The Mansion
by Ezekiel Boone
Genre: Horror / Thriller
My Review
I really enjoyed the Hatching series and when I saw the author had a haunted house tale, I couldn’t wait to see how he spun it.
The house is haunted. In more ways than one. It’s a smart house like no other. But what do you do when the AI goes rogue?
I can’t begin to review this in the way I’d like. It would have too many spoilers. There are so many side stories that come together in the end to reveal the truth about the haunting. The characters have their own agendas and some secrets they’d do most anything to keep from coming to light. And the techie house just plain scares me.
I was hoping to love this. But, I just didn’t get into it the way I did with the author’s spider series. Not so much because there were none, more because I didn’t like any of the character’s. They were shallow and secretive, with few redeeming qualities. Maybe the author wanted them to come across that way, and that’s okay. I don’t always have to like character’s to enjoy a good story. But, in this case, I needed to care about at least one, And, I didn’t. Though, a certain someone did intrigue me.
In all, an entertaining read with a haunting of the modern kind. I may not have loved this, but I never didn’t want to finish it. And I’ll be game to read whatever the author brings on next.

Synopsis
In this white-knuckle thriller from the internationally bestselling author of the “apocalyptic extravaganza” (Publishers Weekly) The Hatching series, a family moves into a home equipped with the world’s most intelligent, cutting-edge, and intuitive computer ever—but a buried secret leads to terrifying and catastrophic consequences.
After two years of living on cheap beer and little else in a bitterly cold tiny cabin outside an abandoned, crumbling mansion, young programmers Shawn Eagle and Billy Stafford have created something that could make them rich: a revolutionary computer they name Eagle Logic.
But the hard work and escalating tension have not been kind to their once solid friendship—Shawn’s girlfriend Emily has left him for Billy, and a third partner has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. While Billy walks away with Emily, Shawn takes Eagle Logic, which he uses to build a multi-billion-dollar company that eventually outshines Apple, Google, and Microsoft combined.
Years later, Billy is a failure, beset by poverty and addiction, and Shawn is the most famous man in the world. Unable to let the past be forgotten, Shawn decides to resurrect his and Billy’s biggest failure: a next-generation computer program named Nellie that can control a house’s every function. He decides to set it up in the abandoned mansion they worked near all those years ago. But something about Nellie isn’t right—and the reconstruction of the mansion is plagued by accidental deaths. Shawn is forced to bring Billy back, despite their longstanding mutual hatred, to discover and destroy the evil that lurks in the source code.

Thanks so much for visiting fuonlyknew!
You can find a list of my reviews HERE.
Shucks, I was hoping this would be as good as the spiders—but I won’t give up on the author!
It might appeal to you more than it did to me though. And I’ll always try his books/
It sounds exactly like the kind of haunting my husband would enjoy. Each person has his or her own creep preferences. I like the regular cover better than the audio because it’s more mansion-like.
Boone can spin a good tale. This one just wasn’t the best fit for me. I hope he does some more scary critters!
Now I’m a tad concerned. When I don’t like any of the characters, I have a hard time getting through a book. And it doesn’t sound like I’ll like any of these!
Maybe you will like some. I din’t care for these but I still wanted to finish reading the book.
Ooooh, you scared me for a minute. I thought this was out now and it’s still sitting my tbreviewed pile. I’m a little worried now because if I can’t behind the characters or at least love to hate them, I get bored.
I just felt like the character’s were all selfish losers. LOL You might love to hate them!
Darn, I’m sorry you didn’t like this better. Scary with AI would be something I might read. Onward, there are more books to be read!! Anne – Books of My Heart
The AI was the intriguing character I wanted to know more about. I think I was just wanting something scarier.
Both covers are great and so is Boone.

He can write some wild stories. I wonder what he’ll write about next.
Did you ever watch that old Disney movie Smart House? Because this sounds like that… but more horrifying! I love it! Lol.
No, I’ve not seen it. Would like to now:)
I really do need to read something by this author soon!
Read his Hatching series. Even if you’re afraid of spiders. LOL
Hmm…like you I really enjoyed The Hatching series, but I usually have to like at least one character to enjoy a story. I’m glad I didn’t get a review copy, but I still would like to read this one. Great review! 🙂
I’m glad I read it even though I didn’t enjoy it as much as his Hatching books. And I will watch for what he writes next. One book that doesn’t quite cut it for me is okay won’t stop me from reading an author:)
This is one that I do want to read. I requested in on NetGalley and was denied so I might grab a library copy. Too bad the characters were not likable. It may not be such a bad thing that I didn’t get a copy of this one after all 🙂
I’m unsure how to recommend it. It wasn’t my cuppa tea but it wasn’t a bad story. Others might like it much more than I did. And I don’t always have to like the characters to like a book. It just didn’t work that way for me this time.
I’ve wanted to read The Hatching. Guess I need to try any book by this author based on your review. Thanks for sharing this one!
The Mansion was a good story. I guess it just wasn’t the right one for me. Now, The Hatching. That’s my cuppa!
Sorry this wasn’t as good as you hoped, I’m still trying to wrap my head around “tech” and “haunted house” in the same story!
It was a good story, just didn’t reach out and grab me.
