I’ve read a bunch of Kathryn’s books and enjoyed them all. From man eating dinosaurs, to witches and other strange beings, it’s always a wild ride. I’ve got another good one to share today.
The Calling
by Kathryn Meyer Griffith
Genre: Mystery / Horror / Paranormal
My Review
Kathryn is quite skillful at pulling me out of my mundane world and dropping me into one of hers. This time it’s Egypt. The land of queens and pharaohs, pyramids and ancient mysteries.
Faye and her husband, Nick, are ideal partners. They share a strong work ethic and a love of music. Their happy existence is soon shattered and sends them across the world to Egypt where they must solve an ancient mystery and face unspeakable perils.
Faye’s visions become stronger. The pleas of the long dead Egyptian princess will no longer be ignored. Sounds intriguing doesn’t it? I’m a sucker for this type of scenario. A modern woman haunted by a ghost from long ago. Faye is a strong character. She’s well grounded despite the haunting visions, loves her husband, and is surrounded by friends that share her passion for music. Take out the visions and she sounds a lot like me in my younger days. Made her very likable and easy to relate to.
Nick adores Faye. Shares her passions. And when he gets a peek into one of her visions, he doesn’t hesitate to drop everything and follow her to Egypt. Nick is my kind of guy. Loyal, loving, and all alpha when it’s required. I loved him and Faye as a couple.
Ankhesenaton has been haunting Faye ever since Faye died and came back. She needs her help to find justice for the murder of her and her family. When I read the part about what happened to her, it brought sadness and anger. I wanted Ankhesenaton to get her justice. And maybe a good dose of vengeance too.
I enjoy traveling through reading and the author is masterful in her visual descriptions. You see the immense pyramids. Feel the heat of the desert and the abrasive sand blown against your exposed skin. I was awed and thirsty at the same time.
This story reads fast. Starts out ordinary as you meet the main characters. Moves into a ghostly mystery. And then drops you into the heat and dust of Egypt, where things you can’t imagine come to light. As with many of her books, Katherine doesn’t hesitate to put her characters in peril and she often lets them perish. This added to the suspense as I really wanted Faye and Nick to survive. I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best but prepared for the worst.
A haunting mystery, some time travel, and plenty of action and suspense with a dash or two of horror. If you enjoy any of that, you should read The Calling.

This is my own version of a weekly book haul and all things new on fuonlyknew.
I’m also linking up with The Sunday Post hosted by Kimberly @Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
Some chit chat.
This week seemed so long. Probably because it was my first full week back at work. LOL Every day I came home and collapsed on the couch. Couldn’t seem to find the energy for my blog either. I think this is the least amount of posts for a week that I’ve done in some time. I managed to read a few books. And I watched the last two episodes of Game Of Thrones. Bazinga! What a season finale. Now a whole year until the last season.
I did manage to squeeze in some pool time in between rain storms. Hurricane Harvey dumped some rain on us, but nothing like in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Those poor people. Now we have Irma churning in the open waters. Going to be huge but I don’t think it will come our way. Crossing my fingers!
This is last weeks photo for the bananas.
And here are some current ones.

Things are changing. Notice the yellow blossom?
And the bottom tips are darkening too.
I’m going to have to goggle about what the flower means.
I’ll be heading over to your posts soon. Happy Sunday!

I’ve not been reading many vampires stories but this one caught my eye. The cover is creepy and the blurb pushed me to give it a try.

Thea
A Vampire Story
by Steven Jenkins
My Review
This story was a nasty little piece of work. In a good way.
Thea is a young teen with an over protective alcoholic mother, Sarah. Things come to a head when her mother does something truly horrific while in a drunken stupor.
Told from two points of view, you really get inside these two gals heads. See what motivates them. Why they push each other to the limit.
What I found interesting was the vampire angle. People know they exist, though many believe they’re extinct. They’re taught about them in school, but since most have never encountered one, it’s more like an urban legend to them. It becomes real in a way you wouldn’t expect.
At first I felt sorry for Sarah. She lost her oldest daughter to suicide and keeps tight control over her younger daughter, Thea, fearing drugs and boys will lead her to the same end. I could almost understand her escape into the bottle. But Sarah isn’t really likeable. Every little thing has her guzzling booze until she’s practically comatose.
Thea is a young girl, ready to find herself, but her mother won’t let her do anything. She gets it. Her mother worries she’ll make the same mistakes. But Thea isn’t her sister and she’s tired of being kept under such tight control. I didn’t blame her for acting out, doing things she knew would anger her mother.
Eventually, it gets so bad you know something has to give. And when it does, all the feels come into play. A disturbing story becomes a horrific one.
Loved the ending. When I went into this I didn’t realize there was a second book. Never fear. There’s no cliff hanger. The author leaves it open for more though, and I’m curious to see where he goes.

Bones To Pick
A Brie Hooker Mystery #1
by Linda Lovely
Genre: Cozy Mystery
My 56 from the Paperback
Always tickled me when Eva applied her “pusillanimous polecat” label. Took me back to childhood visits with my aunts. I’d sit between them holding a big bowl of buttered popcorn as we watched DVDs of old-timey Westerns. Gabbey Hayes, who appeared as a sidekick in half the shoot-’em-ups, regularly worked “pusillanimous polecat” into his description of villains.
I do love my cozies and I’ve been wanting to read one of Linda Lovely’s books. This sounds so fun and that title and cover are adorable.

Read on if you want to know more.
Synopsis
Living on a farm with four hundred goats and a cantankerous carnivore isn’t among vegan chef Brie Hooker’s list of lifetime ambitions. But she can’t walk away from her Aunt Eva, who needs help operating her dairy. Once she calls her aunt’s goat farm home, grisly discoveries offer ample inducements for Brie to employ her entire vocabulary of cheese-and-meat curses. The troubles begin when the farm’s pot-bellied pig unearths the skull of Eva’s husband, who disappeared years back. The sheriff, kin to the deceased, sets out to pin the murder on Eva. He doesn’t reckon on Brie’s resolve to prove her aunt’s innocence. Death threats, ruinous pedicures, psychic shenanigans, and biker bar fisticuffs won’t stop Brie from unmasking the killer, even when romantic befuddlement throws her a curve.
