My Review
.

Beware. You are now entering the publishing zone!

First things first. I had a bit of a rough patch with Kate and Mac. He’s married, after all. I don’t condone that behavior one bit. But there are special circumstances here. I actually found myself hoping these two would get their happy ever after. This is the first of three books so I was pretty sure it wouldn’t happen soon. And the author throws in Nick. He’s just as sexy as Mac, and single. Who knows where it will go.

What a lovely mess is the world of publishing. As a publicist, Kate has to deal with some crazy stuff. From authors faking 5 star reviews, to stage fright, to squeezing that next book out of them, she’s always stressed out. I bow to her tenacity. No matter how impossible some things seemed, she found a way, often making me laugh at her ingenuity.

I read a lot of  books and have come to know many authors and some of their experiences with being published. Now I have a peek into the other side of that process. I don’t envy either. It can be cut throat and you need a tough skin and lots of patience. And sometimes, a heart.

Many characters are introduced. A few secondary ones really had an impact. And there are some I’d gladly show to the door.

The chapters are short, making it a fast read. I read this straight through in one night. I started it, got sucked in by the smooth writing and genuine characters, and kept thinking I’d read just one more chapter. It was the wee hours when I finished it and I kept looking at the second book, but I resisted and did get some sleep.

I recommend this to authors, publishers, and word lovers everywhere.

“It’s a mad mad mad mad world.”

Synopsis
Behind every book, there’s always more to the story. Can one woman change an age-old institution like publishing? Probably not, but Kate Mitchell sure wants to try. As a publicist with a large, respected New York publishing house, Kate finds herself at the mercy of a broken publishing system, books that don’t always sell (at all) and author egos that are often, well, as big as the island of Manhattan.Enter the star Editor, MacDermott Ellis. Tall, handsome, charismatic, married, and ready to save the day. Kate wants to do the right thing but her hormones seem to be driving her decisions. Then there’s Allan Lavigne, once a revered author, now as forgotten as yesterday’s news; and his nephew Nick, who wants to sweep Kate away from New York for another coast, California.

As Kate tries to navigate the landmine of publicity, the over-the-top author expectations, and the careful dance of “I’m sorry, your book isn’t on the bestseller list this week”, she also finds authors who are painfully overlooked by a publisher wanting more sex, more celebrities, and more scandal.

My Review
.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series so I was anxious to see where Kate and mac were in this next chapter.

The world or a publicist is a crazy as ever. From authors faking 5 Star reviews, to one who wrote a book about how she lost a bunch of weight, except shed didn’t, to an author being arrested for a despicable crime, Kate is in the thick of it.

Then Kate is betrayed by the man she loves and is assaulted by someone and her whole world comes crashing down. No way will she be returning to Morris and Dean.

Now Kate is behind the wheel of a  pink Cadillac convertible, heading towards Los Angeles and a new future and maybe a new romance.

Nick is opening his home to her, as a guest, but I’m sure he wants more. He’s still in love with her and remains hopeful Kate will get over Mac.

Mac betrayed her in the worst possible way. I couldn’t believe it. He always seemed so strong, so sure of himself. I guess he isn’t that strong after all. He chose a cowards way out of a sticky situation and it hurt Kate deeply.

I wanted to give Kate a high five for finally putting the brakes on her relationship with Mac. He is married and shows no signs of leaving his wife. His latest stunt broke her heart but set her on a new path. One I find very exciting.

There are big changes in this second book. Some so exciting I wish I could share. But that would be spoiling it. Gots to leave you with some anticipation.

I’m still having fun with this series and am almost finished reading the third book, Climax. If your looking for a great summer read, these will do nicely. I hope you try them.

Author Christina George

Christina George

Christina George has worked in publishing for twenty years (give or take). Here’s what this book isn’t. It’s not a slam against publishing (though it is broken) and it’s not a slam against authors (though some of them are crazy). This book is not autobiographical though many of the stories are true. No you won’t know which ones, cause it’s more fun to guess, right? George continues to work in publicity and helps authors because at the end of the day she does love books, she loves publishing, and she loves authors. She hopes you’ll enjoy this romp through Kate’s world as much as she enjoyed creating it.

Anzard

My Review

I definitely felt like I might have fell down the rabbit hole or spun over the rainbow while reading Anzard. As Justin, along with his Tribe of Truth and Poofy, follows The Path of Possibilities, so will your children, learning to listen to and develop their own inner voices and instincts.

Justin is a normal ten year old boy about to go on the adventure of a lifetime. When his parent’s plane is lost in a storm, Justin prays for their safety, and his prayers are answered.

The mysterious world of Spiritainia has heard Justin and sent an anzard, Poofy, to help him. An anzard is a mix of angel and wizard and are tiny like a pixie.

Thus begins a magical adventure into a fantastical world filled with amazing creatures and characters. Not all are good though.

There are bad people in Possibility. The evil witch, Nosefeen, along with her wimpy husband and misfit sons, Dud and Crud, set trap after trap, trying to stop Justin and his new friends. They don’t want Justin to find himself. They don’t want Goodness.

As Justin faces each obstacle, he learns from his friends, starts to listen to and trust his own inner voice and make his own decisions. He’s on the right path to self discovery. To finding out who he’s supposed to be. This will help him find his parents and return him home.

Anzard is a treasure. A magical, supernatural adventure with characters you’ll love and loathe.

The Tribe of Truth, which consists of Regal the eagle, Billy the goat,  Chumpah the chipmunk, and Turner  the turtle, are each there for a different purpose. And Poofy is playful yet wise. She’s a bit of a rebel.

Nosefeen reminded me of the wicked witch in The Wizard of Oz, except she wasn’t as clever. Her husband is a bumbling fool and her nasty brats, Crud and Dud, aren’t much help either. Talk about a dysfunctional family.

These are just some of the characters you’ll meet on the Path of Possibilities.

How I wished I still had young ones to read this to. When I reached the end, there was this sweet, magical moment, so poignant. It made me smile, made my heart feel lighter, younger, if only for a while.

Description

Author Christopher Conroy has just released a book for kids aged 8-12 called ANZARD. Teachers, parents, producers…take note! This appealing and well-written book would give Lewis Carroll (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland) reason to worry. As a matter of fact if you mixed in one part Harry Potter, with one part Pinocchio then added a generous helping of Alice in Wonderland…you’d get Anzard!

ANZARD tells the story of how a young boy named Justin Cavell learns to listen to that voice inside him and trust his instincts. He also learns how his dreams and wishes can come true: Justin becomes more aware of himself and his potential to turn his dreams and wishes into reality.

One dark and stormy night, as Justin is anxiously awaiting the return of his parents and praying for their safe return from a long overdue plane trip, he is visited by Poofy, a tiny, magical pixie who comes from the faraway planet, Spiritainia. Justin is escorted to this wonderful world of Spiritainia by the Anzard pixie, Poofy. Aside from Poofy, Justin is joined by his own Tribe of Truth – that include such memorable characters as Regal the Eagle, Turner the Turtle, Chumpah the Chipmunk and Billy the Goat – define Justin’s inner voice and help him in his quest of self-discovery.

Justin also learns to resolve conflict, which arrives in the form of an evil witch named Nosefeen, and captures Poofy as Poofy is guiding Justin to the Path of Possibilities. Through these adventures, Justin grows stronger and develops self-esteem, enabling him to return to Earth, find his parents, and guide them home safely.

ANZARD opens up a world of rewards for kids who learn to develop and trust their inner voice. The book helps them to become more aware and enlightened.

The ANZARD book cover is beautifully illustrated by Peter Green Design of Glendale, California who also designs for film companies, sporting teams and many other businesses including DreamWorks, McDonald’s, The Walt Disney Company, LEGOLAND, The NBA, HBO, FOX Kids Networks, and the “Game of Thrones” fantasy drama television series, to name a few.

“A timeless, yet very modern story of a young boy’s journey to a magical new world, filled with enchanting characters and thrilling adventure. You owe yourself a trip to Spiritania.”

            –           Victoria Lucas, Producer

“My nephew loved ANZARD so much I had to see what got him so excited. After the first chapter I was hooked. I normally don’t read this kind of fiction (fantasy) but the storyline was compelling enough to make me locate the author’s website and post this review.

Can’t wait to read Mr. Conroy’s next novel!”

            –           D. Butler, Amazon Post

Justin’s story can even appeal to adults. Says Mr. Conroy, “I want my readers to come away happier, more aware and enlightened…as a child I was aware of many things but I constantly invalidated that awareness. I shouldn’t have. Those gifts are precious. Our inner awareness should be nurtured and cultivated, especially by parents and the child who has those gifts. Maybe some part of Anzard will awaken those powers.”

Book Excerpt:

On a dark, stormy night a ten year-old boy named Justin Cavelle looked out of his upstairs bedroom window and prayed for the safe return of his missing parents.

Justin had just heard from his grandfather that his mother, a nurse, and his father, a doctor, were hours and hours overdue from a mission to help poor people in a fishing village hundreds of miles away.

At that moment, off in the distance, a treacherous, turbulent thunderstorm was tossing a small, red, single-engine Cessna plane around violently over the dense forest and cliffs below.

Inside that battered plane, the pilot, Justin’s father, Dr. Stephan Cavell, strained to see out of the rain-lashed windshield as he desperately tried to guide the plane through the mountainous terrain and narrow canyons below.

Beside Dr. Cavelle, his terrified wife, Noel, clutched her husband’s arm in fear as they bounced through the endless turbulence of the storm.

As lightning struck a nearby tree, Dr. Cavell noticed that the plane’s altimeter indicated they were going lower and lower.

As his wife screamed, Dr. Cavell desperately attempted to pull out of the plane’s nosedive. Without warning, their plane smashed into the tops of rising pine trees, sending them toward the steep cliffs of the narrow canyon. With a loud crash, the plane spun round and round until it finally was thrust into a nearby cave.

Inside the cave, the bruised and bloodied Dr. Cavelle and his wife lay unconscious in their damaged plane, which was wedged against the walls of the cave. A large boulder blocked one of the airplane’s doors, and the cave wall blocked the other. It was clear Justin’s parents were trapped and badly injured.

Farther down in the cave, a hibernating bear lay sound asleep, unaware and easy meal was nearby.

Miles away from that cave, a worried Justin rushed downstairs to be with his grandparents Ned and Bess.

Grandpa Ned was a husky man with silver-gray hair, dark green eyes and leathered skin. He had worked all his life running a lumber company, and that world seemed still etched in his face. Somehow, being the man in charge, working outdoors, and never backing down from anyone had given him the look of someone who lived all his life exactly how he wanted and loved every minute of it.

Grandpa wore a bright blue-and-red plaid shirt, over-alls and work boots. He always wore plaid shirts. Justin used to always wonder if he was born in a plaid shirt.

As Justin and Grandpa Ned looked out over the stormy night, Grandpa assured Justin that his mom and dad were all right and would be flying over the treetops soon.

In the background, Justin’s grandmother was in her favorite chair reading a book with a concerned expression on her face.

Grandma Bess was a quiet, slender woman who glowed with inner strength and awareness about her, as if she had special knowledge all to herself … she always seemed to know more than she said.

She noticed Justin when he bounced downstairs and into the living room all in a tizzy, and as usual, she took a moment to admire her grandson. What a young, lanky pony she thought.

Justin was an energetic, affectionate young boy who seemed to have a never-ending curiosity about things — a lot like his cat. Justin’s thick brown hair was always flopping over his dark blue eyes, and his skinny legs always seemed to be chasing his endless imagination — making him trip over himself sometimes.

Justin’s grandfather continued to look out the window at the foreboding storm and the dark clouds in the distance.

“Don’t worry son, they’ll make it. Your father has flown through many storms before, you know,” he said.

“You sure, Grandpa?” Justin asked.

Justin’s grandfather just smiled and patted his grandson on the head. “I’m sure boy,” he answered, “I’m sure.”

Little did Justin, or his grandfather, know how that storm would affect them both — and all the magical places it would eventually cause Justin to travel to in this Universe.

My Review

I’ve read other books by this author and was curious how she’d do with a children’s fantasy. She did just fine.

In the beginning there were two twelve year old boys playing in an attic on a dark and stormy night.

Then the lightning struck.

Finn was gone.

And there was only one.

Joshua must find Finn and bring him safely home. He must follow the Lightning Road. So he borrows an artifact from his grandfather’s collection and begins a dangerous, wonderous adventure.

Joshua awakens in a pit, surrounded by other children. It’s soon explained to him he’s in the Lost Realm of Nostos, that they are all slaves to be sold for labor. They can never go home again and anyone trying to run will be dealt with swiftly.

But Joshua is determined to find Finn and do just that, go home. Yet, as he flees the pit and meets other kids on the run, his plan becomes bigger. Now he has to save all the kids. And the path he has to take leads away from home, towards the danger.

This story is filled with amazing and terrifying creatures and a cast of characters that bring this world to life.

The addition of Greek mythology makes it even more fascinating and mysterious.

And the secrets surrounding  some crucial characters adds to the suspense.

I drew on movies like The Lord of the Rings and Percy Jackson to visual this world and the inhabitants created by the author. It led to a darker, richer experience.

Fans of fantasy adventures will eat this up.

Synopsis

Stay away from the window, don’t go outside when it’s storming and whatever you do, do not touch the orb.

Twelve-year-old Joshua Cooper’s grandpa has always warned him about the dangers of lightning. But Joshua never put much stock in his grandpa’s rumblings as anything more than the ravings of an old man with a vast imagination. Then one night, when Joshua and his best friend are home alone during a frightful storm, Joshua learns his grandpa was right. A bolt of lightning strikes his house and whisks away his best friend—possibly forever.

To get him back, Joshua must travel the Lightning Road to a dark place that steals children for energy. But getting back home and saving his friend won’t be easy, as Joshua must face the terrifying Child Collector and fend off ferocious and unnatural beasts intent on destroying him.

In this world, Joshua possesses powers he never knew he had, and soon, Joshua’s mission becomes more than a search for his friend. He means to send all the stolen children home—and doing so becomes the battle of his life.

The Bleikovat Event

The Cairns of Sainctuarie

by Hawk MacKinney

Bleik BookCover_TheBleikovatEvent

BLURB

Among the close-kin clans of western rural Malfesian Murians, farming and gelf ranches are long held traditions. Times are good…full barns, fat gelf calves and large families thrive among the sprawling grain fields and hamlets and the river from which they derive their name—the Feldon. Word comes with the trade caravans that times are not so good in the regions far to the east of the Feldon River: tumultuous changes stir among the remote province of Bleikovia. Old timer Feldovats shrug it off as one more squabble between clans over boundaries or water rights…too distant to affect the Feldovats

The western clans learn too late, however, it is no local squabble. Outnumbered and unprepared, Feldovats resist a hoard bent on plunder and conquest. Days of battle along the Feldon River stain the riverbanks in green Murian blood. In the finals days of exhausted fighting, Judikar Klarvko Celo, leader of the Clan Klarvkon and the Feldovats, is fatally stabbed with the slow-acting sevon poison. The Judikar’s consort, Etikaa Klarvkaa, becomes Regentkaa, and with Celovat Field Commander Korvo Celo serving as her advisor, she leads the demoralized Feldovat survivors on a gruesome ill-prepared winter trek through high mountain passes of ice and blizzard snow in an attempt to elude the Green Dragon forces of the Bleikovats.

Etkaa’s only son, Klarvko Celo II, helps spirit Feldovat young across a remote mountain exodus to the west toward Eedov Province. The battered, starving Feldovats reach the Malfesian coast at Eedov City only to be confronted with their implacable enemy determined to destroy the remaining Klarvkon rabble. Taking passage on crowded lumbering Maalonovion freighters, Feldovats and Malfesian refugees set sail. On arrival in Maalon City they are welcomed among their Maalon hosts, and settle into a new life.

But famine and a pandemic pestilence stir old hates and nurse former ambitions. The enraged Overseers of Bleikovia move against the Klarvkons, this time bringing bloodshed to Maalonovia. The exiles from the Feldon must fight once again, but starvation and plague across the Planete Myr make it a different war from the battles along the Feldon…a na’ä blikovat…the Bleikovvat Phenomenon…an event with unexpected consequences and outcomes none could have foreseen.

Before the vendetta killing is exhausted, the Regentkaa Klarvkaa and her son are swept onto the Maalon throne, setting the Klarvkon Dynasty and the Murians toward an intergalactic golden age, and a star-flung destiny the once-agrarian Feldovats could never have envisaged.

Check out this excerpt!

The catafalque of the old Dowager Queen rested on the high rostrum of the Temple of the Goddess Myraa. There was little ceremony to the cremation of dead. Yet, all that had passed made this requiem for the Dowager Queen Klarvkaa Etkaa Bremanova Celovaa Bremanova a symbol of the changes which had swept so many lives. Long annuals before the ascendancy of The Klarvkon Dynasty, the massive wood and granite Temple to the Goddess Myraa had been destroyed in the firestorm which laid waste Eedov City. After the close of the Malfesian War the temple was rebuilt, but not the city. On the ashes of the old temple, immense columns rose above the sanctuary and vaults. Iridescent alabaster and polished marble greeted pilgrim supplicants who had come to the shoreline plains washed by the Green Sea.

Dowager Etkaa Klarvkaa—wife, myäat, founding matriarch of the Klarvkon Dynasty—gave hope from a time without hope. As was her wish, she would be cremated on the soil of her birth, her ashes to mingle with those of her consort, Klarvko Celo. Their son, His Imperial Majesty Klarvko Celo the Second, decreed it would be done. At the enormous base of the great temple in a spectacular vision never seen before and seldom since came an undulating ocean of banners. Some of them clans which no longer existed, even the once-hated Green Dragon of Bleikovia. Murians had taken her to their hearts and never relinquished her. Even in death, her shadow would reach across the centuries, and measure all who followed.

Moccasin Trace, a historical novel nominated for the prestigious Michael Shaara Award for Excellence in Civil War Fiction and the Writers Notes Book Award, details the family bloodlines of his serial protagonist in the Craige Ingram Mystery Series. Vault of Secrets, the first book in the Ingram series, was followed by Nymrod Resurrection, Blood and Gold, and The Lady of Corpsewood Manor. All have received national attention. Walking the Pet is Hawk’s latest release in the Ingram series. The first book in another mystery-thriller series is scheduled for release in 2015. The Bleikovat Event, the first volume in The Cairns of Sainctuarie science fiction series, was released in 2012. Its sequel, The Missing Planets, has just been released.

Interview with Author Tom Lewis

Tell us about your debut novel:

The book’s called “Aftermath”. It’s a fast-paced, dystopian sci fi actioner that follows a teenage girl’s struggles for survival in the increasingly hostile wake of civilization’s collapse, and humanity’s domination by an alien race of beings. I’m calling it a “Hunger Games” with aliens.

“Aftermath” is the first novel in the “After the Fall” dystopian series, which will follow my heroine, Paige, and the remnants of humanity in their efforts to both survive, and reclaim our world.

How did you get into writing?

I started writing screenplays in 1999, and had my first screenplay optioned that year. I followed that up with several other screenplays, a few of which were optioned by production companies and ended up getting me hired for writing assignments. Two of those scripts were made into movies which I produced and directed. The first of those movies was picked up by Lionsgate for distribution, and we’re in negotiations with distributors on the second film, a spooky ghost story called “The Chanel”. It’s about a teenage girl, who after surviving a near-death experience in a car crash, finds herself haunted by a shadowy figure she sees from the corner of her eye – something that followed her back from the other side of death.

You’re also an attorney?

Yes. I practice entertainment law from my office in Santa Monica. My clients are mainly producers, so that’s helped with getting my screenplays out there. Before that, I served in the Marines.

Where did your interest in post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction come from?

My first exposure to the dystopian genre came about 4 years ago, when I was negotiating movie rights to a best-selling novel for one of my clients. I read that novel, and then read the “Hunger Games” trilogy, and then I was hooked. Dystopian, YA, NA, sci fi action, survival, and post-apocalyptic stories are far and away my favorites.

Where did the inspiration for Aftermath come from?

I came up with the idea for Aftermath about a year ago. I was searching Amazon for something post-apocalyptic and dystopian, but with ordinary people thrown into that upside-down world. Most of the books I was finding had either elite commandos, or the threat wasn’t big enough, or there just wasn’t enough action, thrills, or scares. So basically I wrote Aftermath as the story I wanted to read. I originally started drafting it as a screenplay, but then I saw the potential of it as a series of novels. The story is epic in scope – it follows the survivors through the end of civilization, and its conquest by this alien race. And by doing it through novels, I wasn’t limited to budget considerations you have when writing screenplays. But I did have the fun of shooting the trailer I made for the book. You can see that trailer here: https://vimeo.com/124008432

What’s next for you?

I’m about halfway finished with the second installment in the series, and hope to publish it later this summer. The working title is “The Whisperers.”

About Tom Lewis

Tom Lewis grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, where his family still resides. He served in the Marines, before returning to Arizona, where he attended Arizona State University, receiving his BS in Business Management. After ASU, he moved to San Diego, where he attended law school at the University of San Diego. He graduated in 1996, and was admitted to the State Bar of California the same year. Shortly after that, he moved to Santa Monica, where he practices law as an entertainment attorney.

His novel, “Aftermath,” is loosely based on one of his screenplays. In writing “Aftermath,” his goal was to take his readers through a post-apocalyptic America, where civilization had been crushed in an alien attack. The reader is taken on this journey through the eyes of his protagonist, 16-year-old Paige O’Connor, and encounters this hostile new world as she does.

“Aftermath” is the first book in the “After the Fall Dystopian Series,” which will continue to chronicle the adventures of Paige and the remnants of humanity in their struggle to survive, and ultimately reclaim our planet from the invaders.

When he’s not writing, or handling the legal work for his clients’ films, Tom enjoys working out, hanging out at the beach, bike riding, reading, and movies.

Some chit chat.

It’s kind of a dog day afternoon. Mostly cloudy and breezy and lots of looming rain clouds. Even my dog, Quigley, and my cat, Sheba, know when it’s a day to chill. To do what they love best. Sheba is so funny. Quig will be all stretched out and there will be just a tiny space on the sofa. She’ll eye it and meow. Then she’ll jump up and turn round and round looking for room to lie down. Quig will lift his head, softly rumble, and she’ll settle down. They are such a pair.

I’ve been reading a bunch of books and felt like I needed a break. So I’ve spent a lot of time going through Netflix, watching some obscure and low rated movies. I was surprised to find a few that were pretty good. And a bunch that were god awful bad. LOL  And guess what? Now I”m kind of burnt out on watching television. So what am I doing now? Well, I’ve been working crosswords, playing some video games, and I actually started playing solitaire with an actual deck of cards. Plus I’ve pulled out a few crafting projects that needed to be finished.

I think it’s time to get out of the house and do something fun. So what do you do when you can’t focus on one thing?

I’ll be hopping over to check out your Sunday posts so be sure to leave me your link!

UnleashThe Undead cover

My Review

Lots of zombies in this one.

So many different contributions, from short stories, to flash fiction, to poetry.

And there are some great illustrations sprinkled throughout these stories. It made the reading even more fun.

I had some I enjoyed more than others but all in all a very solid collection.

I’m huge on the apocalyptic genre and zombies so I read this cover to cover without pausing.

I cringed. I laughed.

It may sound morbid, but the ones I liked the most had the worst endings. I know, I’m a sucker for the shockers and who expects a happy ending when the shuffling horde is out to eat ya. LOL I’d be disappointed if some of the main characters didn’t meet a grisly end, and these authors didn’t disappoint me.

Now that I’ve sampled these authors I’ll be checking to see what else they have to offer.

4 Stars

Enjoy the excerpt

Along with the thigh-high PVC boots, Lucy was also wearing a long-sleeved leather body suit and a pair of PVC goggles. Anna smirked; she looked like the lovechild of the steampunk genre and a member of Marilyn Manson.

“Well what was I meant to do? He came at me, all chompy and toothy so I stamped in his eye.” Lucy shrugged, moving to examine a shelf crowded with accessories.

“No, not Colin. I wouldn’t have blamed you for stamping in that pervert’s eye even if he wasn’t one of them.” Anna replied, rolling her eyes as Lucy found, and snapped on, a pair of leather gloves.

“He was my best customer.” Lucy grumbled. zombies photo: zombie gif 08.gif

“I mean the outfit.” Anna explained, shaking her head. “I realise you run a sex shop whilst moonlighting as a dominatrix, but do you really have to dress like that now? We’re in the middle of an apocalypse; you don’t need your uniform.”

“It’s an underwear shop! And this outfit is for practicality. It’s nearly impossible to chew through this stuff. I’ll have the last laugh when your jeans are in tatters and your legs have been eaten off, and there’s barely a scratch on me.” Lucy smiled, grabbing a bullwhip from the wall and coiling it around her forearm.
