I’m also linking up with The Sunday Post hosted by Kimberly @Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Some chit chat.

That winter vortex was brutal for everyone in the US this week. My brother says it’s still only in the single digits where he lives. They actually got down to over 30 below there with wind chills temps even lower! We did get down to freezing temps here but we’re already bouncing back. Warming each day until we hit the 70s again. I know I’m not the only one longing for spring. I forgot to watch the telly! Did the groundhog see his shadow?????

This time of year is when I look to my outdoor greenery. It was time to cut back the Sega so I could get ready to harvest the seeds.

Here’s the first steps I’ve taken

20190126_124146 20190126_124213 20190126_130949 20190126_130936

I trimmed back the leaves to expose the seed ball. I’m going to wait another week or two to harvest them so I left the leaves from the surrounding smaller sega’s to protect it from the cold.

Thought I’d also give you an update on Flora. She’s hanging in there.

20190126_131102

A little worse for wear from the cold. The frost and freezing temps did get to her outer leaves.

And something else for this time of year is oranges. My miniature orange tree is so laden with these tasty fruits that the branches are drooping.

20190126_131125

Don’t they look yummy!

20190126_131131

I thought I’d leave you with these gorgeous photos of a sunset from my back yard.

And the night creeps in.

Have a lovely Sunday.

  1. Greg says:

Oh my gosh what a week up here in the frozen polar zone lol. I’m ready for spring at this juncture. 🙂

Glad that Flora is doing okay. And yes those oranges look yummy!

    Fathomless looks pretty awesome.

    • fuonlyknew says:

I have family in Fenton and Grand Blanc. I know they are miserable. Don’t miss it at all. It has warmed up here and supposed to be around 70 for next several days. I wish spring would hurry up. LOL My oranges tastes so sweet and my plants are hanging in there.

  2. I think they said it was going to be an early spring-not sure how it relates to Phil’s shadow though! I hope you enjoy Fathomless, The Tank and Red Swarm!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I’ll google and see if Phil spotted his shadow:) I’m excited to read the books. You sure enjoyed them and that usually means I will too! And I hunger for some creature featured stories.

  3. We regularly have weather like in Chicago right now, but I imagine for America it was quite something. My sister actually lives in Chicago. We asked her if she feels like she’s back in Lithuania yet 😀 😀 😀

It didn’t snow where you live, did it? I remember you posted photos of an unusual snow like last year or something.

Your oranges look amazing! I’ve never really seen oranges grow on, well, trees. Or anthing, for that matter. Only in supermarkets xD it always completely enchants me. MAGIC! Must be so yummy too when homegrown.

    • fuonlyknew says:

No snow here. Just some frost, which was beautiful. It’s an exciting event f you do get any. They close the schools if they think we are going to get some. I used to think that was funny until I thought about the fact we don’t have snow tires on our vehicles so we’d be slipping and sliding. It’s been so long since I’ve driven in the stuff that I’ve forgotten how. LOL My miniature oranges are so sweet I wash them good and eat them whole:)

  4. Beware Of The Reader says:

Laura your trees and plants remind me so much of our garden when we lived in Portugal! Now I am pleased to know that you are warm (relatively) and safe. And yet did hell freeze over? No telly this week????

    • fuonlyknew says:

I love all of the different greenery here. I have oranges, bananas and persimmons right now. It is 70s and balmy today and supposed to be warm all week. Time to start adding chemicals to the pool and keeping it ready for spring. I did have television, just didn’t watch it. LOL

  5. We are finally warmer than Alaska, this week I am pretty sure Alaska was laughing at us.
Your plants are awesome and that tree! That is one of the reasons I want to live in a warmer climate so I can grow a fruit tree with lemons & oranges

That night sky is gorgeous, those colors are stuffing!

Have a great week, Laura! Happy Reading! xx

    • fuonlyknew says:

The temps were insane for many places this week. I’m so happy I live in a tropical climate. I don’t do cold anymore! I’m wanting to get a lemon tree, a tulip tree and a fig tree to plant this year. Used to have them at my old house and it was nice to at least one of them blooming year round. The sunset was so fast I had to scramble to get these pictures.

  6. Your orange tree looks spectacular and delicious! So does your pile of new books.:-)

  7. Tammy says:

I’d love to know more about harvesting your Sega seeds. What do you do with them? I don’t have one myself but I love them. And wow those oranges! Have a great week, Laura😊

    • fuonlyknew says:

You soak them in a bucket of water for a week or so until the outer shell can easily peel off. Then you plant them to get them started. I use a kiddie pool filled with soil. Once they start getting leaves I move them to pots until they are large enough to plant. I plan to add them all along the one side of my house where I have a few others.

  8. We had one day with a high of zero. That was the worst day. This week we’re supposed to have 50s then back to 20s and 30s. I just wish it would make up its mind. Either cold or not. Have a great week.

Melanie @ Hot Listens & Books of My Heart

    • fuonlyknew says:

Our winters are always like that. Cold and then warm. It got unusually cold last week and glad to see it move on.

  9. I’m a little sad we didn’t even get a hint of snow here. Oh, well. I’m ready for Spring! LOL.

  10. Laura
No, the groundhog did not see his shadow on Feb. 2…SPRING IS COMING EARLY! Yeah. We had a -5 last week here in the middle of Illinois…unheard of. Today it’s 65. Go figure.

    • fuonlyknew says:

No shadow. YES!!!! Nature is keeping us on our toes with the cold and then warm temps. I’m so ready for barefoot weather.

  11. You have miniature oranges and I had 3 days off work due to the extreme cold! Crazy! Have a good week!

  12. The big freeze thing hitting north america was insane!
    Those oranges book awesome.

  13. kozbisa says:

I was ready to throw a parade when I heard Phil predicted an early spring.BRING IT! Your sunset phots are beautiful!

  14. I am also excited about getting to the 70s this week. I love those sunset photos because of the trees in them. I can’t believe someone got more freebies than me! Have a great week.

  15. sjhigbee says:

Oh… and hearing you talk about temperatures back in the 70s lets me know that I am DEFINITELY not living in the right part of the world! It’s freezing again tonight… and we are WEEKS away from any kind of spring. I love the look of those oranges – I’m crossing my fingers that my more tender plants survive the frosts… Have a great week, Laura and thank you for the pics.

  16. Oh yeah! I heard about the winter vortex. Such a scary situation. I love the look of your plants!

    Here’s my Sunday Post!

Ronyell @ Rabbit Ears Book Blog

  17. Yvonne says:

Beautiful photos! After last week’s single digit temps, we are going into the 50’s this week which is unseasonably warm for here. What a jump! Hope you have a great week!

  18. They closed schools here Tuesday because it looked like a sure thing that it was going to snow. No snow which made for some disappointed kids though I was fairly pleased. I’m not a big fan of cold or snow. The sunset pictures are gorgeous and how exciting about the orange tree. We’re just a little bit too far north to grow citrus and it makes me sad. I’d love to have a lemon or an orange tree. Have a great week!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I grew up in the north and I don’t miss those cold temps and dealing with the snow and ice. I did love it as a kid:) Especially those snow days! LOL

  19. StackingMy BookShelves says:

Are the big oranges or like mini ones? How awesome is that. I love it! Yes, over by me they canceled school for a few days because of the -30 below. This week is looking better and today was in the 50s! Have a wonderful week.

    Mary

    • fuonlyknew says:

They are mini oranges. I eat them peel and all, they’re so sweet:) The weather sure bounced back after those insane lows!

  20. Stormi D Johnson says:

I am so ready for SPRING! Groundhog says it will come early and I hope he didn’t lie. 🙂

    • fuonlyknew says:

It’s been quite a while since Phil hasn’t seen his shadow. Got so excited he didn’t and have my fingers crossed for the promise of an early spring!

    • Yeah…as I said before the groundhog didn’t see his shadow….but then last night I heard a statistic that made me doubt that Phil groundhog…he’s only got an accuracy rate of 39%. Really. Darn.

      • fuonlyknew says:

I’m a bit concerned too. The Farmer’s Almanac says a long cold winter. I hope it’s wrong and Phil is right!

  21. After some cold, cold days, it’s great seeing all that greenery in your post!

  22. Wow you haul this week is giving me some serious creature feature feels. I was able to grab some of the same freebies too!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I just got the new Dinosaur Lake book and it put me in the mood for same creatures! And Chuckles really liked them so how could I resist.

  23. Oh i still managed to bag a couple of freebies, thank you!

I do like those books about shark infested waters and Red Swarm looks deliciously evil!

    • fuonlyknew says:

Chuckles has been reviewing some awesome creature books and I’ve been adding them to my wish list. I thought it was time to go ahead and buy a few.

  24. Forgot to mention your oranges lol They look really, mouthwatering juicy!

  25. Carole says:

I know nothing about plants but I would love to be able to grow food! Your oranges look amazing! I cannot wait for spring. Enjoy your new books and have a great week!

  26. S. J. Pajonas (spajonas) says:

Wow. You’re so lucky that you can grow all those oranges! They do look yummy. I’d be eating them every day. 🙂 And I don’t know what a sega plant is nor what you do with the seeds. Hmmm. Glad it’s warming up there!

    • fuonlyknew says:

I pick a handful each day to devour. They stay fresh right on the tree. I like to chill them for about five minutes in the fridge. A Sega is a type of palm tree.

  27. Lola says:

I hope you stayed warm with the cold weather. I like seeing pictures of your plants as we don’t have a garden at the moment, so we have only indoor plants. Your orange tree is looking great. Have a great week!
