Some of you may recognize Come Little Children.

I’ve recently featured this book on my blog and I’m thrilled to do so again!

I am almost done reading it and will be back soon to tell ya all about it.

I have D. Melhoff here today to tell us about writing horror.

Then you get a juicy peek inside the book and a great giveaway!

Enjoy!

Now I’m turning this over to the author. Take it away D.

Blood, Guts, and Child Killers: The Darker the Book, the Better the Sales

By D. Melhoff

When you tell people that you’re a writer, their first reaction is a mildly impressed look followed by the inevitable question: “What do you write?”

If your answer is “horror”, then the response is pretty predictable. Either the person will take a step back and reply with a few harmless questions related to the business of writing (“Who’s the publisher?”, “Do you have an agent?”, “How long have you been writing?”), or they’ll take a step forward and start quizzing you on the plot of your last book.

Either way, people are usually interested in writers. They think we’re glamorous, maybe, or different from all of the humdrum accountants or teachers or nurses they hang around with every day. But it’s the second group of people—the ones who ask questions about our books—who are truly interested. Because if the conversation with the first group ever returns to the topic of horror, they usually seem obligated to apologize and say something like, “Good luck, but horror isn’t really my thing, so I’ll have to pass.”

Which is totally fine. Some genres don’t turn people’s crank.

It’s also fine because, as an author, a narrower demographic means a smaller target market which is often easier (and cheaper) to reach. Think of it this way: would Kitchen Widgets Inc. rather pay $4 million for a Super Bowl ad that reaches 100 million viewers—40% of whom are female, and only .1% of which fall into their key demographic—or $100,000 to air an ad on the Food Network that reaches 5 million people, but interests 75% of the viewer base?

Answer: Unless they like burning cash, they’ll go for the Food Network every time. It’s a targeted channel with a much lower cost of reaching the right people.

The same applies to books. Supernatural thrillers don’t have as much mass appeal as genres like mystery, romance, or historical fiction, but there’s still a strong clique of readers hungry for new twists and scares.

So then the question becomes: “what’s too much?”

Can anything cross the line these days, or repel even the most dedicated horror enthusiasts?

I think it depends on the project.

I have to admit, when I went through my second pass of Come Little Children, there was a certain scene that stuck out as going too far. I remember my eyes getting wider as I read it over and thought, “Oh no, that’s too much. That crosses a line.” The whole scenario just seemed out of character. It was violence for violence-sake, and I had to remind myself that my character wouldn’t have behaved that way in that specific situation, so ultimately I went back and toned it down. Again, the only reason I did that, though, was because it wasn’t true to the character.

In general, I don’t think any topic is too taboo for fiction. We all have different tastes, yes, but at the end of the day the biggest thing that people want is a good story. It’s pretty much impossible to shock readers anymore, so even with Come Little Children, I never felt I had to censor the content because readers would think that fictional child murders went too far.

And listen. I don’t sit down with a daily goal of how many kids I want to kill off. I tell the story that I see in my head, and I try to write the darkest, most exciting situations I can conjure up for likeminded readers. Plus, you can’t please everyone—not even all of your closest friends and relatives. My grandmothers, for example, have made it very clear that they don’t like horror stories, but I just tell them I don’t particularly like their potato salads either, so we agree to disagree and move on.

Honesty’s always the best policy, both in writing and real life. It’ll toughen your skin, but it’ll make you stronger too, so stay honest. Even with grandma.

Excerpt

The old hands worked carefully with the added confidence of having done this hundreds of times. Their maneuvers were quick and precise. Fluid. Surgical.

A scalpel touched a point between the nipples on the cadaver’s chest and drifted north, unzipping the skin exactly seven inches along the sternum. Shadows played out the rest on the concrete walls: the worker selected a heavier device and hovered over the outline of the body, flicking a switch and activating a high, screeching vibration that trailed through the air and disappeared into the silhouette’s chest.

Instantly the hum dropped an octave—ggvvrrrrr, ck-ck, ggvvrrrrr—choking and sputtering as it coughed up particles of bone dust.

Ggvvrrrrr! CK-CK! Ggvvrrrr!

The mist made a macabre Tyndall effect in the lamplight.

Beyond these specks, the worker turned off the electric saw and brought up a wooden box the size of a tea chest, then withdrew something from inside.

Something small.

Something odd.

It was too dark to see what the object was, but the worker handled it nimbly and lowered it into the body’s rib cage.

For today I’ll be telling you about The Man In The Fire

by Brian Harmon

The Man in the Fire

goodreads-badge-add-plus

Fire lives. It breathes, It needs oxygen to continue to consume.

Fire followed Daniel all of his life, taking from him everything he loved, everything he lived for.

Now it’s come for him.

Can he beat it? Can the fire be killed?

Fire is mesmerizing and terrifying.

The flickering flames are warm and welcoming, until you touch them.

The man in the fire is impervious to the burning touch and relentless in his pursuit of Daniel.

How could you fight something like that?

That’s what I kept thinking as I read this story.

The answer is breathtaking, just like the fire. Sucking your breathe out of your body and shocking your senses.

The story starts at the final confrontation and gives you the back story as you read along.

I felt for Daniel and if I was in his shoes, I would probably do what he did.

For such a short story, I did a lot of thinking. That’s a sign of good writing. Taking something implausible and making you believe it, feel it, and contemplate it.

Well done, Brian.

My Review

As she sits at her dying grandfather’s bedside, Amanda is told an incredible tale.  But are these disturbing revelations of his life merely the addled fabrications of a cancer-ridden mind, or is there any truth to his frightening claim that a dark and menacing figure has been roaming the land all these many years.

Adam Light

Besides being the best father and husband I can be, my ultimate goal in life is writing horror fiction that will knock people’s socks off.

I began the journey into writing for the public in the fall of 2011, and I have not looked back since. I admit that I got a late start on it, as I am pushing 40 now, but I believe that an eleventh-hour commencement is preferable to none at all.

I have self-published five short stories to date. The most recent one entitled THE CONTINUANCE AGENCY is the first chapter in a planned series still in progress. This one is a departure for me, and comes as a refreshing turning point in my writing. I look forward to writing longer works, my long term goal being to write full length novels.

I have been humbled and emboldened by all the positive responses to my stories, and thus encouraged to continue my quest. Thanks to all who have read and reviewed my work, giving an unknown author such as myself a chance to unleash my madness upon you.

For today’s post, I’ll be telling you about The Dead of Winter by Lee Enderlin

The Dead of Winter

goodreads-badge-add-plus

For a horror story to be really good, it has to have a bad-ass villain.

This book has one.

Don’t let her small size fool you. She’s no longer human and she’s got a taste for man flesh.

This story starts a long time ago. Back in 1714,  when Indians had never met the white man.

It’s the worst famine any of them can remember. They have to make another hunting trip to replenish their food or they’ll all starve when winter truly sets in.

When the hunters fails to return from a hunting foray, White Moon fears the worst. She fears the white men have killed her tribe.

She’s all alone. The only one left alive after the white men killed the other women and children.

It’s been days and she has no idea when or if anyone is coming for her.

It couldn’t hurt to just have a little. Just one small piece. What else could she do?

So, White Moon strips off a small piece of meat from one of the dead. Just enough to get her through one more day.

The next day, other members of her tribe find her. She’s saved.

But she can’t let them see what she’s done. If they do, she’s doomed.

I’m sure you’ve figured out she’s doomed.

They perform a grotesque ritual and bury her body.

One day, she’ll rise again and take revenge on the white men.

windigo photo: Windigo tumblr_m3xrmse1Ka1rutx6lo1_500.jpg

Present day in Claridge, Connecticut.

It’s been a long winter and spring is no where in sight.

Bodies are being discovered. They’ve all been devoured and posed in the same strange position.

No animal could pose them like this, so who or what is killing them.

As the medical examiner puts it, ” I hesitate to use the word ‘human’ in a bizarre case like this, but you got something out there that ain’t no bear or anything like it. In other words, someone put those people in that position.”

There’s some thing out there in the bone chilling darkness. Something hungry. Hungry for man flesh and hungry for revenge against the white men.

Windigo.

I got a good scare with this book.

That tiny creature lurking just on the periphery of the light, standing hunched over and so still. Just creepy.

In the beginning, you feel for White Moon, but by the end, you’ll fear the Windigo.

The story flashes to the past to give the necessary background. Then it returns to present day, where all hell breaks loose.

A very insidious horror story, with some ‘the sins of the fathers’ in it.

I felt sorry for the town of Emergence. These people had no idea why revenge was upon them. Why this creature demanded its pound of flesh.

I had a scary good time reading The Dead of Winter.

I especially liked the authors take on the Windigo. I haven’t found too many stories with this supernatural being in them, and this one had a curious spin on it.

5 Stars for this chilling tale.

I’ve read Lee’s short story collection

Four Tales for Midnight

 goodreads-badge-add-plus

Four tales of extreme suspense and mystery aimed at getting the heart pumping. Hard. A soldier on D-Day finds an enemy soldier acting very strangely indeed; a jilted husband creates a grisly scavenger hunt; a marriage reconciliation service ABSOLUTELY guarantees positive results—the question is, how? And more!

Turn out the lights and enter a bizarre world, but remember—don’t go in the basement!

Gordon Delanolan goes by the name  of Nolan. He’s one of those rare people. One of the lucky few. He struck gold, winning $50 million in the lottery. After doing right by family, sailing the world, and doing everything his heart desires, he’s bored. And unhappy. He wonders if he’ll every be truly happy.

You know that feeling you get, like something’s about to happen? Well, that’s how Nolan’s feeling.

It starts with the stomach cramps. So bad he’s wondering if somethings ripping him apart from the inside out, sending him to his knees to pray to the porcelain god.

When things seem to be calming down and Nolan is about to drift off into la la land, IT happens.

A voice comes out of nowhere, startling him awake.

“Nolan!” it said.

What the hell? Was he dreaming?

Then he hears it again!

“Nolan, go the bathroom,” it said.

Nope, he’s not dreaming.

At first he tries to ignore the voice. But it proves, with excruciating pain, to be impossibe. IT won’t be ignored.

I just love Adam’s mind. It takes you out there, way out there. I would love to see his stories as episodes on Twilight Zone.

Nolan has a voice coming out of his navel. Yep, his navel and that’s not all! I wish I could see the expression on your face right now. And also when you get to the “out of” part in this story. The voice is only the beginning of what happens to Nolan.

This story is like a dream. One you want to wake up from, but, at the same time, you want to see where it’s going. Know what I mean? It stayed with me for a while, like I just woke up and the feelings lingered.

5 Stars for taking me into the “out of.”

The Dead Beats

goodreads-badge-add-plus for awaken

Tristan and his band are a sensation. Their rock concerts are jam-packed show after show. There’s nothing he loves more than performing before a screaming mass of fans. Well, except for her.

Alex loves Tristan, can’t keep her hands off him. There’s just one problem. He’s a vampire, but that’s not the problem. The problem is he wants to make her one too.  As much as Alex loves Tristan, she doesn’t want to become a vampire.

He loved feeling her beneath him, her warm, beating body that knew his own so well. His next words were muffled into her curls but Alex heard him.

“I don’t have you completely. This world is so dangerous. You know that more than anyone Alex.”

“Shh, please,” she murmured and kissed the top of his head.

Alex doesn’t know how much longer she can put him off. Tristan is losing patience. She knows what she has to do and wishes there were any other way.

I became so wrapped up in this struggle between Alex and Tristan. I wanted her to become a vampire so she’d be with Tristan forever, but I understood her refusal. I don’t think I could wrap my mind around the idea of drinking blood for all eternity.

I wanted Tristan to have Alex by his side forever. But he is young and foolish and pushes her too hard. I don’t trust him not to force her.

The Deadbeats is the first chapter in the lives of Tristan and Alex. They are insatiable and incorrigible. The sexual scenes are hot and steamy, Oh My!  This story is exciting and startling. If you think you know what’s going to happen, think again.

Stick around. I have more to tell.

The Old Vampire (Short Story)

goodreads-badge-add-plus for awaken

Hailey’s dreams aren’t about a knight in shining armor riding up on his white steed to rescue her. Her knight is a vampire, or maybe a demon or ghost. Any of these would do.

She’s longed for the supernatural world her whole life. Is she really destined to a hum-drum existence or is there something more for her.

She dreams and she waits. And she waits. And waits. Will she ever meet her knight?

It’s Halloween night. All of the candy has been handed out and the trick-or-treaters have all gone home. Hailey settles in with some wine and a movie.

There’s a knock on her door. Must be a straggler.

The lantern led me to you.”

What a great story. Melancholic and tragic. Quite scary too. When do you stop dreaming? Why should you? You’ll find the answers to these questions in An Old Vampire.

This one gave me shivers. A true horror story.
