Time of Death

.
While visiting near Charleston, South Carolina, an artist draws scenes of murder she can’t explain. Alex. The artist. After a tree falls on her house, she joins her aunt on an unspoiled island, but something wakens her family psychic streak. She draws eerily accurate scenes of violence, but she knows nothing about them.
Connor. The prosecutor. He’s building a case against a drug lord one piece of evidence at a time. For him it’s personal, and he can’t risk a relationship with a witness, especially a psychic who’ll blow his case out of the water.
Rollins. The killer. He’s a cog in a much bigger wheel, and the witness to his acts of violence threatens his operation and his life. He’ll do anything to see that doesn’t happen.

.

Ooh, there are some really great characters in Time of Death. I think my favorite is Alex, no, Jax, no, Jelly. Oh, I love them all! Can’t wait for you to meet them. Go here to read my review and enter the giveaway  to win a print copy(US/Canada Only) or an e-book(International). Ends Jan. 20th.

Today I’ll be reviewing Cold Comfort.

Read on to learn about this thrilling book and to enter the giveaway.

Cold Comfort

After being dumped by her faithless fiancé, Claire Spencer has abandoned her dreams of a family of her own tucked neatly inside a picket fence. Instead, she’s plotting her solo course and settling for a quiet life as an independent Williamsburg shop owner. So how does she become a killer’s target?

Sometime security consultant Riley, burned out, disillusioned, and haunted by a young girl he couldn’t save, vows never to work with women again. But when a thug tries to kill the friend of a friend, the woman winds up in his arms, and all Riley’s plans go to hell. Knowing she’s in danger, he can’t walk away.

While dodging speeding cars, ducking bullets, and escaping through murky swamp waters, conventional Claire and freewheeling Riley struggle against their powerful chemistry—if she’s picket fences, he’s barbed wire.

Opposites do attract.

My Thoughts

My thoughts are all over the place. The beginning of this story hits the ground running and never slows down.

In the opening scene, Claire is fighting for her life when an unknown attacker tries to kill her. If not for her neighbor and his son, he may have succeeded. Claire is a petite woman and her attacker was large and determined. He only relented when he heard the neighbors rushing to her aid. His parting words, “I’ll be back, sweetheart.”

She thought she was safe. The car with the mismatched headlights wasn’t behind her. She pulled into her driveway and while climbing out of her car, the attack occurred.

After a ride in an ambulance and three stitches in her scalp, Claire is released from the hospital. She’ll have some sore muscles, a headache and some bruising. She tells the police officer that she’s seen the car following her for the last three days. She’s also had the hairs stand up on the back of her neck like someone was watching her, and she can’t shake the feeling someone’s been inside her home. Nothing is missing but her bedspread has been disturbed and she smelled traces of cigarette smoke. She thought maybe she was imagining things. She’s been through a lot.

Her mother died recently and her ex-fiancee ran off with his secretary two weeks before they were to be married. It’s not like she isn’t stressed.

The officer tells her it sounds like someone is trying to scare her, maybe a stalker. He drives her home and makes sure the house is secure before leaving. Claire hits the sack but sleep is a long time coming.

She arrives late to her Christmas shop, Mistletoe. There’s a police car out front and Mary , her assistant, rushes over to explain. Someone has been in the shop and they left something on Claire’s desk.

Who is doing this? On her desk is a dismembered doll, its little arms and legs scattered across the top and it’s head off to the side. Out of the limbless body protrudes a pencil. This is not the act of a stalker. This is something else entirely.

At Mary’s insistence, she calls Ben Riley for help. He’s what you’d call a problem -solver. At first he refuses to take her case, brushing her off as a hysterical female. Then Mary’s brother, Ray, calls and urges him to reconsider.

“”I’m asking you, Riley.”

So Riley is standing in the dark outside of Mistletoe, waiting for Claire to leave. She locks up and walks to her car, but before she can get there a car comes racing towards her. Riley tackles her out of its path and the car rushes off.

“Okay, lady. I’ll take your case.”

“The reluctant detective, I presume.”

And so it goes. The attacks keep coming, each one more serious.

Who wants her dead and why? Claire hasn’t a clue and it’s Riley’s job to find out.

Riley didn’t expect to like her, and he was damn sure she wouldn’t like him.

He was wrong on both counts. He knew he should have stayed away, but it’s already too late. He’s emotionally involved now, and he’ll protect Claire or die trying.

The mystery builds and builds as does the attraction between Claire and Ben.

I love a romance where the relationship starts out bumpy and the attraction catches the characters by surprise. These two are so different yet so perfect for each other.

The author had me hanging on every word, excited to see what would happen next. I couldn’t read fast enough. Don’t worry, I didn’t miss a thing.

Looking for a story that’ll leave you breathless? Cold Comfort barely gives you time to come up for air.

Five deep breaths for Cold Comfort!

About the author and where to find her.

Ellis Vidler

Ellis Vidler is a writer and editor. She and her guests talk about whatever comes to mind at her blog, http://theunpredictablemuse.blogspot.com Ellis’s new suspense novel, Time of Death, will be released November 18th. Artist Alex Jenrette shares the psychic streak that runs through the McGuire family. Just as it does her cousin Kate (Haunting Refrain), that ability gets her into trouble when she draws a scene she never imagined–murder. The killer she can’t identify wants to eliminate her, but maybe help from unlikely sources will come in time. Cold Comfort, suspense with romantic elements, is set in December during the long nights before the winter solstice.  Claire Spencer owns a Christmas shop in the charming town of Williamsburg, VA. Her quiet life is turned upside down when she becomes a killer’s target. Everything she believed is a lie, but the truth is cold comfort. Her first novel was Haunting Refrain, a romantic mystery set in South Carolina, now out on Kindle. It has a touch of paranormal, and reviewers described the characters as “delightful.” Ellis published The Peeper with Jim Christopher, a retired law enforcement officer. The Peeper is a police procedural/suspense novel set in the South Carolina upstate. Tea in the Afternoon is a collection of three short Southern stories, not her usual suspense stories. Ellis is a member of Sisters in Crime. Her home is in the South Carolina piedmont with her husband, two dogs, and a collection of wildlife that shows up for breakfast.

No. Again, another great post. Thanks for sharing Ellis. Her books are sounding right up my alley.

  2. jannashay says:

Great review. As always, you picked another book that has to go on my TBR list.

  3. Emma says:

I want to go walking in the rain on the cover of Cold Comfort.

  4. ellisv says:

Thank you all for responding. I think one of the reasons I had a hard time with Time of Death is that I couldn’t get over Riley. 🙂 Laura, I really appreciate the review. I’m so glad you enjoyed Cold Comfort.

    • fuonlyknew says:

      Riley!
I loved Cold Comfort! Just keep on writing and I’ll keep on reading. Thanks so much for your wonderful book and for letting me host your giveaway Ellis.

  5. Ellis writes so vividly. I felt the cold water and the frigid air, Clarie’s Christmas store–Mistletoe, Riley’s paintings (yes, you can feel a painting by description if it’s done right) and the fear along with determination of the entire cast of characters.

Ellis is a master at this.

I haven’t yet read TOD, it’s at the top of my list. Can’t wait. And Williamsburg is on my list to visit, I’ve got to see this city. Good writing does that 🙂

    • ellisv says:

Leslie, I’m thrilled that you felt Riley’s paintings. I could see each one of them and hoped I could convey the mood and his mindset. Time of Death is different, although Alex is also an artist. She’s quite a different kind.
      Thanks for stopping by.

  6. Ritesh Kalae says:

Love the idea of a featured author Laura. Looking forward to it. BTW, we just posted on the blog. The first post after 5 months! We’re hoping to get back to blogging.

  7. Jerrie Alexander says:

Awesome review! I’m a huge fan so right up front I admit I’m biased. I do get paranoid from time to time. That chill that rushes up my arms makes me wonder if someone is behind me.

This book is on my TBR list for sure!

  8. Tala says:

Great review. Only feel watched when it’s 3 am and I’m home alone out here in the middle of nowhere.

  9. ellisv says:

Once in a great while I read something that makes me get up and check the locks. Sometimes it’s the news though, not fiction. I really prefer fiction.

    • fuonlyknew says:

News can be much scarier. I’m always afraid of home invasion. Happened once and my son was home alone. He scard them away, guess they thought nobody was home. Thank God they ran. I’m more paranoid now, years later!

      • ellisv says:

Kind of like when the phone rings several times and no one speaks, but you know someone’s there. You wonder if they’re checking to see if your house is empty, or who’s home.

  10. Wendy Unsworth - Author of The Palaver Tree says:

I first read your review on GR, Laura, and already added Cold Comfort to my TBR! Woods and forests (though I absolutely love them) always give me that feeling that something/someone may be lurking!!

  11. Very cool! Sounds like a great book. I have had a feeling that I’ve been watched before and then I see my cat staring at me from on top of my TV. Crazy lil kitty! hehe

  12. ellisv says:

I’ve been thinking about that feeling of being watched, those moments when you hunch your shoulders and your skin crawls. You turn quickly but can’t catch the watcher. Eerie feeling. I’m using it in my WIP. Thank you, good people. You’ve given me ideas. 🙂

  15. I have in the past felt someone watching me. I had a ex-boyfriend that stalked me for about 4 months. This was very scary because everytime I turned around he was there. I used to have my roommates boyfriend take me out to my car and then when I got off he would meet me outside. I would have to have my dad come up to my work sometimes because he would not leave. It finally stopped after I threatened to call his work and the police. This was back in the early 90’s when stalking was really not reported that much. I also was 22 years old at the time also. I am now 40 and much smarter and have been with my significant other for 17 years.
This book sounds great and would love to read. I love suspense and trying to figure out who-done-it.
    Thanks for the giveaway.

    • ellisv says:

Chris, I’m sorry you had such a bad experience. It would be truly frightening, never knowing how far your stalker would go or what would happen next. I hope you never have to go through it again. Congratulations on 17 years with a good person! I’m cheering for you. 🙂

    • fuonlyknew says:

I had a similar experience. It was truly scary as I realized I didn’t know this man anymore. He seemed like a stranger.

Ragan, I’m not psychic, but my grandmother and some members of that family line are telepathic (I think that’s the word). I hope the eyes you feel are friendly ones and your gift is welcome.

      • I hardly ever feel any malevolence in the spirits around me. I have, trust me, in the past, but for the most part it is either loved ones, or curious ones, who watch me. It’s only when they decide to show themselves to me, do I make contact and communicate. 🙂

        Regan

    • fuonlyknew says:

Thank you Regan. You will love Ellis’s novels. Her characters become your friends or your enemies and you miss them when your done reading.
I was commenting to you on another post and am happy that your gift is a rewarding one.

      • Ellis Vidler says:

I’m so glad the spirits around you are nice ones. I can only imagine the feelings of malevolence my characters experience, and I’m happy to keep it that way. 🙂

  19. Mark says:

No uh-uh, I never feel like I’m being secretly watched.

  20. Kari Hakkers says:

Cold comfort sounds great, I felt like I was being watched before and it is creepy to say the least! My TBR shelf doesn’t like your blog because you always make me add to it!!! 🙂

  21. Dreams*Link says:

I feel that all the time when I come from university by train, because I am commuting. All kinds of people use the train, so at night I am scared sometimes. I also live in a small neighborhood, but in the same time with strange and bad people. I can’t wait to move from my parents’ house and live somewhere else.

PS. Love you reviews! They are so excited and give me the information that I need to actually buy the book. Thank you for the giveaway!
    Best,
    Diana.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I hope you find a happy place:)
It’s always nice to know my review did what I intended, which is to give you what you need to decide. I get so excited when I read a great book, my fingers race to type out my thoughts. I also like to have fun with it and add pics and excerpts.

  22. Lori Hayes says:

To answer the question have i ever felt like I’m being watched…yes a few times in my house i will get the errie feeling and goose bumps but no one is there..not that i can see anyways. • Ellis Vidler says:

I’ve been in old houses that have lingering spirits, but they’ve been pleasant ones. Only one I know of had strange happenings, but they weren’t bad things. I think the spirit was a poltergeist.

      • Lori Hayes says:

If i had a poltergeist i would move. No getting rid of them or very hard. Their evil. Spirits i can handle.

      • Lori,

Actually, if you don’t mind me interjecting, I am a paranormal investigator for well over ten years now. I have seen, communicated, and worked with spirits; as well as families in trouble.

A poltergeist is NOT an ‘evil’ spirit. If you look at the characteristics of a poltergeist, is more like kinetic energy. More often than not, it’s frustration in the household that is manifesting itself in a negative manner.

        Teenager going through puberty.
        Fights, divorce, struggle.
        etc.

They usually haunt a particular person as opposed to a specific location. Think of the movie Fire Starter, she gets mad… she starts fires. Poltergeist literally means “Noisy spirit.” Unfortunately, we live in the day and age of mass hysteria produced by Hollywood, media, etc. But, if you look at history and documented cases, poltergeists are pests, usually brought on by the individual.

    • fuonlyknew says:

Oh, I get that corner of your eye thing. You swear something was just there, just out of sight, but when you turn, there’s nothing. Now if I turned and there was something, I’d either faint or run faster than a speeding bullet.

      • Lori Hayes says:

        Dharmalious,
Thanks, i do no this. I have a nephew who stays here more often then not. I being the one who takes responsiblity when he gets in trouble. He has a addiction problem it seems he gets harrassed the most as git is drawn to his negative energy. I’ve done alot of reading , gone to many mediums. Silva Brown was the one who actually seen who was in my house. Not my 1st choice of mediums by the way. She chose me. Its seems my house is haunted by a mother and son. The mother being more agressive the son a prankster. Also,ig e t alot of traffic being built on old battle grounds. Kinda cool to see. Soliders, indians on occassion. But thank you for the info. I love any knowledge one the subject , i welcome it anytime.
And yeah Laura that corner of your eye thing usually is a spirit. ..its scary at 1st then it becomes normal when it happens contantly.
