Genre: Chick Lit / Women’s Fiction

Synopsis

**eFestival of Words 2012 Women’s Fiction Winner From USA TODAY Bestselling Author Tonya Kappes**

Orphaned at a young age, Hallie Mediate was raised by her (slightly) crazy Great Aunt Grace on the wrong side of the tracks in Cincinnati. Hallie dreamed of escaping her hometown and never looking back. After putting herself through college, landing her dream job in Chicago, and starting a romance with her handsome running partner Bo Pompillio, life is finally exactly as she wants it.

That is, until she’s transferred back to the hometown. Not wanting her past to cross paths with her future, Hallie puts her relationship with Bo on hold.

When she arrives in town, Hallie finds crazy Aunt Grace rummaging through a dumpster looking for the “perfect” welcome home gift for her niece. That’s just the beginning. After that, Aunt Grace stays busy by dying her stolen poodle’s hair pink and leaving the dog on her apartment roof to pee, throwing bricks out the window at passing neighbors, and climbing every flag pole to kiss the ornamental eagle.

Hallie finds some sanity at a local jewelry-making class where she uncovers a hidden talent for beading. When her talent is discovered by a major department store jewelry buyer, Hallie realizes that what she had in Chicago might not have been her dream life after all.

When faced with the choice of moving back to Chicago and Bo or taking a leap of faith to start her own jewelry company (with Aunt Grace in tow), Hallie has to make a decision. Will she let her past and her future collide, or will she or keep searching for the happiness she may already have found?

When the Larson family shows up on her doorstep, road-weary and desperate for a break, Jessie offers them lodging, even though her grand opening is still a week away.

Kin

  by Kealan Patrick Burke

35674478

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Horror

Synopsis

On a scorching hot summer day in Elkwood, Alabama, Claire Lambert staggers naked, wounded, and half-blind away from the scene of an atrocity. She is the sole survivor of a nightmare that claimed her friends, and even as she prays for rescue, the killers — a family of cannibalistic lunatics — are closing in.

A soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder returns from Iraq to the news that his brother is among the murdered in Elkwood.

In snowbound Detroit, a waitress trapped in an abusive relationship gets an unexpected visit that will lead to bloodshed and send her back on the road to a past she has spent years trying to outrun.

And Claire, the only survivor of the Elkwood Massacre, haunted by her dead friends, dreams of vengeance… a dream which will be realized as grief and rage turn good people into cold-blooded murderers and force alliances among strangers.

It’s time to return to Elkwood.

In the spirit of such iconic horror classics as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Deliverance, Kin begins at the end and studies the possible aftermath for the survivors of such traumas upon their return to the real world — the guilt, the grief, the thirst for revenge — and sets them on an unthinkable journey… back into the heart of darkness.

I’ve read several of Kealan’s books and for some reason, I overlooked this one. It’s been on my shelf since October 2012. I think it’s time to give it a go. Have you read it?

The above cover is a new version. Here’s the one I added back in 2012 released by Cemetery Dance Publications.

Genre: Cozy Mystery

My teaser from page 65 in the paperback.

“Your grandmother wants you to figure out who killed Parisi.”

“No, yes, and everyone.”

Synopsis

Hit whodunit writer Victoria Rienzi is getting back to her roots by working at her family’s Italian restaurant. But now in between plating pasta and pouring vino, she’ll have to find the secret ingredient in a murder….

When Victoria takes a break from penning her popular mystery series and moves back to the Jersey shore, she imagines sun, sand, and scents of fresh basil and simmering marinara sauce at the family restaurant, the Casa Lido. But her nonna’s recipes aren’t the only things getting stirred up in this Italian kitchen.

Their small town is up in arms over plans to film a new reality TV show, and when Victoria serves the show’s pushy producer his last meal, the Casa Lido staff finds itself embroiled in a murder investigation. Murder With Ganache

A Key West Food Critic Mystery

by Lucy Burdette

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Cozy Mystery

My teaser from page 38 in the paperback.

The sun was dropping low on the horizon, and the waves had picked up just enough to set the boat gently rocking. I’d have given Evinrude, my first born, to stay home and sip a glass of wine on the deck of our houseboat. Alone.

The cat trotted past me tail hoisted high, looking outraged, as though he understood exactly what I was thinking.

“Not really,” I told him. “Just kidding. I wouldn’t trade you for anything.”

Synopsis

Hayley Snow, the food critic for Key Zest magazine, has her plate heaped high with restaurant reviews, doughnut and sticky bun tastings, and an article on the Hemingway cats. But this week she’s also in charge of her best friend’s wedding. And then someone adds a side of murder…

For better or worse, Hayley has agreed to bake over 200 cupcakes for her friend Connie’s wedding while still meeting her writing deadlines. The last thing she needs is family drama. But her parents come barreling down on the island like a category 3 hurricane and on their first night in town her stepbrother, Roby, disappears into the spring break party scene in Key West.

When Hayley hears that two teenagers have stolen a jet ski, she sets aside her oven mitts and goes in search of Rory. She finds him, barely conscious, but his female companion isn’t so lucky. Now Hayley has to let the cupcakes cool and assemble the sprinkles of clues to clear her stepbrother’s name—before someone else gets iced.

Hearse And Gardens

A Hamptons Home & Garden Mystery

by Kathleen Bridge

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Cozy Mystery

My teaser from page 73 in the paperback.

The folly decor was kept simple. I used mostly found items. I’d brought in an aqua carriage house door, worn and faded by years of salt air and sun, that doubled as a tabletop. I’d placed it over two large electrical spools I’d liberated from the side of the road.

I love to scavenge things left discarded and make something original and cozy out of them.

Read on if you want to know more.

Synopsis

A Hamptons interior designer deals with skeletons in the closet in the new mystery from the national bestelling author of Better Homes and Corpses.

To keep her mind off the legal battle over the oceanfront cottage she’s trying to buy, Meg agrees to help her friend inventory and clear out furniture from the massive Montauk estate of wealthy art broker Harrison Falks. But the job takes a terrifying turn when Meg discovers a skeleton in a hidden room in one of the estate’s many bungalows. The remains turn out to be those of Harrison’s son, who went missing nearly twenty years ago—along with one of his father’s Warhol paintings.

As Meg delves into the Hamptons’ pop art past, she gets drawn into the sketchy goings-on and family drama at the estate. But when Meg makes no bones about solving the crime, she just might become the subject of the killer’s next installation.

 My teaser from page

I pushed open the bathroom door and smacked into something solid. A nose. A perfectly handsome nose.

“Owww!” Cole yelped.

“Oh my God. Are you alright?”

“No, I’m not alright. Geez!”

I went to touch his nose but he pushed my hand away. What else could go wrong? As that thought fluttered across my brain, a screech rang out from the top of the stairs.

This is my own version of a weekly book haul and all things new on fuonlyknew.

I’m also linking up with The Sunday Post hosted by Kimberly @Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Sunday Post

Some chit chat.

We’ve had some unusual weather this winter. Don’t normally see cold snaps until later in January and February and they don’t last long. So far we’ve had several brief forays into the 30s and even got a little bit of snow, though it didn’t last long. And I’ve been lucky as my plants and shrubs, which flourished this summer, have weathered the cold well, so far.

This beauty is the biggest I’ve ever seen it and I had to trim it back. Haven’t been doing much with my green things and looks like some creepers are trying to get warm under it. And Quigley snuck in for a bootie shot. LOL To give you an idea of its size, Quigley is 100+ pounds.

20171230_110714

And with winter comes oranges. My miniature orange tree is so full of fruit the branches are dipping towards the ground. You can glimpse some of my banana trees behind it. They usually turn brown and I trim them later so they’ll come back bigger and stronger in the spring. Hopefully I’ll get more bananas to show you and there won’t be a hurricane to kill them next year.

Sorry about the finger in the photo. Didn’t notice it until I downloaded the pictures and too lazy to go take more. LOL

20171230_110731

Here’s a picture displaying their size.

20171230_110826

They’re bite sized and so deliciously sweet. I eat them peel and all. LOL

It’s hard to believe it will be dipping into the 20s tonight. And I have a feeling some of my plants will go bye bye until the spring. Not the oranges though. Unless they get really frozen over many days, they stay happy.

That’s it for this week. I hope you had a Merry Christmas and wishing you a Happy New Year!
