Genre: Mystery / Cozy Mystery

My Review

I’ve read many of Kathryn’s books. She writes about ghosts, vampires, witches, time travel and more. Being addicted to cozy mysteries I was curious to see how she would do in this genre.

Abigail’s husband walked out the door, got in his car and vanished. Two years later his body is discovered, a victim of a mugging. After two years of wondering what had happened to her husband, she now has answers and feels a need to move on with her life. A fresh start is in order and Abigail sets off on an adventure, finally coming across a quaint little town with the curious name of Spookie.

Kathryn’s descriptions of the town and inhabitants of Spookie felt like she was describing the small town I live in.  The buildings, the flora and the eccentric character or two could easily be what I see every day.

Feeling a strong connection to the place, Abigail buys a fixer upper and begins her new life. While doing some repairs she begins to find scraps of paper with notes scribbled on them in crayon. Inquiring about the history of her new home, she learns a mother with two small children mysteriously disappeared some 30 years ago and were never heard from again. She’s curious about what happened to them and digs deeper into the town’s history.

Thus begins the mystery. And this is where you get to meet some of the other players in the story. It seems every small town has stereotypes and you get some of them here. I’d say my favorites are the two older sisters, both quite eccentric and both with some secrets to share. And retired Chicago homicide detective, Frank Lester. Kathryn wrote him so well. I could see Frank, calmly contemplating the mystery while also being amused by Abigail. Her naivete and his quiet, confident demeanor would be a good fit and I had hopes they might find some peace and happiness together. Yep, I’m a match maker.

Scraps Of Paper reads at a steady pace. As the crime happened over 30 years ago, there’s no violent scenes.  And while the mystery of who might have committed the crime was apparent fairly early on for me, I was still  tantalized by the story. Kathryn writes so visually that I found even the little things engrossing. And she added this tiny bit of paranormal to the story that had me wondering right along with Abigail. Is her house really haunted?

Did I enjoy this as much as Kathryn’s other books? Yes, I did. I do like her darker books, but I was just as happy with this cozy mystery.

Synopsis

Abigail Sutton’s beloved husband walks out one night, doesn’t return, and two years later is found dead, a victim of a long ago crime. It’s made her sympathetic to the missing and their families.
Starting her new life, Abigail moves to small town and buys a fixer-upper house left empty when old Edna Summers died. Once it was also home to Edna’s younger sister, Emily, and her two children, Jenny and Christopher, who, people believe, drove away one night, thirty years ago, and just never came back.
But in renovating the house Abigail finds scraps of paper hidden behind baseboards and tucked beneath the porch that hint the three could have been victims of foul play.
Then she finds their graves hidden in the woods behind the house and with the help of eccentric townspeople and ex-homicide detective, Frank Lester, she discovers the three were murdered. Then she and Frank try to uncover who killed them and why…but in the process awaken the ire of the murderer.

About the Author
Kathryn Meyer Griffith

Since childhood I’ve been an artist and worked as a graphic designer in the corporate world and for newspapers for twenty-three years before I quit to write full time. But I’d already begun writing novels at 21, over forty-five years ago now, and have had twenty-six (six romantic horror, four thrillers, three horror novels, two romantic SF horror, one romantic suspense, one romantic time travel, one historical romance and eight murder mysteries) previous novels, two novellas and twelve short stories published from many traditional publishers since 1984. But since 2012 I’ve gone into self-publishing in a big way; and upon getting some of my older books’ full rights back for the first time in 33 years, have self-published all of them along with my newer novels. My four Dinosaur Lake novels and four Spookie Town Mysteries (Scraps of Paper, All Things Slip Away, Ghosts Beneath Us and Witches Among Us) are my best-sellers. Once branded a horror writer, these days I consider myself a storyteller.

I’ve been married to Russell for thirty-nine years; have a son and two grandchildren and I live in a small quaint town in Illinois. We have a quirky cat, Sasha, and the three of us live happily in an old house in the heart of town. Though I’ve been an artist, and a folk/classic rock singer in my youth with my brother Jim, writing has always been my greatest passion, my butterfly stage, and I’ll probably write stories until the day I die…or until my memory goes.

  1. Nice review. Sounds like a fun book to read on a chilly January day.

    • fuonlyknew says:

And I did read it on a freezing January day! LOL I got lost in this story and never even noticed the weather at the time:)

  2. I like for there to be several twists and turns leading the protagonist astray, as well as red herrings. I don’t want to be able to “solve” the case until the last few pages. 🙂

  3. Love your great review Laura. She has so many great stories and I can hardly wait to get to the next one. 🙂

  4. Laura, thank you for the lovely detailed review and the tag team…and thanks for showing so many of my covers (all done by my fabulous Canadian cover artist Dawne Dominique). I truly appreciate you and Sherry’s support over the years on my books! Things are going good in my life and so much better than last year when I was battling breast cancer. A year clear so far! (P.S. I just finished Dinosaur V: Survivors and will be publishing it in the next week or so.)

    • fuonlyknew says:

It’s wonderful that your doing so well now, Kathryn. So happy for you! You know I love your stories and I’m so excited to get my hands on the next Dinosaur Lake story!

  5. Hi Laura,

I didn’t think I had a 1 thing thing so much, but I do now prefer something short 120-300 pages ish, and looking at my bookshelves, often written by a woman or with a woman detective of some sort. I also enjoy the romance HR genre (don’t know the exact name per the industry) which are romances with a thriller aspect to them.

Secondarily, I enjoy mysteries which are intelligently written, by which I immediately point to PD James.

    Fun question!

    Cheers and blessings,

    April

  6. Fab review! I do like a cosy mystery and this one sounds really good, I’ll add it to my list. 🙂

  7. Beware Of The Reader says:

OK but is there a link with her husband’s murder? Or is it to come in another novel? Excellent review laura!

    • Hi Beware of the Reader
no…there are now 4 more of these Spookie Town mysteries and I have not solved the mystery yet of Abby’s dead husband, only that he was found dead, a victim they think of a gone wrong mugging. But you have given me an idea…perhaps in book 6, which I will be starting soon, I can have Frank (Abby’s friend and eventually husband in the series) solve it and catch the person who did it. Hmmm, thanks for the prompt.

    • fuonlyknew says:

Thanks, Sophie. This is a separate case but I’d like to learn what really happened to her husband.

  8. StackingMy BookShelves says:

I have read a few of KMG books years ago and thought she was amazing. I will have to check out getting some books by her again. She really was great. Great review and you make me want to read more!

    Mary

    • fuonlyknew says:

She has several that are perma free. You should go check. It would be a great way to get back into her books. I plan to read everything she’s written and will also be waiting for each new one:)

  9. Thank you Stacking My Book Shelves and Laura for your compliments on my books/my writing…I love it when people say such things. Makes all the years (I’ve been writing now for 48 years of my life) and hard work worth it. Grin.

  10. Daniela Ark says:

oh wow look at all the fabulous books Kathryn writes! ’Vampires, ghosts, witches… sounds like I would love them! Especially if it has great descriptions of small town settings! I love small town stereotypes! 🙂 I’m the crazy lady taking pictures of books in the local library courtyard XD

    • fuonlyknew says:

You’d enjoy her books, Daniela. Especially if you love descriptive writing and genuine characters. She can also pen some scary scenes. LOL Go check out her books. Several of them are free.
