Welcome to my Saturday Screams where I share books that, well, make you scream!

Today’s book is one I can’t wait to share. I’ve read most of Kathryn’s books and they never fail to keep me reading straight through until I reach the last word!

My Review

Kathryn never lets me down. Whenever I open one of her new books, I expect something that won’t allow me to be distracted from the story. Thus is the case with The Last Vampire. I honestly couldn’t pull myself away until I had finished it. And it was unlike any vampire story I had ever read. So many times I was asking myself what just happened.

The story starts after humanity has been brought to the brink of extinction. But they aren’t the only ones who’s existence is threatened. Those that drink blood to survive are also desperate. Vampires no longer hide in the shadows. They boldly hunt down and drain every last drop from the remaining humans. And these vampires are different. They have a secret ability that makes them even more deadly.

I loved Emma. She was a survivor. Not only did she struggle against the elements and starvation, she also had to elude the blood thirsty vampires. Even though the future was bleak, she never gave up hope. I can’t count the times I yelled out loud, cheering her on or dreaded reading what was coming for her.

And those pesky vampires. They were much more than they appeared. I cringed at some of the scenes of carnage. They had a primitive yet rigid living arrangement. I tried to picture what they would look like. I came up with a cross between 30 Fays Of Night and John Carpenter’s Vampires. I dare say I probably wouldn’t have survived an encounter.

This needs to be made into a movie. It wisso visually written and filled with edge of your seat events. Just take a gander at that amazing cover. A perfect depiction of the story. I’d tag The Last Vampire as a horror dystopian.  If this is your thing, grab a copy. Plenty of surprises await and you’ll be entertained from the beginning to the haunting end.

  1. I read Human No Longer and that was a decent read but Dinosaur Lake was just too slow for me with my current reading tastes. Certainly nothing wrong with her actual writing though, just my tastes now! I guess Hunter Shea and others make me crave that faster paced book!

This one is a bit faster paced but I’m not sure if it’s enough for your taste:) Have you tried any of her shorter stories? She has some wicked ones.

thank you for the lovely review on my The Last Vampire! This novel originally was a 1991 Zebra mass market paperback (that’s why it doesn’t have a lot of reviews on Amazon) and has always been one of my best novels (in my humble opinion) along with my A Time of Demons and Angels, an end-of-days saga. I rewrote this horror novel and self-published it in 2015. The amazing cover is by my amazing Canadian cover artist Dawne Dominique. Again thank you! Your friend, Kathryn Meyer Griffith

Hi Kathryn. I loved The Last Vampire! Such great characters and that ending is still haunting me. Perfect one, by the way! Now moving on th the next book you sent. Thanks so much!

  3. Fabulous review. I have to check and see if I have the book. Her email got buried….BUT I WILL FIND IT!

    • fuonlyknew says:

If you don’t find the email, send her one. I’m sure she’ll be happy to pass them along again. You’re gonna want to read this one!

just as an aside…there’s an inside joke I embedded into this novel and NO ONE has ever guessed it. I feel after 26 years I can reveal it. Check out all the names of the bad vampire pack. Stephen, Dean, Anne, etc., and the others. They were the top horror writers in the early 1990’s. Hmmm…no one has ever caught that.

    • fuonlyknew says:

Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Anne Rice….LOL How did I miss that. Now I have to go back and see who else you used. Very clever, Kathryn!

  5. I thought it was clever at the time. Still surprised no one ever caught it.
