by Christine Amsden

KaitlinsTale_med

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Kaitlin Mayer is on the run from the father of her baby – a vampire who wants her to join him in deadly eternity. Terrified for her young son, she seeks sanctuary with the Hunters Guild. Yet they have their own plans for her son, and her hopes of safety are soon shattered.

When she runs into Matthew Blair, an old nemesis with an agenda of his own, she dares to hope for a new escape. But Matthew is a telepath, and Kaitlin’s past is full of dark secrets she never intended to reveal.

*Companion to the Cassie Scot Series

~~~~~
Excerpt
Matthew couldn’t help it. He reached out one long hand, just brushing a silken strand of hair that she had missed when she’d done her earlier hair flip. Her breath caught, and so did his. Her heart was pounding, echoing within his own chest.
Kaitlin licked her lips, her thoughts racing, but not entirely in words. He won’t kiss me, she thought, it’s too soon. And I don’t want him to, do I? Talk about being attracted to a bad boy!
Cassie always said I had terrible taste in men, and doesn’t this just prove it? And it’s not just me I have to worry about now, it’s Jay. But oh, her body loved the idea. It’s been so long, and I almost thought that part of me was dead. It isn’t. It so, so isn’t. She practically tingled. Like a teenager with my first crush.
Or was that an echo? Matthew suddenly realized he was having trouble keeping her thoughts separate from his own. He’d felt this way before, but never so soon.
His hand moved from her hair to her upper arm, and he scooted towards her several inches.
Her eyes were on his lips; her mind half-hoping, half-disbelieving.
Any minute now, I’m going to wake up, she thought.
Not if he could help it.
Ember has a little problem…fairies want her dead.
Ember spends her Friday nights lurking in the bad parts of town, killing fairies. It’s either that, or become a victim to their flesh-eating hunger.
Then she meets Remy, a fae who, despite getting on her nerves, isn’t evil. He tells her that a shadow has been consuming his world, changing its inhabitants and letting destructive beasts into his city. He is searching for his brother who went missing during the catastrophe.
When a team of mercenaries come for Ember, she has little choice but to join Remy in his quest. Together, they decide to bait a trap. What they find reveals the destruction of the fae world means the end of the human world, too–and it’s Ember’s fault.
Available on Amazon for $0.99
Excerpt of The Deepest Black
The visual being fed into my brain fades out, and Gwendolyn removes her sticky palm from my head.
“What happens if you touch the barrier?” I ask, envisioning being hurtled back with a bolt of electricity.
“Nothing.” She locks her gaze on mine. “That’s the entire problem.”
I resist looking away. “So, if we do get in, what happens from there?”
“I need two of his teeth to make more of the elixir.” She turns and begins gathering the mugs from the table. “There’s a man at the end of the block with a rickshaw who will take you for a satchel of tea. I can give you the tea, but I can’t promise anything with the Penumbra beastie.”
All things considered, this quest seems harmless enough. We go to the swamp, we can’t do anything when we get there, and we turn around, go home, and make cookies. Or something. Because at that point, there is no elixir, and we’re back to using sage oil to kill the big bad fairies.
But at least we will have tried.
“All right,” I say, standing up. “Let’s go.”
Remy looks up at me, eyebrows arched.
“What? This bog beastie doesn’t scare me,” I say, without adding it’s only because there’s a barrier around the place and I won’t be able to get to the creature. Best effort, class.
I don’t know if Remy is also running on empty actions, or he’s really ready to take on the Lunar Swamps. We say farewell to Gwendolyn and set off to make a deal with the man with the rickshaw. He’s eager, just as Gwendolyn said he would be, and before long, we’re loaded up in a green and yellow rickshaw. The man sings in a low voice as he takes us through the city and out into the open.
Of course, when we reach the swamp, the barrier is gone.
The sequel begins back in the Black Rock Desert before zombies invade a cruise ship and a tailgate party. In The Z Tailgate, the Burning Man site is now an internment camp for zombies and our heroes, Alan Gorman, Conner and Bruce, consult with the Department of Homeland Security, who oversee zombie affairs. Alan and Conner are sent to a cruise ship to investigate a possible new zombie outbreak. Bruce and Cassie – Conner’s girlfriend – are kidnapped along with a truckload of zombies by Chinese-backed henchmen intending to stow away some Zs to China. The zombie truck becomes the subject of a manhunt, ultimately hiding out in the Oakland Coliseum parking lot, where a football game is about to take place. The zombies escape and invade the tailgate parties, leading to a climatic battle in the Coliseum parking lot.
Excerpt
.
A palpable buzz could be sensed throughout the Hegenberger lot, as the stage one infected turned and began to rise up and join the other zombies in great numbers. Cassie, Conner and even Tess took measure of it from the back of their cargo truck as they fought off their attackers.
The buzz of the second wave began to unnerve, and then panic the thousands of tailgaters, who up to this point had patiently and obediently waited in their vehicles for an all-clear signal. Many started to flee their car on foot, causing others to see them and decide to do the same. Even more began to try to extricate their vehicles from their confined positions in the parking lot, ramming their cars and trucks into each other, hoping to clear enough space to break free.
Those in the far western end of the Hegenberger lot, in the “C” section – who remained outside their vehicles up to that point – caught the buzz of crowd noise and the initial thrusts of zombies into their areas. More than one barbeque of hot coals spilled over, rolling underneath running cars. A series of fires and explosions erupted in that end of the lot.
A growing number of people were fleeing on foot – which hadn’t been a major issue until this point – as the second wave of Zs pursued them. A number of persons were trampled in the process. Some of those on foot began to climb up the middle observation tower in the B lot to escape the Zs on their tail. Even more tailgaters sought out the tower as a refuge when they saw others before them taking that route. The structure soon became seriously beyond capacity. It didn’t take long for the tower to tip over, sending bodies flying everywhere, scattered amongst the zombies gathered below. A plume of dust rose from the tower’s collapse. Several cars were partially crushed underneath the fallen structure. Z’s began picking through the numbers that had tumbled off the tower as it went down.
~~~~~

Excerpt

She peeked around the paper rack at the cowboy standing in the front of her store. He was tall, easily six foot. His shoulders were broad, his arms well muscled. A pair of work gloves tucked in his back pockets drew her eyes to his butt. Red dust covered his black cowboy hat, and his boots were scuffed. Yes, yes, yes, she thought, he was a real cowboy.

She scooped up the box of supplies and smiled around the pencil in her teeth. Something dark and fuzzy came into her field of vision, from below, right across the top of the box. Her focus shifted from the cowboy to the thing crawling across the box clutched to her breast.

Spider!!

She screamed. She pitched the box and the contents flew through the air. The spider moved fast across the old linoleum tiles, straight towards her.

She climbed on top of the folding table and squatted there. Its two front legs felt in front of it, as if it were trying to find her.

She was so focused on the spider, she didn’t see the others. Wasn’t even aware that she was not alone in the shop, until she heard Midge’s voice.

“Good grief, stop screaming, would you?”

And she saw him. The cowboy. It took a moment to remember his name. Aidan. That was it. Aidan.

Calm as could be, he walked over, picked up a piece of paper and scooped the spider up. It jerked a bit, then froze. Aidan strode to the front door. Gina stood up on the table and watched as he opened the door, squatted down and tipped the paper. Stunned, she stood and watched. She’d never seen anyone do that before.

My 56 from the paperback.

First of all, I had gotten totally screwed on the “origin story” front. All superheroes have origin stories, like how Bruce Wayne’s parents get killed and he goes to Tibet or whatever, and Superman is an alien, and Spider-Man had that radioactive spider? Me? I kissed a janitor in the school bathroom.

My Review

I’m a fan of short stories and anthologies so I was excited to read this collection.

I’ll give you a few samples.

The first story, The Era of Super Weapons, was fun and packed with action. The super weapons were humans with extra powers, some an interesting combination of animal and human.

One such weapon, while on a mission, bumps into other super weapons, and that saying “The enemy of my enemy is my friend,”  couldn’t be more true when they come up against a deadly foe.

This was fun. My imagination took over, and I visualized how these super weapons would look. Action is fast and furious, and the ending invites you to want more. I’d continue with these characters if another story became available.

Next up was Heroes. A young man, comic book heroes, and an old man. What if the comic book legends were real?  The writing was strong, and while the ending left me hanging, it did make me think, what if.

All Things Change was a strange little story about a girl living in a bubble. She’s locked in her house, surrounded by plastic, and it’s been days since her parents visited her. With no clue what’s happening outside, she invites a stranger in.

I would have loved to get more of this one. I knew something dramatic was occurring but was kept as isolated as the girl in her bubble. The ending left me scratching my head.

There’s a blend of several genres. Lots of different scenarios. And some fun characters too.

While I can’t say I loved all of these stories, I did enjoy their individuality and finished the collection wondering about several of them, and I’d read other stories by these authors.

You may not like all of these, but I’m sure there are some gems you’ll enjoy. From little nibbles to bigger bites, and four categories, there’s something for everyone.

4 Stars

Horror Excerpt

Terrors Great and Small by John Langmaack

From out in the hall, something big dropped from the ceiling, slamming its bulk into the door and knocking Simon against the desk. He quickly bounced back, throwing all his weight against the door, pushing it back. A terrible droning sound filled them all with a primal fear. It rose in pitch and volume as the door moved toward Simon. He pushed against it with all his strength, groaning as he gained and lost inches. Simon used the desk behind him as a brace, using his legs to add to the strength of his push. The door was closing. He was…winning.

He shouted in alarm as something grabbed the door from the outside. At first, he thought it was a stick, like a branch. It was segmented and moving, with bristling hairs, like thorns. He gave a greater push as the droning outside reached a terrifying whine. He was awestruck with horror when he risked a strained glimpse through the narrowing crack and saw a huge compound eye staring back at him.

Simon recoiled and the door opened a little wider. He could now clearly see the thing. It was neither a giant insect nor a man, but a ghastly amalgam of both. Torn and bloody flesh was a quivering, wet curtain beneath the bulging eyes. From behind the bleeding mess, a long and slender tube, like an exposed muscle, stretched toward Simon’s face. He almost wept when he saw, above those prismatic eyes, a tuft of shocking orange hair. The frantic beating of veiny, cellophane-like wings caused the droning. He could feel the wind of their beating and he could smell the stench of decay it blew off its own shredded flesh.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

CollectiveRamblings author

Just as it says, Collective Ramblings is a collection of various works, an anthology. In 2015, we completed our quarterly writing contests, each with its own theme. For each theme, the five best entries were selected from the contest to have their works published. All twenty stories have been compiled into this book for your reading pleasure. The four contest themes were:

  • Super Powers
  • Deserted Island
  • Horror
  • Labyrinth.

We know everyone will love these imagination-stretching stories, that are filled with suspense, bravery, and danger, as much as we did.
