DREWSILLA THE SHELTER PUPPY by Karen Carew Oakes, Children’s Picture Book, 22 pp., $16.64 (paperback) $3.03 (Kindle)

Title: DREWSILLA THE SHELTER PUPPY
Author: Karen Carew Oakes

Genre: Children’s Picture Book
 My Review
.
This was an adorable story about Drewsilla, one of an orphaned litter of puppies who is too shy and gets overlooked for adoption. She reminded me of being the last one to be picked for team sports and I felt so sad for her. But, as it would happen, she is the one that must choose. Get over her shyness and find that perfect forever family.
Such a warm, sweet story and the illustrations are bold and fun. I recently read an interview with the author and the fact that this is a true story and the illustrations are created from real photos makes this story even more endearing. I had such fun reading about Drewsilla and it will become a family favorite for those who invite her story into their homes.

When Drewsilla and her siblings are tiny puppies, an accident steals
their mother away. A kind stranger rescues them and takes them to a
shelter, where the staff works around the clock to care for the pack of
newborns. Soon, her brothers and sisters begin to thrive. Drewsilla has a
beautiful black coat, intelligent eyes, and ears that stand straight
up.

Drewsilla, though, is scared. She seems afraid of everyone and
everything and hides in the back of her cage when families come to
visit. As her friendly siblings each get adopted, lonely Drewsilla
remains. The staff even worries that she might never find a home. Then,
one day, something amazing happens.

The Johnsons come to the shelter to look at another dog and see
Drewsilla, who miraculously finds the courage to stop hiding and say
hello. All shelter dogs deserve the chance to find a loving family, and
this is the true story of Drewsilla — how she overcomes her fears, finds
her family, and gets a second chance at a happy life.

Then one day, the Johnsons came to the shelter. They had
looked on the shelter website for available dogs they wanted to see.  Drewsilla, was not one of them. It just so
happened that they would have to pass directly in front of Drewsilla’s cage. As
they passed something amazing happened. Drewsilla came to the front, stood on
her hind legs, poked her nose out of the bars, and begged for attention. Mrs.
Johnson bent over to see her. It was love at first sight. The Johnsons asked to
open the cage so they could see her.

Can A Princess Be A Firefighter?

by Carole P. Roman

Genre: Children’s Book

Age Level: 5 – 6

 My Review

Do you remember what you wanted to be when you were young? Was it a firefighter, an astronaut, or perhaps you wanted to join the circus? When asked if a princess could be a firefighter, a father encourages two young girls to dream big, tells them they can be whatever they want to be, and that they can always change their minds.

The delightful and fun illustrations show a multitude of choices.

20180522_172132

I imagine your young ones will pour over each page, examining everything the pictures have to offer.  Dreaming big and possibly wanting to play dress up.

The message is simple and told with lyrical prose. I read it once, and then again. I suspect many children will too, and this may join the family favorites.

My Review

This makes me wish my son was little again so we could have read this together.

A dog dreams of being a squirrel and racing along the Squirrel Superhighway with his bushy tailed friends. But dogs can’t climb trees and squirrels don’t speak dog.

The next time your dog jumps at a tree and barks and barks at the squirrels, you’ll be wondering what he’s saying.

It’s a fun story about being happy with who you are and what you have.  And there are some lovely illustrations to make you and your young ones smile.

My Review

What a fun, delightful story.

I thought it would be a scary story about the boogeyman that hides uner a child’s bed, crawling out in the dark to terrorize him.

Instead it’s about a little boy and the delightful bumbies, boblins, bunshees, and other creatures that keep him up past his bedtime.

The colorful illustrations will make you and your children smile and giggle.

This would be a wonderful story to share with your children. especially those that fear the dark and what’s under their bed or in their closet.

The author includes some fun pictures on how to create shadow puppets at the end of the book. I tried them several times.

I confess, I still get creeped out when my foot hangs over the side of the bed. Still imagine what might reach up and grab it. LOL

Synopsis

There’s a Bumbie Under My Bed tells the story of a boy who can’t go to sleep because of all the monster bunnies keeping him up at night. Told in the first-person narrative, the little boy delays bedtime, using his flashlight and hand to create scary and silly bunny shadow puppets on the wall. According to the boy, friendly, spooky characters like the Bumbie (bunny zombie), Were-bunny (werewolf bunny), Bunny-stein (bunny Frankenstein), and Count Hop-ula come to visit him in the night. At the end of the book, his mother comforts him to sleep by telling him to let his imagination rest — and put the flashlight away.

Enjoy the excerpt

I can’t go to sleep. There’s a Bumbie under my bed. He only comes out at night, after Mom turns out the light.

He nibbles on my toes and he tickles my nose. He hops back and forth, side to side, up and down across my bed to keep me up way past my bedtime.

What is a Bumbie? Mom wants to know when she brings me a cup of water before bed.

It’s a bunny rabbit zombie that moans and groans, laughs and plays, and hops all night because he never goes to sleep!

My Review

A sweet story about a little boy who takes in what he thinks is a stray kitten, but proves to be a lion cub.

As the cub grows, his friends and family react differently than he had hoped.

This wonderful little story is filled with beautiful, fun illustrations, and it has an important message. If you love something or someone, it’s hard, but sometimes you have to let them go for them to be safe and happy.

You are your little ones will have a delightful time as you share this story.

Synopsis

Christopher finds a kitten on his doorstep, which, to his surprise, grows up into a lion! Since Christopher already loves his pet, he tries to introduce him to his everyday life, much to the horror of his friends, family, and neighbors.

Lions Can’t Eat Spaghetti is a lighthearted children’s book for ages 3 to 6 that celebrates the special bond that all children have with animals.

Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Book Excerpt:

Christopher ducked his head and pulled up his jacket. It’s pouring, he thought as he raced toward his house. He ran so fast he almost missed it – a little kitten sat on his doorstep.

“Hey, little kitty,” Christopher said. “Let’s go inside to get warm until we find where you live.” The wet, shivery kitten purred.

Christopher poured his new friend a bowl of milk and gave him some leftover hamburger from the refrigerator. “Sorry, we don’t have kitty food – hope you like hamburger. Now let’s try to find where you belong.”

Christopher thought and thought until a great idea came to him, the perfect idea to help the kitty find his way home. He’d use his crayons and make a sign to put in the neighborhood. The kitty’s owners must miss him by now.

Christopher waited a month before he said, “It looks like no one lost their kitten, so I get to name you. I’ll call you Kip, Kip the kitten. I like it!”

Christopher raced home from school every day to play with his new pet. Every afternoon, little by little, Christopher noticed Kip looked different.
