Sawfish

Genre: Horror

Synopsis

Marine biologist Dr. Mason Rayman is experimenting with gigantism in sea creatures when he accidentally creates a monstrously large sawfish. When it grows so big he can no longer keep it in his Miami lab, he is preparing to have it destroyed when he learns he is being terminated from his position. By way of revenge, he dumps the oversized shark relative into the ocean, where it soon roams out of control, slaughtering bathers at nearby trendy South Beach.

Dr. Rayman doesn’t let on that it’s his fish responsible for the killings, but someone knows what he did, and she’s blackmailing him. He plays along for a while but then decides she needs to be eliminated. Breaking into a lab at his former workplace, he deliberately creates more monster sawfish and releases them into the local waters.

Rayman then attempts to get his job back by stepping forward as the expert on how to stop the scourge of gigantic predators now ravaging swimmers and water sports enthusiasts on South Florida beaches. But his blackmailer will not let up, leading to an ultimate confrontation between woman and beast, and finally, woman and man.

I added this book back in February of 2016. I find loads of scary books through other people’s suggestions and two people I go to often for new ones both read this and gave it very different ratings. That made me curious to try Sawfish. Now I’ll finally get to it.

My Review

I’ve been loving this series and the character’s from the very first book. This final showdown was a long time coming and I was excited and a bit sad to read it.

So, I settled in, prepared to read about half the book and then go to sleep. Ha! I read this, no, devoured this, in one sitting. There’s very little let up in action when it begins and the scary parts were very scary. I feared for the lives of many of these character’s. Ellie’s nemesis is frightening and would do anything to tear her down, before then destroying her.

Talk about edge of your seat reading and hair raising scenes. It’s a race across the country and against time and the suspense over what was coming what kept me up til the wee hours, having to know. Wish I could tell you how it ended.

Together with her team, plus help from an eccentric exorcist from Texas, she prepares for the fight of her life, a fight destined since her own childhood.

Ellie’s past and present collide in a final confrontation that will give her a chance to finally be rid of her most dangerous personal demon—if he doesn’t kill Ellie first, along with the people she cares about the most.

I added this book back in June of 2016. I’ve read a bunch of Eric’s books and had so much fun. Can’t believe I overlooked this! I’ll take care of that immediately. This is a short story series like some of his Bigfoot ones. If I enjoy this, I’ll read the rest.

The Wraith
by Bryan W. Alaspa
Genre: Horror, Suspense, Thriller

***FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING THE MAN FROM TAURED COMES A COMPANION
NOVEL EXPLORING NEW DIMENSIONS OF HORROR***
The tiny town of Knorr, PA, is one of those places where the walls
between this reality and others is very thin. It draws people from
all over the world and sometimes things slip through from our world
into others while sometimes things slip from other worlds into our
own. Nightmare things.
During World War II an experiment was done using a steam engine to see if
entering another dimension could create instant transportation of
goods and men from one place to another. It unlocked a nightmare from
another dimension and only agents from the agency IDEA were able to
stop reality from unraveling. The train, known as The Wraith,
disappeared along with the scientist who built it.
Now, in present day, a young man hears the distant sound of a train
whistle. The rundown train station at the end of the wooded path is
somehow regenerating. Plus, people in and around Knorr are acting a
little stranger than normal.
The Wraith is coming back, but it’s not coming alone.
Will Knorr survive?
Will the universe?

Evil Stalks The Night

by Kathryn Meyer Griffith

1957918

Genre:  Horror / Paranormal

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

The title for this book is perfect and so is the cover. Something stalks Sarah and her family. History is repeating itself as evil stirs in the woods and children are once again the victims of it’s wrath. Could the curse be true? And can they stop the evil before it kills again?

Kathryn never fails to keep me totally immersed in her stories. She always gives me genuine characters. And her descriptions of their lives echoes my own childhood memories. Not the scary stuff though.

The evil that stalks these people is terrifying. How the author describes the malevolent entity that can’t be seen raises the hairs on my neck.  The fortitude and bravery of Kathryn’s character’s gave me hope they could vanquish the evil that has stalked their family for generations. But as things go from bad to the worst possible I had my doubts.

The fact that Sarah is a psychic and can see what may have already happened and what might be going to happen doesn’t always help her. She can’t always determine past from present, and even when she can, it doesn’t mean help will arrive in time. This unpredictability really added to the suspense and had me flying though the book.

Kathryn is on my auto read list. And she’s given me another bone chilling read.

About the Author
Kathryn Meyer Griffith

Since childhood I’ve been an artist and worked as a graphic designer in the corporate world and for newspapers for twenty-three years before I quit to write full time. But I’d already begun writing novels at 21, over forty-five years ago now, and have had twenty-six (six romantic horror, four thrillers, three horror novels, two romantic SF horror, one romantic suspense, one romantic time travel, one historical romance and eight murder mysteries) previous novels, two novellas and twelve short stories published from many traditional publishers since 1984. But since 2012 I’ve gone into self-publishing in a big way; and upon getting some of my older books’ full rights back for the first time in 33 years, have self-published all of them along with my newer novels. My four Dinosaur Lake novels and four Spookie Town Mysteries (Scraps of Paper, All Things Slip Away, Ghosts Beneath Us and Witches Among Us) are my best-sellers. Once branded a horror writer, these days I consider myself a storyteller.

I’ve been married to Russell for thirty-nine years; have a son and two grandchildren and I live in a small quaint town in Illinois. We have a quirky cat, Sasha, and the three of us live happily in an old house in the heart of town. Though I’ve been an artist, and a folk/classic rock singer in my youth with my brother Jim, writing has always been my greatest passion, my butterfly stage, and I’ll probably write stories until the day I die…or until my memory goes.

My Hungry Friend

by Daniel Barnett

Genre:  Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I enjoy creepy tales of regret. This guy never should have taken his bad day out on a strange old lady. It brought him many more bad days.

This reminded me a bit of the movie, Drag Me To Hell. If you’ve seen it, you get the idea, and can see why I had a bad feeling about how things would end up for Mike. At first I wasn’t too keen on Mike after what he did to the old woman. But then I learned how sad his life was. Losing a loved one to a mind ravaging disease would make me want to kick the crap out of things too. From then on, I was team Mike.

That one action has such big repercussions as Mike’s world crumbles around him. Is he also losing his mind? Are the monsters real? And what can he do to fix things?

This is my kind of creepy story. Once it gets rolling there’s no stopping it. Strong writing, creepy build up and some intriguing characters. I got what I asked for.

 The Haunting Of Henderson Close

  by Catherine Cavendish

41427867

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror

 My  Review

Hannah lands a job as a tour guide, never expecting there to be any real ghosts. Henderson Close has a dark history from back in the 1800s and many people have claimed to experience strange things, but she thinks it’s all hype for the tourists. It isn’t long before the ghosts reveal themselves to her. She begins to doubt her sanity as the lines between the past and the present become blurred.

This was one of those slow burn stories, heavy in atmosphere. I enjoyed that as the author introduced the characters, built the backstory, and then proceeded to give me the chills. As Hannah began to question her sanity, I questioned it too. And the more I read, the darker the plot became.

The ending wasn’t what I was expecting, in an intriguing but confusing way. Still thinking about it and unsure if I liked it or I didn’t. I actually waited a couple of days and then read the end again and still wasn’t sure about it. But, I’m happy I read the book and would like to read more of this author’s work. And I think this would really work as a movie. The author sure did put me in the story both past and present. Spooky vibes.

Genre: Horror / Thriller

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I love my dinosaurs. Especially the mean and nasty ones. And you get plenty of those in this collection.  And I enjoy anthologies. You come across some authors you have enjoyed before and some new ones to explore.

It’s bloody mayhem from story to story. The dinosaurs rule and any man is a fool to think otherwise. Many characters meet their fate and a lucky few survive.

I found all of these enjoyable. Some were quick, bloody fun. And then were those that I wanted to continue. That I would have loved as full length books so I could connect even more with the characters, get more of the horrible, rampaging beasts and more of the atmosphere that had me so excited.

Something I took away from these stories was the new way the dinosaurs were presented. It’s a modern look at how dinosaurs are perceived now. How they might have really looked. It was long believed that they were cold blooded creatures and looked similar to lizards. You get something much different with most of these and I have a new respect for how terrifying they must have been.

I’m not one to play favorites so I won’t list any here. I will say some new authors have found their way to my must read more from list.
