  1. Okay, I love to answer this question because it is so critical.

If I read the book before the movie, I have a picture of what the characters look like in my head. I also miss the information that was too trivial to pass into a movie. I heard one minute of a movie is like a million dollars. So, I understand totally the reasons why all the information you can get in the book is not in the movie. Knowing this, I’m ready to see the movie with those things in mind.

However, if there is a really drastic difference in the movie, I am bothered and incredibly disappointed.

Recently, I read a series of books which are my absolute favorite reads, when it came out on the big screen, I was SO disappointed, that my heart clenched while I was watching it. It made me sort of sick inside that this character was so distorted from what the book described.

So, for this reason, I don’t review movies of books I have read first. I don’t think it is fair. My head has it’s own imagination, and the movie industry doesn’t have any idea of what I am thinking.

Conversely, there is an occasional movie which I think ADDED to the book, like Jaws! One of my favs and the movie was fantastic adding to my vision in my head!

So there are some great movies that don’t always detract from a movie!

    It goes both ways!

    Lots of love, Emily

  2. I absolutely HAVE to read the book before, even if I may get disappointed as the movie is normally not as good as the book. I just can’t help feeling it’s the right way for me 🙂 driftinginspaceandtime@gmail.com Thanks for the giveaway!

  3. George Kulz says:

I always like to read the book before the movie. Why? Books are better! Aside from that, there are many times I find the movies just don’t do the stories justice, so I like to know the author had a great story in mind when the movie goes horribly wrong. Sometimes movies are fine but they’re just missing some details, and it’s nice to be able to fill in the missing pieces if I’ve read the book first. Finally, when the people who made a movie based on a book DO get it right (which I wouldn’t know if I hadn’t read the book first), that’s pure gold right there!

  4. How didI miss it this year? I WANT TO JOIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. miki says:

Thank you a lot for this generous giveaway!
Usually i prefer to read the book first even if it leads me to disappointment when i do see the film after if it doesn’t follow the book.

( now with the numerous films done from books it can happen i see the film first but i try to avoid that)

    isabelle(dot)frisch(at)gmail(dot)com

  6. I like to read the book first. There is so much that is left out of the movie and I like getting the whole story. Thank you for the chance! Hope to win!

  7. karins28 says:

I prefer to read the book first, because sometimes the move lacks vital parts of the story that make you understand it more .. the movie is like an excerpt of the book for me.

    email cookiesmasher5(at)yahoo(dot)com

  8. liskrkmo says:

I prefer to read the book first, but when it’s high fantasy I watch the movie first, because I don’t think a good imagination.

  9. Anita Yancey says:

I like to read the book first. The book is always better than the movie anyway, but I enjoy both. Thanks for having the giveaway.

    ayancey1974(at)gmail(dot)com

  10. tessalsantos says:

Definitely read the book first, though there are times when I accidentally watch the film first instead. Films miss out on a lot of details most of the time. Besides, I’d rather know the plot twists while reading than finding them out on screen.

    Thanks for the giveaway 😀

  11. yahalomi65 says:

I prefer to read first and then try not to be disappointed from the movie (yahalomi65@gmail.com)

  12. Honestly I prefer to read the book before seeing the movie. Movies can be different from the book, so do not ever judge the book by the film. If you see the movie first , the book loses a bit of its charm. If you read the book first and the film is a good adaptation, it will make you love the book more. It’s better to let your imagination flow, to have your own movie in your head.

  13. Danie says:

I always like to read the book before I see the movie. I like to imagine things my way before I see it in a movie.

  14. pato389 says:

Read first, of course. Watching spoils all the fun!

  15. Emalie says:

It doesn’t really matter to me. Sometimes I see the movie first and it makes me want to read the books and the other way around. But if I had to choose one way I would go with: first the book, then the movie.
    Thanks for the giveaway 😀

  16. Auggie J. says:

I prefer to read the book first, but if it’s a movie I know I’m really going to love then I might sneak the movie in and read the book after (but very rarely). Also, if it’s a book I know I’ll probably not pick up for myself, I’ll go ahead and see the movie.

  17. I ALWAYS have to read the book first unless it’s an adult movie. I don’t read adult books. my email is beadnread@gmail.com Thank you for the giveaway!

  20. kara says:

Movie first. A movie can’t fit in everything and I’d like to go read the book after. . . it would feel like more uncover secrets or extra bloopers. When I read the novel first (especially series) first I judge.

  21. fredamans says:

I’m pretty adamant about reading the book and then watching what was made. However, there has been occasion when I did not know it was a book until after seeing what was made, and had to read it later.

  25. I usually read the book first but I actually think I enjoy the movie more if I don’t. If I read the book first then I just see how much they leave out. If I haven’t read the book then I can appreciate the movie more for what it is. Thanks for the giveaway

  26. ejstevensauthor says:

Great question! I usually prefer to read the book(s) first, though I sometimes make an exception if the movie or TV show looks truly amazing.

  27. Christina B. says:

I usually like to read the book first but it doesn’t always happen. For example, LOTR, The Hobbit, Game Of Thrones….I saw the movies/tv show first. But I read HP, The Hunger Games trilogy, Divergent, City Of Bones, Twilight saga etc before their movies. It just depends on the situation.

  28. bluekaren says:

I much prefer to read the book BEFORE seeing the movie. I try to do this when I know a movie is made of a book and it helps to give me perspective on the story. The only time I have done this backwards is with the first Harry Potter movie/book. I decided after reading the book tat I was missing too much to ever do that again.
Thanks for the chance to win this!

  41. yuko86 says:

I definitely have to read the book first! And then, at 90%, I’ll hate the movie=.= But it’s not my fault, sometimes they make very bad movies! (Percy Jackson and Eragon for example).

  47. I have to read the book before I watch the movie. It gives me more of a sense of what the story is about. They leave so much out of movies, by necessity I know, but I cannot stand it. Plus if I see a movie and don’t like it, I probably will not read the book, and the book is more than likely fabulous, they just screwed the movie up, lol!

  48. If I am interested in the story I always read the book first. If not, I go with the movie and if it still surprises me I read the book too. But books are always so much better.

    Thanks for the chance!

  57. I always like to read the book first because when you do, you will know all the little details that didn’t make the final cut of the movie and you wish it did because it was THAT important.
Like my experience with “The Fault in our Stars” by John Green. Some of the important scenes were not included and some parts of the book was changed in the movie. The book is much greater than the movie, to be honest.

And now, I’m currently reading “The Best of Me” by Nicholas Sparks and hoping to finish it before the movie’s release date. So far, the story is soooo good!
I hope the movie will do justice to the book.

Good question! I prefer reading the book before seeing the movie ’cause book always gives you more – richer characters, wonderfully descriptive details, the opportunity to create a world in your mind based on your interpretation of the written..
I’ve been disappointed in a few recent book-to-movie adaptations, just ’cause I’ve loved the books and thought that movie didn’t to them justice. However, I’ve also came to conclusion, that movie is also basically just another person’s interpretation and also movie industry just values some things differently.

Typically I want to read the book first, assuming I know it was a book before it was a movie. I don’t disown people who don’t read the book first, but I think so often that things are lost in translation. Example: one of my best friends watched The Hunger Games, having never read the book. And all she got out of it was that it was about kids killing kids. That saddened me greatly.

Unfortunately that also makes me very critical when I do watch the movie. 🙂

I don’t know why this is so, since I then gripe constantly throughout the movie about how it’s not following the book, or relevant scenes have been deleted, and so on. It would make FAR more sense to see the movie first.

I’m never disappointed when I read a book before the movie. I don’t get attached to books like that. Books and films to different mediums and can’t be identical.

  103. I should watch the movie before reading the book cuz I sometimes get mad when they change some of my favorite parts.lol,… but I usually end up reading books before they are turned into movies. I love to read the book first. If I watch the movie first, there is a very small chance I would ever read the book. A lot of books I still haven’t read, and reading the one in which I already know what would happen is a waste of time.

  106. Kristia says:

I prefer to read the book first. Since the movie is based on the book I would like to know what was so great about it in order to get picked up by a studio. Then I like to see any changes they made while they turned it into a movie. Thank you for the amazing giveaway 🙂

For the most part I have always read the book before the film adaption, there have been some movies based on books like the Notebook, where I haven’t read the book before seeing the movie.
It also depends if its in a genre that I would normally read.

When a book is being turned into a movie and I haven’t read it yet, I prefer to watch the movie first. If I liked it, I’d read the book. If I didn’t, then I’ll be happy to just know the story through the movie. I am so tired of comparing every single event in the movie and the book, but I can’t seem to help it when I have read a book first. So I prefer to watch the movie first and see how I like it. 🙂

  133. Toni Porter says:

It really depends on if the movie is in a genre(s) of books I usually read. If, for example, the book-to-movie is a thriller or a mystery, I prefer to watch the movie first, then compare to the novel. If the story is sci-fi/fantasy, though, I want to read the book first to get acquainted with the world before I see the movie, even if it means I am seriously disappointed in the film adaptation.

  134. Jaed Beck says:

I would ABSOLUTELY read the book first so I could compare them. Its like the way I judge the movie 🙂 thank you for the giveaway 😀

  135. slashbrook says:

Either is fine because the movie is never going to be quite as good as the book even if the author is involved with ever step. Details are going to be missing because not everything is going to be able to make it into the movie. I wish I could read the book before but that isn’t always possible but its nice to go and read what I missed from the movie. Only thing I don’t like is when they change things for different outcomes from the book.

  136. I’m conflicted about this. I have to say that I’d prefere to watch the movie first because if I like that, than I’ll most certainly love the expanded and more detailed version that is the book. Usually when I watch a movie based on a book I’ve read, the whole time I’m like “this is wrong, and so is that…” and I don’t really get to enjoy the movie.
Watching the movie first allows me to enjoy both the movie and the book each in it’s own way.
However when I watch a trailer of a movie based on a book, and that movie hasn’t come out yet, I jump straight to reading the book.
Like I said, I’m conflicted on this topic and each book/movie is unique so I make the desicion as I go.

I always like to try and read the book first, before watching the movie but usually that backfires with me and I tend to be too judgemental on the movie. So, lately, I’ve been watching the movie first for enjoyment and entertainment purposes and then I’ll read the novel. lol.

  149. I prefer to watch the movie first because I am able to separate my view of the events from Hollywood’s view. Reading the book first gets me ranting if I don’t agree with the interpretation of the screen writer.

  150. Arien says:

    Movie first!
I think that’s because of this: When I read the book first, I get so attached to the characters and all the details that I cannot fully enjoy the movie as I have so many details to compare, to notice. Also, if I know the ending of the movie, it’s not as fun.
And watching the movie always makes me want to read the book. I guess that’s because I want more, more. Exactly this happened with The Maze Runner. I’ve seen the movie and I’m dying to read the books now!
