Today I’m sharing the first book in a series that I let sit on my TBR for far too long.

My Review

I can’t remember which made me grab this book, the catchy title or the awesome cover. Guess it doesn’t matter since I finished the book and had so much fun.

Violet Parker is a single mom with a lot on her plate. She has two young kids to raise, a job with an expiration date if she doesn’t hurry and sell her first house, a nasty coworker bent on getting her fired and a dwindling bank account. She sees a way out of it when she’s offered her first house to sell. Turns out it’s a mess and she has her work cut out for her to get it ready for showing. Along comes a mysterious man who’s looking to buy a house. Something’s not quite right about him but what can you do.

Violet doesn’t plan on inserting herself into the investigation when young girls start disappearing in Deadwood. But, with a young girl of her own, she can’t stay out of it.

I couldn’t help but relate to Violet. I was a single mom and know all about juggling a job and raising a child. You do whatever it takes. She was scatter brained at times. Who wouldn’t be. And no shrinking violet. I loved how she stood up to her nasty coworker. And her signature purple boots. Gotta love those.

There was a bit of a paranormal element to this story that came from a source I wasn’t expecting. And some sexual tension you could cut with a knife.

I had great fun with this one and have already started the next book. I’m excited to see what trouble is stirring next in Deadwood.

From Wild to Mild: A Dog in Two Worlds

Genre:  animals/pets
Publisher:  Pups & Purrs Press
Release date:   August 23, 2019

From Wild to Mild by Sunny Weber

My Review

Kaya is just a pup, too young to be afraid of the creature that approaches her, and the coyote snatches her up, proud of an easy meal to take home to his hungry family. Things don’t go so well when his litter mate refuses to eat her and instead takes her in. That saying, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, also applies to Kaya the pup. She has dogs instincts and can’t seem to find her way in the wild life of her coyote family, no matter how hard she tries. Things become even more complicated when Kaya is returned to the world of humans and has to learn a whole new way of living.

I became so wrapped up in Kaya’s story that I often forgot the character’s involved were animals. I could easily relate to her confusion, fears and determination as she tries to find out where she belongs.

From Wild To Wild was an emotional and uplifting read. As with the first two books, I was teary eyed many times. I also felt proud of Kaya. She wasn’t a quitter and kept trying until she finally found her place. And, as with the other books, I’m happy to be able to recommend this to readers of all ages.

Synopsis

Eight-week-old Australian Shepherd Kaya is kidnapped by a nasty coyote to be food for his mate and puppies. Instead, the loving mother raises Kaya with her own pups. But as hard as she tries, Kaya can’t completely fit in—she can’t kill prey or stay awake for night hunts. Why can’t she make herself a true coyote? Constantly criticized by her coyote father, Kaya finds support in her new mother and siblings. She also figures out how to contribute through teamwork with her brother and sister. Trapped by a dog rescue, Kaya re-enters the human world and learns the differences between how dogs and coyotes live. When freed to roam again, does she return to her forest freedom—or remain with her farm family? Can Kaya forever straddle between the Wild and the Mild?

Hurricane Dog: A Tale of Betrayal, Redemption & Change

by Sunny Weber

Category: Middle-Grade Fiction (Ages 8-12), 221 pages
Genre:  animals/pets
Publisher:  Pups & Purrs Press
Release date:   Aug 8, 2019

Hurricane Dog by Sunny Weber

My Review

I read and loved Sunny Weber’s A Dog At The Gate. It brought out all the feels and plenty of tears, so I prepared myself for Hurricane Dog by keeping a supply of tissues close at hand.

Life is good for Gator, a pitbull mix. Adopted by Gavin and his parent’s, he is sheltered and loved. And soon is joined by a special companion, Magnolia, a rescue from a puppy mill. Life is grand, until a hurricane strikes and the dogs have to be left behind in the evacuation. From here on, I suggest you grab the tissues.

The story takes place over the course of several years and is told from Gator’s point of view. You go through a wide range of emotions. Fear, anger, and a loss of hope. But Gator doesn’t give up. So I didn’t. Even though it sometimes seemed like all hope was lost.

Living on the Gulf coast, I’ve experienced many hurricanes. Some I stayed and suffered through. Talk about terrifying. And some I fled from. I recall Ivan, which came through my home town in 2004, I think it was. At the time, my sister and I had two dogs, two birds, two cats and seven guinea pigs. We took them with us to Atlanta when we were ordered to evacuate. Bless the people at the hotel for allowing animals. I couldn’t imagine leaving them behind. It tore me to pieces when Gator and Magnolia had to be left behind. The owners had no choice. It was government ordered. I watched several shows about animals that were being rescued, nursed back to help, and placed in new homes after the hurricane in Louisiana. This didn’t happen quickly. The emotional trauma must have been huge for those animals.

There was quite the pile of used tissues sitting next to me when I reached the end of this story. I cried tears of loss and tears of joy. What an incredible journey this was. And it gives me so much pleasure to be able to recommend it to story lovers of all ages.

The Dog at the Gate: How a Throwaway Dog Becomes Special

by Sunny Weber

Category: Middle-Grade Fiction (Ages 8-12), 246 pages

Release date:   Oct 6, 2017

The Dog at the Gate by Sunny Weber

My Review

Being a huge dog lover I can count on one hand how many years I’ve not had a canine companion in the last 40 some years. Most of the dogs I brought home were either from shelters or they were abandoned by my home. I took them in, loved them and got back way more than I gave. To read about Max was heart breaking. Taken from his mother, abused and neglected by his adopted owners, I wept for this brave dog and couldn’t stop reading his story, hoping he’d find his happy forever home.

I normally avoid books about abused animals like the plague. Something compelled me to give this series a try. It touched me in so many ways and I’m thrilled to be able to recommend it to readers of all ages.

ice rift review
.

Horror and science fiction are a blend of genres I’m drawn to time and time again. Throw in a frozen environment and a group of people who are cut off from help and have to make their own way and it’s like icing on the cake. And discovering aliens is the sprinkles on top.

I was quickly drawn into the story. Formed a bond with one of the characters right away and soon met some others I liked. There was one that I had my doubts about. He did some stupid, selfish things when things started going wrong. But he eventually kind of won me over.

A group of people arrive in Antarctica to investigate an anomaly discovered by NASA. They find a huge rift in the ice and decide to risk going down to see what’s there. A storm blows in and they’re forced to wait it out under the ice so they decide to do some further exploring. What they find is unbelievable. An alien ship. Knowing that the rift is growing and that the ship will soon be lost, they enter. Nothing can prepare them for what’s inside.

As I mentioned before, I was quickly pulled into the story. And once the group entered the ship it was break neck speed to the finish. There’s something, or some things alive. Not sweet little creatures from outer space. These are big, strong, fast and very, very hungry. As they run from one bad situation to another, they are forced deeper and deeper into the ship. It’s a race against time to find a way out before the ship slips into the sea.

Some seriously edge of your seat encounters happened throughout the book. From scary, to a bit gory, to bewildering. I was completely invested in discovering the fate of these characters.

And the ending was out of this world. I had to read it again. And think about it. And I came to the conclusion that it was nuts, but great too. I had to laugh. Talk about not seeing it coming.

Humans have always looked to the stars for signs of Extraterrestrials.
They have been looking in the wrong place.
They are already here, entombed in a spaceship beneath Antarctic ice for thousands of years.
The ice is melting and they will soon be free.

A huge rift in the ice is discovered in Antarctica that stretches for 18 miles, (29 km) and 820 feet (250 meters) apart at its widest point.
When environmental scientists enter the ice rift to check out an anomaly on NASA’s satellite scans of the area, they discover something far more life threatening than the raging blizzard trapping them in the rift. They are unarmed and unprepared for their ensuing fight for survival.

Note – Though Ice Rift – Salvage, is a continuation of the story from Ice Rift,
it was brought about by readers feedback saying they would like to read a
follow up on the book. Ice Rift can be read as a complete story. There is no
cliffhanger or abrupt ending.

Those Who Came Before Cover

My Review

A weekend camping trip goes horribly wrong for two young couples. Reese Wallace is the lone survivor of the massacre that befell them, which makes him the likely suspect.

Detective Maria Geyeyes is assigned the case and comes to realize she’ll have to set aside her belief in what is real and what is imagined and draw on her Native American heritage to solve it and stay alive.

The story started with the massacre and that quickly pulled me into the story. As the author wove past history with present day, she tightened the grip on my intrigue. And the more I learned about the characters, the more I was invested in their survival.

This is a mystery and a horror story, but also one of what goes around comes around. The past can come back to haunt you.

And the ending. Well, that gave me much to ponder.

Synopsis

People are dying at Strong Lake, and the worst is yet to come.

An idyllic weekend camping trip is cut short when Reese Wallace’s friends are brutally murdered. As the group’s only survivor, Reese is the prime suspect, and his story doesn’t make much sense. A disembodied voice warning him to leave the campground the night before? A strange, blackened tree that gave him an electric shock when he cut it down for firewood?

Detective Greyeyes isn’t having any of it―until she hears the voice herself and finds an arrowhead at the crime scene―an arrowhead she can’t get rid of. Troubling visions of a doomed Native American tribe who once called the campground home, and rumors of cursed land and a mythical beast plague the strangest murder case she’s ever been a part of.

My Review

In the three years since Winnie’s grandfather passed away, business has been declining. Her Granny Smythe supports her plans to expand the business to keep it open and profitable year round. So, she books several tours for the day the bank official is to come and assess her proposal. After a rocky start, he seems to be coming around, but that all changes when her big reveal ends up being a dead body in the apple press. Turns out the dead woman is someone that Granny Smythe has been at odds with, making her the prime suspect. The business isn’t the only thing in jeopardy now.

I’m a huge fan of cozies. They have such fun titles and cover art. Apple Cider Slaying says fall and the cover is a perfect representation to the story. Including those two adorable kitties, which Winnie adopted.

And they usually have homey settings. The town felt like home. We had a crab apple tree where I grew up. There was nothing I liked more than to climb it and settle on these two branches that made a perfect place to sit and read a book. I suffered many an upset tummy from munching the apples before they were ripe. LOL

And the characters could be your family and neighbors. They are so genuine. Winnie was smart and brave. I thought she was awesome in how she handled the banker. Despite being nervous she really stepped up to the plate. Just like she did when her Granny was suspected of the murder. She dug in and sorted things out while also juggling other issues.

And the mystery kept me guessing. I had two suspects in mind for the murder and didn’t know which one it was until right near the end.

While cozy mysteries usually have a murder to solve, I found myself just as wrapped up in the characters everyday lives. Apple Cider Slaying is a great beginning to a wonderful series and I’d happily read more.

ONE ROTTEN APPLE

Blossom Valley, West Virginia, is home to Smythe Orchards, Winnie and her Granny’s beloved twenty-five-acre farm and family business. But any way you slice it, it’s struggling. That’s why they’re trying to drum up business with the “First Annual Christmas at the Orchard,” a good old-fashioned holiday festival with enough delicious draw to satisfy apple-picking locals and cider-loving tourists alike—until the whole endeavor takes a sour turn when the body of Nadine Cooper, Granny’s long-time, grudge-holding nemesis, is found lodged in the apple press. Now, with Granny the number one suspect, Winnie is hard-pressed to prove her innocence before the real killer delivers another murder . .

My Review

I enjoy collections like these. I get the chance to read some authors I’ve enjoyed before and discover some new ones. After finishing these, I’ve found a few new authors to add to my list.

I’m thrilled to be able to say that I enjoyed all of these. That’s saying a lot, as I’m kind of hard to please after reading horror for so many years. And I won’t be sharing my favorites. That would be hard to do. So many of these stayed with me after I read them.

All of these felt complete. And they all made me feel a wide range of emotions. From sad to horrified and anxious to shocked. It was a no-brainer to give the collection my highest recommendation.

Synopsis

Midnight. Some call it the witching hour. Others call it the devil’s hour. Here in the graveyard, midnight is a very special time. It is a time when ghostly spirits are at their strongest, when the veil between our world and theirs is at its thinnest. Legend has it, that while most of the world is asleep, the lack of prayers allow the spirits to communicate under the cover of darkness, among the headstones, their whispers rustling in the leaves of the old oak trees. But if you’re here in the graveyard, you can tell yourself it’s just the wind, that the moonlight is playing tricks on your eyes, that it’s only the swirling mist you see. But when you hear the graveyard gate clang shut, the dead have something to say. Here are their stories…

 Scavenger Hunt

My Review

I’m assuming you read the synopsis. Found it familiar. Was maybe thinking, been there, read that. A mysterious figure somehow kidnaps a groups of strangers. They wake up in a room with no idea where they are or what happened.  Then the man behind the smiley mask tells them they must play a game. They play, or die. They follow the rules, or die. And they have to stay together. Let the scavenger hunt begin.

One of the things that made this plot stand out was the character’s stories. Why they were chosen. You can then decide if you care whether they live or die.

Another thing that stands out is the challenges the character’s face. Collings puts them through the wringer. It’s one race after another to complete ever more difficult tasks.

Scavenger Hunt is another thrilling, race to the finish read from this author. I’ve enjoyed many of his books and this one was crazy fun.

Synopsis

“I already know all your names. As for me… you can call me Mr. Do-Good.”
***
Five strangers have woken up in a white room.

Apparently chosen at random, they have been kidnapped, drugged… and chosen to play the world’s most high-stakes scavenger hunt.

Run by Mr. Do-Good, a madman who hides his identity behind a bloodstained smily-face mask, the contestants are given a series of deadly tasks to complete.

All they have to do to survive is…

… complete every task…
… on time..
… and not break any of Do-Good’s rules.

Breaking the rules is forbidden, and failure is not an option. Because Do-Good has plans for these strangers, and refusing to play the game carries the most deadly of consequences…

 The Fearing: Fire And Rain

The Fearing #1

My Review

End of the world stories are a favorite of mine, Throw in something supernatural and I’m even happier.

I’m also attracted to character driven stories and the author has a special talent here. His characters came to life in just a few words. I could easily “see” them.

As the end begins for three different groups of people I was struck by how the events made me think someone had taken the Earth and shook it like one of those snow globes. Each event was different and catastrophic.

And with all good horror, there needs to be a bad guy. I’m not sure what his plan is, but if this beginning is anything to go by, it’s going to be very bad. He reeks of some seriously bad vibes.

Fire And Rain is the first book in Taff”s The Fearing serial and I was quickly hooked. I already have the next two books and I anticipate it getting crazier and more out of this world the further in I go.
