such fun.

I don’t have my original copy but I do have two that I picked up when I came across them in book stores. And I still smile as I look at the pictures and read the rhymes aloud.

Such a lovely bedtime story. A classic that never gets old and all ages will enjoy.

Synopsis

In a great green room, tucked away in bed, is a little bunny. “Goodnight room, goodnight moon.” And to all the familiar things in the softly lit room — to the picture of the three little bears sitting on chairs, to the clocks and his socks, to the mittens and the kittens, to everything one by one — the little bunny says goodnight.

In this classic of children’s literature, beloved by generations of readers and listeners, the quiet poetry of the words and the gentle, lulling illustrations combine to make a perfect book for the end of the day.

Age Level: 9 and up | Grade Level: 3 and up

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I love stories about the Yeti. This sounds fun and I couldn’t resist the cute cover.

Chance can’t wait to show his friend, Nick, the snow fort he built. And Nick can’t wait to see it. After showing off the fort, Chance helps Nick build his own fort and shows him a nifty trick that will keep the forts from melting. As kids we used this trick and it worked great.

Next up, snowball fight! After epic battles, the boys grow cold and it’s time to go home. But Chance makes one quick trip to check on his fort, thinking of ways he might improve it. He’s shocked when he finds the fort demolished, and whoever destroyed it left huge footprints for him to follow.

Not knowing what left the tracks but having a sneaking suspicion, Chance sets off to find the culprit and the tracks lead him to a dark cave. He enters cautiously and discovers something astonishing.

This story brings back so many happy memories from  my childhood. Growing up in the north, we had long winters and lots of time on our hands. The neighborhood got together and built forts, has snowball, fights, went sledding and skating, and trekking in the woods. It’s so silent in the winter. And kind of scary. I’m sure we wondered what might be lurking in them woods.

Chance is a brave, but impulsive boy. I don’t know if I’d have ventured into that cave by myself. Making friends with a yeti sounded fun, but Freddy the yeti wasn’t meant to live with people. They wouldn’t understand him. Would be afraid of him.

It was sweet and sad, the way this ended. But the author showed that, while making a decision may be painful, its sometimes the best thing for everyone.

A poor little owl who couldn’t fly right. No matter how he tried, he flew upside down, backwards, and any way but the way he should. When he flew into a tree, a little girl rescued him, nurtured him, loved him, and encouraged him to try flying again.

It was adorable when the little girl took the owl home and, with a little TLC, gave him confidence to try again. The pictures are cute too. Looks like children drew and colored them. You might want to have drawing paper and crayons handy, as your youngsters might get a hankering to try to draw this cuddly little owl.

With simple illustrations and such a cute little owl, this is sure to delight the young ones. It has a message too. Don’t give up on yourself. If you fail, try and try again.

My Review

What an adorable story. I love turtles and these tiny hatchlings begging Grandpa Joe Joe to tell them a story are too cute.

Joe Joe spins some tall tales for the young turtles. There’s the time he saved his friends from killer seagulls. And the time he took on a Great White Shark. Joe Joe’s sister, Margaret, is fit to be tied by his exaggerations. But the little ones eat it up. Scared and excited at the same time.

Don’t we all feel like we want to be seen as more than we are? This story is a delightful way to show young readers that sometimes being you is enough.

The illustrations are so colorful and the turtles so adorable. I’m sure kids will be as captivated as I was.

My Review

Bo-Bo the bear cub asks his mother why Santa doesn’t visit bears at Christmas. His mom tells him a tale about a little boy and a very disobedient bear. Now Bo-Bo wants to tell Santa that one bad apple shouldn’t ruin Christmas for all of them.

I liked how momma bear guided Bo-Bo when he decided to do something about Santa. Changing the things you can is a big part of life.

There’s lots of bright, fun illustrations throughout and a life lesson cleverly told. A good one to read with your little ones or for them to read to you.

The Adventures of Sherlock Bones turns snooping on its floppy ear when
one day, Dr. Jane Catson, a surgeon injured in the Cat Wars has an afternoon
nap interrupted by a most unusual occurrence.

On the front lawn of her home, rather loud footsteps disturb her peace as
Sherlock Bones, a Great Dane in a deerstalker claiming to be the greatest
detective in the world arrives.

After a quick critical examination of the intrusive dog whose enormous
body blocks the entire sun from view, Catson has her doubts. But that’s not
all. The monstrously-sized creature makes an even more astonishing claim. He
has come to live with her!

Before Catson can collect her thoughts into an intelligent rebuttal,
Sherlock Bones has made himself quite at home, inventing things like a jetpack
for her Castilian housekeeper-cook, a turtle named Mr. Javier and placing his
gigantic food and water dishes next to hers.

But there’s no time for protest. The great detective and Dr. Catson have
caught themselves their first case: A suspiciously dead human in a nearby
abandoned building. Can Sherlock Bones and Dr. Catson crack the case before the
killer strikes again? Or will their differences get in the way of solving Case
File No. 1? One thing’s for sure, that would be a doggone shame.

After being introduced to Sherlock Bones, the Greatest Detective in the
World, in Case File #1: Dogged to Death, Dr. Jane Catson – surgeon and veteran
of the Cat Wars – is back to share an all-new mystery adventure with readers.
Despite all of Jane’s resistance, Bones is now living with her and her
housekeeper/chef, the turtle with a jetpack, Mr. Javier. This time out, the
mismatched duo’s investigations lead them to a case involving murder, of
course, and – wait for it! – Utah. If there’s one thing readers can be certain
of it’s that in this world, the animals are always smarter than the humans.
Also, did we mention…Utah?

“You can’t be serious!” I practically shouted, outraged.

If a murder really had been committed, I couldn’t believe he wasn’t going
to do anything about it. I also couldn’t believe that I was arguing with him
about this. I’d never wanted to get involved with him and all his craziness in
the first place.

“Oh, but I am, my dear Catson.”

My dear … Who did this dog think he was?

“And why is that, Bones?” I demanded, determined not to let my right eye
squint.

“Because I am tired of not getting credit.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Here’s how this kind of case always goes: a crime, usually murder,
occurs. The professional, public detectives—the so-called ‘experts’—are called
in. They fail to solve the case. Then I am called in. I solve the case, but
they take all the credit. End of story.”

As he spoke, his eyes shifted sadly from me to the floor to studying his
toenails.

I found myself, for the first time, starting to feel sorry for him. Then:

“Wait,” I said, this time letting my right eye go ahead and twitch.
“You’re not going to investigate, you’re going to let a murderer run
free—because your feelings are hurt? Because you feel you don’t get enough
credit?”

“Well,” he said, now looking slightly embarrassed, “yes, that is exactly
what I plan to do. Or rather, not do.”

“You can’t be serious! If you think you can help, it is your duty to do
so!”

“I suppose … ” His eyes met mine. “Do you want to come with?”

“Come with where?”

He eagerly un-crumpled the crumpled piece of paper.

“There,” he said, pointing to an address.

I thought of my lunch, which was still sitting on the table. I thought
longingly of the cushion in front of the bay window, my nap long overdue. And
then I thought of the adventure of potentially aiding to solve a murder. I must
confess: I was curious. It also occurred to me that perhaps since returning
home from the Cat Wars, my life had been a little dull.

“Fine,” I said, mildly exasperated with myself.

“Great,” he said, all smiles once more. “I’ll go get my hat.”

My Review

This story is so cute. I love unicorns and each page has beautiful, enchanting illustrations of the little unicorn and it’s mother. I loved it and even read it twice.

It’s a charming story about a little unicorn that’s impatient to grow up and get it’s horn. The mother urges her young one to cherish each day and not be in such a hurry.

An adorable, magical picture book to share with your little ones.

My Review

Another sweet story from the Monsters A To Z series.

Dax is a river monster who comes across Lily, a drowning little girl. Against his  parents warnings to avoid humans, he dives in and rescues her. They become unlikely friends and soon it’s Lily’s turn to rescue Dax.

My favorite part of the story is when Dax tries to hide in the river. All you can see is his big round eyes. So cute.

A delightful story for early readers with some cute illustrations and lessons in friendship and knowing when to stand up for yourself.

Synopsis

A little girl nearly drowns in the river but is rescued by a strange monster. Fearful of humans, the monster soon learns that a good friend can be a lifesaver.

The 12th book in the Monsters A to Z series tells a story of friendship in unexpected places, conquering your fears, and standing up for yourself. This short read is easy to understand for most second graders and a great story to discuss friendship with your child.

1,800 words, 7 gorgeous full-color illustrations, comparable with all Kindle models.
